Josey, Hank, and Davis

Okay, I'm tired of every morning post, game day thread, post game thread, and anything else being hijacked by arguments with Josey about Hank Blalock and Chris Davis.

So no more of that in any threads.  All that needs to be confined to this FanPost.  And if folks want to rec it up, it will be able to stay in the rec'd FanPosts for a while and thus stay on the main page.

This requires two levels of cooperation.  First, it requires Josey to stop posting about Chris Davis and Hank Blalock in every main page post.

But second, it requires everyone else to stop Josey-baiting.  It seems like half the arguments about Davis and Blalock start with someone besides him posting something along the lines of, "Josey really must have hated seeing Chris Davis hit that triple last night" or "Yeah, but think how much better the Rangers would be if they'd just played Hank F. all year."

Any Josey posts about Hank or Davis anywhere other than here, and any Hank/Davis Josey-baiting posts anywhere other than here, will be deleted.

Very good idea, adam.

It’s very clear now who won The Great Hank Blalock War of June 2009 and my scoreboard pointing will be confined to this little area of greatness.

That's strange.

Furman didn’t point to the scoreboard Saturday against Missouri. Why would you do the same?

Don't get too smug

There’s still that matter of your humiliating defeat in the Great Elvis Andrus War.

And I think I saw 73 wins waving in the rear view mirror…

Minor skirmishes, RC

I had to acknowledge I was wrong about Tiny E sometime ago.

Per 73 wins, given what I knew going into the season about the team, I would have guessed 73 wins again and quite a bit of that forecast was tied up in Tiny E and also not realizing how much Nolan Ryan would influence this pitching staff.

The Great Hank Blalock War of June 2009 was the big one.

It was an issue within the season identified early as a big problem (kept running Davis out there despite the fact that he was drowning) and I never wavered.

I lost?

The scoreboard disagrees…

See 11-15, 28-19, 11-12.

The added cherry on top and salt in the wound was the historical offensive ineptitude (1 run in 5 games?!?!) coming to an immediate halt.

And again:

Chris Davis’ post-ASB OPS is almost 200 points higher than Hank Blalock’s. That is an argument you have yet to refute. As a result, you lose.

Hank F Blalock's OPS in September is

150 points higher than Chris Davis.

Are you boys going to break out the party hats when Davis (currently .693) gets his OPS above .700 for the year?

HA!

Man, I can’t believe I fell for it. Dude, you totally had me going. I thought this whole bit thing was real. Wow, man, that’s commitment.

But you gave yourself away when you claimed that Hank’s Sept. OPS is higher than CD’s. Because nobody — I mean, nobody — would be dumb enough to mention that, considering Hank’s played in all of six games in September.

Dude, bravo. Just an absolute masterpiece of a performance. You really had me going. Kudos.

If you are going to compare small sample sizes you need to

do it both ways.

As tough a season as Blalock has had, his OPS is still 60 points higher than Davis.

Andrus exceeding expectations is a big reason this team was still in the playoff hunt in September.

I would kind of think

that the team prediction is a more important one than the F war. But, If you are right about the F war, then you are actually probably worse off with regard to your prediction. If the Rangers would have been that much better off by playing F, just think how bad your predictive skills would look had they played him the entire year.

If Davis catches fire in the last two weeks

and let’s say for example gets his OPS above Hank F’s (who the fuck are you kidding?) this particular thread will be swarming with people looking for their bowl of blood – don’t count on it – if Davis has an OPS below .700 on September 22, it’s not going to happen.

LSB loved talking about this issue in mid August (when Hank F was struggling) and also when Davis came up had a decent week after coming up.

Then the Sack of Shit went 8 for 46 and the offense scored 1 run in 5 games (with Hank buried) at the most important time of year and the season was pissed away.

Hank F coming back to the line-up after being buried and making an immediate difference was the final dagger.

