1 run in 3 games, lose 4 out of 5 to the m's/a's....
just terrible. to think if we had actually taken care of business and won 4 of 5 we could bei n a position to tie the angels with the miracle sweep? Now miracle sweep or no we are still way behind. So yes, the fork is probably safe at this point.
I’ll hope for a miracle though.
the preceding post was a great success.

Not much to say about this team right now.
Anybody remember what’s on TV on Tuesdays? Any big premieres tonight that I’m not realizing?

Yep
Parks and Recreation was picked up for a full season so it may slide into that time slot. While Amy Poehler is funny and Parks and Rec had its moments, I don’t see it being successful.

Not that I know of
It was created by Rob Mcelhenney, who plays Mac on the show. It is mainly written by Rob and two other people who are on the show, Glenn Howerton, who plays Dennis, and Charlie Day who plays Charlie. The first season was only seven episodes but was popular enough that Danny Devito joined the cast as the dad of two of the characters. Season five premiers this week and there will be at least two more seasons after this one.

not sure when exactly
but “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” comes back on sometime in the next couple of weeks. If you like funny TV, then you owe it to yourself to catch this…it’s on FX. Since the demise of Arrested Development, this is easily the funniest show on TV. Funnier than The Office, in my opinion. and I think The Office is hilarious.

I’ve never seen a “fan” of a team take so much pleasure in his team losing so he can rub it in the faces of other fans. If that isn’t a troll I don’t know what is. I don’t want to hear how he’s funny or adds something to the conversation either, because he doesn’t. If you want to keep him around because everyone responds to him so there’s more posts on the blog at least be honest about it. Don’t pull a TAG and tell me he’s made some quality posts though. Big difference between Kinsler & Davis.
Kinsler is going to put up a 30-30 this year and isn’t on the team solely because the GM drafted him. The kid is a star with the upsided to become a superstar.
Since September 2, Chris Davis has rocked an 8 for 43 (.186). When his ass was shipped to OKC, his obp was .256 and it currently sits at .263.
His batting average was .202 and his obp was .256 and now it’s at .214/.263.
All of that “improvement” can be attributed to four very shaky infield hits (the squibber in front of Jeter, the two balls that Overbay fucked up and the play ACabrera should have made in Cleveland). Take those four hits away and he’s back to .202 and his obp would be below .256.
Chris Davis is playing on the major league team solely because the GM drafted him yet has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that he has no business playing in The Show this year, especially at the most important time of year.
In the last 47 games that Chris Davis has been playing every day (while Hank F was in heavy platoon or buried as he is now), the Rangers are 22-25.
In the last 47 games that Hank F was playing every day while Chris Davis was in OKC, the Rangers were 28-19.
Probably yet another coincidence, I’m sure.

Please move on to something else. This is like pointing out that Sandra Bernhard has a funny shaped mole on her arm.
There is alot more to fix on this team than that little mole.

considering they both suck, yes better defense makes more sense
but the prevailing theory was that he magically unsucked after working out his problems against non major league pitching. post after post citing his reworked offense and predicting greatness at the plate. very few people saying what you logically reference now. as best i remember the debate was focused 99% on how much hank sucked at the plate (one walk since the break, etc) and how davis was going to provide the offensive boost the team needed. that hasn’t happened.

Adam,
What’s your take on Davis since coming back up?
To me, he’s not drowning (K’s waaaay down) so in a sense he’s better but there’s nobody who can outrun 4 walks in 84 plate appearances and still be considered productive.
I also have no idea what to expect from Davis next year and beyond and I consider him the biggest question mark moving forward to 2010.

He's been better than before he was sent down
But he’s still not performing. He’s been hitting the ball harder, which makes me encouraged that he’s going to get there, but I’m still not real, real confident in him, and I don’t think we can go into 2010 expecting to contend with him and Smoak as our Plan A for 1B and DH.

fuck you for blaming the fans. fuck everyone that posts from home in their underoos bitching about people not going to the games. this franchise has been a piece of shit for three decades save a couple of seasons. the team is essentially .500 since july 31st and barely over .500 since may 30th. i go to a lot of games, but don’t criticize others for not climbing over themselves when the team is slightly above average. i had to listen to this shit on my drive in to work this morning. fuck that fat-headed cock sucker – glad he lost his job with the cowboys. the biggest fuck on that morning station goes to fernando (the phone slap who shouldn’t even be heard on the air) who’s such a condescending prick that he’ll never get a decent job on radio.

