Bellamy-city

Hey avid EPL fanz - need your help.

I've never followed any pro soccer team except the old NASL Tornadoes when I was a tyke. With p2p however, it makes it pretty easy to see tons of matches and follow a particular club. So, I'm gonna pick a team.

It's my boy Noel Gallagher's fav team and I've already watched 2 or 3 of their matches this season and find them fun to watch. It's Manchester City.

They have several fast rangey relentless players like Petrov and WP. Tevez is ugly but productive. Adebayor is kinda nutty but dangerous. Their goalie looks pretty solid. But it's this Bellamy guy who I really enjoy. Dude is pretty firey and brings lots of speedy danger in his game.

First off - any other Man City fanz here? I figure I need some links to MC fan sites and forums and newsletters if I really want to learn about what they're doing. Read the local press - that sorta thing. Any hints from you guys about the best websites to get started with? Thx.

Also, what do you guys thing of the team I picked? Any HSO's from my new enemy fellow EPL fanz?

Now see ...

I don’t get that. Matriculate my azz, Z. I’m a newb here. Is that just like a fan reaction? Or have I picked a lousy franchise that’s run by former ACORN employees or something? And who do you pull for anyhow? Whoever it is … I hate ’em. And I hate you for not hating them, too, whoever they are. And my hate will only grow and grow when you finally tell me who they are that I now hate so passionately.

I like Arsenal. Which is to say that I like to watch the actual sport, not constant 60 yard hail mary attempts and brutal pressing, and I like to see a team built, not bought. :)

Seriously though, on City, it’s kind of like deciding to be a Yankees fan if they had no history but just the $300M payroll. If I were choosing a team to follow I don’t think I’d want to have to root for a team that just went out with blank checks and started offering guys who were under contract double their salaries to come to a new team made up purely of mercenaries. It’s like Chelski earlier this decade except worse. Micah Richards is cool, but the rest of them are just mercenaries who would have never gone there if their wages weren’t literally double what anyone else would pay them. I’m not saying that if I were a player I wouldn’t go to work there, just that I wouldn’t choose that as the team to root for. As far as the organization, ask Kaka what he found out about that. And last, Mark Hughes is a doofus.

Also, sort of like someone would have said about the Cowboys (because of Terrell Owens) for the last few years, I really don’t know how anyone could root for Adebayor. I know I didn’t when he was at Arsenal. He is a sleezeball. I didn’t like the timing of him leaving because they wanted to challenge for the title this year, but I certainly wasn’t sad to see his act gone.

I'm not a Man City fan

but I am a Noel Gallagher fan.

I’m not a HUGE EPL fan, I do watch the occasional match every now and then. The one team that I was really a fan of was relegated and no longer in the EPL. I haven’t seen a Man City match I just might have to go and watch a couple and see what I think. As far as their crosstown rival I don’t particularly like Man U, but that’s mostly because it seems like everybody and their dog are Man U fans. I do like Chelsea and I’ll watch Liverpool if they’re on but for the most part I don’t watch many EPL matches.

You just don't sit in a rocking chair, when you've built a revolution.

I'm ignorant as the driven snow. Or pure as ... or untainted by EPL knowledge maybe.

Noel constantly refers to them so I figure you just gotta pick a team randomly and learn the league and develop some bad blood for your rivals … like that crappy team that Z likes. Whoever they are.

In all seriousness

I’m glad you took up a team. I think it’s one of the most entertaining things to follow right now, a lot of fascinating angles to the league and the sport, and I think it helps to have a team that you really associate with. I know that I got way more interested in soccer when I started sort of organically caring whether Arsenal won.

Why did you choose Arsenal?

Baseball’s over and the EPL’s just starting so I thought the timing was perfect to finally take the plunge and see what the attraction to following the EPL is all about. I chose MC out of a hat almost – just happened to catch a few of their games over the last coupla weeks and figured they were sufficiently talented to hold my interest and promote my curiosity.

I didn’t want to just glom onto one of the heavyweights like ManU, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal so I picked what I thought was a mediocre but popular franchise. But things musta changed for MC, huh? Where did all this recent money come from to buy these players? New owner or something?

Man, I got lots to learn and lots of catch up to do. Guess I need to research their recent history. The way you describe them above kinda reminds me of the Orioles after Angelos bought them. Fair take?

by shroomer on Sep 28, 2009 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah he’s actually a trillionaire: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mansour_bin_Zayed_Al_Nahyan

He’s been on a mission to make them one of the big teams and has just tried to buy anything out there that looks like a good fantasy piece. Kaka was supposed to be a done deal last year until he backed out, reportedly after getting a feel for the fact that it was really kind of a small time organization with just a huge influx of money. He went after every big name and came out with just Robinho (not a bad consolation prize though), then set out buying up EPL stars this summer. Hughes replaced most of the starting lineup with these guys by literally paying around 170% to double what these guys’ established transfer value was and then instituting sort of a standard "double your wages" policy that is what I think finally got them Adebayor and Lescott. The whole Lescott episode was the sorriest one from my pov. They just wouldn’t leave it alone, even after the season had started, and they completely screwed up Everton in the process.