This was the dominant issue of the season (identified in early June by me) that JD bungled at every turn and in the end it killed the team’s chance for post-season.

The way that the Great Hank Blalock War of June 2009 eventually played out has people in a tizzy and now they don’t wanna talk about it / have me banned.

“The offense scored 1 run in 5 games . . . .”

You realize that wasn’t CD’s fault, right? Are you aware there are 8 other hitters on the team. That’s about 160 plate appearances where no one was getting shit done.

Why do you call Davis a sack of shit?

F had his struggles this year too when Davis got sent down and you don’t call him a sack of shit when he played similarly. I understand what you are trying to do, I just don’t understand your complete hatred for Davis. You dislike him more than anyone here dislikes Blalock. I get that you dislike Daniels for doing his best to ruin this team (/sarcasm), but why hate one of the players who just goes out there and does his best, whether that’s up to your standards or not?

by CS3 on Sep 23, 2009 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My feelings towards Davis are a direct reflection of his own performance

on the field.

He seems like a good guy. Very accommodating to kids and old women at spring training and would also wave at drunk guys randomly calling his name out. He plays hard, always hustles and is a good defender.

Given what he did in 2008 at his age, I thought he was one of the bright spots of the team and would have a much better year than Tiny E. I thought Davis had earned 1B on Opening Day this year based on how well he had played the year previous.

My problems with Davis started in early June when he was obviously drowning (hit .189 / with .238 obp in May) yet the organization thought it would be smart to put Hank F (.854 OPS for first two months) in a heavy platoon. That was the first time that it became very clear Chris Davis was being propped up and given the position because JD (who I profoundly dislike personally & professionally) had drafted him.

Hank F didn’t handle it well and neither did The Room but we know what happened in July.

JD mandating that Hank F be buried after September 2 while Davis shit the bed again (8 for 46) and then going back to Hank F once they fell out of contention only enhanced my disgust with how management bungled the most important issue they faced this season.

So it’s not personal with Davis at all but it definitely is with Little Boy Donuts.

It's really simple. JD isn't very good at his job

and I think he’s a fraud.

I think he’s been propped up in here and other places. He’s bulletprood in the DMN.

The big defense for him in the early years is that “it was his learning curve.”

Think that shit would fly in Boston, Chicago, LA or NYC?

Tom Hicks brought Nolan Ryan here because the Rangers were doing something worse than pissing off their fans….they were causing mass apathy. How the hell do you lose 600,000 fans in three years!??!

So yeah, it’s personal and professional with JD.

Chicago

I’d say it would fly in Chicago.

Kenny Williams was pretty much a joke in his first couple years as a GM (anyone remember Moneyball?) but then went on to win a World Series in his 5th year on the job.

Jim Hendry’s had a long run with the Cubs despite only once getting past the first round of the playoffs.

Also, Omar Minaya’s had a longer leash with the Mets than I’d expected he would receive, especially after the Tony Bernazard fiasco and the blow-up at that reporter this summer.

I suspect that could be possible.

Also, if you read T.R. Sullivan’s mailbags, you’d see that Ranger fans aren’t the brightest bulbs on the tree, not because there’s something special about Ranger fans but just because people in general are stupid.

But, then again, most Ranger fans probably couldn’t pick Jon Daniels out of a lineup. I mean, are you suggesting that Jon Daniels would be in physical danger if he sat near the dugout at home?

The people I know, white 40 something guys who love sports know who he is and don’t like him. He’s the stupid sonofabitch that traded CYoung, AGonzales, Soriano and John Danks for the load of shit in somebody else’s front yard.

Well

I doubt it’s any fear for his life.

JD’s from Queens, and rode the train an hour each way to and from school. Compared to that, angry Ranger fans are about as scary as a dandelion.

He’s also not afraid to show his face in public. I’m thinking he’s in the suite because he’s working. That’s the simplest explanation, but why use Ockham’s Razor when you can invent a conspiracy behind everything?

