Jeremy (Displaced Ranger fan in NYC):
Hi Buster. I have two questions (1) Are the Rangers actually building a contending team or did they just play over their heads this year; and (2) What do you make of Hicks' statement that MLB didn't stop them from signing Purke or blocking the Kazmir move?
Buster Olney (1:11 PM):
Jeremy -- No. 1, I think they've put together a great core of players that could be really, really good for 2010 and 2011, at least. And No. 2, I think the Rangers' financial problems are serious, moreso than what Mr. Hicks said the other day.

Hicks is broke
I have to give Hicks credit for one thing, he did (FINALLY) hire JD. This organization rocks right now. I love them. Hicks can go bankrupt for all I care.
Hicks isn't "broke."
He’s simply decided not to be the personal guarantor for HSG’s massive debt obligations anymore, which means HSG’s creditors are a little more nervous now than they used to be.
At what point
do the creditors just force HSG into bankruptcy?

I wonder what Hick's personal
financial situation really is? He may not be the guarantor because he can’t not because he doesn’t want to do it.

I think thats probably the real truth.
Not that he is broke necessarily, but he is completely illiquid, and has to sell holdings to pay debt, and isn’t willing to sell at current market prices.

So push will never come to shove on this?
He can just stave off the wolves until he feels it is a good time to sell?
How the hell does that work?
Hank is the elephant in the room. When will he disappear?

For reasons that make no sense to me
his creditors don’t want to push him.

the debt was either personally guaranteed
or it wasn’t. can’t just change your mind. sure, he apparantly stopped personally funding HSG’s losses, which seems strange for a self-proclaimed billionaire.
The season is ending on a downer
One reason is that the playoffs are looking more remote by the day but that will pass with time when I look at what a great year they had and mostly with a bunch of kids. Eventually, I will get some perspective on the year and be very proud.
But the main reason I am discouraged is the financial mess. This cant do anything but hurt. Bud Selig is running our club and that sucks. Hopefully, a new owner can be found and put in place before too much long term damage is done.
Glass half full
or maybe quarter full…
I have a lot of trust in JD and the F.O. these days (including Nolan, whose contribution is somewhat undefined to this point, but there is no evidence that it has been anything other than positive).
That said, there are only a few ways to actively destroy the type of progress that this organization has made in the past three-four years. Obviously there is the passive bad luck possibility, where all our prospects fail. But barring that, this team should be competitive for the next 5 years if left to its own devices.
Active failure is a more worrisome prospect. One type of active failure is trading young players for older players who aren’t really any better but cost a lot more. The downside here is obvious, but a trade of a Martin Perez for some team’s arbitration eligible 4th starter (who probably would have been non-tendered anyway) is the type of thing I used to worry about and simply won’t happen now.
Another type is to succumb to the urge to go out and sign players who we really don’t need but look good on paper (i.e., someone like John Lackey or Vlad Guerrero). This has the effect of clogging our roster long term for what really amounts to a short-term problem. While the team could probably stand to have a few smart bullpen signings (though I still prefer NRI’s and smart roster snags, a la Madrigal and O’Day), I don’t see any huge needs of the club outside a potent bat to help face lefties.
Everyone is throwing their arms up in panic about Hicks, but I see his difficulties as a signal that we won’t go spending money on bad contracts, sacrificing draft picks and future financial flexibility in the process. I’d rather go into 2010 with the roster as is (with a few smart bullpen NRIs and maybe a random can’t field much RHB, a la Andruw Jones this year). The team is lean and in good long-term shape contracts-wise. Obviously it’d be better if the team had Boston’s money. But in a financial crisis, I’d much rather have a team with the Rangers outlook than just about any other.

HSG's situation did have an effect this year
JD was unable to take on any money. Victor Martinez sure would have looked good in a Ranger uniform.
I agree with most of what you said. The bullpen won’t be losing many pieces next year. They could use a loogy but that is not a priority. With the team’s desire to break in SPs through tthe pen, I am not sure they need any NRIs RPs.

Obviously there is an effect
but you can’t just look at these things in isolation. Yeah, Victor Martinez would look good in Rangers red/blue. But would Feliz look just as good in an Indians uniform?
I was advocating making a move at the deadline. But my point is that having an empty wallet may just save us from ourselves. If the Indians had offered Martinez for Feliz, and Texas could have afforded him, I imagine the pressure would have been very great to pull the trigger. Right now, I’m happy that they didn’t even have the option.
Go Rice Owls!
Very good post
"Back on the scene, with a gangsta lean" RW
"When you have a weapon on your shoulder like he has, you can be cool." RW on Perez
And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.
If you have a lot of trust in the front office, then I don't think you should be worrying so much about bad contracts
This line of reasoning made sense when we had John Hart running things, but I think I’d rather give JD a checkbook instead of not giving him a checkbook.
exactly it's ALWAYS better to have the money option...
You can candy coat it however you like. Of course you’d rather have the option of doing things like the Angels, Yankees and Red Sox do. If they need something they go out and get it. If your FO is smart they’ll hopefully make the right moves and you’ll instantly have a better team instead of waiting for prospects to bear fruit, which may or may not happen and will take years and years. It would be nice to be able to do both.
HH is that a sock in your puppet or are you happy to see me?
Well
it’s been a fun season while it lasted. Go Cowboys!

the season isn't over
and screw football. i get enough football talk during the baseball season as it is. Cowboys overrated and not going anywhere.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
That storm is moving like an iceberg
in a counterclockwise motion and is now just getting ready to hit DFW.
I don’t think we’re playing tonight.
DH on Wednesday?

the weather should be clearing up tomorrow and Wednesday.

That would probably mean
the pitchers for the LAA series would be Hunter, Holland and Feldman. I am assuming Feldman would pitch on Tuesday and Nippert and BMac on Wed.

the rain is supposed to go away by game time.
All I see is a radar that doesn’t seem to be very baseball-friendly.

Is that "wheel" of precipiation
going to miss Arlington?
There is precipitation all the way up to Gainesville and it is moving very slowly to the south.

It's very light and seems to be dissipating at the moment
Once this last little bit moves through, looks to be all clear
