Tuesday a.m. Rangers things
Another game gone. 19 to go. Anaheim lost as well, so no ground was lost, but things are looking pretty bleak as far as playoff chances go right now.
Jeff Wilson says that being shut out in a critical game by Brett Tomko, of all people, was a punch in the gut to the Rangers.
Evan Grant says the Ranger offense looked tired and lacked energy.
Jeff (the writer) Miller notes that Scott Feldman looked like he was cruising, and might be able to record his first every complete game, before suddenly losing his command and opening the door for a couple of big Oakland innings.
Kevin Millwood is working on his mechanics in a side session, and Derek Holland's next start will be Monday, giving him a little extra rest.
C.J. Wilson is hosting a charity event on Thursday where you can buy "Wolfpack" t-shirts.

Evan Grant is correct.
This team’s offense does look tired and lacks energy.
One of the problems in basing judgments solely on stats is how to evaluate the Rangers over the last 10 games. A lot of their individual numbers don’t look too bad but the problem is most of those numbers were built on their 3 game 19 hour blitz of the Cleveland pitching staff who collectively did not have the stomach for the fight.
The problem is that in the 7 games (Rangers 2-5 in those games) between Baltimore, Seattle and Oakland this month we have scored 19 runs (shutout three times!!).
Cleveland is no longer on the schedule so we need to do something else. Banging our heads on the wall is not working.
How do you “create energy” for this offense?

It might be time for the Hank F. resurrection, JW.
11-9 since the latest changes were made.
Have to go 13-6 the rest of the way to justify the presence of Chris F.

I don't know what you do.
Hank F has been buried (4 plate appearances since September 2) so it is going to take a while to get his timing back and we can’t wait for him to find it again. Then again if he does find it, maybe the team gets some much needed energy.
Something is also going on that we’re not privy to or is being hidden from the fans.
Go back to when Blalock last played (right after MYoung hammy injury) in the last game v Toronto. Wash made a big deal out of saying that Blalock at 1B (with CD at 3B) was not going to happen very often. Hank F went out and had a very good game and Wash made the necessary defensive replacements at the end of the game and makes sure everybody knows this alignment is going to happen very much once again.
Blalock plays 4 days later (Evan Grant comes off the top rope and publicly questions why Hank F is in the line-up) and Hank F hasn’t been seen since. Why the hell would EG come out and say what he said?
Something is up. Dunno if he has off the field issues, is being a bad guy in the room or if JD is this fucking stupid. Maybe a combo platter of all three items.
I do know that what Wash is doing every night is not working and something needs to be done.

Maybe Hank’s hit like a one-armed Girl Scout since the All-Star Break, had his chances to find his timing, and the team’s just sick of watching him suck?

Nope.
Hank F was gassed from playing 45 games in a row (or whatever it was) and needed some kind of break. I said this over and over when it was happening.
JD sat there with his thumbs up his ass at the trade deadline and didn’t acquire a RH bat that torched LH pitching and got on base.
He hadn’t played this much in the field every day in 2007 & 2008 and his bat was slowing down for some reason (a reason not related to age because he’s 28 years old) plus he was hitting in some really bad luck. Not taking walks was unacceptable but it wasn’t something symptomatic of his entire career either.
Per your question, I don’t know what the Ranger record would be right now if Blalock had played every day, Adam. Nobody does. I’m not dodging your question, I don’t know the answer.
I do know that the June Swoon ended on a dime and a 28-19 streak happened when Hank F started playing every day. When Davis comes up, the record immediately regresses.
Why is that ? I don’t know but it happened again.
I also know “the plan” of burying Blalock and playing Davis every day isn’t working and that’s why you get shutout at home by Brett Freaking Tomko at home during the most important time of year.

