Monday morning Rangers stuff
Jeff Wilson's game story notes that the loss yesterday capped off a terrible homestand, in which the Rangers went 2-7 with the season on the line.
Kevin Millwood is ready to get back out on the mound and pitch again.
Michael Young aggravated his hamstring by playing on Tuesday, keeping him out of the lineup longer, but he says he did the right thing in trying to come back.
And Ray Buck writes about the Ranger TV broadcast combo of Josh Lewin and Tom Grieve.

It looked like he was getting a bit squeezed yesterday
and the Angels definitely had the strategy of not swinging at anything he threw, it seemed like.

Nah
I’m amazed he hasn’t had more bouts with control problems thus far for someone his age with his minor league track record. Like Holland’s recent performances, not as fun to watch, but not nearly enough to make me concerned about the long term.

I'm a little more worried...
about seeing him throw 91-93 mph in a lot of his outings. Although it does seem like he can tune it up a little when he wants to.
From the walks I’ve seen he isn’t missing by much.

Nope
Given his control problems throughout his minor league career, the fact that he’s not been perfect in in the majors is not suprising. Also, considering he throws so hard and his fastball moves so much, its not too surprising he’d have some control issues. What’s good to see is that he’s still fooling guys. I saw one angel try and swing at a head high Feliz heater and just get blown away by it.
What concerns me (about both feliz and Holland) is their Homer rates. Neither one gave up many home runs in the minors, and in particular Feliz threw alot more ground balls than fly balls. So far in the majors he’s been allowing alot of fly balls and now 2 homers a double and a triple. Feliz’ minor league numbers are 7 homers allowed in 276 minor league innings.

A lot of rooks seem to have their HR rates jump dramatically in the majors
Chris Volstad, Max Scherzer, Trevor Cahill, Chris Tillman and Brett Cecil are some pretty good guys who’ve had that happen to them this year too. I wouldn’t imagine it’s something to get overly worked up about.

the same team was working the booth last year and for half a decade before that. the cause of that spike has to be a variable that has been altered over that span, aka the team’s performance.

Wash on Hank F
With the Rangers slated to face three more RH’s, Wash says Blalock will stay in the line-up.
“He might play against everybody,” Wash said, ‘but I know he’s going to face those righties."
Wash also said on Saturday night on the pre-game show that the reason Hank F was starting was because he felt the line-up “needed a veteran presence.”
What the hell is going on behind the scenes with these dipshits?
Also, credit Chris Davis with a 5 for 27 (.185) and one walk (.214 obp) on the homestand. Three of those “hits” included the wet newspaper flop shot to LF off Kazmir and two infield hits that were completely bungled by Aybar. A decent SS makes both of those plays.

No mention of Kinsler’s .172/.242/.241 homestand. With 0 runs scored and 1 RBI!

My bad on the math...
Chris Davis was 6 for 29 (.207) with two walks (.258 obp). Within those numbers were three incredibly weak hits referenced above.
When his ass was shipped to OKC in July, he was hitting .202 with an obp of .256.
What he did over the homestand is what he has done all season – suck.

And Chris Davis since coming back
is 22 for 87 (.253) which on the surface looks like a major improvement of the .202 he had before getting sent down. The OBP since coming back sits at .287.
Does anybody with a baseball brain who has been following this team closely read those numbers as true improvement?
Within those 22 hits are the three joke hits over the weekend, a well placed squibber at NYC that a 35 year old Jeter could still get in front of, an easy play that Asdrubal Cabrera messed up plus the two “hits” that Overbay F’d up on September 1.
On top of that, he has 5 walks in 94 plate appearances.
When somebody like Chris Davis has more infield hits (6) than walks (5) over a month, that’s not a good sign for his future.
Let Davis keep the wet newspaper duck snort flop shot he had v. Kazmir on Friday…If you wipe away those 6 ab’s where Davis had infield hits he’s at 16 for 81 (.198) and he would have been on base 21 out of 89 plate appearances (.236 obp).
The numbers of Chris Davis in the second half are being artificially propped up by those 6 bullshit infield hits.
He’s essentially the same player that was sent back to OKC (without the strikeouts) in July and his every day presence in the line-up and the end of our playoff chances aren’t coincidental.

