I also said last night...
That as soon as Hamilton hit the second HR, that his night alone would propel us all the way to the playoffs. That looked exactly like the spark the club needed to begin a nice run of wins and to boost them back into serious contention.
If he is truly back, and provides that power force in the middle of the lineup, we’re going to the playoffs, baby.
"Either we need to re-calibrate our rectangle, or Alfonzo Marquez is not having a good night." - Josh Lewin
Agreed, but the teasip does make a point
If that ignites Hammy’s power stroke, then watch out. That’s the thing we DESPERATELY need. Not only to have him jacking homers, but to have the guys in front of him knowing they just need to get on base and he’ll take care of the rest, circa 2008.

Richie Whitt at the Observer - on Feliz
Apparently spoke with Feliz after today’s outing through the team’s Spanish translator.
He now has a scoreless streak of 17.1 innings going and for the season has allowed one run in 19.2. Most mind-boggling: 26 strikeouts, 1 walk. He’s like a 15-year-old throwing against 9-year-olds. “I can hit 100 whenever I want,” Feliz said. “But I can get people out with more than just the fastball.”

That crossed my mind the other night when he was hitting 92-93 on the fastball and owning them with the curve
Josh and Tom acted as if he just didn’t have the big heat that night, but I wondered if he had intentionally dialed down the fastball, either on Maddux’s direction or his own accord, to try new ways to get batters out. Sounds like it might have been the latter.
He’s no Danny Cabrera/Joel Zumaya. Feliz can THROW real hard but he also knows how to PITCH and it appears he also knows how to play mind games with the hitters to boot.

I've heard TAG mention it before

I've heard them mention it too, but other times...
…Feliz has been in the game with a “slow” fastball and they mention the lower velocity but don’t mention the possibility that the gun is slow.
I have no objection to man walking on the moon.
The Rangers' gun is consistenly slow
Take yesterday’s velocities for Long Name and Tallet. The FB readings starting from the 1st inning were 2-4mph off of their season averages.

Can't say I'd mind it, but I also wouldn't mind Longoria'ing him a bit.
Use the first bit of the season to stretch him out a bit in OKC while throwing our 5th starter types against the wall and seeing what we might be able to get out of guys like Hunter, McCarthy, Harrison and maybe Nipples.
Assuming we could keep him down long enough it’d Longoria him while also serving as a way to limit his overall innings a bit while we wait.
But I’d be pretty psyched to see him earn a rotation spot out of ST.

these are my thoughts exactly
Stretch him out a bit in OKC before bringing him up, keep his innings down, give yourself some roster flexibility with the out of options guys, delay his service time a bit, and then turn him loose. Lots of benefits to keeping him down briefly to start the year.
OTOH, if he’s lights out in spring training there just may be no justification. If he is pitching like this in Arizona, he comes to Arlington with the team.

Why do people hate Youk so much?
I don’t get any vibe that he’s a douche. And keep in mind, when I meet people I always hate them until they convince me otherwise. Maybe the helmet toss and getting taken down by Porcello but that’s all I got.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
I just hate his batting stance
I swear, it looks like he would love nothing more than to go to Federal Pound Me In The Ass Prison.

Douche
My initial suspicion of douche occurred when I saw his batting stance. As the camera showed a close-up on his face, I suspected there was more or less a 75% of douche. When he threw his helmet at a pitcher he charged (who he should have had no problem with) AND lost the fight, my suspicions were confirmed. 100%, unadulterated douche
He tries to have a tough demeanor, but then he wears that big giant elbow pad
which is pretty weak in my book. The helmet throwing sealed the deal.
his consistent bitch fits
on called third strikes when his team is up by about 10 runs tells me all i need to know about him

OT: 1986
So i was talking to my dad about this last night. I was telling him this was the most excited the DFW metroplex has been about the future of the Rangers my whole life (dating back to 1982). He said most likely but with one exception, 1986. Now obviously I dont really remember that season but I am familiar with the stats. So the biggest question is, what the hell happpened?!?!
In 1986 we had O’Brien (28), Slaught (27), Fletcher (27), Buechele (24), Inky (22), Oddibe (23), Sierra (20), Correa (20), Witt (22), Guzman (23), Willimans (21), Russell (24), and Kevin Brown (21). Did Bobby V and the rest of the Rangers FO and developmental staff just misuse those guys? Not develop them? Injuries? I mean crap
08/03/2009 A day that will live in infamy for the rest of the AL West.
well
Correa, Witt, Guzman: Overuse fail.
Oddibe, Sierra, Inky: Mega-outfield fail – all big disappointments in their own way.
O’Brien, Scooter, Booo: Had decent careers for who they were.
Williams, Russell, Brown: Had decent to very good careers
Really, I blame Bobby V for the pitchers: if Correa and Witt had become what they should have, that’d have been an awesome team. And I have no explanation for “better college prospect than Barry Bonds” Oddibe and “should have been the next Roberto” Sierra.
Go Rice Owls!
Yeah Correa
throwing 200 innings at age 20 seems a bit excessive. Another tremendous what if in Rangers history

