OT: New Music Thread!!!!

Crappy ending to the Rangers season, maybe that means this is a time for some LSB communal bonding.  Here's some relatively new music I've recently come across that I think is good and worthy of sharing.  You got any new stuff you've been listening to that is any good?  This isn't 75 words so here's some more words until we get there.

Band of Skulls - I Know What I Am

                                                                                          Mew - Beach

                                                                               Washed Out - New Theory

Because you have said you smoked a little weed? I’m willing to bet 80% of the people on this board have done that.

Not sure why you are the punchline to every drug joke around here.

Haven't listened to much new music lately...

..but I did get the new Jay-Z album (Blueprint III). It’s not bad, but I had already heard the 3 songs I like best (D.O.A-I’m convinced it doesn’t get more airplay because it makes fun of half of the other songs on hip hop stations right now, Run This Town, Empire State of Mind). I like what he’s moved towards since the Black Album (more live/jazz band incorporation) and he does more of it here than with American Gangster.

Just googling for the song names brought up this link if you want to listen:

That’s how they’re making their money. I remember hearing modest mouse on a honda commercial or something and was like “what the fuck?” but have come to understand it. I mean there’s no radio station except for sat radio that plays these bands so they have to get exposure somehow.

I still get pissed when I hear huge bands from the 60’s have songs on TV commercials. Rolling Fucking Stones, for example. And didn’t Michael Jackson own the Beatles or something? I’m sure they’ll be selling everything now.

I read a study by some psychologists on this...

We are all basically in love with the music that we ‘discover’ from the time we’re 18-24. After that, we may like other things, but generally those songs/bands will always be considered “best.” As we get older, we apparently tend to like newer music less and less.

I wonder if CashMoney Records will ever be able to go on tour and charge $250/ticket like Madonna and Springsteen.

So substantiate it. Unless you’re talking about something you can quantify, I don’t see how you do it.

I’m chilled out, but it’s annoying that you have to call his opinion stupid, and challenge his knowledge/intelligence. He never said that anybody who thinks there is plenty of good music has a stupid opinion—he just disagrees based on subjective tastes.

Look

I’m not making a judgment call as to his subjective taste. I’m not saying he likes band A and band A sucks; I’m simply saying it’s stupid to say something like “new music sucks.”

It’s not a disagreement about taste; it’s a disagreement about whether or not there is something redeeming about new music.

by FuturePants on Sep 30, 2009 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I never said I was a music genius either...

Radio poppy music is terrible. My initial post was too harsh, and too general. I didn’t mean ALL new music, I meant the new “popular” music is terrible (in my opinion anyways).

by cmkelly29 on Sep 30, 2009 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Now that I can agree with.

I am sort of convinced that people like the stuff on the radio because they literally don’t know any better – they just aren’t exposed to enough good new music to know that most of the stuff you hear is pretty awful.

by FuturePants on Sep 30, 2009 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I know there is the "in my day" homerism...

but honestly, this generation of music just does not compare to the 90’s as far as what’s popular and what’s on the radio.

by cmkelly29 on Sep 30, 2009 11:48 AM CDT up reply actions

That's a function of the business of radio, though.

It’s not evidence of less good music out there. Radio is almost a monopoly by Clear Channel. They promote the bands they are putting on tour, it’s that simple.

by FuturePants on Sep 30, 2009 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

A lot of what I hear on the radio now...

sounds like a re-hash of 80’s music. Franz Ferdinand, The Killers.. I don’t know. I mean, they’re definitely talented. It just sounds like they’re ripping off another generation.

by cmkelly29 on Sep 30, 2009 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Or

People just like it.

It seems an odd argument to suggest that people put something on the market and consumers will buy literally whatever it is, with absolutely no discernment. The more logical explanation is that more people like what you term “awful” music than don’t, and thus record companies and radio stations give people what they want.

by brettgardner on Sep 30, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Or

It’s on the radio because the radio station is pushing the bands they back.