Those 5 walks Davis has since coming back up?
One less walk than Hank F has SINCE THE ALL-STAR BREAK.
Davis since his return: 253/287/425
Hank F since the ASB: 201/228/348
And I’m sure Hank had a cheap hit or three in that bunch.

When did Hank F have a cheap hit
since the AS Break?
I haven’t seen a cheap infield hit and his BABIP in the second half of this season is .237 (.300 for his career). Poor plate discipline and a lot of bad luck killed him after the AS Break.
The decision to shoehorn Davis into this line-up every day, especially in late August, helped kill This Thing’s playoff hopes.

The question that lies ahead is more about Davis getting it as an MLB nitter. History is pretty plain, and can’t be revised. The 1B issue now is whether Smoak will have to be rushed (if Davis doesn’t work out)

I agree with Ed...Hank's performance going forward is a non-factor for the Rangers
unless he goes to a rival (Oakland?) and rights the ship, which I think he will do.
Davis is the issue now and going forward and if this is the same hitter we see next year, it’s going to get really ugly when the pendulum of bad luck swings his way because both before and after the call-up, Chris Davis is not a very good hitter.

The organization didn't do jack
Hank F buried Hank F.
Hitting like Mark Belanger for two months, and six walks in the second half, is why Hank’s ass is plastered to the bench.
FWIW, Chris Davis’ first day back in the lineup was the same day Ted Kennedy died. So maybe the Rangers are 12-13 because they’re all left-wing politically, and were depressed over Kennedy’s passing. It makes about as much sense as one lineup change being the cause of Texas playing .500 ball over the last 25 games.
You know, now that I think about it, I had pasta with shrimp and alfredo sauce yesterday. The Cowboys and Rangers both lost! Maybe I should have a taco next Sunday?

Rangers went 11-15 that month.
Hank F started playing every day in July and the team goes 17-8.
Hank F goes to the bench/Davis takes over on August 25 and the team immediately goes 12-13.
Keep telling yourself it was all one big coincidence.

That's because it is
All one big coincidence.
You’re the only person here who thinks otherwise. Hank’s been even worse than Davis lately, so unless he has some kind of magical Jesus-presence that makes all of his teammates better, him being in the lineup would have made it suck even worse.
And if the rest of his teammates are so mentally fragile that they can’t handle Hank being benched (and rightfully so) then the poor widdle babies probably don’t deserve to be in the post-season.
Just a tip: when you’re the only one who thinks a certain way, it’s not always a sign that you’re a forward-thinking visionary. Sometimes, you’re just fucking wrong.
Now would be one of those times.

There were several players who had an .800+ OPS in May but they couldn't carry Davis' (.189 average/.238 obp) offensive incompetency

Chris Davis was exposed in June just like he was exposed in September.

See if you see a pattern here
Month Record ERA
April 10-11 5.70
May 20-9 3.57
June 11-15 4.24
July 17-8 3.59
August 14-15 4.56
Sept 9-9 4.56
It’s not rocket science, and as a student of the Great Game, I’m sure you’re familiar with the numbers above. This season isn’t about Hank F or CD because they are but one of nine players who can make a diffence at the plate. The guy on the mound makes all the difference, and when they’ve pitched well the Rangers have won more often than not. Please, for the love of God, give this Hank vs CD thing a rest, even if it is only for a couple of days. It isn’t worth discussing anymore.

Something that is not coincidental
is that the Rangers went 17-8 in July with a 1B who had an .847 OPS.
In every other month of this season, the Rangers had a 1B with an OPS below .705.

If you're suggesting the record and ERA correlation is coincidental
then I give up. Hank accounted for 24 runs in 25 July games (runs+RBI’s-HR) with 30 K’s. CD has accounted for 23 runs in 24 games with 28 K’s since getting called back. I really don’t see any difference in those numbers, because there isn’t any. If you were to argue that the pitching staff pitches better with Hank in the lineup you would make more sense than any of these arguments you’ve made to date.
If you want some slack, bring your own rope.

