Saturday morning Rangers news

Baseball fans and teammates in the dugout cheer as Texas Rangers' Marlon Byrd (22) Ian Kinsler (5) and Craig Gentry (68) walk to the dugout following Kinsler's three run home run off of Tampa Bay Rays' Grant Balfour that scored Gentry and Byrd in the eighth inning of a baseball game, Friday Sept. 25, 2009, in Arlington, Texas. With the home run, Kinsler became the third second baseman in major league history with 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a season. The Rangers won 8-3. (AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez)

A win at the last game I'll attend this season.  That's a positive.

And it was good to see Derek Holland battle without having anything close to his best stuff, and keep the Rangers in the game...during the third, it looked like this was going to be another awful outing for Holland, but he fought through it and righted the ship...

Anthony Andro writes that Ian Kinsler was stuck on 29 homers for a while, but finally broke through last night to become the third second baseman to have a 30/30 season.

Evan Grant writes about Ian Kinsler's 30/30 accomplishment, with Kinsler saying he needs to be more consistent, and that it isn't a great season for him because they don't have rings yet.

Although Josh Hamilton was back yesterday, Michael Young won't be ready to return until the series at Anaheim at the earliest.

And Jim Reeves writes that, despite the late disappointment, this has been a successful season for Texas.

I don’t know what the point of watching him strike-out and hit weak grounders to the right side is for the remaining games. Why would you risk it? For what?

I know you want to finish strong that’s exactly why he shouldn’t be in there.

Seems to me ...

that RHBs have been teeing off on Holland’s inside FB. A scoash more run and those peas miss the barrel of the bat.

by shroomer on Sep 26, 2009 9:57 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i think Holland

throws inside way too much. I think it is a good thing to challenge hitters and back them up but it would be nice if he could develop a cutter for that inside pitch.

At the game

it seemed like Holland only threw about two “sliders” and threw alot of curves. I hope that curve comes along quick because he slider is awful.

Then how come he has stopped throwing it?

he doesn't seem to throw his change for strikes

he is inconsistent with that pitch.

It would seem he has a lot of pitches to work on, and I would throw a cutter in there as well. A cutter is what helped Danks in his second pro season.

I think everybody overreacts and says he's not ready

because…well, we haven’t had the chance to see him play the outfield for only a few times because Wash won’t put him out there. I think his weaker arm is made up by his above avg speed, which gives him the ability to get to more balls in our vast OF.

I agree that Borbon should play CF

but don’t be fooled about that arm. It’s weak. Saw the display of his “hose,” and it was impressive in its weakness – very Pierre-ish. I would guess “working on his throwing technique” means takind advantage of the speed, and using that speed to position himself to cover the most ground.

i think the manager favor s

Byrd and Murphy over Borbon simply because they are veterans, and they make excuses about not playing Borbon…ie-he really needs to work on his transfer or his arm is too weak. There are plenty of CFers that have been successful with below avg strength in their arm

I'll be interested to see if he can maintain this walk rate next year

An 8.9 BB% is the highest he’s ever had at any one stop in his professional career (well, unless you count the one game he played in rookie ball in ‘07 as a “stop”). Really, really encouraging, but I’ll be interested to see if he can maintain that over a full season next year (and he needs to, because he’s not gonna hit .325 over a full season). If he can maintain or even build on that then heck yeah he’s your leadoff guy, but if he backslides…

What makes you think he wont hit .325?

Hes gonna get alot of those little fluke hits. Infield grounders guys fumble cause of his speed, bunt singles, bloopers, etc. He has the type of approach that will get him those type of hits which will bring his average up to the .320 range.

I think we can expect .280 - .300

that is a possibility, but of course there is a possibility that he hits for less. it’s a tough thing to call, but we get overly optimistic in the offseason and completely pessimistic at the first sign of struggle. we may overreact a little….just a little.

Davis made Davis' season such a disapointment

Even if we had only expected .240/.320/.480 it would have been a disapointment.

Borbons skillset is not as susceptible IMO to a season long slump. Because while he may go into a slump not getting line drive base hits he will still have his speed which will get him on base.

30 30 guys

Kinsler’s fellow 30/30 guys that had comparable avg/obp/slg ops+ numbers

2009 Kinsler age 27 2b, 4th season
30 HR, 30 SB .250/.322/.484/.806 109 OPS + (so far, and has missed 18 games)

1987 Joe Carter age 27 1b/OF, 5th season
32 HR, 31 SB .264/.304/.480/.784 104 OPS + (missed 13 games)

1993 Sammy Sosa age 24 OF, 4th Season
33 HR, 36 SB .261/.309/.485/.794 111 OPS + (missed 3 games)

1999 Raul Mondesi age 28 OF, 7th Season
33 HR, 36 SB .253/.332/.483/.815 108 OPS + (missed 3 games)

2000 Preston Wilson age 25 OF 2nd season
31 HR, 36 SB .264/.331/.486/.817 109 OPS + (missed 1 game)

Joe Carter went on to play another 11 seasons driving in 100 more often then not. an average hitting fielder that made 5 all star teams. would probably be a member of the hall of very good due to power numbers and longevity. word on the street is that he had a pretty decent world series in 1993.

Sammy Sosa didn’t become the beloved hated non english speaking corked bat using guy until 1998.

Mondesi was always a guy I thought was underrated.. after 1999 he sort of fell apart. he could have been a 300/300 guy, I guess injuries took care of that.

Preston Wilson struck out a lot. Last full season in MLB was age 31. Never stole more than 20 bases again.

This gives me hope towards the future
“We have to recognize that this is team and not individuals. Sometimes guys were thinking about RBIs and hitting home runs when all you have to do is make contact. To be a winner, to be successful, you have to recognize that.”

Washington continually points to teams like the Angels, Red Sox, Yankees and even the Tigers as those who seem to understand that concept.

“In situations you can see them give themselves up and that’s one thing we have to make our kids understand as we move forward. That’s baseball,” he said. "If you don’t do that, you’re not going to beat good pitchers.

“When you face good pitching, you have to have those fundamentals, you have to be able to scratch out that run without a base hit, you have to move that guy when you get him on second with nobody out. You have to do those things, because there’s not going to be a lot of runs scored.”

so that was Wash?

does he say this to the players. and if so, did they not listen the entire season or did he just realize this. I think Wash may have just come to this realization because everything he said during the season was more like “They do what they do, and I want them to do the best at what they do.” Basically, they strikeout and don’t execute fundamental baseball. Yet, now he mentions this. Ridiculous!

UTEP is shitting themselves vs TU.

It doesn’t help when the Refs are influenced by the Home Crowd.

I didn't realize they were playing Tulane.

I thought they were playing Texas.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

I prefer to call them TU.

not to confuse them with The University of Tennessee. The Real UT.

So Volunteers= UT Longhorns=TU

I think it's phenomenally stupid.

What do you call Oklahoma State? SOU? And Oregon State?

Does Tulane get bumped to TulU ? There’s 120+ Division 1 football teams, they all need to have different initials?

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
