Bobby V would be my first choice. Also like Mike Hargrove who wants back in as a manager. I also like Tony Pena, he wasn’t ready (like Wash) when he took the Royals but I think he has learned a lot at NY.

well he managed the Mets more recently than the did the Rangers...

and in a recent poll of 5000 Mets fans 97% of them had a favorable opinion of him and t would like him back. They absolutely love him in Japan.

Maybe these 97% didn’t get the memo that he sucks even though he managed there more recently?

at least 3 or 4

A good manager? You mean one who time and time again didn’t leave guys out there too long to lose leads? Knew how to do a proper line up card and made defensive substitutions when necessary?
I’m not saying he doesn’t bring some good things to the table but these are crucial decisions that cost you games and have cost games this year. We’ve had this discussion about games like tonight numerous times this year.

…the impact of a manager on a team’s win/loss record.

by Adam J. Morris on Sep 27, 2009 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's hard to determine the impact of in-game decisions

I think if he had filled in a “optimal” lineup card every day, that would have had more impact on our record than his in-game decisions.

"What ... 92 miles per hour?" Feldman scoffed. "That's not gas. Feliz throws gas."

by NorCalRangersFan on Sep 27, 2009 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

his in-game decision sure were questionable today

you have a starter rolling, only at 97 pitches and you pull him out, then give 2 relievers quick hooks when they didn’t get a guy out. Then in the 9th, when Feliz was warmed up already watching to see if he would get the call to enter the game, Wash continues to let Francisco pitch, who had already given up a run and loaded the bases with 1 out. FX2 should have been out right there. I think Wash was guilty of taking guys out too early and leaving a guy in too long. He is also guilty for letting Jones bat in the 9th. That is the perfect situation for Borbon. I know Borbon hit later in the inning but there is a different mindset when there are two outs. Borbon could even lay down a bunt and possibly steal a base as a leadoff in the inning. Stupid managing cost us this game. I was at the game cheering, and I left astounded.

This game mirrors our season. We started out well, fizzled a little bit, held on near the end, then fell apart. Sianara.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

I think with any manager most of that stuff tends to even out with the stuff they get right/get lucky on.

I think 2-3 wins is probably the biggest difference in your overall W/L a manager can make, which is why the teams record isn’t a terribly good way to judge the manager. It’s what he does or doesn’t do in significant sitatutions like today (or like Joe Maddon in the postseason last year) that can be telling.

Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

i would venture a bet to say

that Mike Soscia, one of the best managers around, is a VERY big reason why the Angels win almost every year. I think people underestimate a managers influence on a game. Basically, the consensus would say that the Angels would have been this successful if Trey Hillman was running their team instead of Mike Soscia. That’s a load of BS. ….. and don’t give me that payroll BS either.

Anyone catch Barnett during the postgame on FSSW?

As much as I hate him on the radio I will at least give him credit for straying from the normal TV broadcast team script of pumping out the sunshine and lollipops. First he questioned Washington leaving Davis at third for the eighth. Then he said it has been a season of learning, perhaps even for the manager. I expected TAG to grab him by the shoulders and scream, “what are you saying!?!?! Don’t you know they’re listening!?!?!”

I have no objection to man walking on the moon.

Remember when FF used to be absolutely money?

Frank was dominant to start the season, then go hurt or sick or whatever and hasn’t been the same since.

He’s failed in some spectacular ways this year. For me the Boston game springs to mind right away.

RP performance is super hard to forecast, but I think you design next year’s bullpen based on what you think Francisco is going to be like next year.

So the questions are: is this guy okay and what are your expectations for next year?

by alon91 on Sep 27, 2009 5:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think he's fine

He had a bad day today, but so did O’Day and CJ.

Considering his health issues and some of the questionable useage Ron has put his arm through this year, I think Frankie has performed well enough overall to retain the closers job next year, but if he falters in spring training I’d expect CJ to be right in that mix too. Really I think they could both share the job and probably should, based on expected lefty/righty matchups in the late innings.

