Another interesting shift in Dallas media

It sounds like "ESPN Dallas" is just about to start, and Richard Durrett is one of the writers who has moved over to join them (along with Adam's favorite blogger). ESPN Chicago is presumably the model for how ESPN is going to approach these other big market sites that they're starting this fall/winter. They do have writer/blogger types who cover the individual teams, which is how I expect Durrett will be assigned. I know that Richard had to be frustrated by the fact that he was contractually obligated to have the FWST guys break actual news because of the arrangement between the two papers, so I hope he's able to cover the team like he and Evan Grant did when they were both at DMN and like Grant does at Inside Corner.

At any rate, we should have people from both papers, the team website, IC and ESPN Dallas all covering the team in some fashion, so information should be readily available. What it will do for that industry in this area will be interesting to follow, though.

If Durrett can do what Evan Grant does at Inside Corner

I might actually read ESPN’s site for non Keith Law material

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Evan Grant

The first thing that came to mind with this ESPN venture.

Then again, seems to be working out fine at Inside Corner…

It is interesting

to see the disintegration of the Newspaper market, and seeing how the various roles get picked up. I think Newspaper companies are just going to be left out in the cold, as other news organizations jump in, while the newspapers whine about creating a paysite model.

"I don't condone steroids or any other type of growth hormones or anything else, but I could care less, and, for the most part, I don't think the fans give a (bleep). The people that care about it are the people that probably don't like baseball," - Jim Leyland

It is shocking

to see some papers still considering any sort of pay model at this point.

Bait & Switch

But how long until all the good content on ESPN Dallas is behind the INsider wall like the mother ship?

by robert_d_wilfong on Sep 21, 2009 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

It was the corporatization of news that killed it. For example, the Star T was one of McClatchy’s only profitable newspapers for years, but were forced to make cuts for the greater good.

Newspapers will have to go hyper-local — a trend which is already happening in the Star-T and the little rag I work for. We’re already starting to see more neighborhood-specific papers here in Fort Worth. Before the news biz turned to corporations, there were several neighborhood/area type papers that thrived. It will be interesting to see how many of those types of papers go to an online only format.

The sports section in the Star T is their most widely-read section, and there will always be one — shabby as it is. Their mistake was paying Galloway half the farm. He’s occupies something like one-third of their budget.

Do you think the DMN and Star T will eventually merge?

Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year

by RangerMad on Sep 21, 2009 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

They're owned by two different companies

so the mechanics of that would be difficult and take time. The DMN is a sink-hole for Belo, and while the Star -T isn’t doing that great, it’s still doing better than the DMN. They’re already content sharing, which started with the photographers and has slowly worked its way into copy. So, it’s completely possible.

A few things would have to happen for the two to merge. For one, McClatchy doesn’t want to give up their former cash-cow. But it’s entirely possible that there will not be a McClatchy in a few years. After all Knight Ridder was the 3rd biggest news corporation in the U.S a few years ago, and it completely vanished in 2005 (I think). Secondly, Belo, who also owns WFAA, the local ABC affiliate, is shedding its newspapers, and would gladly get rid of the DMN, I imagine.

So, if McClatchy folds and the same company picks up the Star-T and the DMN, I could see a DFW paper emerging from all of that business. That would be an Epic fail for the news business. The lack of local competition would all but guarantee one shitty newspaper.

by egriffey on Sep 21, 2009 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

The fact that the DMN is a financial sinkhole for Belo is really a shame

Because without the DMN, there would be no Belo.

I’m not saying that the DMN/Belo didn’t bring it upon themselves, because they probably did. But still, there’s a great Texas news legacy in the connection between those two names.

Yeah

The DMN has laid off/bought out hundreds of staffers over the last few years. It’s just not the same paper without all of those experienced news people. For example, I read in the DMN (I think) that Django Rinehart will be headlining the Django Rnehart guitar festival. Rinehart has of course been dead since 1953. A veteran reporter/editor would have caught that.

Its a shame ESPN Dallas will probably cover the Cowboys 90% of the time

and Mark Cuban assorted stories 5% of the time. Maybe we’ll wait for ESPN Fort Worth for thorough coverage the Rangers.

I figured he had moved on, and I also figured an ESPN Dallas thing was coming but I didn’t put the 2 together.

Good news as far as I’m concerned.

from what I have read, the Star Telegram is still one of the few profitable newspapers in the McClatchy Empire. So far, anyway. As a matter of accuracy, the paper is not called the Fort Worth Star Telegram anymore. That was one of the changes that the McClatchy people made. It is just the Star Telegram.

Here's a question I've never known the answer to

Why are there so many newspapers with the word “Star” in their name? Anyone know the answer? The paper with the biggest circulation in Wyoming is the Casper Star Tribune, the largest newspaper in Canada is the Toronto Star. Just one of those things I’ve never understood.

Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

Pure Guess

People used stars for navigation and to see which way they should go. Star in the name suggests that their information could be used for much the same.

Stick a fork in DMN. They’re done. Only reason I’d even think about going to the DMN blogs would be to read Heika’s blog for hockey.