And it’s funny- most of my friends are white late-30’s/early 40’s guys who love sports, and they think JD’s OK. He’s the guy who traded for Neftali and Elvis, found half of a solid bullpen on the scrap heap, and drafted Holland, Borbon, and Hunter.

No one is arguing that he is not seen on TV very often

The argument is your theory on why it is true. Your contention was that it is because he is not liked by the “fans on tv”. I think the fans on TV see Nolan and “the ananymous guy sitting next to him”. And usually when they show Nolan on the screen, it is because the announcers are talking about Nolan at the time, so there is even less attention paid to the guy sitting next to him.

Is it simple?

We agree on the premise: we see Nolan Ryan on television quite a bit at home games and we never see JD. What we don’t agree on is the reason.

I would think that the simplest explanation is probably the most likely to be true, i.e., Ranger fans know who Nolan Ryan is. It’s like asking why I never get shown on TV but hot chicks do.

JD is a vampire

If he were to go outside and sit with Nolan, he would brust into flame. How do I know this is true? Because he is not sitting outside with Nolan.

Nolan can’t stand the smell and wont let JD sit next to him. How do I know this is true? Because he is not sitting outside with Nolan.

JD is a Hatfield

The people who hold the season tickets to the seats behind Nolan are McCoys. Every time JD sits there, they throw popcorn at him all through the game. Nolan wont make them stop because they are long-time season ticket holders and he doesn’t want to offend them. So JD moved to the suite. How do I know this is true? Because he is not sitting outside with Nolan.

JD is an alien fugitive (the outer-space kind)

His pursuers currently suspect he may be hiding out on Earth. JD is hiding in the suite where is he shielded from their spaceship’s sensors. If he goes outside where he is exposed, they will beam him away and take him back to their home world. How do I know this is true? Because he is not sitting outside with Nolan.

this year on NESN. You see their manager most of the time if they cut away.

basically, no GM gets alot of face time. They’ll be shown from time to time just like JD is, usually in a suite, not in a seat by the dugout.

I’ve seen Theo several times this year.

I’ve seen JD once – at Seattle, without a cell phone when several minor league games were being played and having a grand old time with Bill Haselman.

There - wasn't that easy?

A logical (albeit still speculative) reason versus some stupid theory that fans hate JD so that’s why he doesn’t sit in the stands at home games. I agree – it’s possibly marketing to have Nolan in the stands.

Here’s another possible reason that will certainly appeal to you – Nolan probably knows a good amount about pitching mechanics so maybe he just likes to be near the field to watch.

Speaking of JD (and since we're here)...

Do you boys think he did a good job handling the Blalock / Davis situation this year/

To me it was the dominant issue of the season (emerged in early June) and was bungled in every possible way (to the detriment of both players and the team) by JD.

I think he did best he could

Since they both suuuhhhcked. However, one was cheap, young and possibly a part of the future. The other was older, often injured and probably not a part of the future. CD’s 2008 provided enough evidence to give him the starting the job. No one thought CD would do this badly going into the season.

It was just one of many issues during the season for the FO, and probably not the most important. And if you had not gotten everyone on this site riled up at every opportunity, then it wouldn’t have been the “dominant issue” here either.

I don't have any problems with Jamey (although I disagree profoundly with him about JD & Tom Hicks). His reports are gold and very important to Ranger fans. He said that I never broke any rule or crossed any bright line

but he didn’t like the reaction of several people in the room else towards me. People see me minding my own business yet wanna make a name for themselves by throwing down their gloves.