Angelos is fair, and Hicks when he first bought the Rangers isn’t a terrible example either, except that it’s just to a much higher degree than either of those two went to. Money is very literally no object for the Sheikh, and it’s the only reason they’re making any of the moves they are.

by Brett Perryman on Sep 28, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will say

Adebayor aside, the other guys they’ve brought in are decent enough, and it is at the least an interesting plot to follow. They are probably the only club with a realistic shot at making the big four a big five. Aston Villa and Everton and Tottenham could sneak in there one year if the stars align and should be in the upper half of the table most years, but none of them really have the ability to consistently put the talent out there to make the leap and play consistently in the Champions League.

The problem is, so what if they’re successful? What does it prove? That if a near-trillionaire buys your team and says he’ll lose millions and millions every year, you can eventually be competitive. Well, duh.

Thx for all the info. Looking forward to learning lots. We won 3-1 this afternoon, btw.

Yup, there’s really no comparison in American sports. The amount of money that City have at their disposal (and are willing to use) is frightening. Only Real can compare and Perez has to borrow to fund his deals.

As for the Arsenal part

It had a lot to do with Arsene Wenger. Rivals will obviously tell a different story, but I find him to be a fascinating figure, and he is one of the unique guys in coaching/management in the last century to me. He has money but won’t spend it, because he’s committed (many think way too much so) to a building project that he’s been working on for a few years. He has a good eye for talent, and he demands a very attractive style of play.

When I started watching EPL, I didn’t really know what was going on and mostly paid attention to names that I recognized, like Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry and other big international stars like that. Henry was a lot of fun to watch and I watched some Arsenal games, learned more about Wenger and the team. Anyone who knows me and knows that sport could easily guess what club I’d be drawn to. I’m just surprised that more casual soccer fans (with no prior connections) who enjoy the player development side of the game and would presumably be drawn to the skill and offensively oriented style don’t wind up following them, at least while Wenger’s still there. It’s different for folks who have followed it their whole lives, because Arsenal as an entity used to be completely different, boring, very English, etc.

Speaking of websites

I saw that Arsenal finally opened up their US version of their official site. I can’t believe it took this long. I’ve noticed that several of the big European clubs have US versions, though I think that AC Milan’s just takes you to a store – tells you what they think of us.

Milan

Just a guess, but I doubt they have enough of a presence (in comparison with the top EPL teams or Real/Barca) in the US for them to make a concerted effort at doing anything like that. That or they’re just lazy.

Talk about a team in shambles though…yikes.

Craig Bellamy was “No-Neck” when he played with us.

I find it a bit confusing about why the MC official site wouldn’t list every game they play at their ‘fixtures’ link. I guess this is why I need to lurk the MC fan forum everyday so I can keep up with what’s around the corner and not miss a game.

BTW, how does a team qualify for the Champions League? Is it based on its position in the standings?

by shroomer on Sep 29, 2009 7:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep that's City for you

They even have their already played Carling Cup matches on there but just haven’t gotten around to adding the upcoming one.

CL is based on standings from the previous season. Top three in England make it, fourth place has to play a play-in round like Arsenal did this year against Celtic (which is where all the Eduardo diving controversy came from).

by Brett Perryman on Sep 29, 2009 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay

It makes sense now, what I read in this article about MC’s apparent challenge to the big 4 this season. If they finish top 3 then they’d qualify for the CC. I figured it was something like that.

Yeah, I finally sussed out that the official site is slow to be updated on some things – like the fixtures and the latest game highlights. They got the post-game interviews up quick enough though – odd that.

I tell you what, if I had realized that it was Arsenal that Dennis Bergkamp used to play for I mighta chosen them instead of MC to follow. I used to love watching that guy. But since I didn’t … go Olympiacos Piraeus!

Okay - I'm getting into this

I’ve been researching City and I’m getting pumped about the next match against Villa on Monday. It’s pretty fun to ponder the health/form of various players and try to guess the coming lineups and strategery. I’d say the mood of the fans is expectant more than hopeful – a few victories in a row and they think they might just be a top squad. A coupla October losses tho and it feels like their confidence would collapse HARD. poof

City has this 21-yr-old kid named Michael Johnson who has been hurt for two years but is finally healthy and back in the midfield mix. His ceiling was supposed to be Gerrard-esque – a nat’l team player and all that, but then all the injuries occured. Have y’all ever heard of him? Is the stuff I’m reading about his quality accurate IYO?

Robinho’s got a hairline fracture and is out for 3 weeks, but speculation has it that since Petrov and Bellamy are rockin’ he might have to earn his spot back. Then they’ll soon have Ade, Tevez and RSC all available for just 2 poacher spots. Heady prob tho.

I wanted to ask you guys about this Nigel De Jong dude. The City fans swear by him as an invaluable “holder” at midfield. Does he do anything special for you guys? Also, Gareth Barry seems a little plodding to me – is he anything special?

