OT - Bachelor Party in Austin
I posted this at BTB as well, but thought you guys could probably help out as well..
Hey Guys.. I had a quick question for you regarding a bachelor party in Austin. I'm originally from Dallas. but never spent much time in Austin. Moved up to New Jersey about 18 years ago (not my choice), and now me and 11 other guys are flying down to Austin for a buddies bachelor party. Most of us are flying in on Thursday, October 15th and staying till Sunday.
Was wondering if you guys had suggestions to make this a party to remember. Looking for Bars, Strip clubs, food, or other attractions/fun things to do. I know that we will be there the weekend of UT/OKLA although will be played in Dallas. Will the campus and surrounding areas still be crazy??
I appreciate you responses in this matter as I love the information I get from this website and all its constituents.
Thanks in advance.
Jared

6th Street.
That’s all you really need to know. Don’t go to Coyote Ugly, it sucks and is expensive. Make sure you get some Roppolo’s pizza about 12:30 to stave off the drunkeness.

6th street is what I've been hearing from everyone,
Thanks for the reply. Any place specific?

Chugging Monkey is good and I can't remember the name of the other place we used to go.
Of course this was 3 years ago when I was still in school, so things might have changed. That 22 mile drive from Austin to San Marcos is a pain….

Just curious
what do you think is expensive?
How much for beer/mixed drinks?

Agreed on Coyote ugly.
Seems like there are more attractive girls just club/bar hopping than the waitresses there. I went there for my bachelor party and my friends told them.
They call attention to you, bend you over the bar, pull your shirt up, right on your back with red marker and that’s it. I guess it’s fun if you want to be embarrassed, but the red marker will soak into your shirt.

6th st sucks
unless you are big into underage drinking or like real young eye candy. The 25 and over crowd tend stay around 4th st. I’d go to Lance Armstrong’s SIX bar and kind of hang around that area if you are downtown. If you are wanting to watch the game somewhere you could do Scholtz beer garden or the new cain and abels on lake austin. Both are pretty cool indoor outdoor venues. Strip clubs cant help much, but stay away from anything thats further east of I35 access rd. Yellow Rose over the years had the best talent.

6th
is a disaster now. It’s full of homeless people and 19 year old sleeze bags. Stick to 4th.
Although, Thursday is college night on 6th and you can get completely hammered for really cheap. Several of the bars have $1 beers; you just have to be willing to brave the trash.

6th street area.
For people not from Austin, 6th street generally means an area that’s a few streets wide (4th-6thish) and quite long. It’s just a ton of fun. A wide mix of people from UT Freshman to indy rock snobs to sports fans, etc. It’s the most busy on nights after game days in Austin, but we had my bachelor party on the weekend after July 4th and it was still pretty busy. It’s big enough that you can go there multiple nights and get completely different experiences. It really does seem like there’s something for everybody from sports bars to euro/modern clubs to hip hop clubs to irish pubs.
We stayed at the Omni, and if you have any can, I’d highly recommend it. They have a rooftop pool and hot tub. While there’s generally not a lot of people up there, it’s a FANTASTIC place to bring beer/drinks and cigars up to. Just something about hot tubbing on a rooftop in a city….
Though I’m not always in the mood for it, one place that consistently delivers is Fado’s on 4th street. Usually has good live (Irish) music and a good beer selection.

Post-partying: Kerbey Lane (Open 24 hrs, the wait can be long)
Donuts: RoundRock Donuts (It’s kinda far from Austin, but they have the Texas Donut son…step up!)
BBQ: I’m sure there’s a ton of good places, but I haven’t been to any. I’ve heard good things about IronWorks BBQ and of course Stubbs

Threadgill's
One of two places I try to hit every time I’m in Austin- the other being the original Chuy’s on Barton Springs.
Some of the best home cooking I’ve ever had- and the newer location was owned (it may still be) by the parents of the girl who played Gabrielle on Xena: Warrior Princess.
I’ve been to Fado’s once and remember enjoying it. If I’m ever in Austin on a weekend morning again, I’ll definitely have to go- that’s where the Austin/San Antonio half of the Texas Liverpool supporters’ club meets to watch the matches.