You assume we have a powerless GM (when the truth is probably Tom took power away from himself) and yet still blame him for the ‘screw ups’ on handeling Hank/Davis, allowing Benson to start in the rotation while having Feldman in the bullpen, and just being Galloway’s parrot when it comes to your next catch phrase.

yeah

it probably is. The peole I saw were just wandering down a River Walk on the Amur River, like a Sunday Stroll, didn’t seem like hard-core drinkers, but Alcoholism I am sure is a problem. Another thing is that sometimes it’s so cold, Vodka is needed to keep out the cold, like antifreeze. I accidently checked out of an airport in Siberia, where it was like -15F, I was just supposed to change planes, not get out of the Airport. A Drunk Russian says to me, Welcome to Siberia! in the shed of a baggage claim area. So then, in the 5-10 minutes it took to walk back in to the Airport, my legs and hands just about Froze, and my face too, I could hardly breathe. I just about didn’t make it. So, they do drink because of that as well.

I understand

that people should spell correctly. I teach English so I am in total agreeance. My point is on here, people in the middle of an argument counteract a point with a correction of grammar like they are saying that proves they are right. Either they think that proves they are right, or they have no other response and that is their fallback. If I make a really good point and misspell a word, that doesn’t mean my point has absolutely no merit.

“agreeance” isn’t a word.

from dictionary.com

Main Entry: agreeance
Part of Speech: n
Definition: the act of agreeing
Example: Usage of the site constitutes agreeance with these terms.
Usage: considered obsolete and a bastardization of ‘agreement’

While it is now commonly used anymore, it is still a word. Nice try…

The "Donuts" shit is starting to bother me

I mowed lawns as a small kid, worked at fast food (A&W) in high school while working as a LL umpire too, during college I was in the oil field and roofed for a while among many other things. Now I’m an attorney. Those previous jobs don’t make me a bad person or a bad attorney so what’s the deal? That JD did honest work at a donut shop? Do you just look down at everyone that wasn’t blessed with some wonderful first job? What’s wrong with working and making an honest living through life? Or even, god forbid, working your way to and through college?

What’s your damn problem with this? If JD had never done any type of menial work, you’d claim he was just some spoiled, Ivy league asshole that doesn’t deserve his job. Since he did menial labor, you imply he’s undeserving of such a sophisticated position.

JD

He’s not that bad at his job- Nolan Ryan sure as fuck didn’t acquire all the talent that’s gone into this year’s club.

The problem, Josey, is that JD admittedly had a rough couple seasons at the beginning, you made up your mind that he was worthless, and nothing he’s done since will change your mind about that.

Never mind that he was able to swing a trade that other GM’s use as a benchmark for trading away a premier player without Nolan “supervising” him; never mind that the 2007 draft came without Nolan and has already produced Borbon and Hunter; never mind that the emphasis on defense was JD’s idea, and that it’s been that change that’s led to most of the improvement in the Rangers’ pitching this year.

No, in your mind, Nolan came riding in on a white horse, took the keys away from little Jonny Donuts and banished him to his playroom, and led the Rangers to the promised land all on his own.

It’s a real cute theory, and I’m sure it fits your black-and-white worldview just fine, but the truth of the matter is that it’s about 99.9% your imagination, mixed with Texas’ finest horse manure.

Here is the key phrase -

“…JD admittedly had a rough couple seasons at the beginning”

His third year was also a dumpster fire.

JD was the architect of the 2008 team that gave up 967 runs and led MLB in errors committed. The stupidity we saw the first couple of seasons continued after the 2007 season – see JJennings & Broussard acquisitions.

The stupidity of the organization came to a screeching halt on February 6, 2008 and it was not coincidental.

Jennings & Broussard

Really small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.

And JD was also the architect of this year’s team.

It’s really nice that you can pinpoint the exact date that this organization turned around, though- much like the date that Hank F’s magical Jesus-presence made the whole team better. It’s extremely coincidental to everyone except you.

It does get me, though, that for all your talk earlier this year that we should all enjoy the ride and stop bitching about things, that you, Mr. 73 Wins, are still so eaten up with the JD hate that you’d rather focus on that instead of appreciating an 88-90 win team that’s on the way up. Yeah, that would mean giving JD credit for acquiring all the talent that’s driving This Thing, but that’s what a rational person would do.