The more logical explanation is that without competition or alternatives, the general public only has one choice as to what to listen to, and they like whatever they hear on there just fine and are content to roll with what they hear. Most people do not want to investigate music and try to find stuff that is better – they are ok with just listening to what the radio puts in front of them.

by FuturePants on Sep 30, 2009 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

That's ridiculous.

For one, in a place like Dallas, there are a ton of choices for music on the radio itself. Second, it’s hardly the case that people don’t or can’t get music from other sources than KISS FM—that’s just complete bullshit that you assume for no reason. It’s elitist to the highest degree to assume that “most people” do something dumber than you just because you don’t like the result.

But again, WHY would a radio station back a band? They don’t just pull random douches off the street and “back” them. They back what more people want—whether it’s listening, seeing, or watching live. Your theory is completely opposite of how markets work.

by brettgardner on Sep 30, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

For being a law student, you have poor reading comprehension skills.

There are a lot of radio stations, sure, but how many play new music? Not many.

I never said anything about backing random douches off the street. In 2000, people liked the Backstreet Boys. Crazy for them, in fact. The Backstreet Boys were pushed by Clear Channel and their PR machine, which had more money than, say, Death Cab for Cutie or Modest Mouse.

I picked those two bands because they both had solid albums in 2000 (We Have the Facts… and Moon and Antarctica, respectively), but neither band got big until way later – after they had a breakout radio hit or two.

Does the fact that people ate up the Backstreet Boys mean that most people thought they were better than Death Cab and Modest Mouse in 2000? Or does it mean that their PR machine was an absolute monster, and Death Cab and Modest Mouse did not have the same finances backing them, so the “good” bands were left to obscurity while the Backstreet Boys ruled the airwaves?

In short, you are naive.

by FuturePants on Sep 30, 2009 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Uh huh

So, in your opinion, if millions upon millions of pre-teen girls had heard Death Cab for Cutie, they would have instantly dumped the good-looking guys with cheesy love songs for the fat blob with quirks?

And you’re calling me naive? What a stunningly retarded argument.

It's not because they just don't know any better.

Lowest common denominator determines popularity in music. Most people don’t spend a lot of time in deep thinking about the music they listen to, they just buy stuff that catches their ear in a favorable way. Just like most people don’t think long and hard about what beer they drink, they just buy Coors Lite or whatever and get on with their day.

Everyone has niche areas of their life that they care more about and have a bit of a connoisseur in them about. likewise, everyone has areas they don’t care as much about and don’t care to discern “good” from “bad” according to some standard of excellence.

In other words, for some things we all want what we think is “good”. In others, “good enough” will do.

I mean, seriously. I used to care about music more, but never enough to explore the depths of the indie music scene. Since I knew I would never be the type to devote the huge amount of time+money, I’m ok with good. It doesn’t mean I like backstreet boys (N’sync, duh!), but it also means I’ve never heard of people listed in original post.

Traditionally for me, I’ve liked music you can dance to. Rap, Swing, Salsa, Pop, etc. I spend a lot less time going out now than in college, so my music tastes are trending more towards indie rock. But I doubt I’ll ever buy 40 new ones in a year.

I’m too busy waiting for that N’Sync reunion album.

open your fucking ears

There’s a lot of good music out there now.

I grew up in the grunge era that so many people remember so fondly, and holy shit if a lot of that didn’t suck ass. Some of it was good but most of it just did not endure. And it’s the same way with music of every era. Go back to the late sixties and you’ll hear some of the most unlistenable shit you can imagine. I have family with record collections. Much of it is great — that’s how I discovered the 13th Floor Elevators — but so much of it is just fucking hopelessly awful.

But seriously do not listen to radio. I haven’t heard a good radio station I guess since the first low wattage, pre-mormon “The Edge” was on the air almost 20 years ago. It’s all corporate now and the DJs play whatever the record companies tell them to, or at least that’s what it sounds like to me.

i dont think there is very much good new music, but that is more a matter of aesthetic taste than a sweeping factual statement. I also grew up on grunge/alternative stuff in the mid 90s and god it’s just atrocious when i hear it now.

i keep my car radio rotating between 3 presets: the ticket, NPR, and 96.7 memories. they play some decent tunes on there.

