Tuesday morning Rangers things
And that's that.
It has been a very good season overall, one that makes you feel a lot better about the 2010 timeframe, but you also can't help but feel that this was a missed opportunity for the Rangers.
Jim Reeves' game story says the Angels jumped on the Rangers early and just didn't let them up.
Ron Washington says that Nelson Cruz will be back in the lineup today. Michael Young was in the lineup, but wasn't 100%, and it wouldn't surprise me if Young and Josh Hamilton sat the rest of the way, given their conditions.
Marlon Byrd says he wants to come back to the Rangers in 2010.
And Reeves has a column about the Rangers' need to have Josh Hamilton in the lineup on a regular basis, with Reeves saying there are now those questioning Hamilton's willingness to play through pain.

Flipping back and forth between the Cowboys and the Rangers games last night I couldn’t decide which one was less irritating. But that was during the Cowboys first half. The Rangers lost that contest.

I had to sit thru Dancing With the F’en Stars with the first half of the Cowboys game before the Rangers got started. Lucky you.

At the end of the day
the team just was fairly mediocre through August and September. A .500 club over that span just was never going to close the gap.
A good year overall for the club, especially pitching and defense, as they are en route to allowing over 200 less runs than last year, which is unbelievably huge! Kind of a meh year for the offense, with injuries, and some really long slumps for hitters, and an unbelievable month long slump for the whole team in June. Rudy should definitely be on the hot seat for some of the performances across the board. Only Young and Cruz really stood out offensively.

yea....this sucks.
If Wash is still managing this team next year (of course he will be) and we don’t make some significant changes (of course we won’t $$$) then this team won’t be any better next year.
sigh.

Better this year than last
…with the same manager and no really significant changes (which I take to mean free-agent additions in this context, given the $$$). Certainly no assurance that next year will be better than (or as good as) this year, but not lacking hope entirely either.

What a terrible outlook on 2010
The team age this season was right around 27.5 with most of the key rotation and lineup constructed of guys younger than that. Hell, we had a 20/21 year old SS the whole season and a couple of 22 year old pitchers combining for 239 innings. This team doesn’t need to make a single significant change to improve next season. Their only real need is a good DH candidate who could fill in at 1B if Davis/Smoak doesn’t pan out. Without that, this team should still at least match this season’s production.

Not that it would have mattered last night...
but what’s wrong with this picture :
3) Murphy RF
4) Byrd CF
5) Blalock DH
On the Bench : Cruz
Nellie has now been benched 4 or the last 5 games. Games that both Murphy and Blalock have played in. THe one start he had he went 2-4 with a HR. For those of you who think the Wash hatred for Cruz is overreacting, I call bullshit. It’s getting to the point that I hope the Rangers trade their second best offensive player this off-season because I know the fucking manager won’t play him everyday. For this offense to sit Cruz is a joke. Screw you and your gut Wash.

Cruz is
A. In Wash’s doghouse
B. Hiding an injury
C. being benched to get a better read on other players
Those are the only reasons I can think of for Cruz being benched this much and only A seems likely. Even with the injury in August, he should have gotten at least 140 starts this season. I don’t get why he isn’t right there with Young and Kinsler for Wash to pencil in every single game.

it makes no sense
given the fact that Wash was bitching about how few RBIs Cruz had about a month ago. You can’t drive in runs if you’re on the bench. More than anything, that’s what is driving me nuts about Wash. Get the best players on the damn field!!!!!

I niormally dont agree with RW but his assessment on Cruz is well founded, If you look at the stats he has 34 home runs and 79 RBIs Murphy has 16 home runs and 55 RBIS Cruz is a great power hitter but doesnt hit enough singles and doubles. Also the last month he has been really bad. Look at fielding he has more error than Byrd and Murphy together.

55 of his 120 hits have been XBH
21 doubles, a triple, and 33 HR. That leaves 65 singles along with 49 walks and 20 stolen bases. While clearly a power hitter, 91 bases acquired other than HR in 457 AB’s isn’t shabby. And I agree that with 2 strikes he could afford to slide back to a contact swing.

Everybody knows Wash doesn’t do anything without explicit urging / approval from the Ranger FO and his benching of him now and earlier comments this month aren’t exactly encouraging.

