I was wrong...
Saw this over at Minorleagueball.com (awesome site run by John Sickels) and thought I would rob the idea a bit with a Rangers twist. Seems like this would be fun to do on a morning after a big DH sweep and AJM being unavailable.
Premise: In the comment section write a few predictions or opinions you had that were dead wrong. A lot of posters here (myself included) like to point out everytime they are right but sometimes dont readily admit when they were flat wrong. Ill go first of course (and yes some of these I can still be correct on but the probability has decreased a great deal):
1. I thought the Rangers would only win 83 games (knock on wood).
2. I thought it would only take 86-88 wins to take the AL West title.
3. I was on board with dealing Feliz (but not including Smoak, Perez, of Holland), and other parts to the Blue Jays for Halladay
4. I was wrong about Blake Beavan. I thought his FB would come back in full force this yr and his K rate would increase
5. I thought Chris Davis was going to hit around 40 HRs this yr.
6. I thought Hank Blalock was still alive.
7. I thought Taylor Teagarden would wrest the starting job from Salty via merit not injury
8. I thought that IF the Rangers were still in the playoff hunt in September it would be because Kinsler is having an MVP caliber yr and not MY.
9. Lastly, I thought if we were in the race this late it would be because of our juggernaut offense not our pitching and defense.
What were you wrong about? Some of the same as me? Different ones?

I was wrong
I thought Max would hit this year.
I thought Smoak would juggernaut through the minors, whatever level.

1, 2, 8 and 9
I was wrong.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Everyone was always saying the West could be won with less than 90 games
That is the one thing that I was arguing from the start; that the winner of the West would have more than 90 wins. Simply put, the West was never as bad as people kept insisting from the beginning of the season. Even in July, people were saying that the Wild Card was 99% likely to come from the East because their fancy pre-season predictions didn’t allow a west team to actually be competitive.
Of course, I thought the Rangers had no chance at that, so I’m still an idiot.
Go Rice Owls!
You're missing the point of the game.

(1) I thought the Rangers would win 78 games.
(2) I was on board with dealing Holland and Perez but not two of Holland, Smoak, Feliz.
(3) I thought it was a year early to bring up Elvis, and the defense would only be marginally improved by the move.
(4) I thought Chris Davis would hit 40 HR.
(5) I thought Michael Main would surpass Feliz as the top pitching prospect.
(6) I thought Michael Young’s best year already occurred.
(7) I thought Nelson Cruz would be an All Star. Oh wait.

The only predictions I remember
(1) I predicted the Rangers to win 81 to 84 games *
(2) I predicted Elvis would start the year at OKC and that Omar would start for the big club
(3) I agreed with many of the projections that said Hamilton and Kinsler would regress **
(4) I claimed Nelson Cruz would be plagued by injuries
(5) I thought the Rangers would deal one of the catchers at the deadline
A few come to mind
1. I thought Face was going to be meh
2. I thought Millwood would win 16 games (he’s kinda pitched like that)
3. I thought 86 wins would win the West.
4. I thought the Angels offense wouldn’t be productive.
5 off the top of my head.
1) I thought the team would win around 79-80.
2) I thought the defense would be only marginally better.
3) I thought Andrus would have lots more rookie errors.
4) I thought 86 would win the west.
5) I thought MY had peaked at age 28

Mine are pretty close to that
I also wasn’t prepared for the struggles of any of Davis, Hamilton or Kinsler.
As a result of your #2, I didn’t think that the team ERA would be in the same galaxy as where it is. I thought it would likely be around five again.

Yeah,
I never in my wildest dreams thought we would be 2nd in the AL in Runs allowed per game. That is just an inconceivable thought to a Ranger fan.

i was in the same boat.
i never thought feldman would turn into the type of pitcher that he has. I just didnt think he had it in him. now, after being proven wrong by the guy as many times as possible over a couple seasons, i think he has unreal upside and the potential to be a solid #2 for a long time.
the key with both he and hunter’s dev has been their abilities to learn and develop new pitches and for the pitching staff to treat each pitcher differently and actually teach these guys who can learn and handle it, new pitches, and not with a cookie cutter approach either. the results have been phenomenal.
I can't help it. I’m an asshole.

A little wrong on a lot of things
- the biggest being I thought Padilla would lead the staff in wins, innings, ERA+ and have his best year since he was selected an NL AllStar. Oh boy.
- expected Young to do pretty well, but not at the level he has produced (but not surprised about the power uptick)
- expected Kinsler and Hamilton to both be more consistent, with Kinsler getting on base more and Hammy producing more power.
- expected Brandon Boggs to step up and partially shelve Murphy and Byrd (part of expecting Byrd to K a lot and generally suck at the plate)
There are probably more assumptions that went off track, but those above push my ability to guess right down to around breakeven for 2009.

