Given that he’s yet to hit as well as a catcher should hit in AAA, I’d be loathe to make him an every day major league DH right now.

I don’t think Pudge is a better option at catcher than Salty.

salty
.233 / .290 / .371 this year
.251 / .314 / .389 for his career
at what point do we decide he just isn’t a ML starter?

after his second full season behind the plate
This season they asked him to focus on becoming better defensively, so it’s conceivable that his offense suffered as a result. Once he’s more comfortable defensively, look for his bat to improve..
I have a hard time believing that a professional athlete can't improve in more than one area at any given time.
If they tell him to improve his offense next season, is his defense going to regress? Are we going to be playing this game for the rest of his career, that he can only be serviceable at one thing at a time?

catching is a much more demanding position
than any other while off the field. Defensively you have to do the scouting on the opposing batters and work up a gameplan with each pitcher. Then offensively you have to go over the same scouting and tapes for your own batting to work through any problems you might have. Salty was also still learning many of the intricacies of the position this year.
That being said, he has had time to adjust this year, and while I think you can expect a better year offensively as he better learns how to manage a pitching staff, if he doesn’t improve by next year, then I think you can say that’s all you’ll get out of him.
you didn't get the memo
that apparently Nelson Cruz sucks and could never bat as high as 5th.
I thought it be all warm and shitty, but it just tasted like normal beer. It was still cold.

Cruz is in a 4-for-30 slump.
Asked to evaluate Cruz, Washington said he sees a player with a lot more maturity, but one who still has a some distance to go.
"I’ve seen his focus fade a little bit," Washington said. "It’s been a good lesson for him."

Maybe
But he’s never hit many line drive, and he’s hitting a career low in them this year.
2007 was an aberrition, power-wise – his ISO’s haven’t been anywhere near his 2007 levels any other time in his career, so I don’t know why he’d be out there tying to recapture that though.

Aside from the LD/FB rates, the biggest difference from this year to last year seems to be the drop in his walk rate
15% to 8.9%. He’s also swinging at more stuff out of the zone than ever before (although he was horrible at swinging and missing at stuff out of the zone in 2007 as well). Couldn’t tell you whether that’s part of why he sucks or a product of him sucking, but bottom line is he’s not squaring the ball up and his approach has suffered this year.

Here's the rule on earned runs for relievers
Regardless of whether the third out would’ve been made, the reliever starts with a clean slate with the runners he faces. O’Day walked Longoria, so he is a potential earned run, which he became when he scored without benefit of an error
Thanks

Epic meltdown in this game. Epicly epic.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.
If this where happening to any other team, it would be pretty funny
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock
Playoff teams have comebacks
They do not let teams come back against them. When losing after the 6th inning, we have not come back to win since July 2nd.

PH Josh for Teagarden to start the inning.
Replace him with Pudge if you can get to the tenth.

I doubt the Flailmaster 3000 can do anything Teagarden can't, actually

this has been really annoying
the only thing that was hit hard was the damn error that started it all
Baseball Prospectus said before this season
that bullpen management was Wash’s weakest aspect as a manager.
All season long we’ve watched him F up the bully and just when you think there’s a chance for This Thing, that just happened.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
Get the F out of town Washington
Lets wait til we completely melt down to take Frankie out. 5-0 lead with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th and still can’t bring it home. Screw this manager.
you stick with your closer
as long as you have the lead.
So how he looks when he's pitching has absolutely nothing to do with it?
He can be throwing meatballs out there, or not getting the ball across the plate, but as long as you’re winning to go with him?
Fuck that shit.

Normally I tend to agree
But when you have a weapon like Feliz out there (and he’s had adequate time to warm) use it.

Shouldn't be any differerent with the closer than with any other pitcher
If he’s not having a good day, you take him out.

ok, not in all cases
but for the most part frankie has been nails this year. he hasn’t given up a run in 6 games. you stick with him with a 6-4 lead. there is no issue with how wash has handled the bullpen in this situation IMO. just a bunch of bs seeing eye singles, not much you can do.
No, you don't
Not when he’s not throwing strikes, has loaded up the bases and allowed a run to score.

so you go with feliz?
he hasn’t been very good lately either.
When FF is off he's REALLY off
We’ve seen it a couple of times this year.

He sort of has a point.

Davis isn't a third baseman.
This is the risk you take playing him over there to get Josey’s precious Blalock in the lineup. So if Josey’s bitching about Davis’s error, I have no idea why.