A "lack of fresh ideas?"

Are you serious? Dude, go get some music, spend some time listening, then realize how wrong you are. I can point you to some music websites that can help you with your problem, but saying there’s a lack of fresh ideas is simply one of the stupidest and obviously uninformed things one can say about new music.

Wow.

by FuturePants on Sep 30, 2009 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

There's no reason to call my opinion wrong if all you can say is 'go listen to some music' and 'I can show you some websites'

Motherfucker I listen to modern music without the aid of the radio, and I know what the fuck I’m talking about

Enlighten me: what significant strides has music made in the last decade?

Has it changed our culture the way it did with Vietnam? Has it spawned off 50 fucking million genres and subgenres of music out there like the music from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s?

The reason why there are ‘good’ bands like Tool out there are because of bands like King Crimson.

Old jazz is still played by old musicians. Mainstream hip-hop has become a laughing stock

Thanks to software piracy more and more rich kids from the suburbs are becoming accomplished DJs

Everybody has a band these days and they kinda sound like ________.

Go fuck yourself man. Music today has nothing on the old shit.

I have to agree here..

only because everything now sounds like everything that’s already been done. Radio music seems to be all hybrid shit now. It’s no fault of the bands making music today, I just think the well is tapped.

This is so crazy that it's not even worth arguing.

If you think there is nothing fresh, then that is what you think. It’s ridiculous, but whatever. Not worth debating.

Ok Fresh

Try

Dirty Projectors
Deerhoof
Wavves
TV on the Radio
Fleet Foxes
Portishead
Titus Andronicus
Wolf Parade

I think all of those bands have some very fresh sounds. Maybe you disagree, I have no idea, but if you can say one of those sounds like Band or Album X or Y, I’d be curious to see what you compare them to and who they are ripping off.

And not having a massive political impact does not mean the sounds are not fesh. New music doesn’t have to alter the social undercurrent in opposition to a war to be good or new or creative.

by FuturePants on Sep 30, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Most of the music you've listed is just a hodge-podge of other musical influences

But i just want you to know that I’m really impressed with your deep indie rock collection and wish you all the best, now and going forward

by oc on Sep 30, 2009 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

No but seriously.

Tell me what or who The Dirty Projectors ripped off in their “hodge-podge of other musical influences.” Maybe you have a legitimate point, that’s what I’m trying to figure out.

by FuturePants on Sep 30, 2009 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

huh?
Most of the music you’ve listed is just a hodge-podge of other musical influences

So……..Exactly what music do you listen to that isn’t influenced by other music?

You only listen to ancient drumming? Are you mad that those may have been stolen from chimp mating rituals?

Do you just listen to recordings of birds singing or something?

"You'll meet them again on their long journey to the middle." -Lester Bangs

by BAC on Sep 30, 2009 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Music back in the day was influenced by other music obviously.

I suppose my argument is that music was more fundamentally raw in the old days and didn’t have many of the modern luxuries that music has today; and this is in regards to whatever capacity you wanna talk about: recording, reaching an audience, experimentation with different arrangements / different genres, whatever…

Kraftwerk, King Tubby, The Ramones, Edgard Varèse, James Brown, Dizzy Gillespie… these are people that changed the way music could be perceived.

TV On The Radio is good stuff, but in my opinion, it’s not breaking any new ground sonically. I listen to TV On The Radio and it’s like I’m listening to Peter Gabriel sometimes

Look it's really no big deal...

Honestly..

The problem is that a lot of artists are trying way too hard to be different. A lot of them are trying WAY too hard. It’s mostly exaggerated folk nowadays.