If that’s your argument, then playing “the plan” of playing Nelson Cruz every day isn’t working.
“The plan” of Pudge Rodriguez being the starting catcher isn’t working.
“The plan” of Ian Kinsler playing every day isn’t working.
“The plan” of Omar Vizquel and Esteban German platooning at third base isn’t working.
You don’t get to point to one particular move — which has resulted, btw, in a net improvement in performance — and say that because the team is falling out of the race, that move isn’t working and is the reason why.
by Adam J. Morris on Sep 15, 2009 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Adam
That’s exactly the crutch somebody like JD can use to justify the move and subsequent burying of Hank F. He can say his .560 OPS post AS Break was killing the team and he simply needed to be replaced (and then buried). One problem with that line of thinking.
Line-ups and teams in baseball are all very susceptible to the undefined intangible of chemistry.
I’m a definite hard-ass when it comes to taking sabermetric evidence over intangible bullshit but I don’t completely dismiss intangible bullshit (how do the Rox become that good after running their manager?) in baseball.
With Hank F & Davis we can isolate their influences on the team and it’s obvious how much energy the team drew from Hank after that glorious night in July.
You may choose to call it yet another coincidence in a long line of coincidences but the evidence is pretty clear to me.

Hitting is a science.
In science, if you cannot measure something, then it does not exist. We believe that you cannot measure “intangibles” or “chemistry”, and therefore they do not exist.
Please, if you have proof or can link to someone else’s proof of chemistry (and I mean a scientist, not some ex-player who claims it’s important), then by all means refute us.

What am i getting
at is that i dont know you really know what the “room” (as you put it) is. You keep pointing to the Rangers record when Blalock was playing which is an implication that Blalock caused them to play better despite his noted poor performance. You know honestly i could buy that if it were a few games where MY’s best friend is Blalock and he is happy that he is back in the lineup. HOWEVER, real ballplayers play hard regardless and REAL ballplayers care about performance.
Ive got you pegged finally. You were that kid in HS that played sports to be on the team. You sucked and criticized the coach for not playing you because you could have made a difference. I call it Uncle Rico syndrome. This has skewed your opinions and views on sports all your life. You have channeld this lifelong frustration into memorizing stats but this has not increased your understanding of baseball.
Now im not saying you have to have experience in playing baseball to be relevant but i am saying that some past experiences can have an affect on your understanding or, in this case, the lack thereof. Ive known several ppl that had little to no baseball talent that made awesome observations on baseball that i didnt think about. Or they have an impressive understaning of stats that i did not possess in college.

Chemistry in baseball is way, way overrated as a concept. Maybe not in football, but in baseball? Definitely.

That number is also significantly below the winning % (.596) they had when Hank F was playing 1B in July & August and CD was in OKC.

And honestly? It’s pretty damned sad of you. This team’s well ahead of where pretty much everyone thought they’d be. They’ve fought through a ton of injuries and broken in a number of young players. Yet all you can do is bitch and moan, while chiding others for not being able to appreciate this season.

unless the Rangers win a few games (refering to Evan’s article). Rooting for the Sox because the Rangers cannot control their WC destiny as much as they can control their destiny in the division.

What would it take to get B. Webb?
I read that Ari doesn’t look like they will be picking up his 8.5M option. They said that they will try to sign him to a smaller number.

Has voiced his displeasure with the way that skit ended. He thought Chris should have won because everybody was already expecting the fat jokes, but it’s an interesting discussion from a writer’s standpoint.

There's no twist
But in a way there is, since the combination of sympathy and comedy might lead you to believe Farley would win, only to have a stone-faced Nealon bash us with honesty.
Either way, funny shit.

I kind of agree with Rock
about how a twist might have made it even better, but for Rock to say that sketch had some larger implication in Farley’s life is a bit much. Farley was who he was and that sketch is certainly more symptom than disease if he wants to point to that as some sort of evidence.

