Saturday morning Rangers things

Three straight nights with no Ranger baseball.  Boo.

Derek Holland is unhappy with the amount of walks he's issued lately, and he's looking to just go out there on Sunday and get back on track.

Josh Hamilton got yet another shot in his back, won't be available until Friday at the earliest, and might not be back before the regular season ends.

On the plus side, Matt Harrison had a pain-free bullpen session yesterday.

Tim Cowlishaw says Ron Washington should be in the mix for the Manager of the Year Award.

Jim Reeves has a column up on the Rangers finances, essentially stating that the Rangers couldn't sign Matt Purke because MLB wouldn't let them offer what the Rangers had planned.  There's more bleak news there, with Nolan Ryan saying that a sale won't happen before April or May at the earliest, which means that there will likely be no significant free agent additions this offseason, and Reeves also echoes T.R. Sullivan's earlier comments that MLB could end up making the Rangers bench Kevin Millwood down the stretch so his option won't vest.

Reeves basically paints a picture of a team that's turning into the Expos, when they were under the control of MLB.  Very cheerful.

Scenario

Tonight’s game gets rained out…will we have to play a home game in Seattle when we go there in October?

So would it just be postponed and played

at the end of the season if needed?

Interesting

We could end up playing Seattle once or twice at the end of the season, then turn around for a one game playoff.

Does that delay the start of the postseason?

Joey

over at BBTIA has some good thoughts up on the Reeves news as well.

Looks like RG was indeed correct in what he said a few weeks ago about Purke.

Anybody wanna give an impassioned defense of how Tom Hicks spends his money now?

I’m also wondering about TR’s take. He’s one of big the house organs for the Rangers when they need spin even though he technically works for MLB.

Wonder if he’s getting this out in the open to help the team and make MLB stand down in trying to keep Millwood from getting 180 IPs?

Thing is, if anybody deserves to be skipped because they look like they’re gassed, it’s that Fat Fuck Millwood.

Yeah...

And the Stars are in the top 5 each year in revenue in the NHL as well. But with the CBA problems between the NHLPA and the league, its just really, really hard for a hockey team to get sold to the point where the ownership selling doesn’t lose money in the deal.

Unfortunately, even though the Stars as an organization isn’t bleeding money, they’re on a low budget, can’t sign any free agents and are handcuffed from making any big trades.

I’m not a big fan of Hicks, either.

Again,MLBPA will have a field day with this if Millwood is benched for the season w/o probable cause.

It’s utterly ridiculous to do that. The Rangers agreed to pay Millwood his 12 mill option if he hit 180 innings, now the goons are speculating they may bench him so they don’t have to pay him.

Talk about a breach of contract. I would drag this fucking team down all winter if I was getting jipped of my money.

You agreed to do this, now do it and quit being a bitch Hicks,Selig..

Millwood

The MLBPA would have Selig’s head if he forced the Rangers to bench Millwood to keep the option from vesting.

Not surprising, though, considering Budzilla was one of the ringleaders of collusion. How that fuckhead became commissioner is beyond me.

I'd like this whole series to get rained out

Several reasons. First, we can reset our rotation and not use a #6 starter like Nippert on Wednesday. Second, if we replay this series at the end of the year, we’ll have Young and maybe Hamilton back.

Third, it will allow us to control our own destiny at the end of the year. After October 4, as long as we are within 1.5 games of Boston or Anaheim, we can play three more games and push our way into the playoffs. Plus, those three makeup games back in Texas would be exciting as hell.

That's very different than three games at the opposing team's home park

Not to mention the idea of ending the season with six games in three days.

Also, MLB agreed that, if the third makeup game had playoff implications, it would be played back in Houston at the end of the season.

We need to get at least one game in this weekend

so we can play a DH on that Monday back here after the season (when Seattle won’t give a shat about the season.

Losing all three games makes it too convenient for MLB to say they should be all made up in Seattle.

The only reason Houston had to play that home game in Milwaukee last year is because of the hurricane. Sorry if this is a Captain Obvious Moment but they weren’t playing the Brewers, they were playing the Cubs.

by Kinslerhomer on Sep 12, 2009 12:21 PM CDT reply actions

Son of a Bitch
The Rangers are faced with nearly identical circumstances tonight. Except that things get even tighter. Another lengthy pre-game delay might push the start back to nine or later. The teams are supposed to play two tomorrow starting at 12:35. The Rangers had a tough enough task earlier this week playing three games in 19 hours in Cleveland; another delay tonight and they are looking at playing three in 16 or 17 hours.

Or playing more games on the road than at home.

I'm wondering

if there’s a lot of jumping to conclusions going on here regarding the Ranger’s finances. Its hard for me to believe that the Rangers have had access to anything near the amount of funding that the Expos had access to before they were taken over. Also, our LA signings were big enough that MLB would have nixed them if they were really in control like we’re imagining they are.
The financial situation could become as bad as some say they already are, but, looking at the whole picture, that will be future development not something that has already happened.
I’ve read nothing that even pretends to be substatiated that the Rangers are being pressured to bench their veteran starting pitcher during a close playoff race. This kind of competitve manipulation would be at least as bad as cheating NBA refs. I can’t see how this would even be seriously contemplated by the powers that be. If so, this story will be a lot bigger than the Rangers being screwed during a playoff race.

Latin signings

the only guess i have there is that there isnt a slotting system for latin signings so there wasnt anything for selig to really enforce.

for the draft pick it seems it would have been easier to twist the arm and say to stay at slot.

I subscribe

so the club could have basically taken the slot money from the first round and instead invested that in Salinas/Profar, take the extra pick next year, and that would be the best allocation of the resources Bud made available. There were reports at the time that suggested the club may have known Purke was unsignable as soon as he was drafted. I didn’t believe them at the time, but now they seem to make more sense.

I believe I remember Jason Cole making a remark indicating that the high dollar IFA signings gave him some doubt about the ability to get the top draft pick signed.

Makes sense

If the club found out they had a limited budget to spend in the draft and Latin America, it makes a lot of sense to divert that money out of the first round (since you get a replacement pick the next year) and spend it on a couple of headliners in the IFA market.

Let's say that the entire series is rained out

if the show was on the other foot, and three got rained out in Seattle and MLB said that there would be six games in Texas in three days and Seattle was in the playoff race and Texas wasn’t …

Would you be opposed to the Rangers telling the Mariners that they would be fine with playing all six in Seattle instead of Texas?

I guess what I’m asking is, what are the chances that the Mariners tell MLB to move all six games to Texas since they’re out of the race anyway?

If I was a Seattle fan, I would not only be ok with it, I would say that it SHOULD happen.
