Kirkman and Phillips
We’re probably going to have to add those guys if we don’t want to lose them this winter. I’m a little on the wire about Phillips because of the walk totals, but he has had a pretty darn good year at two levels.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Yep
Both should be protected

Eh, don't know about Phillips
Kirkman is a consideration for me though.

A lefty reliever who strikes out a guy and inning
And has had an ERA under 2 in both the Cal league and Texas league this year.
I could definitely see a team taking a flyer on him. Everybody talks about Kiker as a LOOGY type but Phillips is already in that position. I could see him helping us out as early as next summer.

You’re glazing over a 25:18 K:BB, but I guess it’s possible. He is a lefty. You guys are looking to protect too many fringy guys on the 40 imo, though.

Yeah the walks are a concern
But last year he had a 4.5/9 rate in Bakersfield and then came back this year and cut that in half. Then it jumped back up once he got the bump to Frisco.
As it stands right now we’ll have 20 pitchers on the 40 man roster this winter so we would have room for a few more. Kirkman and Phillips fill that role nicely

Phillips
I’d like to keep him, but he seems like a safe not to get taken.

yeah, his ceiling is a LOOGY
and he needs a full year at AA/AAA before he’d be ready. If somebody picked him up, chances are that he’d be back before the season was over.

I don't think he'd need a full season
Id say if he kept up his pace from this year he could be a viable option come ASB next year. With CJ being a late inning guy we are either gonna have to go out and sign someone as the 2nd lefty in the pen or go with AJ Murray.

we agree that he won't be ready to be a ML reliever at the beginning of the season
So there is no need to put him on the 40 until he is ready to be a ML reliever.

But he could be a ML reliever for
San Diego, KC, etc.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
well, I don't think he would be very good for them next year
And I wouldn’t lose any sleep over losing him.
I think our roster is getting to the point that there isn’t much reason to have a guy that might be able to contribute 40 innings in a year or two. LOOGY is one of the least valuable pieces on the team, and I’m not going to sweat losing a backup, potential LOOGY.

Then you are gonna lose alot of players if thats your philosophy
In the next couple years we are gonna have to make decisions on alot of guys who won’t be ML ready the upcoming April. Not everyone on the 40 man roster is a viable ML option. Omar Poveda has been on the 40 man roster all year with zero chance he got called up. Its because the likelihood he will be ML ready in a couple years was high last winter when we added him. Phillips fits that mold. And this winter we have some room to keep guys like him who aren’t top prospects but good anyway. Next winter I don’t think we would be able to keep him but this winter we can and should.

there is a difference
between a starter prospect that isn’t ready for ML, and a LOOGY prospect that isn’t ready for ML.
"You can probably stick a fork in the Rangers' playoff chances for 2009." - AJM on 7/26 with the team 4.5 games out
Yeah
But that starter prospect was a year and a half away and the LOOGY prospect is probably half a season away from being ML ready. I just think this winter we have the room to give Phillips a spot and should because hes an intruiging arm. Next year we probably won’t have room to keep guys like Phillips because we’ll have so many high ceiling guys we want to protect. If Phillips has a shitty year next year he can be easily jettisoned for someone better but his talent is too good right now to lose for nothing when we have space for him.

Hes been really good his last 7 starts
He is the type of player we will most likely either lose in rule 5 or trade away over the next couple seasons which is a good and bad thing. Good because that means we have alot of talent to make him expendable. But bad because he will most likely be a nice pitcher for someone and we will hear people bitch about us giving away pitchers.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I'm in the minority and this would be an interesting poll
but if you put a gun to my head and asked me to pick which one to trade I’d move Beavan before I’d trade Gomez. As good as some of these guys may turn out to be I’d be more than willing to let go Beavan, and Kiker before moving Kirkman or Gomez.
Anyone else want to weigh in with their opinion on that?
I don’t think that either thought is out of line.

well that makes me feel like
my spidey senses and just general feel (stats, scouting reports) isn’t out of line. What do you think of Ballard these days? He and Trevor Hurley are attempting to pique my interest.
Id get rid of Kirkman before I got rid of Kiker but I agree about Beavan over Gomez

Looks like a playa. Me likey.
Velazquez just butchered a flyball allowing the go-ahead run to score.
this only sorta counts as minor league talk
but is the NL really AAAA? It is funny to call it that, but after seeing what Brad Penny did to the Phillies tonight, I am actually starting to believe it. The Red Sox have to love watching Smoltz and Penny go to the NL and simply dominate (and Padilla is in that conversation). I would not be comfortable with the idea of any NL pitcher coming to the Rangers without adjusting his ERA up at least 1 full run, and if he pitches in the NL West, probably more.
