2009 Rangers Instructional League Roster
Here is the link for those who are interested
Not a whole lot of surprises. Lots of 2010 contract/DSL guys, which is always fun to see. Off the top of my head, the most glaring omission is Miguel De Los Santos. Makes you wonder what is going on there. The team seemed confident that he would be able to return by the end of the AZL season, and now he's not even at instructs.
If you're going to be in the Phoenix area during instructs, I highly recommend going out there. It's a lot of fun to see all of that talent on the field at one time.

Seeing that much pitching talent
in the lower minors just makes me drool. With all the graduations and guys in the upper minors it still amazes me to see that many intriguing names at the lower levels in the next couple of waves.

I was thinking the same thing T ball.
All that pitching makes me puff out my chest. However, I’m starting to get really scared about position players. It would be nice to have one or two moving aggresively through the system.

Martin...
Should we consider his Instructs innings part of this year’s total? Or are they more simulated situations, and not quite the same stress level?
I wonder about the wear on his arm, and if he needs rest.

Tim Steggall?
Sounds like an Aussie, but looks too old for a scouting find.

was this the 86-88 Throwing dude who caused such stupid consternation?
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'

I'm not sure that I am
Texas has done a terrific job with pitchers early in their Latin American initiative. They hit big (relative to the market) on their biggest investments in 2006 and 2007, Font and Perez, they’ve “hit” on Boscan and Pimentel, Castillo still looks interesting, and others have promise as well. But the three guys who they hyped the most and invested the most money in positionally before last year, Santana, Solis and Yan, can’t hit. Santana is easily the most promising offensively, but he still had a 224/275 while repeating Low A as a 20 year old. They brought over a dozen of their former LA signees to instructs, so they obviously like some of them. But Telis is really the first guy after Santana who shows much possibility of showing eye pleasing slash lines. Guys like Leury Garcia and LDLS are intriguing for their tools, not their hitting prowess, particularly as exhibited by those sorts of stats.
Anyway, unlike with pitching talent, the organization hasn’t yet shown that it has an eye for spotting hitters among the 16 year olds.

DR guys
Santana, Solis, Yan – Dominican, Dominican, Dominican
goyo has theorized about the “tryout” culture of Dominican baseball. If that is the case, I wonder if it militates against hitting on a positional guy from there.
Dominican pitching prospects seem to be doing well of course, especially the ones you mention… Maybe they are represented in tryout drills more realistically, just considering a pitch is a pitch whether to a live batter or a BP catcher.

Edwin Garcia
I believe that EasyEddie is in the same class as Telis.

At this point
whether we’re talking about Telis or E Garcia or Pimentel or Santana, the common thread is that none of their signees has had full season success yet. Hopefully a couple of these guys will turn that around soon and hopefully Profar will put up good traditional numbers, but we’re four years deep into the program, so a less than positive trend has started, at least from those earlier classes.

I don’t want to start a new post for this, but I figured I’d link the free story I wrote yesterday, which looks at the system’s catching prospects…
