Thursday a.m. Rangers stuff

I went to bed before the game was over last night, and thus missed Josh Lewin mentioning Lone Star Ball on the air towards the end of the game.

Lesson:  Never go to sleep.

Jeff Wilson's game story again has Marlon Byrd saying it will take a miracle to get back in the race, even after yesterday's win and Anaheim's loss, which got the Rangers back to 6 1/2 games behind the Angels.

The Rangers aren't sure what is behind Neftali Feliz's recent velocity drop, but don't think it is injury-related.  Also in these notes, Josh Hamilton says he hopes to be DHing this weekend, and Ron Washington lists some guys who are likely headed to winter ball.

There's also a story up on Ian Kinsler and his inconsistency in 2009, with Ron Washington saying that Kinsler's issue this year hasn't been his swing but his pitch selection.  Washington says Kinsler is a great low ball hitter, and when he makes pitchers pitch him low, rather than going after balls that are up, he's much more successful.

Brandon McCarthy is still trying to prove himself, after coming off the d.l. yet again.

Tim Cowlishaw says that the Rangers are better off with Kevin Millwood here in 2010 for $12 million than not.

And Jim Reeves has a column on the development of Ron Washington as a manager, talking about what he has learned and how he has improved since coming on board.

Ideally

it would be nice if everything was done berfore the winters meetings so that the owners could vote then. However, ST is probably the earliest it will get done.

I was thinking the exact same thing this morning after reading Newberg's email.

This is so frustrating because no way this team is able to add anything significant via FA. 2010 may not be the year.

2010

I don’t know why it would doom next season based on the owner. You got to expect added development from alot of the core of your team. Improvements offensively from several young players.

Basically none of our losses in FA are guys who were huge players for us. Plus if we get a new owner at the beginning of next year he may be itching to throw some money at this thing come trade deadline where we can use our surplus of prospects to land a key player or two.

This season has been a nice little valedictory (I hope) for...

…the Byrdman of Arlington. I wish him well in 2010. I just think it should be in another team’s uniform.

I wish I knew more about these guys

Their finances, etc.

My big fear is that a new owner will come in and shake things up too much. All the team really needs right now is an owner with some cash flow.

Ok...they may have enough flow to buy a team

But will they have enough to spend on free agents without bringing up words like “financial flexibility” ?
Hicks obviously had the “cash flow” to buy 50% of Liverpool, and yet he’s in financial trouble.

Hicks had

the borrowing capacity to buy them, anyway. He used precious little of his own cash.

Don't forget the 5 year amortization rule
Jeffrey Loria has had more experience with write-offs than any recent professional sports owner. Owners typically can deduct player contracts for the first four or five years of franchise ownership. Loria purchased a majority share in the Montreal Expos in 1999, but the clock started over again three years later when he sold the Expos and purchased the Florida Marlins.

That is from an espn article. This is also why you see new owners spending like crazy in the first 5 years of ownership…hey, that sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Kinsler's swing

My eyes tell me that he is pulling his head up off the ball when he swings. However, I can see how swinging at low pitches may force him to keep his head down which would lead to better results.

It's nice to see...

Hank go on a tear in his last few games as a Ranger. I just wish he could have done it earlier when it mattered. It will be odd to see him wearing another teams jersey next season.

I like the names that Wash talks about sending to winter ball. However, like Tricer, I do have my concerns with Feliz. If the Rangers can’t explain his drop in velocity, and think fatigue from a new role could be the problem, then perhaps giving him some time off is the best thing. He can pitch “winterball” next April in OKC for a couple months and then come back up to Arlington. I really don’t want the Rangers to fuck this kid up by rushing him. The Rangers need to take their foot off the gas a little with Neftali.

I look for Ian to make some adjustments and have a big year next year. I think he’s stubborn, but I hope someone is able to get through to him so he can become the player that he’s talented enough to be.

He'll get a one year deal

I think. He looks like he might be getting hot at an opportune time, but there are lots of 1B/DH options on the market every year, and teams are not just going to forget his ups, downs, and injuries.

Reaction. My lust for Ollie being a Ranger pitcher was circa 2003, when I believe he was more adaptable (although I’m not sure Connor would have fixed his volatility). And a stupid signing IS a stupid signing, regardless of the player involved.
