Evan Grant on the rain and the scheduling situation

Evan Grant has a lengthy post up at Inside Corner, explaining the problems with the rain, the forecast for this weekend, and the implications for the pennant race.

I assumed earlier this morning that if the Rangers and M's couldn't get all three games in this weekend, Seattle would come back after the regular season is over and play one or two or however many, if it impacts the pennant race.

That, however, is wrong, according to Grant.  Grant says if the Rangers and M's can't get all three games in this weekend, Texas will have to play the makeup games in Seattle in the last weekend of the season.

Awesome.  Just awesome.  Ownership is a disaster right now, we're not going to be able to add anyone of significance this offseason because the team is a ward of the state, making it that much harder to build on this season's success and add to the young and deep collection of talent on hand, and now the team's dwindling chances of making the playoffs are looking at taking another hit because of the weather.

What did Ranger fans ever do to piss off the Baseball Gods?

they just cant win no matter what they do
TV: There are national TV "windows" today and Sunday. Had the Rangers tried to play a doubleheader today, they would have had to schedule the first game at 6 p.m. or later or join the broadcast already in-progress so as not to interfere with FOX’s national broadcast window. On Sunday, they’d have to schedule the doubleheader in such a manner that the second game was not likely to start after 4 p.m. because ESPN has an evening broadcast window. Of course, the Rangers could just not televise one of the two games. The fallout: They’d probably lose significant dollars for not fulfilling their contracted number for telecasts with Fox Sports Net. You think this team can afford to lose dollars right now? Even without a terrible forecast, the more attractive option was to start earlier on Sunday in order to fit both games into the broadcast window. Even if Sunday’s second game runs long, it won’t be pre-empted. Once the game starts, you don’t have to worry about losing the broadcast.

Losing the revenue from 3 home games would hurt

About 4% of the home schedule, and a weekend series, so maybe over 5% of the season’s gate, concession, and parking revenue.

That’s significant collateral damage for a team that apparently needs every penny.

The Rangers only play one game of this series so they have to make up 2 games. One is in a DH on Oct.3 in Seattle. The other on Oct. 5 in Arlington if necessary. If the Rangers were to end up in a tie for the WC or division they could play the play-in game on Oct. 6 in Arlington or as a 3 team DH on Oct. 5.

boomer1, are you back? Training wheels off and no longer in the 8 hole?

Or are you the little defenseless girl with a curl who was getting curbed to such a frightening degree that 5-6 other posters had to beg that I stop?

Did I mention that the specific topic making you cry was Sam Bradford’s injury?

Now that’s funny,

Wouldn't have mattered if Harrell got hurt...

Leach could’ve walked outside that stadium and pull a kid off the intramural field and he’d put up numbers like Harrell did last year in that Imagination Land offense…

See: Kingsbury, Symons, Cumbie and Hodges before him…

Taylor Potts will do the same thing this year… It’s the magic of Leach’s offense… You have to be a complete and utter disaster to fail as a quarterback in that system.

Well, he did pick a student out of the student body last year

to be his kicker. The kid won a free years rent by kicking a 30 yd field goal at half time and Leach asked to speak to him. Kid was kicking extra points for Tech two games later.

Red Sox DH Sunday

They are starting the first game at 11am and the second at 4pm. Is this so they can clear the stadium and have two separate draws?

by JDavidd on Sep 12, 2009 2:16 PM CDT reply actions

I believe so

They have to start the second at 4 in order to avoid the national television blackout window and if it was a traditional DH they would just have one start time of about noon or 1 (assuming 3 hours per game). Having 2 separate start times tells me its like a day night DH only with two day games

Yeah really.

One time when I was a kid I wished my parents would just “disappear”..when I woke up the next morning they were gone. I was pretty excited, I jumped up and down on their bed and ate crackers…it was the greatest time ever. Well…until the robbers showed up trying to steal my parents stuff. I gave them a run for their money though…setting traps and such through out the house. Things got a bit harry but my curmudgeon neighbor saved the day. In the end though it turned out my parents didn’t disappear at all, they were just terrible parents that left me at home when they went on vacation.

We all miss you John Candy.

When he was retired...

He met Byron Russell for the first time and Russell was talkin about how he could guard him and wished he’d catch him somewhere in a pair of shorts…

Then he came outta retirement and got that chance (1996 Finals) and kinda took a little jab at Stockton… “Oh, you remember that huh John?” and JS kinda smirked and didn’t really acknowledge it…

It was just uncomfortable watching it… Kinda felt disrespectful to me on a night when Stockton is being inducted as well..

Robinson, Stockton, Sloan, and even Vivian Stringer way way way outclassed Jordan.

If you were to tell me before the yr that Rickey Henderson would deliver a more poignant, classy and humble speech than MJ i would have said you were crazy. However that is most definitely the case

I agree.

Granted Rickey and MJ are different in how good they were at their sport. Rickey was good at one or two aspects of baseball. MJ was a great total basketball player. They both had the same kind of mentality and mindset when playing the game (selfish etc.). But with Rickey’s speech, I gained a ton more respect for him. With MJ’s speech, ugh, I did a total face palm plant.

The chance of precipitation in Arlington does not drop below 70 percent until the calendar officially turns to Sunday. It has rained through the night and all day in Arlington varying from light showers to heavy rain

I think tonight’s games gets rained out. I also don’t have much hope for tomorrow’s games.