TAG says bulking up "read steroids" was Sierra's downfall.
"We have a better chance to win with other guys in the lineup," said Blalock, who is hitting .190 the past 30 games. "That’s something I’ve got to deal with."
1986
Oddibe (who I thought was going to be Joe Morgan as a CF) and Inky didn’t progress. They looked like future major league stars as rookies.
Correa & Guzman both used to pitch lots of winter ball and got hurt.
Witt didn’t develop for a long, long time.
Jerry Brown – not that good, buddy.
Williams, Russell & Mahorcic framed a really good bully and had decent careers.
O’Brien was a fairly mediocre player who had one of his best years in ’86.
Boo was a really spare player (great defender) and started to regress big time v RH pitching.
LP got old and so did Charlie Hough.
They had some really bad drafts in the early ’80s (remember Kunkel?) as well although they were picking so low.
We also had incredibly shitty ownership at the time. Eddie Chiles couldn’t put any money into the team so when free agents became available, we had to sit there with our thumbs up our asses (sound familiar?).
Bobby V was really good for This Thing in ’85 thru about ’89-90 but stayed at the fair too long.

Kevin Brown
didn’t get here until ’89 or begin to really blossom until ’91-92.
He was a nut-job and got in a big fight with Schieffer which hastened his departure.
Supposedly when he was at the Players Union meeting (1994ish?) he got in an argument with some of the brass and said something along the lines of “My IQ is higher than anybody’s in the room”
Somebody chirped up, “So is your ERA” and the room broke up laughing as Brown fumed.

Yeah, Brown was just kicking around his first few years but found it in '92 (21 wins).
What will really drive you nuts is when you realize what this team had in ’89.
A pitching staff of the following 200-300+ winners: Brown, Rogers, Moyer, Hough, Ryan with a pretty good closer in Russell.
Oddibe was gone and we knew Inky was going to be a bag of suck by this time but Ruben was getting better & better (should have won ’89 MVP) and they had just acquired Raffy & Julio.
Coming up were Pudge, Juando and The Sosa.
5 200+ winners on the staff. 1600ish HR’s in The Show between Raffy, The Sosa and Juando plus The Keeper of The Big Gold (Julio) and the best catcher of this generation all on the same team. At the very end of his career when he had nothing left, Buddy Bell (2500 hits or so?) came back to this team as well.
That is one of the very best teams in terms of eventual talent that one organization has ever had but most of these players were hurt, too old or too young- fucking ridiculous amount of talent all together in the same organization.
Oh yeah, they could have taken Frank Thomas in the 1990 draft but opted for Donald Harris instead.
.

Yeah, last year's campaign was hilarious and cool, this year it's just annoying
It’s also aggravating because the campaign sells the Rangers game experience as some sort of leisurely family outing where everyone eats ice cream, relaxes, and just has carefree fun. A baseball game is a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings, not a Sunday picnic.
I know the campaign is not targeted at people like me, but how can we train the next generation to become diehards if we tell him baseball is relaxing, carefree fun?

I don't have anything against the Christian concerts
I’m more a fan of country/gospel/bluegrass Christian than I am contemporary, but I don’t understand having them 1 hour before game time. You just ensure that all the people attending the concert are going to straggle in right as the game starts, if not after the first pitch.
I’d be a terrible baseball marketing exec, especially in a market like D-FW. I’d ignore attracting casual fans in an effort to appeal to the hardcore types like myself. Now, I could probably market for a team like the Red Sox.

I agree with that
but if Hicks continues to have trouble selling the team, the purse strings could tighten up.

Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Purke said
what it would take to sign him before the pick. I’m not sure how it is on Purke.
"I don't condone steroids or any other type of growth hormones or anything else, but I could care less, and, for the most part, I don't think the fans give a (bleep). The people that care about it are the people that probably don't like baseball," - Jim Leyland
The fact he didn't budge off his demands puts alot of it on his shoulders
Boras stated it would take 50 million to sign Strasburg before the draft and he signed for 15 mil. Everyone states it will take a certain amount and the negotiations go down from there.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Every player says things before the draft
Rational thinking and draft history suggests that pre-draft asking prices are subject to negotiation. It’s not exactly the norm for a player and his family to ask for a huge price pre-draft and then believe the concept of negotiation to be “here’s our price, when you want to pay it let us know.”
Purke took somewhat of a hard line stance before the draft, but so do lots of players. His stance wasn’t such that it set off tons of alarms that the asking price was non-negotiable.

Omar's been the consummate team player...
…and I love the dude, but I’m not real optimistic about his success at third.

Looked good for the short time being last night.
The only difference is you get an upgrade with the glove and a downgrade with the bat.
Well
I’m not sure that I wouldn’t just as soon have his bat in there as Blalock. And the defense should be a little better than Davis at 3B, Blalock at 1B.