I wish I could remember the place...
…it’s on S. Congress. Has a big oak tree behind it on the patio. Small. Anyway they cook real simple American food like meatloaf and shit. Chicken fried steak cannot be beaten. Mashed potatoes? Brilliant. It’s literally like my mother would make if she could cook. Really tastes homemade.
Maybe someone will know it from the description. It’s on the east side of the street, maybe a half mile south of the river.

Don’t get me wrong its not gonna turn into a ghost town when everybody heads north but alot of the party atmosphere is going to go north for that weekend. The people who aren’t going to the actual game still come to go to the fair and be in the environment.
Austin is a great city and you can still have a great time. Just probably could have had a crazier time had you picked a different weekend.

4th street is better.
Fado’s is always good. Plenty of stuff around there as well.
Chuy’s > El Arroyo. Not even close. However, that crap any Mexican restaurant calls queso sucks! Look for “queso flameado” on menus, although I don’t think Chuy’s has it. Plus the Bush daughter incident is always nice for a claim to fame for out of towners.

OMG
Chuys is okay… just OK.
If you want killer Mexican food, either hit El Chile located just east of 35 on Manor, or hit Polvos on south 1st. I’d go with Polvos as El Chile probably won’t be able to accommodate a party that large very easily. They’ll seat you guys outside and the weather that time of year should be perfect. Get the Mexican Martinis and keep em coming, this place isn’t like Trudy’s where you get cut off after 2. Queso is great, ceviche is meh, and the chile rellenos are second to none (I recommend the relleno al nogal).
Late night Magnolia cafe is a must. They cater to the owls and the Mag Mud (their version of queso) is ridiculous.
As mentioned above, both Moonshine (red river and 3rd) and Eastside Cafe (another one on Manor just east of 35) have brunches that will cure any hangover. You will have to wait at both, so be prepared… but it’s worth it. Moonshine is much closer to your hotel and has a better bar, do with that info what you will.
Threadgills needs to learn to use salt when they cook.
Saltlick (BBQ) is absolutely necessary if you can transport everybody 30 minutes south of downtown. Take Mopac south until it dead ends, hang a left. Saltlick will be located in the city limits of Driftwood (not a city), and it’s located on the right hand side… can’t miss it. It’s BYOB and family style, so if you have a bunch of big eaters you will NOT be disappointed. Load up on whiskey and beer, and remember to bring cash (they only take cash and the ATM sometimes is out of order). Roughly $25 a head.
Yellow Rose (N Lamar, right by a Threadgills if you must) and Palazzio (S Congress and Ben White) are the only strip clubs you should consider, but between them its pretty much a coin flip.
I have no idea how old you are, but sixth street is pretty young. You can get by on West Sixth or Fourth a little easier… sixth can be annoying. Not sure what the crowd will be like that weekend as I’m always in Dallas for the OU game. If you’re looking for music, hit all the bars on Red River, running from 9th to 6th streets. Mohawks, Emos, Red Eyed Fly, Club DeVille, Beauty Bar, Side Bar, Red Seven. This is hipster Austin, so be prepared.
During the day there’s a million nice golf courses, you could hit Barton Springs, rent some Kayaks/Canoes on Town Lake… just head outside. Mid October in Austin is a pretty spectacular climate.

I should clarify
my Chuy’s comment. I had a TERRIBLE experience there the last time I went (roughly 1.5 years ago). So bad I don’t really want to go into details, but suffice it to say that it ruined me for there.
That being said, many locals and foreigners really love Chuy’s, as I did at one time. I’m just one man, so me calling it OK shouldn’t be the deciding factor for you and your buddies. Chuy’s (I’m sure you won’t suffer the same plight), Polvo’s and El Chile are all very ‘happenin’. El Chile is a little more expensive and probably not the environment you guys are looking for though.

Mi Madres
Just finished 3 years of Austin, moved back to Dallas this summer. My thoughts on Austin food:
Best Breakfast Tacos: Mi Madres (on Manor just east of 35) (Trudy’s a close second)
Tex-Mex: Matt’s El Rancho, Trudy’s, Polvos, Nuevo Leon (on East side, but fun place) (El Arroyo overrated for sure)
Burgers: Phil’s Ice House (great buns), Crown & Anchor (greasy but delicious), The Tavern, Hut’s
Misc: Salt Lick (though obviously a long way out, well worth it), Iron Works, Moonshine
