Friday a.m. Rangers stuff
And so the Angels come to town this weekend...
Jeff Wilson says the Rangers' playoff hopes are still alive, although they pretty much need to sweep Anaheim to stay in the race.
Evan Grant says newly signed draft choice Tanner Scheppers had a rotator cuff tear, not a stress fracture, as was originally diagnosed, but that the tear has healed through rest and rehab.
Ron Hopkins and Jon Daniels are quoted talking about Scheppers, whose injury issues caused him to slide, but who the Rangers think is healthy now.
Kevin Sherrington says that the Rangers' pattern this season has been to be awful, then bounce back and get back in it, and this weekend gives them the opportunity to exhibit that resilience once again.
Randy Galloway talks about Tom Hicks being broke, with Matt Purke, Kevin Millwood, and the possibility of 2010 payroll dropping to $50 million being prominently discussed.

Galloway
I didn’t even get past the third paragraph.
The name of the soccer team is not the “Liverpool Reds.” Liverpool FC is the official name; Reds are their nickname.
And while I’m no fan of Hicks owning the club, they did get two new sponsorship deals lined up this past week, and confirmed that a fair amount of headway was made this summer in paying down the club’s debt. So the claims of financial improvement appear to be real, at least where LFC is concerned.

I know nothing about soccer so I missed that.
I guess it was that he wasn’t blindly ripping JD.
I’ll also admit this is the first time I’ve read him in a loooong time.

Yeah, that was an incredibly "meh" column..
He’s clearly in grassy knoll mode about the Purke non-signing, but other than that it’s pretty superficial.

Galloway on Purke
Ugh.
On Purke, Hicks termed it “strictly our call not to go above” what he said was an offer of $4 million. If true, that would mean the likes of Nolan Ryan and Jon Daniels suddenly wasted months of detail work in deciding to draft Purke, and then Ryan and Daniels also decided it was OK to look like idiots in not getting the deal done. Who believes that?
No, that means they had a price they thought was fair and weren’t willing to go above it. Apparently Galloway believes they should have signed Purke at any price.
They knew from the start it would take at least $6 million to sign the kid. Just guessing, but both Nolan and Daniels are still reeling from the sudden failure of that money to surface.
No, they knew from the start that Purke was asking for $6 million, and that his talent was worth the risk involved in maybe not signing him. If the Rangers had signed for $6 million and he had then been injured or just busted I’m sure Galloway would have written that it was a stupid waste of money.
I’m sick of writers not understand the risks/rewards and values involved in player acquisition. Or, with Galloway, perhaps purposely misunderstanding it to make some other point. Galloway has added absolutely nothing to the discussion of Hicks and his finances with this or any other article. He’s entitled to his opinion, but his opinion isn’t worth any more than about 200 posters on this blog.

4 Million would have been a top 5 bonus
in this draft. It is stupid to turn that down.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
If I recall correctly
it would have been one of the highest bonuses given w/o a ML contract.

He has great “raw” tools. I never like that term, and for me, at some point you have to show something on paper. Some characteristics about players cannot be summed up in a stat or on paper, like in the case of Andrus, although there is still alot that can be said about stats in baseball. The very basic of being an offensive threat starts with making contact and pitch recognition. When you can’t make contact, you can’t be a successful hitter.

Scheppers
Rotator cuff tear doesn’t sound good, self-healed or not.
I still think that if this kid can recover, he’ll have a career that will make us all forget about Purke. But that can’t be better than a 50% shot right now.
Go Rice Owls!
he's got a better shot at success in the majors than Purke, I'd say
as far as how far away he is from being called up and his professional experience (not to mention college experience) thus far.

They each have big risks
But I’ll take the very high ceiling college guy (whose risk is mostly due to injury) over the healthy high ceiling high school pitcher (whose risk is that high school pitchers fail at high percentages)
Go Rice Owls!
Contribution Expectancy
We also have to remember that Scheppers is four years older than Purke. Yes he is more experienced with his years at Fresno State as well as his couple months with the St. Paul Saints. He still, however, has a long ways to go with regards to learning how to pitch at the professional level.
The two main topics they discussed in the interview yesterday were the injury and his stuff. They also mentioned his difficulty in pitching to more advanced competition in the professional independent leagues. Scheppers was treading water in the Independent League, relying simply on his blazing fastball and his developing secondary stuff.
The statements don’t make me feel any more comfortable about his future contributions than Purke. Both would need a lot of work in this system before they are ready to make a signfiicant contribution. Who’s to say who is more likely to learn and develop, I don’t know. They both have tremendous upside and high ceilings. I’m not willing to put a number on it yet, Scheppers just isn’t that advanced.
I’m excited to track both of their successes. It should be a fun ride.
I didn't make this clear but...
I full understand Purke went to TCU and the Rangers are not retaining his rights.
Not exactly. You might want to read the article again.
The point was Scheppers has pitched (sucessfully) against much better talent. It is why he was considered bound for Frisco if he signed early enough. Sending Tanner to AA is not an action of a FO that thinks he needs a lot of development.

Indeed:
“He threw free and easy every time. He threw hard,” scouting director Ron Hopkins said. “This spring, he had four pitches. In independent baseball, the hitters are more advanced. You have to move pitches around and change speeds. He made a lot of progress doing that.”

Certainly...
I actually listened to the broadcast and didn’t read the article. I understand the comment and fully expected those reports to come out during a press conference.
The reality is he pitched three regular season games for the St. Paul Saints. I believe he pitched an exhibition game as well, if I recall correctly. Two were on the road and one was at home (I was at the home game). He struggled with command of his breaking stuff and used the heater to overpower clearly overmatched hitters. He was often wild and out of the zone. His fastball was regularly registering in the upper 90’s and triple digits a couple times, most likely with the help of a favorable home radar. It’s easy to like his fastball however nothing I saw showed he had any real ability to throw anything else.
I’m not sure I can trust three games, which he didn’t really pitch THAT successfully anyhow, as an indicator that his other pitches are ready.
His line was:
14 innings, 14 hits, 8 walks, 15 K’s. 3.60 ERA , 1.47 WHIP, 1.9 BB/K, 9+ K/9. These numbers aren’t bad but they certainly aren’t dominating. The game I saw was certainly his worst with 5 walks and 2 hits in 4 innings. IIRC he left the bases loaded in the 4th, relying completely on his fastball by the end.
I understand the rumor that he was to go to AA. I have a hard time believing he’d succeed there. I would imagine it is more related to his age than anything. These scouts certainly know more than I do about this, however I just wasn’t watching the same pitcher that they are describing.
he's got a lot to build on
and here’s to hoping he does. lower the walks, and everything else looks a lot better – so you’re right, control and command are huge for him. it’s nice to see such a high velocity arm closer to the majors though. and by that, I do mean physically and mentally.

Brett Tomko out for season
Oakland right-hander Brett Tomko has been sidelined for the rest of the season with nerve damage in his right arm.
Tomko told team doctors he felt something in his arm during his five-hit shutout against the Rangers in Texas on Monday. He threw 114 pitches and could not move his arm the next morning.

OT: music
So today I got a ticket for the Pavement reunion.
And earlier this week I got tickets for Elvis Costello’s TV show taping (at the Apollo Theater).
Two shows’ worth actually… The choices are Neko Case/Ron Sexsmith/Sheryl Crow or Ray LaMontaigne/Lyle Lovett/John Prine. I can’t make time for both…I lean closer to Ray LaMontaigne.
There was another show with Richard Thompson, the one musician listed that I haven’t seen before, but those were gone.
Anyway, I’m psyched.