Couldn't agree more..
The Musers were driving me nuts this morning, especially Junior trumpeting how baseball fans should be happy to go out on a rainy night to support a team that’s hasn’t any skins on the wall. Yeah, I’m loading up my kids and hauling them to Arlington on a Monday night to possibly get rained out and watch lethargic ball.
Any chance they had to draw well this homestand went out the window with the bad baseball in BAL and the horrific weather other the weekend. Deal with it.
However, their points about how awful the marketing was this year were spot-on. Tgis team managed to compete all year, and we we get is plastic bowls and Ian BP commericals?? WTF? Don’t we need a President to work on marketing this thing??

I tried to call in
I can’t take any more of this Ticket crap about population centers, covering the ballpark, football, school, economy, etc. There are enough baseball fans in Arlington and the mid-cities alone that could fill that place up this week. There’s something else going on…
I can only speak for myself, but the poor goodwill Tom Hicks and John Hart generated by their handling of this team is what gives me pause before spending a dime on tickets and concessions at the ballpark. I’m a huge baseball fan and purchased season tickets in the late 90’s, but after getting (in my opinion) shafted by ownership and FO for years, I made a promise to spend as little money as possible in support of Tom Hicks’ baseball business until things change. My only vote as a fan is with my wallet. So I’m in the awkward position of rooting like hell for on-field success and financial failure of an owner who I feel doesn’t care about the team or fans. I truly don’t go unless I get a free or discount ticket.
It’s too bad a great young team has to pay for someone else’s sins of the past, but I’m still bitter. The Rangers are getting their return on fan investment. Go ask the Mavs and Cowboys how to cultivate a rabid fan base. It’s not by squeezing money and then not re-investing it in the product.

Salty update
The doctor the Texas catcher met with in St. Louis confirmed thoracic outlet syndrome. Saltalamacchia will meet with Dr. Greg Pearl tomorrow and go over his options. He’ll likely have surgery because the rehab process has about a 50-50 success rate.

Which brings up the question.. well it really doesn’t but I will ask anyway. Should the Ranger resign Pudge? A cool $1M should do it. TT would probably have to be traded and Salty would split time with Pudge.

His defense has gotten much better
but his bat is still not good. For a guy that was supposed to be an offensive force at the catching position, his low average and basically no power aren’t getting it done.

I have no problem with him or Teagarden being our starting catcher, I just think that if possible we should try and get someone to improve the position. .240 with 15 homers is not awful, but I think we should try for more.

Well, his ISO did jump 27 points this year
But that doesn’t mean shit when you consider his walk rate nearly halved and his OBP took a 62 point plummet.
I don’t know what happened, but Salty might be the posterboy for our horrendus change in approach from 2008 to 2009.

Yeah
But come on. His attitude sucks, and it’s obvious he doesn’t give it his all every game. In tough situations he swings for the fence no matter what. You just can’t hit a homerun everytime you come up. Then he calls out the fans…he’s an easy guy to hate if you have been following this team all year. He made it seem like they had no fans at all, and Dallas hates everything about the team, and baseball.
If you say you don’t expect the fans to come out it’s not going to help anything. It was a stupid thing to say. Instead of whining, and saying the fans suck. Encourage them to come out, and play your hardest on the field.

The Rangers are now 12th in the AL in OBP
Oakland is 11th. We are now officially getting less on-base than Oakland. We are in the bottom 3 in the AL in walks. We are in the top 3 in the AL in strikeouts. Give me an example of any management position, doesn’t have to be baseball related, where you plummet about 12 spots in your performance review and, not only do you get rehired for the next year, but you get an increase in salary. Because my gut is telling me that’s about to be what happens for Rudy Jaramillo.