I've been thinking Cruz gets traded for a while
and while I’m not as much on the “Wash is just a puppet” meme as you are, I definitely think that his underutilization (and misutilization) of Cruz would not have gone unchecked if someone in the organization had specifically advocated for him. I think what we can safely assume is that someone important (either Wash, Rudy or both) doesn’t like Cruz, and that JD and Nolan aren’t such huge Cruz fans to override their coaches opinions.
Add in that Cruz is coming off a career year and is cheap and under team control for a while, he’s an ideal trading chip. I think if the Rangers can sign Byrd, they’ll do that and try to flip Cruz.
I’m not inherently against that either, if they are getting something really good back for Cruz (part of a TORG deal, high ceiling SP prospect, high ceiling 3b or COF hitter prospect)

Cruz and Rudy are two interesting offseason cases.
I think Rudy could be gone after this year. Call it cost-cutting. Or maybe he would finally get a manager’s position. I think CD’s and Cruz’s development, especially development of pitch recognition leading to fewer Ks and better contact rates, under the tutelage of Scott Coolbaugh might be enough justification to go with the cheaper coach.
Cruz, though, is one of the prime trade candidates due to his productivity and years under team control. He’s somewhat at a position of depth for the Rangers, moreso if they bring back Byrd.
Both could be gone after this offseason.

Look at what you said is something really good for Cruz
The TORG deal is going to require a pretty big player added to it from the Rangers side to get done when the Rangers near future need is offense. The high ceiling SP prospect is nice but again isn’t really what the Rangers need. The COF prospect is pointless since Cruz is the player we’d hope a COF prospect would be. And the 3B prospect is nice, but not what the team needs in the near future with Young here.
There really isn’t much out there for the Rangers if they are looking to trade Cruz and improve their team for 2010.

by COF and 3b prospects, I’m talking about guys who will be potential contributors ~3 years down the line. Same with a high ceiling SP. And obviously I wouldn’t trade my TORG for Cruz, but heck, if someone is willing to, by all means do it.
Really, I don’t think Cruz can return anything that this team needs “right now.” Really, right now this team needs a high-OBP guy and their young guys to take 2 steps forward for every 1 step back. And they’ll be very competitive if that happens. Cruz and Byrd are somewhat redundant; we all have our preference, obviously. But if the team opts to keep Byrd, for whatever reason, then they should go ahead an “invest” Cruz to get one or two guys who can start filling into this team in the more distant future (2012 and onward).

Reeves is back!
After being mildly distracted by the glow of Rangers goodness, he deposits attemps big blow on Hamilton, reminding everyone who the real FOTF is and how a FOTF needs to act for the betterment of the young-uns. The Rangers would be in a world of hurt if they didn’t have this type of constructive instruction coming from Reeves.
I don’t think a pinched nerve is anything to take as lightly as Reeves is. One type of motion may be completely possible, while another might put you on your back in pain. It has nothing to do with pain tolerance, just what a person’s body will allow him to do. Besides, is it really necessary that Josh take on the role of being the clubhouse leader? Seems the Rangers already have that in MY and Byrd. There’s no reason to believe that Hamilton has to fill the vocal leader role should Byrd leave. Someone else could do so. Maybe even Andrus or Murphy.
Strange article by Reeves. Did he just want to pick on Hamilton for some particular reason left unstated in the article?

Is it really news
that Borbon’s arm is a weakness? I thought this was documented when he was drafted. Acting like this is a revelation is just being dramatic. The scoop has been that he could cover a lot of ground, getting to balls that others might not get to. That may not prove to be true because of faulty routes, but the strength of his arm is what it is.

Overall
the big news is that Borbon overall, Jumps, reading the ball, arm, everything but closing speed looks pretty shaky. Considering how much some were touting him as a gold glove CF, it tells me the defensive scouting reports we are getting from the farm are pretty shaky.

His arm sucks
but I think his speed and plate approach are enough to make him an everyday player…if I’ve learned anything about baseball this season, it’s that you need to score runs to win. Defense and pitching are great, but the bottom line is that you have to be able to score when you need to. I think Borbon leading off GREATLY helps this team offensively…I hope Pettis can get him to alter his positioning enough to to minimize the effect his rag arm will have on the run prevention.

MLB Playoffs
I say if the Rangers record is better then trhe AL Central Champs, that the Rangers should get to go in their place. Why can’t the top 4 records in the NL or AL be the 4 teams to go to the playoffs? Atleast the 1st and 2nd place teams don’t all go to the playoffs like the NBA but atleast reward a team over a worst record Central team. They can still hoist AL Central Champs in their stadium, just don’t let them in the playoffs.

Hahaha!
And you can never delete this…

And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.

It's
because schedules are loaded towards divisional play. If you’re not going to give a divisional winner a chance at the playoffs why even have divisions?

If you're going to lament the Rangers'
failure to make the playoffs with a good record at least say something like there should be a second wild card team. Otherwise it just sounds like whining and being a sore loser….

Which is what makes the Wildcard suck...
If the schedule is going to be as unbalanced as it is, that makes the Wildcard unfair on its face. Of course, if we played in the AL Central, our record of 21-19 against them wouldn’t have us winning any titles either.
I’m all for adding a 2nd WC; if we’re going to have 1, then 1 more would be better. Onbly problem is it really f’s up the brackets to have 5 teams.