July 17-8 3.59 .765
August 14-15 4.56 .786
Sept 9-9 4.56 .727
what does that say?

Lackey
To me, that is garbage. If the Angels and Lackey need that to motivate them, they are a sad group of individuals. Plus, in a 162 game season, I don’t think something from May 18 would still be giving you an emotional edge. How about saying, we didn’t really care, we just started playing a lot better. It’s like every team nowadays needs to claim some slight from an opponent to prove their motivation. Just being motivated to win isn’t enough. It happens in every sport and it gets really old.

Is he really the only option on the FA market for the Rangers to improve in the #1/2 slots of their rotation?
Everything he says/does feels wrong to me.

Sheets, Harden, and Bedard...
but all come with injury concerns.
As far as the Rangers signing a FA starter, I think it comes down to Sheets or bust.

he's having a decent stretch
but his big problem has been control, and that is still an issue. he has been very fortunate and he will regress severely. you can’t walk as many guys as he is walking and be very successful

Since the Rangers let Tejeda go...
he’s had 103 IP, an ERA near 3.00, with a WHIP of about 1.15… even with 59 BB’s. Of course a .163 BAA helps quite a bit. I just wished they used him out of the bullpen more before they let him go.
Of course, I think he lost his roster spot when we acquired Nippert, so no real complaint there.

@jorgearangure I see the Yankees as the clear leaders for Chapman with the Dodgers and Angels as dark horses. Chapman told me he’s intrigued by SoCal.

I don't know if he'll pan out
but one thing that he definitely has that none of the others (Baez being the closest, but not in his league) that I can remember having is an elite arm, particularly since it’s from the left side. I guess we’ll see if he can learn how to pitch.
by Brett Perryman on Sep 21, 2009 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
All I know
is that Cuban players are horrendously boring to watch, and I can’t imagine having to sit there and wait for Chapman to pitch as he constantly throws over to first base paranoid that Teagarden is going to steal.

Sean S. (Clarion, PA)
How will the cubs go about their offseason if and when they get rid of Bradley? Who will they go after to replace that spot in the lineup?
Buster Olney (1:07 PM)
Sean: First they have to move the money, and then they have to get some marching orders/budget from the ownership. Pitching should and will be the priority. I wonder (PURE SPECULATION ALERT) if there is some way for them to work out a Millwood-Bradley thing, with the Rangers getting huge salary relief and maybe sending a Grade B-plus prospect. We’ll see how much of a money crunch the Rangers are under in the off-season, because of their ownership situation — and imagine if they could get Bradley for $1-2 million for the next couple of years, and move Millwood’s salary (and Millwood’s deal for next year should vest), amid concerns about how he’ll bounce back. Again, I’m just thinking out loud on that one…

A deal
If Millwood’s options vest, a Millwood for Bradley swap would be ideal for the Rangers. Saves money, brings in a sorely needed bat.

A B+ prospect
like Kiker? Moreland? Proveda? The more salary Chicago has to eat the better prospect they would want back. I, however, wouldn’t want Bradley.

except...
Bradley is not trying to position himself for his only major FA deal next year (as he was when he was here). That could go either way… he might not play as hard since there is no money to be had, but he might play harder because he doesn’t have to worry about the money.

I think folks are forgetting
what Bradley said during the off-season about not playing unless he felt 100% because it might hurt his numbers. I doubt JD will be interested. They got rid of Padilla and Ponson and let Bradley go. I think the front office has shown an inclination to steer away from troublemakers.

which fat fuck?
Bradley or Millwood.
I’d take Bradley. All you need for him is a spot of duct tape to cover his pie-hole and point him in the direction of the plate with a bat in his hand.

Interesting thought
The Cowboys season began at 3 pm on September 13, 2009.
The Rangers won the first game of a double-header which began at 1:30 pm on September 13, 2009.
Since the last game before the Cowboys started play (in other words, since the Cowboys season started), the Rangers have lost 6 of 7. In other words, the Rangers fade from contention can easily blamed on one person: Jerry Jones!!!!!!!!!