One of Ron’s weaknesses is his hard on for veterans. There is no reason Vizquel should not have been in the game in the 8th inning to replace CD at 3B.

what they were saying on the radio

was that Ron had left Blalock in there in case his spot came up in the bottom half of the 8th. Not even considering how pitiful Blalock is at the plate, its a freakin 5 run game! You don’t need more runs at that point. Ron has to get his best defense in the game.

Ron Washington committed a fireable offense today in the 8th and 9th.

If any other manager in any other town did what Ron Washington did, there would be loud calls for his head.

Ridiculous. I’m sick that I went out there to watch Washington murder the slim remaining playoff chances.

I try to keep an open mind

And on the positive side of critique. But just once, and maybe he did this, I’d like for Wash to say “this one’s on me, I took some chances that didn’t work out”. But a bullpen that can’t hold onto a 5-0 lead with two outs in the 8th inning trumps whatever Wash did or didn’t do.

All we truly know is that the bullpen blew it. You can’t really disagree with Wash rolling with his three best bp options in O’Day, DJ and FF. Granted, he could have brought in Neftali for FF but hey, that wasn’t a criminal mistake. Those guys should have performed but they didn’t and that happens too.

I laughed pretty hard at MetsBlog being proof of Bobby-V being a good manager.

No offense ment to LAMF. I just have a good history of using that blog as the pinnacle of how stupid a sports-related website can be, and it was perfectly hilarious, like a sit-com.

oh I'm not offended in the slightest..

There were tons of links and articles praising Bobby Valentine and his managerial skills. That was just one of the firsts one I came across.

It’s difficult to take anyone seriously who makes a blanket statement about a teams fanbase being ignorant when they really don’t know the fans that well. Metsblog may not be the best source but as a former New Yorker I can promise you that New York sports fans are not ignorant.

HH is that a sock in your puppet or are you happy to see me?

by BigGuns on Sep 27, 2009 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There are, in fact, some intelligent Mets fans places like Amazin Avenue.

That said, MetsBlog is not just “not the best.” It is, without a doubt, the single least intelligent baseball community I have ever come across on the internet.

As far as the Mets fans I’ve come across on the internet in general, they may not be the most ignorant I’ve seen in general, but they’re probably up there. At least the ones that wander on to their computers to talk about sports, I definitely don’t think of New York as the shining center of sports knowledge. I don’t find many fan bases or regions to be that bright, though, other than (like LSB or AA) isolated pockets, so it doesn’t make NYC that unique, either.

by philkid3 on Sep 28, 2009 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know who you've run across on the internet..

but I’ve met many Mets fans personally who are great and knowledgeable fans including my friend Kenny who is the city sports commissioner. They are just as bright and in touch with the scene as any sports fans in the country. To make a blanket statment about 5000 people that you know absolutely nothing about is silly. I’m pretty sure that just about any poll of Mets fans would come back with a pretty damn favorable rating of Valentine maybe not 97 percent but it would be up there. I lived there when he managed, watched a lot of their games and I know the fans loved him and still do and they are NOT all idiots.

Washington doesn't take his own defensive substitution advice...from only a week ago.

“Washington said he considered pulling Blalock in the ninth, moving Davis to first (here he has played excellent defense) and inserting Vizquel at third. "But I trust Hank," he said. "I like Chris over there at third although Vizquel is better. It was a trust thing." And would he handle it differently down the road, given what happened in the ninth? "Yes, I would," he said.

Pulled Blalock, moved Davis to first, Vizquel in at third. You could argue he should have done it an inning earlier, but he didn’t fail to follow his own stated opinion/lesson learned there.

I was very relieved to see Tampa come back to tie and then take the game. That kind of got us off the hook because now we need to just win one game. Trust me the fans here were starting to get nervous. That must have been tough for Rangers fans today.

As detailed here, I unearthed an old VHS tape loaded with some cool KXTK 39 segments from the ‘99 season, some long lost SportsCenter bits (when Rich Eisen was still around and it was an entertaining show), and the final outs and resultant stadium/clubhouse bedlam from the pennant-clinching game in ’99.