Too bad JD mandated that Hank F be buried after September 2.

You remember that game, don’t you?

The day after the Young injury, Hank F goes to 1B and has a nice night (2 for 4 and team wins) but Washington strangely makes a big deal out of letting everybody know this wasn’t going to happen very often the rest of the season.

At the time, Texas trails Boston by 2.5 and LAAA by 3.5.

With hat in hand, trailing by 7.5 games and the historical stench of scoring 1 run in 5 games engulfing the franchise, the team unearths Blalock citing the need for a “veteran presence” in the line-up.

What happens the very night Blalock starts playing every day?

The team that had scored 1 run in their previous 5 games goes on to score 28 runs in their next 5 games.

Some of your finest work to date, Little Boy Donuts.

Funny

I thought all decisions had to be made by Nolan. Unless it’s the ones you don’t like.

Seriously, did JD kill your dog and have sex with it while making you watch? It’s the only way to explain this pathological hatred you have for the man.

I’ve never seen anyone get their panties in such a twist over the GM of their team, especially in a season where said team is exceeding pre-season expectations. If he’s really screwing up the team that badly, why doesn’t your man Nolan step in? Is he powerless to stop the fiendish JD and his army of snow monkeys?

Nolan observes, evaluates, suggests and then implements change where needed – see massive changes in pitching & defense this year.

He also greenlights free agent signings and trades that JD submits. Isn’t it amazing how we no longer see dumbass signings or trades since February 6, 2008? JD is much less of a wrecking ball this way.

Per Hank F – Do you really think JD had nothing to do with him being buried?

Did Ryan finally tell JD to knock off the bullshit with Hank F? Don’t know.

I do know that JD looks like an absolute idiot for burying Blalock after September 2.

JD

Well, he was able to make the best trade of his career- the Teixeira deal- without having Nolan around.

He’s also been on the job a few years now, so I’d put the lack of “dumbass signings or trades” as much on JD’s learning curve being behind him as anything Nolan’s done.

As for Hank, who gives a fuck besides you? If he hadn’t hit like the crippled love child of Yuniesky Betancourt and Brad Ausmus in the second half, he wouldn’t have been buried. It’s really nice that he’s had a good last few days, but it still doesn’t change that he’s been absolutely terrible since the All-Star Break.

For someone who’s crowed over and over that “The Great Hank Blalock War” is over, you sure do feel the need to keep fighting that battle…

Barnone, the most disappointing player on the team this year has been Chris Davis and it is only poetic justice that he was the drum major to that epic fuck up yesterday.

Validation of who was most at fault yesterday...

“And if you’re wondering how Chris Davis felt after the game, the answer is awful. It was his error with two outs in the eighth inning that started the spiral. “I missed a routine ground ball and that’s the game,” the classy Davis said."

Davis

Hitting .300/.340/.500 for September, with an 806 OPS since coming back from the minors.

So why exactly shouldn’t he have been in the lineup yesterday?

Davis,

unfortunately for his supporters, has a past.

Davis has a .544 OPS v LH pitching this season.
Blalock has a .664 OPS v LH pitching this season.

The presence of Blalock (instead of Davis) means much more to the line-up is something we know and then we see how they do v LH pitching and it’s a slam-dunk.

Esteban German should have started over Davis as evidenced by his .941 OPS v LH pitching.

The team has been trying to shoehorn Davis into the line-up any way they can and it bit them on the ass at the most important time of the season.

German

You’re going to use a 17-at-bat sample size as justification for German being able to hit LH pitching?

Yeah, Davis made an error yesterday. But Frankie still had a three-run lead going into the 9th, and couldn’t hold it. That’s not on Davis.

And like I said, Davis has an 806 OPS since coming back up from the minors- that’s hardly a guy who needs to be “shoehorned” into the lineup. Hank F and his 610 OPS since the ASB, on the other hand…

We go to the 9th inning

with a 6-0 lead if Davis makes that play.

