Welp it's back to being the laughing stock of the league again..

the Rangers are the first AL club in 45 years to manage just one run in five games.

Thank god Murph hit that home run or it would be five straight shut-outs ugghhhh

Yeah

And even that…I don’t know. The Pirates or Royals or someone like that, as laughingstocks of the league, sure.

The Mets or Cubs, with $100+ million payrolls laying gigantic eggs? Maybe.

A team that’s been in the playoff hunt all season scoring 1 run in 5 games? Not so much.

That's rediculous AJM

The macs were the laughing stock ofthe NBA and they were in the frickin finals. A collapse of historical proportions are always laughing stock eligible.

Now, do I think the Rangers are currently a laughing stock, no. I just think your reasoning, a teams record, or pace, can prohibit a team from being a laughing stock is failed logic.

That article is dead on

The fans showed up last night, loud and supportive and got paid back by a lack of offense. It was such a power down, i felt that sad piano music should have been playing in the background as we all exited the stadium not even wanting to stay for fireworks.

Kinsler

he hasnt exactly put it that way multiple times, but he has come off with that attitude most every time ive heard him on bad radio.

When he was in boston calling in he was talking about how he liked to play there because the fans actually understood the game, etc. Which i cant disagree with just seems somewhat wrong to say.

But as I said before, I respect his candor.

Use whatever metric you want. Kinsler has had a very good season. Bitch about his approach as much as you want, but it just doesn’t take away from what he’s done in 2009. Maybe in 2010, it gets to the point where his approach prevents him from having a good season with the bat. That isn’t what is being discussed here though.

i don't think many people expect Kinsler to

be Average. He was an all-star that was playing well and did not have the swing from the fences approach

a .250 BA and .814 OPS (which is strongly skewed by his HRs, which is a main problem with his approach, he swings for the freakin fences) aren’t what I expect out of Kinsler. I’m sorry, but I expected more. Kinsler’s slugging etc were higher last year with 18 HRs vs 29 this year. He was hitting line drives, not popups.

The point of saying he’s been average at worst is that no matter how you choose to view his 2009 season, there is no way you can say he has been worse than average. In reality, he has been much better than an average 2B, but here he is treated as if he’s no better than Joaquin Arias.

I'm putting the blame on the guys who have failed

AJM’s post the other day was a good one that talked about this very thing. Take a look at this. Look at the sOPS+ which is the OPS+ for that specific split. The two positions that have been below average have been 1B and C. 1B specifically has been absolutely horrible. So that is why I “blame” those players for this team’s offensive woes.

Then there’s Hamilton who was expected to be this team’s top slugger and to be producing in the heart of the lineup. Clearly, that hasn’t happened. These 5 players have combined to drag the entire offense down.

Maybe it was my fault for being unclear in that first post, but like I just said in the post you're replying too

My statement was merely saying that no matter what statistic you choose to look at, none of them have shown Kinsler to be even a point below average offensively. The reality is that he’s been much better than just average. This was simply my response to all the posts from people here where they look at Kinsler as being horrible offensive player.

It is the best stat I can readily find with a post-ASB split.

I don’t appreciate being accused of cherry-picking stats, either. OPS and steals basically encapsulate a snapshot of the three main elements of offensive production — getting on base, hitting for power, and stealing bases.

and AJM, I understand what OPS is, maybe you’re not cherry picking, but you were being too positive for me at the moment. I like OPS, but you default to it way too much, it can be skewed by a high slugging as we saw in the case of AJ.

Coping With Depression - The blaming stage...

I guess the goodwill bandwagon fans are gone (again). That was quick.

And I feel the depression too.

Getting beat by Kasmir? Ugh. It just demonstrates why I have such strong anti-Hicks feelings this year. I look at this slumping lineup right now and realize it was vulnerable all along. We relied too much on hopeful, cheap solutions – Andruw Jones, Murphy, et al. Our bargains worked for awhile, but we never addressed them correctly.

Using Blalock was strictly about money. Meanwhile, our pitching staff was awesome in 2009! In fact, our pitching we probably never be this cheap again. Back in the day, we traded Danks at a time when people thought we were “close.” And yet, this year we were close and no deals? I can’t blame JD. I can blame an owner who loves to brag about his soccer investment – as Arlington burns. Honestly, I can’t blame the players – like so many wish to do – this team hustled all year. It was a great year. One of my favorites.

Next Years Free Agents?

Is it too soon to talk about free agents for next season?

Do we want Figgins at 3rd, then move M-Y to DH? That would be a base stealing, uber-defensive club.

Too soon?

by 3Bagger on Sep 19, 2009 10:14 AM CDT reply actions

You have to have $$ to sign free agents.......

Yes, Padilla and Blalock are both off the books for 2010, but guys like CJ and Kinsler and others will be due for raises next year.

Much like last winter, no big free agents will be added to this roster.

Depends on how you define "this team"

I spent about $700 on tickets this year.

I bought a hat at one of the games, when I couldn’t find my other hat, and it cost about $30.

I probably spent about $100 on food and drinks and what not up there.

So, $800-850 this season.

