Friday morning Rangers stuff
I'm going to stop saying "big series" or "big game," because they are all big right now.
Jeff Wilson writes that the Rangers have set their rotation for the final stretch, with Kevin Millwood, Scott Feldman, and Tommy Hunter all getting five starts apiece, and Brandon McCarthy and Derek Holland getting four.
Evan Grant has a lengthy piece up looking at the performance of Ron Washington this season.
Randy Galloway has a column celebrating Nolan Ryan and Mike Maddux turning the Rangers around by fixing their pitching.

I agree with Evan's take on Washington
for the most part. He is a good leader of people and the teeth gnashing that goes on here about in-game decisions is rather overwrought. Washington regularly makes me scratch my head, or even shout at the tv, but it’s hard to argue that the team hasn’t responded to him and played hard.

Agreed
I sit there and wonder what the hell with some of his moves but at the end of the day the players seem to really like him and they play their asses off for him. Next thing you know we are sitting here on 9/11 right in the middle of a playoff race.

I don’t want another doubleheader despite thier success this year.

Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
I don't want another doubleheader
because I have to buy new tires tomorrow and would probably miss game 1.

Opening day through July:
.202/.256/.415 over 40% K rate
Since returning Aug. 25:
.276/.302/.448 27.8% K rate
Headed in the right direction, but only 1 2B and 3 HRs since returning, and his walk rate is down to under 5%. He seems to be making better contact, but still a ways to go. He is having better at bats, going by the eye test, but not quite there yet.

Perhaps he's adjusting
His ISOP is actually down all of 2009 compared to all previous years as a pro. It took a significant dive again in August, though, and has crept up a bit in SSS September. I don’t see a similar trend with Cruz’ numbers last year when I believe he made a similar change. It certainly bears watching.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Davis was horrific v Baltimore (back to his old ways)
and okay v Cleveland.
I don’t know how to assess what he did in Cleveland (he was rot gut awful in the first game) because everybody hit the tar out of the ball throughout the series. That was really shitty pitching the team went against in Clee. A decent SS also throws him out on that infield hit.
CDavis is still making too many outs (not taking enough walks) and the team has to bat him in the 8 hole which tells everybody why he is in the line-up (the GM drafted him). A truly productive 1B in the AL does not regularly bat 8th.
My major concern is how the team does with him in the line-up. A 10-6 since the latest changes were made is okay but we’ll have to see if they can go 14-9 down the stretch with a 1B who has a .260ish obp and has to bat 8th.

I think he'd mentioned
he’s more focused on making contact right now and just trusting that the power will come.
and I think
he’s probably right. As he gets used to the new stance/swing he’ll probably settle in. But I hate to see that walk rate plunge further and I hope his new swing doesn’t increase contact but sacrifice power. He’s still not much good to us if he’s hitting a punchless .275.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Davis? Give him at bats and he'll run into 30 HRs!
I don’t think his power drought is anything more than the normal comings and goings of hot streaks. I’m really, really excited that his zone contact rate since returning is a tick under 86%. That is really good news when remembering it was a tick under 70% in June.
Overall, his contact percentage is 73% after coming back compared to 61% in June. Looks like whatever he worked on while in the minors has stuck.
I really look forward to next year for Davis. Actually, why get ahead of myself. He could have an enormous power surge these final few weeks and throughout the post season.

I actually like him, but he still believes that the Rangers only have to win series to get into the playoffs. That time is over. It’s time to demolish the teams that are worse than you.
Have you seen Boston’s schedule? They have 3 against NYY and 3 against LAAA… that’s it. 4 against KC at home and 4 against CLE at home. I think their worst possible record is going to be 96-66.
GO RANGERS! Sweep SEA and OAK and take 2 of 3 from the Angels!
Whatever it takes to get to 94 wins
will get it done but I think it would be prudent to win 7 of the next 9 games.

94 wins gets it done...with some drama.
They gotta make hay at home right now, meaning a 7-2 needs to happen.
The Red Sox go to KC for 4 games September 21-24 (we’re in Oakland) and we need to be at least even with them when that series starts.

series wins doesn't get it done
If the Rangers win every series here on out, no sweeps, they end up with 95 wins. If LAA and Bos do the same they end up with 96 or 97 wins depending on who wins thier 3 games series.
The Rangers probably need a couple of series sweeps and no ties or loses to make the playoffs.

The Angels would have to go 2 games below 0.500 the rest of the way for 94 wins to be enough. I understand that they don’t have Davis on the team, so I’m not sure how they are going to play that poorly the rest of the way.