It was poetic justice that it was Chris Davis who opened Pandora’s Box because management has shoehorned him into the line-up despite his performance all year long and it ended up being the final nail in the coffin.

Baseball is a funny game because at every level (from Little League to The Show) the ball will magically find the person who either shouldn’t be out there in the first place (like Davis) or doesn’t want it hit to him.

Can CDavis

have one full month in The Show this year with an OPS above .710?

That would go a long way towards getting me to believe he has a decent future in The Show. The only reason he is here right now is because the GM drafted him.

No, he's not

806 OPS since returning from the minors- and since he’s at 840 for September, I’d say it’s pretty safe to say that he’s going to have a full month with an OPS over .710.

Davis is here because your boy shit himself when given the opportunity to play 1B full-time, while Davis did well in AAA, and has been improving since coming back up.

It has nothing to do with who drafted Davis. And even if it did, why would JD favoring a guy he acquired be any different from what every other GM in the history of pro sports does?

you're reaching Josey

I don’t really care about you or your bit, but this thread makes you look like a dog chasing his tail. You have never once mentioned Davis and his lack of defensive ability as the reason he shouldn’t be playing. Now you claim the ball magically found him because he shouldn’t be out there. You are right, he should not have been out there at 3rd base. He should have been playing 1st where he is one of the best defensive first baseman in the game and at least this month, and improving offensive player.

If Hank "Feeble" Blalock

wasn’t so brittle, he would have been playing his natural position, 3B, instead of taking CD’s position. But Hank, at 28, has proven that he is more injury prone than McCarthy.

JD made some mistakes. He’s done a lot better since. Stop beating a dead horse.

zero improvement from the unmoderated board to you taking over. I don’t necessarily believe you made those boards any worse, but I have seen no evidence that you moderating a board made it better, either. Too bad

that Davis made his big push when the team was hopelessly out of the race. Yesterday was very much like a spring training (Lackey went two innings) game.

The Chris Davis who shit the bed from April thru July (.202 average / .256 obp) and then went 11 for 56 with 4 walks (.196 average / .250 obp) from September 2-20 when the team was still in contention is the Chris Davis that mattered to 2009.

Let the healing begin, RC.

If Davis shit the bed, Hank shit the bed, the floor, and left a greasy brown streak all the way to the bathroom.

So you're reduced to evaluating what Davis did over the last 5 weeks

of the season? Think he can keep getting that many infield hits over a full season?

Unfortunately, your boy had 114Ks in his first 277 plate appearances (.202 avarage / .256 obp)and had to have his ass shipped back to OKC.

When given the job (he didn’t earn it) once again at the most important time of year he goes 11 for 56 with four walks (.196 average / .250 obp) which are numbers very similiar to the vomit he put up before getting sent down.

To further punctuate how bad he was this season, Davis then makes the error that opens Pandora’s Box last Sunday. Poetic justice to this season, indeed and a very ironic nail in the coffin.

When are you going to say that 2009 (just like 2006-present day is for Little Boy Donuts) was an important part of the Chris Davis “learning curve”?

I’m not defending Davis’ overall numbers. He had a terrible year. Though it is funny that you accuse me of cherry-picking five weeks, when you used an 18-day period in September to criticize Davis.

My point is: as bad as Davis has been this year, your boy Hank F has been almost as bad, and since the All-Star Break, he’s been absolutely terrible. And yet you continue to prop him up like he’s been the key to the Rangers’ season.

It’s OK, though. I’m sure he’ll send for you a few times next year wherever he winds up. Good ball-lickers are hard to find.

Josey can’t get over that fact, and will harp on about Blalock next year. Blalock sucks. Davis has shown some signs lately and hopefully it turns around. I think ANY (well almost any) Ranger fan would agree that Davis turning it around is and will be a good thing for the Rangers.