I like Fleet Foxes, but they are certainly not “fresh” at all. Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) anyone?

this is pretty accurate

the big difference is that barriers to recording, distributing, or otherwise exhibiting music are much less significant now, which probably tends to make it seem like there is more worse music around.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Sep 29, 2009 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep.

1) 98% of all music sucks and it has always been that way.
2) There is always good old day syndrome and the music of a person’s teens and twenties were better than the music when they are 40 and 50.
3) Music gets less important to folks as they get older.

I disagree with #3

that is a blanket statement that doesn’t apply to at least professional musicians such as myself. As for #2 that seems right for most people. Personally I tend to float back from genre to genre in popular styles from time to time, but listen to more classical than anything else, so the “good old days” are very old for me, as in mostly pre-1900.

Well,

like all generalizations, they are probably wrong a minority of the time.

I know most musicians I went to high school with used to get menial part time jobs to supplement what they made playing in clubs at night. Now that they are in their 40s and 50s, a lot of them only play for special events with family and friends, and are selling insurance or whatever.

I remember Lisa wearing that Fire jersey everywhere back in the day. She and my ex-roommate used to work together at Mad Hatter’s. If you remember the local band Elysian Fields, he was the guitarist.

I really need to see the Toadies again- I’ve been listening to No Deliverance a lot lately after hearing “Nothing to Cry About” and “I Want Your Love” on Sons of Anarchy this season.

Yeah I remember Elysian Fields

Can’t remember that guy’s name, though. Hung out at Mat Hatter’s a whole lot and eventually the Engine Room when they moved.

I stopped going to Toadies shows when they got super popular. It wasn’t being a snob…it was just the crowds that got to me. Some of my favorite times back then was when they were waiting forever and ever for Interscope to release Rubberneck. They got so sick of waiting they made another EP in the meantime called “Y’r Cute”, which I think is some of their best work. Anyway this was like in 1992 or something and a friend of mine had this CD burner but it wasn’t hooked up to a computer or anything. It just pressed CDs and that was it. Anyway if he didn’t make all of the EPs in his bedroom he made most of them.

I saw them again while in college. I think they’d broke up and reunited or something and played some festival in Dallas. I was so high I don’t even remember where it was but I didn’t like the tunes they were playing. It was mostly new stuff.

Now and then I’ll still listen to Santacide and I Burn and Not In Love (Talking Heads cover) but that’s about it. Every great now and then I’ll break out Caulk’s “Love American Style” and a Baboon record I can’t remember the name of right now. I actually listen to them more than I do Toadies.

Baboon and Caulk, I haven’t listened to those albums in a long time.

by GregoryM on Oct 1, 2009 8:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Baboon

I’ve seen them play a number of times- they used to open a lot for Brutal Juice, which was pretty much my favorite local band ever.

The Elysian Fields guitarist was Erik Liverman- we roomed together my last year in college and for a couple years after. I still stay in touch with the drummer, Bruce Alford- we’ve known each other since my junior year of college. I also went to school with Doug Kershaw (Tabula Rasa, Sunward)- we’ve known each other since elementary school.

Mad Hatter’s and the Engine Room? Man, that brings back a ton of memories. A lot of them involving me and my friends being completely wasted, and trying to decide afterwards if the Waffle House was a good idea at 3 AM.

There’s no telling how many times I’ve seen them live. I actually avoided them when Brutal Juice was playing. That’s a band I just couldn’t get into.

I remember Tabula Rasa. One of the first local bands I liked. There was also Killbilly and some other band that I was really into back then. Fort Worth used to have it’s own little music scene.

Back to Baboon, though. I haven’t heard much of their later stuff, but people who think there’s no original music out there should try to find some of the early stuff they had out on Grass. One record in particular was outstanding but I still can’t remember the name of it. Had “American Dream” on it.

As someone mentioned above, I think I’ve hit the age where the music I like is what I like. I can’t even remember the last “new” band that I liked. Maybe System of A Down?

No, you're good

It’s probably bad that I don’t know any of these bands though. But then again, my musical tastes are probably a far cry from the rest of LSB’s. For example, I’d have mentioned Miranda Lambert’s new album dropped today, but I know nobody gives a shit.