I'd set the mark right about there for this homestand..
For this team to make it, they definitely need a serious run of winning. I haven’t checked it out carefully, but the longest winning streak since May appears to be 5. That May run (5 in a row, 8 of 9, 10 of 11) is what we need, and a long homestand is the time to do it.

I BELIEVE!
We have one off day left (Thursday)
I imagine a doubleheader on Sunday (weather is supposed to be better) could be played.

If all 3 rained out!
They would probably schedule a DH on Oct 3 in Seattle. The another in Texas on Oct. 5 if necessary.

How good was the gutierrez for the rangers?
Keith Law (2:26 PM)
I’m still trying to find out what exactly Gutierrez did to make KC sour on him; before the season, they were gushing over him as the sleeper guy in their system. Then they trade him for a defensive catcher and a 5th outfielder. I’d like to at least hear the explanation.

it might also involve the same sort of response that got Posnanski and those guys banned. They’re closing ranks with the “loyal” and Gutierrez doesn’t qualify.

I don’t get this whole moral crusade and banishment of the unloyal. Give someone something worth being loyal to and it wouldn’t be a problem.
I really thought at the beginning of the season the Rangers and Royals were at about the same spot on the franchise building path. Rangers a bit ahead with their hitters; Royals a bit ahead with their pitchers. Now, it looks like the Rangers are way ahead in defense and hitters and the Royals just won’t get enough out of their pitching to make up for all of the other shortcomings. It doesn’t appear they have enough help coming from the farm to right the ship in the next year or two.

RG sucks, but always inspires me to did deeper in order to point out what he's overlooking.
So, the final comment about not spending and barely hanging on versus spending and being in charge got me thinking a bit. Of course, he’s forgetting that the Rangers added Neftali Feliz without spending any money.
This time of year, matchups and strength of schedule matter. That’s always the case in football, which is, at best, the analytical mentality that RG brings to his columns. But, he failed to look at the Rangers/Angels in that light today, and instead chose the convenient/weenie analysis and focused on the payroll differences. So far, the Rangers have had a slightly more difficult schedule as they have played BOS/NYY more often than the Angels. That will change this week.
This year the Rangers have played 44 games against the East and the Angels have played 36. The Angels are 8-4 against NYY/BOS and the Rangers are 11-7. We’re about to see if the Angels stack up as well against NYY/BOS as Texas has, since they will complete their AL East schedule with 4 v. NYY and 3 v. BOS. If the Angels go 4-3, the season largely comes down to who plays better against the West.
That will bring the SOS for the two teams fairly close, although you might argue the Rangers had a slightly more difficult schedule with 47 against the East and 40 against the Central while the Angels will end with 43 against the East and 44 against the Central.
Breaking it down in excruciating detail.
Angles have 1 more game against NYY than the Rangers.
Angels have 4 more games against the Royals than the Rangers.
Angels have 3 more games against the White Sox than the Rangers.
Rangers have 3 more games against the Rays than the Angels.
Rangers have 2 more games against Toronto than the Angels.
Rangers have 4 more games against Cleveland than the Angels.
In interleague play, Rangers had 6 against Houston; Angels had 0; Rangers had 3 against LAD; Angels had 6; Angels had 3 against Colorado; Rangers had 0.
So, you be the judge of whether the disparity in AL East v. AL Central made much of a difference in SOS. I don’t think it did. Interleague probably reduced the Rangers SOS a bit relative to Angels.
Again, if the Angels go 4-3 against NYY/BOS, the season largely comes down to who plays better against the West. So far the Rangers are 24-13 and Angels 21-23 against the West. I would feel better if the Angels had more games left against Seattle, who they’ve played .500 against, rather than Oakland, who they have an 8-5 record against. Oakland appears to be especially bad at hitting when facing the Angels as they’ve scored only 46 runs in those 13 games. Still, if LAA does no better than 4-3 against BOS/NYY, I feel like the Rangers are in the driver’s seat by virtue of their dominance against the West.
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power? Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck now. -- Tenacious D
It is going to take a pretty nice choke job
for the Angels to come back to us. They’re really good and have been playing like absolute monsters for three months running.
The best option for the Rangers is going to be the Wild Card and right now I’m thinking that we’ll be rooting for the Angels to sweep the Sox next week.
The good news is that one of those teams has to lose every night so if we take care of our own bidness, good things are going to happen.

I don't know that it would be a choke job. Just a couple of games with a favorable break for the Rangers.
If the Angels go 5-5 against CHW/BOS/NYY, and the Rangers go 2-1 against the Rays, and both Rangers and Angels win the remaining AL West games at their seasonal AL West win rate (.477 for the Angels, .649 for the Rangers), their records would be:
95-67 Angels
94-68 Rangers
That’s within the margin of error from lucky bounces and bloopers.