Obviously Josey is a HUGE fan of Blalock, and should root for the team that signs him. It would be a welcome relief from this garbage.

I thought the front-office dumbassery stopped when Nolan Jesus Ryan took over. Or is that only on the pitching side of things?

I’m still very curious why you think JD “favoring his guys” is some kind of weapon to beat him with, when it’s really not. If he were the only sports executive to do so, sure, but he’s no different from any of his counterparts in that regard.

JD is such a friggin dumb ass

Why didn’t Nolan step in and force Wash/Jd to step aside and start Blalock full time?

I mean, how much more obvious can it be?

In one hand:
A 23 year old prospect with stellar defense at first base and a 237/284/443 slash who is trending upward
or
A 28 year old, injury prone, soon-to-be free agent, below-average-defensively, recently-converted first baseman with a 235/277/462 slash trending downward

Nolan needs to tell JD right now, that next season, every player needs to play based on the team’s record in games that that player started. As soon as another player has a higher win/loss split, they need to be bumped into the starting lineup

Maybe the M’s if they can’t resign whatshisface.

Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

I think he ends up on an AL team...

Platoon DH, somewhere in the 750-1M range.

The Great War is over and the winner is...

well, nobody. The loser however was the Rangers:

Davis : 419 PA’s 21 HR’s 24 BB’s 150 K’s .238/.284/.442 .726 OPS 88 OPS+
Blalock : 495 PA’s 25 HR’s 26 BB’s 108 K’s .234/.277/.459 .736 OPS 89 OPS+

They were basically the same player offensively with Davis getting the edge defensively.

The Rangers simply must get more offense from their 1B/DH combination next season if they want to win the West.

Yep

The Rangers would be wise to find a DH who is a born masher who can step in at 1B if Davis shits the bed again.

The Ranger record after Davis was recalled (and Hank F buried / relegated to "part-time duty")

was 18-21.

The Ranger record with Hank F in the line-up the 47 games previous to the last 39 games was 28-19.

The Ranger record in June with Davis playing every day (and Hank F in a heavy platoon) was 11-15.

I said moments before the August 25 Yankee game started that Davis coming back to the team was The End. Critical to the demise was the 11 for 56 with four walks (.196 average / .250 obp) Davis had from September 2-20 and the error he made v Tampa was poetic justice.

Like Carmela Soprano, you can never say that you weren’t told.

The Great Hank Blalock War of June 2009 was a bloody affair but make no mistake, if you were a supporter of Chris Davis, you got your ass whipped.

A minor skirmish (like my prediction regarding Tiny E) that I quickly came to realize and admit being wrong.

The 73 win prediction is offset by my prediction that the M’s would be in a tight race with the Rangers (the M’s finished 2 games behind the Rangers).

Blalock / Davis was at an entirely different level with a lot of blood shed on both sides.

Little Boy Donuts tackling this issue with all the aplomb of a monkey fucking a football was the difference between this team being out of the race in mid-September and taking the Red Sox / Angels down to the wire.

Also, would you say that Hank F. B padded his stats in September of ’08? How is that any different than what CD did after being recalled?

I said "taken under advisement" which doesn't

constitute any kind of agreement re “poetic justice.” I’ll use it when I want and Davis opening Pandora’s Box is a good place.

Per Blalock padding his stats in September 08? You could look at that way but it appears to be a continuation of what he was doing earlier in the season.

Chris Davis sucked dick in spring training, April, May, June, July, was okay for a week in August and then sucked the same big green dick again from September 2-20 before padding his stats the last two weeks of the season.

Well, players play against 40 man call ups in September...

…as you well know.

So yeah, Hank padded his stats in September, fooling Ranger management (both JD and NR) to pick up the option, and proceeded to suck the same dick CD did all year.

Hopefully we aren’t fooled by CD’s September and instead he will not suck big dicks next year as Hank did this year.

Time will tell.