Agreed on Padilla
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
I was right and wrong
1. I thought they’d win 87 but not enough to win the West.
2. The starters have outperformed my expectations.
3. I thought Davis would mash (drafted him in FMLB).
4. When Davis went down I got Blalock on my team. Thought he would mash.
5. I had no idea Elvis would hit this well.
6. I figured between Salty and Tea we’d be set at C.
7. Hammy has underperformed.
8. I never thought we’d see Derek starting and Perez up this early (figured last month or so).
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
I assume you mean Feliz in #8
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Just in case you need some help selecting one to pick
I’ve made a short list for you:
1) Rangers are on the treadmill of mediocrity
2) Billy Beane is a baseball god
3) The Rangers play in the #5 media market, there is no excuse for having a cheap payroll
4) Hicks is cheap
5) Hicks is an idiot
6) JD is a idiotic child who shouldn’t be the GM
7) Hicks is an idiot for hiring a cheap donut boy to run this team
8 ) JD took a team (2004) that JUST MISSED the playoffs and turned it into a steaming pile of excrement
9) JD wasted the core of this team (Teix, Young, Soriano/Kins, Blalock) that JUST missed the playoffs in 2004. He then sent them into #1 b/c #4, while #3
10) JD traded a future HOF 1B in his prime, no good organization does this (except for the A’s, and remember #2)
11) #10 for a handful of MAGIC BEANS
12) Other GM’s know they can take JD behind the woodshed when it comes time to trade. Chiris Young/AGon, John Danks, and dont forget #10
13) There was no ‘plan’
14) There was no ‘plan’ before Nolan showed up
15) JD is Nolan’s waterboy/donutboy
16) He can’s see “this thing” losing less than 90 games
17) ppl here are more worrie about our BA ranking than our win/loss record
18) the LF Side of the IF will be a bleeping disaster
19) Cruz will never make it — no player in the history of the major leagues has ever followed his track and been successful
20) Elvis is overmatched
21) “Johnny Donuts”
22)And dont forget a board favorite: “The advanced reading of Bill James are not for everyone”
Jeeez, the players JD picked up in the Tex trade have barely made any kind of meaningful contributions to the Rangers in The Show, but the pro-JD crowd is still running around shouting "I told ya so."
I was wrong about MY's offense...
…I thought he would continue to regress in OBP and would hit a pretty punchless .300. His power boost has been a pleasant surprise.
I also didn’t expect the team to be in contention quite this late in the season. I was firmly on the “improve in ’09 contend in ’10” bandwagon.
These two things have combined to make me think something I never would have believed in March: I’m devastated by MY getting hurt on Sept. 1.
I have no objection to man walking on the moon.
I was wrong
I didn’t think Kinsler would be this good.

Here goes
I thought Derek Holland would break out two years ago
I thought Braden Tullis was the steal of our draft
I thought it was a bad idea to trade Feliz
I thought I would get a job with the Rangers this year.
Hey 3 out of 4 ain’t bad.
Charter member of the Dutch bandwagon
Let's see, I thought
1. Rangers would win only around 83 games or so
2. 90 Wins was going to win the West
3. Padilla was going to be the best pitcher on the staff
4. Young was just barely going to improve on last year’s numbers
5. Davis was going to hit 35+ HR this year… BA would be a bit low like .255ish and his OBP wouldn’t be that great but his power would more than make up for it
6. Blalock was going to continue his whole play good when healthy and get our hopes up then get injured that he seems to do yearly, rather than become a flesh eating zombie
7. Juan Cruz would’ve been a great addition to the bullpen
8. Hamilton was going to put up similar numbers to last year
9. Feldman was going to come back to Earth and at best be an ok option at #5 (I still fully approved of him being in the rotation at the beginning of the year though)
10 Salty was going to step it up and make catching set for a long time
Well Let's See
1. I expected a Hamilton regression. Not sure why, but I did. However I didn’t expect this.
2. I thought Mike Young was in decline.
3. I’m not sure I thought about how many homers Chris Davis would hit, but I never would have dreamed his season would have gone this awry.
4. I didn’t expect Andrus to be this good.
5. I thought Millwood was done.
6. I thought Feldman would be good, but not THIS fucking good.
7. I thought the defense would be better, but again, not THIS fucking good.
8. I did not like the lineup going into the year never would have figured them for being this bad. Or mediocre. Whatever they are.
9. Assumed Kinsler would be the star of this team.
10. Thought both catchers would hit and that Teagarden would especially surprise.
11. Assumed Mike Young would be a better defensive 3B.
Everybody knows better defense will save runs, but nobody thought the Rangers could pull of something like they have. Nobody could have thought that. Pitchers get credit, too, of course…it’s been a remarkable turn around.
I was wrong about pretty much all the same points as you, except for Teagarden
1- I predicted 81-81 for the season. Looks like we should be better than that.
2- Same.
3- Yeah, Feliz was the only one of the big four I was willing to give up as well. WRONG.
4- I was still skeptical about Beavan, but I didn’t think he’d lose the ability to miss bats entirely.
5- Don’t remember what my preseason predictions where for CD, but I wasn’t expecting him to look useless for the first half.
6- Hank used to be one of my favorite players. Didn’t take long for him to fall from grace.
7- I kind of expected Teagarden to suck, but I didn’t expect Salty to turn into a Jason Botts redux with a gimp arm.
8- I was fairly sure MY would continue his downturn this year and we’d be stuck without any production for his horrid contract. The contract is still horrible, but at least we’re getting some bang for our considerable amount of buck.
9- I expected the defense to have a big impact, but I didn’t expect it to be this huge. I expected us to be kind of mediocre in our run prevention (instead of horrible like last year), and that would help our potent offensive attack win more games. Nooope.
10- I thought Feldman was just a back end scrub who we’d use and throw away when better options came along. He’s still overrated by most of his fans, but he’s turned into a nice mid-rotation piece.
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock
1) 82 wins
2) 86 would win the west
3) Expected Davis at 1b, not Broussard
4) Thought our pitching could win the west this year b/c of Padilla
5) Would never have guessed the pitching we have after using 10 starters
6) Hammy and Kins ughh
Jeeez, the players JD picked up in the Tex trade have barely made any kind of meaningful contributions to the Rangers in The Show, but the pro-JD crowd is still running around shouting "I told ya so."
Those that know me know the main one:
I facetiously forecasted Julio Borbon’s future as “assistant peep show janitor.” While part of it was a bit for me, I really didn’t see this coming.
I thought Cruz was going to be a little disappointing, maybe an 780-800 OPS.
The funny thing is, the last 2 years I’ve been calling for a MY resurgence, this year I said no mas.
