Wednesday Quick Facts and Trivia

I was waiting for the morning post, to make a comment with some facts and trivia, but I'm bored at work and want to get this out there.

Interesting Facts:

The New York Yankees, with the best record in all of baseball, only have a losing record against 2 AL teams: The Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Angels.  The two teams the Rangers could have used the Yankees help with the most!

The Texas Rangers are tied with the Boston Red Sox with the second toughest schedule so far this year, based on ESPN.com's Strength of Schedule calculations.  The Yankees and the Angels are tied for the 8th most difficult schedule (also tied with the Padres).

The Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays are all tied with the most games played against a starting LHPin the AL.  This equates to those three teams being on the bottom of the list of AL teams with games played against starting RHP.

Trivia:

1) The Texas Rangers have a losing record against 4 teams in the AL.  Name the 4 teams.

2) Take a stab at which team has the number 1 toughest schedule so far this year, based on the Strength of Schedule stat.  Think about teams that play a lot of games against difficult opponents, I guess.

3) Of the three teams that have played the most games against starting LHP in the AL, one has a losing record, one is at .500, and the other has a winning record.  Which teams fall into those categories?

4) And also, what is the Texas Rangers record in games against a starting LHP?

BONUS: The Rangers played 52 games against starting LHP in 2008.  What was the Rangers record in games against a starting LHP in that season?

I guess there is some confusion....

on 4 and the bonus question.
For 4, I did not say how many games we’ve played.
The bonus question is about the 2008 record, in which we played 52 games.

my guesses

1) Twins, Tigers, Yankees, Blue Jays
2) It would have to be one of the AL East teams, so I’ll guess Toronto
3)Rangers as losing, KC at .500 and Tampa at winning
4) 24-28?

Answers...

1) 4 teams the Rangers have a losing record against:
Detroit (2-7)
Minnesota (4-6)
New York Yankees (4-5)
Toronto (4-5)
WINNER: studcrackers & hinduplaya
A lot of people said Tampa Bay, but you’re forgetting that the Rangers swept them in Texas in July.

2) Team with the toughest SOS:
Oakland Athletics according to ESPN.com
WINNER: Me, for stumping everyone?
No one got this, but Baltimore certainly seems like a pretty solid guess. They’re actually ranked 6th, but there really isn’t much variance in that statistic, so it’s not that interesting to me in the end. I guess if you look at Oakland, they play 3 teams in their division that are all above .500, so that may be pushing their SOS up.

3) Team records in games vs. starting LHP:
+.500 = Texas Rangers (28-22)
.500 = Tampa Bay Rays (25-25)
-.500 = Kansas City Royals (16-34)
WINNER: Me again?
This question was really why I wanted to do a trivia post at all, because I was pretty shocked. The other questions were kind of lame, but this one was interesting. Texas always seems to struggle against left-handed starters, but evidently they’re winning games. Pretty close winning percentage against LHP or RHP this year… .5609 against RHP and .560 against LHP, so up to this point, it really doesn’t matter what the handedness of the starting pitcher is. Of course, last nights 2 wins really helped that LHP winning percentage. Pretty surprised that some of you said Kansas City was the +.500 team, maybe you thought I was trying to throw you off?

4) Rangers record against starting LHP this year.
This was obviously answered in the last question… 28-22.
WINNER: The closest were blueballlefty and SMITTY with 26-26.

BONUS) Rangers record against starting LHP in 2008.
21-31
Anyone that made a clear guess at the Bonus question answered with a winning record, which was very surprising too. I guess we had a more balanced lineup last year and that was part of the thought process?

Thanks for playing.