You can say Hank F padded his stats

but it was also a continuation of what he had done earlier in the year.
It’s kind of a non-issue that’s not worth arguing.

Chris Davis sucked dick for the entire season save the last two weeks when this team was definitely out of post-season contention.

Chris Davis definitively padded his stats the last two weeks of this season.

Regarding Chris Davis and the future...

I don’t know what to think about him just yet.

Before this season, I thought he was going to be one of the finest young power hitters in the game and he was then allowed to suck the biggest donkey dick for longer than any other player I could ever remember.

I don’t know of any player in major league history who put up 114Ks in 277 plate appearances with a .202 average / .256 obp.

You’re going to have idiots rave about what he did after coming back (.338 obp/.834 ops) as evidence that he’s rebounded but that’s dumb.

All you need to know is that on September 20, Chris Davis had a .214 batting average / .264 obp and padded his stats the last two weeks of the season.

Figuring out what Davis is going to do in 2010 is one of the most pressing issues this team faces because his performance in 2009 was one of the worst in major league baseball.

Look around, you simply cannot be a contender in the AL if your 1B requires training wheels.

Selection Bias

You have fallen for one of the classic mistakes. Its called “Selection Bias” That’s when you have a conclusion (Chris Davis sux) and then you pick and choose data to support that conclusion.

For example, you point to September 2 through September as being the most important time of the year, when CD hit .196 with a .603 OPS and cost the rangers a pennant. but how were these games more important than, say, August 25 through September 2, when CD hit .355 with an OPS of .912? or more important than September 21 through September 29 (the day the Rangers were officially eliminated) when he hit .379 with an OPS of 1.006? Of course they weren’t important. why? because they don’t fit your hypothesis.

We all know Chris Davis is a bit streaky. he’ll probably remain so. We also know that he’ll hit. Guys don’t make it to the majors at age 22 on the basis of their offense unless they possess the ability to hit.

So, wanna guess over/under on Chris Davis’ OPS next year? how about if I set the bar nice and high: over/under at .750? you still comfortable taking the under? willing to risk $100 on it? $1000? Your house? or is it really that important to you?

I call you out Josey.

No, I'm not.

Davis was simply horrific this past season and a big reason we’re home this week but I’m still leaving the door open for him to be better based on what he did (at his age) in 2008.

I’m not fooled by anything he did after getting called back up. For a month, he was basically the same hitter he was when his ass was shipped to OKC. Although he wasn’t drowning to the same extent, he was still making waaaaay too many outs and not taking enough walks.

His numbers were propped up by 9-10 infield hits and I also don’t know how to take the fact that he finished very well when the team was unquestionably out of post-season contention.

Dead wrong, Ryin.

Chris Davis was an all-time cocksucker this year but I view success at an early age (which Davis had in 2008) as one of the greatest markers of success a player can have. Either in here or over at NMLR, I said before the season that I was very bullish on Davis and expected him to hit 30-40 bombs.

I was pissed about the Davis situation because we had a very real chance to win THIS YEAR and the presence of Chris Davis on this team was very obviously hurting our chances of winning.

There are no guarantees for next year. We’re probably due for a step back, maybe two steps in 2010. There’s nobody in AAA to help This Thing and we’re losing players, not adding.

The defined weakness of Little Boy Donuts is his ability to assess what his own team needs and getting a major league player to address that need. Throw in the beyond murky ownership situation and it’s easy to see Texas going backwards in 2010.

The 2009 season has come and gone for those teams who aren’t in the post-season so it’s time to look forward and deal with the cards we have. I haven’t dismissed the possibility that Davis rebounds but I’m not near as bullish on him as I was before 2009.

It's what I said above, Ryin

I have no idea what to expect from Chris Davis in 2010.

His first two years in The Show touched both ends of the spectrum, outstanding at age 22 and one of the worst players in MLB at age 23.

Nolan won’t fire JD this off-season and it’s his biggest mistake since coming aboard on that glorious day in February 2008.
