Monday morning Rangers things
First of all, I want to say one thing...the Colts had a player supposedly named Pierre Garcon playing for them last night. That name sounds made up. And not only does it sound made up, it sounds like it was made up by a 12 year old.
Anyway...
Jeff Wilson writes that the Rangers' playoff chances are just about dead, in the wake of yesterday's collapse by the three relievers who have been the best for Texas this year.
Ron Washington probably should have had Omar Vizquel in the game at third base instead of Chris Davis, with the Rangers up 5-0 in the 8th, and Davis made the error that started the collapse. And Washington probably should have pulled Frankie Francisco once he loaded up the bases with one out and a 6-4 lead, since it was clear Frankie didn't have it yesterday. And he should have hit Josh Hamilton for Andruw Jones.
But at the end of the day, the manager didn't blow this game...the bullpen did. To rail about how this is another example of managerial stupidity is to miss the point...with the game on the line, Washington went to his best relievers, and every one of them failed.
Michael Young expects to be in the lineup tonight, and with the Rangers now having finished out their home dates, they officially averaged more than 3000 per game more than they did in 2008, which is the biggest jump in the majors this year.

I contend that the Rangers win yesterday
if Vizquel is at 3B in the 8th instead of Davis. However, we will never know if I am right or not. We do know that Ron didn’t give his team the best chance to win yesterday. So Ron and the team’s three best relievers didn’t get the job done.

I'm actually not too upset about it at this point in the season.
Then again, if Wash can’t correct these kinds of things next year, we might be in some trouble.

I'm not heartbroken about this loss
Not that it wasn’t a pretty crappy loss.
The thing I’m most annoyed about is that unless the Rangers sweep the Angels, they’ll have to sit and watch the Angels celebrate clinching. And if that happens I fully expect at least one “get the fuck off our field”.
Come to think of it, a brawl might be pretty entertaining.

One of the nice things about this Rangers team...
..they seem to hate the Angels almost as much as we do.

I'm debating on whether to drive up to the Big A for one of these games
I don’t think I could stomach seeing them clinch in person. And that rally monkey jumping around…. the thought is making my stomach churn right now.
The possibility of a brawl is enticing, however. It’d be great if they could get one of the Angels suspended going into the playoffs… hehe. But then again, Padilla is no longer on the team, and he was really the one guy you could bet on starting something.
Go Rice Owls!
Wait, so...
…so there might be a correlation between winning and attendance? Weird.
I do find it interesting that for a community that is pretty stat savvy, there is so much railing against the manager. Some of it I agree with (I think overuse caused Frank’s injury earlier in the year). However, one of the things that stats suggest is that managers don’t make that much of a difference. Most of it is because there’s not as much tactics involved compared to a game like football.
Part of me, though, wonders if it isn’t because most managers follow the book on their decisions so you would expect a lot of them to make the same frustrating calls that Wash did yesterday. Anyways, if you disagree with his in game decisions, at least remember that sticking with guys too long frustrates us but helps build the confidence of his players.

I think...
with a 5 run lead, you get your best defensive alignment on the field. Eric (I think) suggested that Wash wanted to get Hank F one more AB and that’s why the move hadn’t been made. In a 5 run must-win game… most managers that follow the book would have put his best D on the field.
With a 5 run lead and your starter still in the game
You don’t worry about one defensive miscue leading to the opening of the floodgates. If its a one run game then yes you do but a 5 run lead should be big enough to overcome one mistake. Especially with the back end of your bullpen fully rested.
The simple fact is the bullpen blew the game yesterday. End of story. It sucks but if ODay, CJ, and Frankie can’t close down a 5 run game with 4 outs to go because of 1 error then we don’t deserve to be in the playoffs in the first place

He didn't want to pull Hank out of the lineup
Because they had the heart of their order due up.

meaningful September games and the chance to check playoff odds and scoreboard watch a little
It was fun to experience those things this year for the first time in a long time.
Still it feels like the team sorta collapsed down the stretch, and there are certainly no guarantees that next year’s team will be any better. It doesn’t always work that way. Having said that, I’m excited about next year already – and who knows if we might have a big trade or two to chew on this winter.