The poetry of M Lem
Where’s tron?
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090911&content_id=6909956&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
When Marcus Lemon meets people, he often doesn’t tell people he’s a baseball player. He’ll describe himself as an artist — he’s an accomplished one who often does portraits of teammates’ families — or someone who likes to write. It allows him to be free of any pigeonholing someone might instinctively do when they hear he’s a professional athlete.
“I like it because it makes me feel like I’m not just a baseball player,” said Lemon, the son of Chet Lemon. “It’s not just about baseball. It’s a whole other side of me I can do.”
Wherever Lemon goes, he brings books with him, so he can record his thoughts whenever he needs to. It’s something that began when his high school teacher gave him a book while he was playing on a high school travel team. He has filled volumes since, talking about achievements as well as sadness.
It provided great solace for him when his father was gravely ill a few years ago. Lemon wrote about his feelings during that time in a powerful 710-word piece he called “Farewell Father,” an excerpt of which he has allowed to run with this story.
“It’s a proactive way to express myself,” said Lemon, who was truly touched that those he showed this poem felt they could understand his emotions. “It’s an outlet.”
He’s written about Hurricane Katrina and even about the travails of trying to fulfill a dream of making it to the big leagues. It’s not often these bards use the game itself as inspiration, instead choosing poetry as a means to show a different side of themselves. But sometimes, at least for Lemon, it’s a way to get out his frustrations from a game where getting a hit 30 percent of the time is deemed successful.
“You fail more than you succeed and still be one of the best,” Lemon said. “It’s an outlet to not do something you’d regret. I travel a lot. Sometimes it’s hard to find a person to talk to, so it’s easier to just jot down things.”

Something positive...
I was thinking about the starting rotation. When was the last time the Rangers had a “homegrown” starting pitcher in their rotation for most of the season before Feldman last year?
Answer : 2001 Doug Davis. Ouch.
The Rangers now have Feldman, Hunter, and Holland all in the rotation. Not to mention BGL and Fx2 in the ’pen. As tough as these last couple weeks have been we all know the corner has been turned. JD and the Rangers FO have things on track for a big run. We still need to be a little patient, but the time is coming.

Just out of curiosity
What series do you guys think was the downfall in the Rangers playoff chances?? imo this may come as a shocker, but my opinion would be that it was the 4 game series at Minnesota at home. After having beaten the Red Sox and having taken the lead in the WC, we needed a sweep or a minimum 3 out of 4, but to come out and lose 2 games in which we were ahead and give the WC lead back after what could have been one of the most important series was huge.

I'd say going 1-3 against Oakland in August hurt the team's chances the most
It looks like its happening against with Oakland. Its a bad team and a very winnable series yet the Rangers can’t put a win together. We can beat up on LAA and Boston all we want, but if you can’t win the games you’re supposed to win, then you aren’t going to make the playoffs.

Losing 2 of 3 to BAL hurt
That is a series a good team sweeps. At a minimum, you should take 2 of 3. Had we swept, we would have had a 9-game winning streak (after the sweep of TOR and before the sweep of CLE) and had some serious momentum in September.

In a bit of happy news
the Rangers lone minor league team in the playoffs, Bakersfield, won last night with Kennil Gomez allowing only 1 run in 6 and 2/3rds innings. It looks like the Blaze have actually gotten very solid pitching from their starters only to be done in by their own offense in Game 1 – sound familiar ? – and their bullpen in Game 2. Well, they play again tonight in a must win situation at home against SJ. Go Blaze!!!

The 2-5 v Baltimore (which had won one series after the AS Break), Oakland and Seattle
at the most important time of year is what killed the team.
Go 5-2 in those games and we’re 3 behind LAAA and 1.5 behind Boston.

All the Josey garbage filling this thread aside
it is September 15th and we are still playing meaningful baseball. We won’t be eliminated until their magic number hits zero. I have enjoyed this season, although, I have been frustrated through most of it watching the way our hitters usually approach an AB. We have been staying in this race against Boston and LAA, two teams that have consistently won and know how to win. They have a swagger and confidence in every game. This year, even if the Rangers don’t make the playoffs, can go a long ways in teaching these young players how to win come september, especially after a grueling season.
Go Rangers, let’s make the last 3 weeks of the season memorable.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