I watched the ManU game today. That Anderson guy drove me nuts – seemed like a real weak link to me. Liam – does he jazz you much? Maybe just had a bad game? BTW, I started watching just as Michael Owen got yanked. Do you know why they yanked him? Berbatov was dominant off the bench, tho.

Lotsa fun so far. This sheik guy seems to have really raised the hopes of City fans. I’m even thinking of turning muslim to establish an honest loyalty to the home side.

Assalamu ’alaykum, bitches.

Robinho will get his spot back as soon as he regains fitness.

De Jong’s invaluable in the sense that City need 2 CDMs because the rest of their midfielders/forwards don’t track back for shit usually. As far as how good he is…I don’t watch City enough to give an informed opinion. Barry’s nothing special but he does his job capably, which is all you’re really asking out of a guy like him.

As far as Anderson goes, he and Nani are the two most frustrating players on the team. They flash the potential to be among the best in the world at their positions, but are so inconsistent that it hardly seems worth it sometimes. I didn’t think he performed too badly tonight. Owen was subbed because he aggravated a groin injury…Berbatov was ridiculously good in the first half.

Lotsa fun so far. This sheik guy seems to have really raised the hopes of City fans.

That’s generally what happens when you invest eleventy billion dollars into the squad.

Abu Dhabi dabba doo, Jack

Robinho – yeah, the press is just trying to raise conflict. I’ve been amazed about how sensationalized the English EPL press is. Hughes will just say something like, “It’s good to see Santa Cruz make his debut and we look forward to big things from him.” and the press will write 15 breathless articles about Hughes’ fervant belief in RSC as a lynchpin for the team’s success, blah blah blah.

You guys bag on the City defense but their goals against is pretty decent considering 4 came in one game against the top team ManU. Is it just a historical given about the City defense that they suck or something? I do see how tho’, with Bellamy, Robinho and Petrov on wings, you really are only defending with 6 men most often. [BTW, from what I’m learning, Bellamy’s recent run of play is possibly the best of his career, so it seems I might have just fallen in love with a spike on his graph.]

Y’all squawk about the money infusion artificially raising City’s threat, but it makes for an interesting watch for a noob like me. So many new decent players to blend together in search of a consistent, successful brand of play. The EPL is kinda like F1 racing tho, in that if you lag behind by having a bad month there really isn’t any passing to be found later considering the quality of teams at the top. Pressure’s on to win win win and not lose pace with the thoroughbreds. But I’m so new I’m kinda of still a fan of every team still, just putting the emphasis on City just for the heck of it.

It’s win-win for me no matter who wins. Except for Arsenal. They suck and I hate them.

Transfers, transfer fees - all that mess ...

Don’t understand how it works. Maybe I’ll look around for a FAQ about it. It sounds like I have some time before the trading season arrives to research how all that works.

by shroomer on Sep 30, 2009 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Transfers

A player under professional contract with a team can only be transferred during transfer windows (January and the offseason for the EPL). When a contracted player is transferred, the selling club essentially terminates that player’s contract, allowing him to switch clubs. The transfer fee is the payment to the selling club for terminating said contract.

Players who aren’t under contract are FA’s, which works about the same way as it does over here (minus compensation and all that jazz).

Youth contracts are complicated as hell.

A United forum I frequent attempted to start a rumor about Kaka asking for a move to United in the summer 2008 window (Berbatov aside it was a pretty boring time). A guy basically created a fake website, on which he put a bunch of fake quotes from Kaka talking about how he wanted to join United since he was a child, etc. etc. Long story short, the rumor ended up being mentioned in several “reputable” websites (SSN for one) and was also published in one newspaper IIRC.

Something similar happened this summer, when some no name Russian “website” posted a quote from a Lyon player saying that Benzema had joined United. The rumor made it’s way around the news outlets (SSN, BBC) until the Lyon player had to announce that he said no such thing. A couple of days later, Benzema signed for Real.

Bellamy and Barry

He will frustrate you eventually. Just wait- he’ll have a string of games where he can’t buy a goal, and he’ll spend half the match chasing the ref around the pitch and yelling at them. It’s what he does.

When he played for Liverpool, he and John Arne Riise (former left back, now with Roma) reportedly got in a fight the week of a Champions League match against Barcelona. Bellamy supposedly hit Riise with a golf club. Liverpool then went out and won 2-1 in Barcelona, with Bellamy and Riise scoring the goals. When Bellamy scored, he mimicked a golf swing in celebration.

Barry isn’t a great player, but he’s very solid, well above-average at free kicks and penalties, and he can play anywhere on the left side as well as central midfield.

As for the English press, the crap City gets is nothing compared to the garbage they make up about Liverpool. All of the Big Four get a lot of unnecessary crap thrown their way, but I’m convinced the press has it out for my club more than the others. But I wouldn’t be a Liverpool fan if I weren’t a bit paranoid. :)

The EPL is kinda like F1 racing tho, in that if you lag behind by having a bad month there really isn’t any passing to be found later considering the quality of teams at the top. Pressure’s on to win win win and not lose pace with the thoroughbreds.

That’s where the cups come in, FA Cup in particular for England.