Yes times 100
Some us are burning with disappointment right now, but this is the best season we have enjoyed since ’99. 2004 was great too, but that was a house of cards, and ’09 has such a strong foundation of youth & talent you would be silly not to be very excited.

2004 was not a house of cards.
The follow up teams fell apart because the owner got greedy and then he hired a dumbass to run it when Hart resigned.
The Ranger farm system in the summer of 2004 was busting with some very nice pieces.
I don’t see anything as good as Adrian Gonzales or Ian Kinsler in this present system. Follow those two up with Danks, Feldman, CYoung and Wilson and you have quite a little system brewing.

Andrus is in The Show.

so no, Smoak is not his equal.

I like Smoak and think he has a nice chance
to be a good major league player but AG is a borderline superstar in The Show.
Smoak hasn’t demonstrated the ability to do this just yet.

Fuck it wasn't a house of cards
2004 was based on a “bully” that couldn’t sustain itself. Main guys had ERA+s of 237, 136, 198, 290, 152 and 184. For Christ’s sake Brian Shouse was integral.
Now, looking at young-ish players, I spy Teix (24), Hank (23) Laynce Nix (23) and Adrian Gonzalez (22). Hell, I’ll take Elvis, Borbon, Smoak, maybe CD, Neftali and Holland 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
Hamilton
That’s the one thing that struck me as odd at the game.
Final home game and Hamilton hit well the night before, so why not hit hamilton for jones
when jones hasn’t done much of late and was flying out.
On a sidenote I’m curious why young is available tonight but couldn’t pinch hit yesterday

1. Jones got that AB because the gut say “AJ do what he do, and if what he do is make an out at least it’s a veteran out”.
2. MY knew he would be capable of not only hitting but playing third after one more night’s sleep. That’s the difference between ordinary ballplayers and leaders. The leaders know the exact moment when they will transition from “unavailable” to “ready to play in the field”. And they know it 36 hours ahead of time.

MY was able to pinch hit yesterday
He didn’t feel comfortable playing the field however. I figured the Rangers should have pinch ran Borbon for Davis once Davis drew the walk in the 9th. With a new catcher behind the plate I would have put Borbon on the bases and pinch hit Young for Teagarden. Let Borbon steal 2nd then Face can drive him in with a single.

They are probably being very careful with Josh's back
Back injuries recur quite easily. He may not have been available. I would guess that if he was even a little stiff or sore he would not be used.

So
with the game on the line, Washington went to his best relievers, and every one of them failed.
Maybe someone could post a fail jpg featuring three failures?

The book "Outliers" talks about the causes of
airplane crashes. Typically it is not one mistake that causes a crash but anywhere from 5-7 mistakes in a row that happen and if conditions are ripe (or you have bad luck) the plane will go down.
Korean Airlines used to be one of the least safe airlines . Quite often, mistakes happen because there is a communication caste system and underlings are afraid to speak up to the pilot when he is making a blatant mistake. Sometimes the crew can’t communicate properly with the tower as well.
Reconstruct what happened yesterday. There was a confluence of many things that the players, pitchers and manager did wrong yesterday (with a little bad luck thrown in) and that’s how you blow a 5-0 lead in the 8th inning of the most important game of the year and crash.
All year long this team has tried to outrun the incompetency of their manager and it caught them yesterday.

Borbon should have hit for Jones to start the inning and Hamilton for TT. Not that it really matters much.
The ’pen really let the Rangers down yesterday.

also let the Rangers down yesterday.

Same old Boneheaded moves by Wash
A child could manage better, i figured Ham must be injured since he did not PH for AJ and then there are the defense upgrades (or lack of) the guy confuses the heck out of me with his managing of this team.
Larry Parrish Was Da Man!
Stealing third base with two outs that was one of the dumbest moves I have ever seen a baseball manager do Also if you looked at the box scores the next morning you could see the Ray manager pulled out all the stops to win with lots of substitutions.
No RW he left that fat clown ANDRUW JONES in even though he is batting 154. Borbon should have hit for Jones Hamilton for Teagarden and then maybe we would have some speed on the base paths.