Look at all the guys around Worsh
None of them are his guys. What makes you think they’ll allow him to get his own guy now?

good point
I also believe that JD & Co have looked at the offenses around the league and know what it takes to have a consistent, playoff caliber offense. In Rudy’s 15 years the team has finished in the top 5 in OBP (AL) 4 times. Two of those years (98, 99) they were in the playoffs. Thier avg finish the last 7 years is 8th in the AL.
When Ron came to the Rangers he said he wanted his team to work the count, etc, etc, etc. At times they do but not on a consistent basis. Some of it is player’s skills, but I think much of it is simply desire,or lack of, to swing at good pitches and make the pitcher work for each out.

I don't think Rudy J should lose his job.
The team scored 901 runs in 2008 and had what, something like a .354 obp.
The man can teach hitting but he can’t make chickensalad out of chickenshat.

That, and a handful of young guys who hadn't been indoctrinated yet..
Check out Salty’s OBP last year for one.. It seems that guys from outside the system propped it up last year.

Granted, I'm not denying the importance of OBP
But I think when judging performance over a long period of time, runs scored is a much better indicator of success for your hitting coach

Not just Board Game
Byrd had a career high 380 OBP, Kinsler had a 375 OBP, Hammy had a 371 OBP…hell, even Vazquez put up a 366 OBP.
The anomaly was caused by a bunch of guys who had career years in terms of getting on base.

And...
guys relatively new to the team. Not discounting the career years, but I think the guys new to the system take a while to fall in line.

You must know Bradley's OPS did not bring the team's up by that much
So you’re saying that Bradley influenced the rest of the clubhouse in their approach by that much?

Important Message, imo
you need to go the ballpark, to the shop in centerfield
They are selling last year’s authentic, customizable jerseys for $50. I for one got the white one, with an F, E, L, I, Z, 3, and 0. They put on the “30” for me, but I need to go to a dry cleaner to put Feliz’s name on it.
Regardless, an authentic, white Feliz jersey (although it says “Rangers,” not “Texas” on the front) for only $75 (the letters/numbers cost a small bit)

Nolan Ryan Interview with Norm
Happy talk, Norm asked Ryan if he had ever been called “Lynn” and he said laughed and said “No.”
Norm belted out a bunch of achievements from Nolan and asked him about it and Ryan said “I don’t think too much about it.”
Asked if anybody owned him as a pitcher -
Ryan said Mark Belanger (.210 hitter) just frustrated the hell out of him because he couldn’t get him out.
Proud of the resiliency of the team?
Affirmative. Lots of blather on them not giving up.
Agreed that the team has hit a wall and also said he’s rooting for the Red Sox.
Attendance?
Ryan disappointed that they haven’t had more support in final run but understands challenges of weather and school, cites Mondays & Tuesdays as their toughest nights.
Shutting down young starting pitchers throughout the league now common at this time of year, what about Holland?
No thoughts on shutting down Holland. Still throwing well but not locating pitches. Feel like the innings are starting to show but that this is part of his development. Don’t see anything with his mechanics to shut him down.
Millwood Situation?
Not going to shut him down because team is in pennant race and they need him. Hasn’t thrown well over last two months so they moved him back in an attempt to make him stronger. Will not shut him down to keep him from being vested.
Sale of club?
MLB has deadline for bids to find out who is interested (thought it was August 15) and Ryan said he heard from rumor mill that there were 5-6 bids. Doesn’t really know anything about the timing. Has been told by Tom Hicks that Ryan will have a chance to be a part of things going forward.
Will sale of club go into next season?
Yes. Lots of moving parts into sale of ballclub and things haven’t moved quickly to this point.
Will hands be tied in the off-season?
Concerned now about this season and haven’t look where they are going to be budget-wise next season. Until they have a game plan and know what their restricitions will be, they don’t know.
How much control does MLB have over Rangers?
If team does things within their budget and asks to go outside of said budget they go to Hicks. They went to Hicks on a couple of players and things didn’t work out.
Did MLB limit what they could offer Purke?
The Commish establishes a slot depending on where your number one can be. Says team offered him $ 4 million and that he wanted 2.5 times above slot and he wanted more.
Contract status?
Handshake agreement with Hicks.
Heard Fake Nolan Ryan on The Ticket?
Yes. Says it’s something else when they recognize your voice at the Whataburger Drive-Thru.