Oh, and parking, that was $64 for the 8 games I paid for from the guy with season tickets who I get tickets from each year, plus $8 for Newberg Night. So that’s $72.

So somewhere in the neighborhood of $900.

I’m sure quite a few folks have spent more than me, but it isn’t like I spent an insubstantial amount.

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 19, 2009 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I probably spent a little bit more than that.

I also don’t make nearly the money you do

i probably shouldn’t attempt to quantify my disappointment, after all it was me who spent the money.

But I can tell you that my level of disappointment with this ballclub is certainly right up there with the players.

It’s too bad I’m not playing with them. I would have stopped trying to sit on my back leg and jack the shit out of the ball at every AB months ago

Remember, everyone here (not all fans, just everyone here) are DIE HARD Rangers fans. We do it for love, not money. We will always love the Rangers and only the Rangers. For some (not all) of the player, this is a job that they are paid for, and the Rangers are just the current employer in a long line of employers. On the flip side, I’m sure some of the players care as much or more than we do.

Now they have to try and keep from finishing 3rd since the Mariners are hot and seem to be finishing strong, the playoffs are over, how about just trying to win a few freakin games to finish up like men rather than crying wimps, they need to have some pride, get mad and finish this thing strong, if they do that at least they can hold their heads high into the off season.

I generally don't care too much who is offended

Now, that being said, I probably temper my comments a lot more, now that there are 25K hits per day, than I did on the blogspot blog when 100 hits was a banner day for me.

I don’t go out of my way to offend people, and I’m aware that folks in the media and within the organization read LSB.

That said, I also don’t get any perks from the club, or any particular access, so to the extent I temper my comments, it is out of a sense of propriety and just trying to be civil.

It's pretty hard...

to take a step back and realize that this season has been a huge success when the last week has been so tough.

I’m pretty pumped up for 2010. That said, there are some big changes that need to be made and little to no $ to do it with. My suggestions :

1) Let Rudy walk

2) Deal Millwood – I realize many here may think he has no value. However a guy who will have pitched close to 200 innings by the end of the year with and ERA around 4 does have some value. It will have to be a bad contract for bad contract type deal. Like the one for Board Game that many here have suggested. The Rangers have plenty of options for the rotation next year and don’t need Millwood to be one of them imo.

3) Bring in at least one high OBP type guy. Not sure the Rangers have the $ for a guy like Bobby Abreu, Nick Johnson, or Jermaine Dye though. Again, Board Game could be an option if the Cubs will eat that salary too. It all comes down to cost.

4) Bring in another catcher or bring back Pudge, he may not have much left, but he can’t be worse than what the Rangers have got offensively from that position this year and he will bring in some fans.

5) Of course the obvious make a run at Ben Sheets fits in here somewhere.

6) Find another lefty for the ‘pen besides BGL. I can’t stomach another year of Eddie.

7) Most importantly, someone in this organization needs to get through to the players currently on the team and those that will be back next season that their approach at the plate has to change. If this doesn’t happen I fear the Rangers will be in the same position next year as they are right now.

Pretty much agree, SLC.

For the rest of the year, RW needs to roll with:
CF Borbon
SS the King
2b the Hardhead
RF Cruz
LF Byrd
DH Murphy
3b German(and Omar)
1b Davis
Catcher
If Murphy is in the field, one of the others is the dh. Roll with it and see what they do when they aren’t being juggled all the time.

Board Game

I relish the thought that we could get him back. Last year that dude showed the best approach at the plate of any ranger I have ever seen. He took outs personally and every at-bat was a battle. I would love to see him back and I don’t care if he is kindof crazy and doesn’t believe in dinosaurs.

by Whiskey in my Whiskey on Sep 19, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I would have to think...

that the Cubs will do pretty much anything at this point to get rid of him. Deal Millwood for Board Game straight up (including contracts).

That means the Cubs only eat 8 mil to get rid of a guy who can’t stay in the OF and has caused some controversy with the team. Plus they get a quality #3/4 starter (especially in the NL) in return. In fact, now that I think about it, I may even ask for a prospect in return on top of Board Game if I’m JD.

I'd love to see it happen

one-for-one, they pay the 8 mil difference. You get your big-time dh for 6 mil per year(if I remember the numbers correctly). A bargain after paying Hank 6 mil this year.

I think Millwood has some value

Just blame his second half drop off on the oppressive heat in Texas. You can probably find some team that plays in a cooler climate or in a dome to trade something of value for him. If you extrapolate his 1st half numbers into a whole year, he is a top 10 pitcher in the league.

This season's failure is summed up as

JUNE SWOON and SEPTEMBER SLUMP

Those two months, involving some of the worst Ranger offense in our history, leave a sour taste that can sully an otherwise very successful season. I really enjoyed most of this season, even through the frustrating lineups and approach at the plate, and I look forward to them being competitive for years to come. However, This offseason is critical. We cannot have the same approach at the plate next year, which likely means Rudy has to go. I honestly think we need to add a bat, possibly an Abreu or Dye as our DH. Trade Murphy, let Byrd walk. We can’t have them in the middle of the order any longer, and if they are here next year, most likely that is where Wash will put them.
