Monday morning Rangers things
BP says the Rangers' odds of making the playoffs dropped from about 21% to about 14% from this time yesterday.
I am reminded of the episode of the Simpson's, where Homer is having a barbecue, and the pinnacle is the roast suckling pig on a grill. Lisa, who has recently converted the vegetarianism, is appalled by the meat-eating, and ends up rolling the grill away. The grill crashes through a hedge.
Homer: It's just a little dirty. It's still good, it's still good! [Grill passes through traffic, jumps a bridge and the pig lands in the water.] It's just a little slimy, it's still good, it's still good! [It gets caught in a dam spillway, and when the pressure builds, it shoots into the sky.]
Homer: It's just a little airborne, it's still good, it's still good!
Bart: [Crestfallen.] It's gone.
Homer: I know.
I don't feel that we as Rangers fans holding out hope for the playoffs are at the "It's just a little airborne" stage -- more like, "It's just a little slimy." But Texas is rapidly approaching the point where they are going to need to go at least 5-2 against Anaheim to stay in the race.
A split yesterday, with Tommy Hunter doing his thing in game 1, and Derek Holland continuing to struggle in game 2. Holland continues to go through growing pains in the rotation, although given the way King Felix shut down the bats in game 2, it didn't make a lot of difference how well Holland pitched.
Jeff (the writer) Miller has some post-game thoughts, as well.
Kevin Millwood, meanwhile, may have his next start skipped -- he threw on the side yesterday with Mike Maddux in an effort to work on some mechanical issues. Skipping Millwood would mean Hunter would go on Friday in the first game of the Anaheim series, with Scott Feldman and Brandon McCarthy presumably pitching the weekend games.
Anthony Andro writes about the things the Rangers did to kill time during the rain delays, and Marlon Byrd said Saturday night's game was the worst conditions he's played in in the majors.

You don’t win friends with salad!
One of my favorite episodes. We really need Millwood and Holland to get going again to have any chance. Tommy Hunter and Scott Feldman have to be two of the biggest surprises among starters in all of baseball. Not one of us thought Hunter would be doing this right now.
It’s great to see Davis making better contact, lots of loud outs among his efforts lately. Hard to get excited about playoff chances with some of the pitchers having bad stretches, Young still out and Hamilton’s back being the way it is. A season simultaneously filled with amazing hope, pleasant surprises and shocking disappointments.

my favorite quote from the episode was from mr. burns:
Burns: You know, Smithers, I think I’ll donate a million dollars to
the local orphanage…when pigs fly!
[They laugh. The pig sails across the sky before them.]
Smithers: Will you be donating that million dollars now, Sir?
Burns: Nooo, I’d still prefer not.

I hate to be...
one of the LSBers to say stick a fork in it, but stick a fork in it. Unless Boston or LAA has a huge collapse the Rangers are going to be on the outside looking in. The Rangers are playing pretty well. However the fact that the Rays completely rolled over for the BoSox while the M’s did the same for the Halos then got a couple W’s in Arlington was the killer.
Still a very nice season with a lot of postive things to take from it. I didn’t expect this team to be in contention for the playoffs this year. It has been a very nice surprise. Next year though, I will expect this team to win the West. The Rangers lose very little and the kids should perform better with one more young big piece of the future coming into play.

i like to think of it as interest free savings…
in addition to my seats for the entire length of the playoffs i bought eight additional seats for the first home playoff game (game three in a best-of-five against NYY).
if the decision was mine today, i would still buy the tickets – all of them. it’s too big of a risk not to. that said, it’s TEX must sweep OAK and BOS needs to get swept by LAA. not going to catch the angels.