This is one community bonding thing I just can’t really take part in.

I got your country back

Love Lambert and Dierks Bentley as far as mainstream. and though I hate to admit it I seem to always enjoy frickin Kenny Chesney. We Went Out Last Night ended up in regular rotation this summer.

My favorite country album this year is the new Radney Foster album(Revival). Nothing else has come close.

I tend to enjoy “texas” country more than “mainstream”. My favorite band probably being Randy Rogers. Check out Brandon Rhyder if you haven’t already. Enjoy Eli Young Band as well

….and my guilty pleasure is Taylor Swift. I’ve got two young daughters and I must say I don’t mind cruising to Swift. Talent out the wazoo. I think she writes most/all of her stuff. Quite impressive, especially when compared to other young “stars”.

by red shoe ranger on Oct 2, 2009 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I really like the Eli Young band too

I haven’t really listen to country radio in awhile, but Gary Allan and Lady Antebellum are probably my other faves besides Miranda. They’re both supposed to releasing new albums sometime in the near future, I think (I know Lady A’s is supposed to be in November, not really sure about Allan’s though). There’s also some Keith Urban stuff I really like, although he can be kinda hit and miss (same with Chesney, really). I’ll throw out Dwight Yoakam and Pat Greene as a couple other artists I really like.

I’ve never really liked Taylor Swift’s stuff per se (and I must say, her stage performances at the awards shows never fail to make me roll my eyes) but you do have to respect her writing abilites. She’s definitely more impressive than Underwood or Kellie Pickler.

I’ll have to check out that Foster album.

keeping track of new music

is definitely a younger man’s game. i have a hard time figuring out how these people who consume (or try to consume) that much music really get anything meaningful out of most of it. i’m sure there are some fine gems in all of the bands being mentioned so far, but sifting through the heaps of generic garbage to find them seems like a sisyphean task.

I liked the first two.

My favorite of the 4 in order…

Mew – Beach… seemed rather short. I like the song very much.

The Band of Skulls – I know what I am. Was a good one too.

Deer Tick – Art Isn’t Real. Good lyrics… I actually like this

Washed Out – New Theory. It was pretty good.

Overall i liked all four songs.

Thanks for sharing… never heard these songs before.

Fuck new music

the Pavement reunion tour is going to blow my fucking socks off next year.

I think I saw them about 15-16 times in high school/college, and I’m hoping to see them at least a few times next year, reliving those good times 10-15 years ago.

I already told my wife that I may vanish for a week or two next year to follow them around the region so she should just be prepared to deal with the kids by herself.

I know I'm gonna be in the VAST minority here, but...

I REALLY like Daughtry’s new album from this summer. It’s one of the best all-around albums I’ve ever heard. He’s got the hard rock stuff, some country-type songs, as well as really solid, thorough tracks that show off his talent vocally and his band’s musical prowess. And yeah I’m a Nickelback fan too (in fact, they’re my favorite band), so let the shots begin I suppose…

P.S. – I’m pissed at Creed for taking 3/4 of Alter Bridge back. They were so much better than Creed ever was.

never understood

why people hate on Daughtry, et al fans. Is there a problem with genero Rock music? If it makes one turn up their radio, roll down their widow, and scream sing a song I would call that “good” music.

I like pretty much all music. I have different tastes for different moods. What I like at the gym is different than when I’m driving. When reading I like totally different music, etc, etc, etc. We each get to create our own “soundtrack” to our respective lives and if your entire soundtrack is chock full of Fleet Foxes and others of that ilk……Well then.

This is why music snobs are annoying.

“Who cares where a musician comes from or how much support they get, if they make good music, they deserve credit for it” —>Great method for getting people to spend more time investigating music

“You’re a complete and utter moron who can barely walk up right for thinking that any music you like is good because you haven’t spent 10 hours on google investigating their backstories and finding out where their next show is going to be” —>Great method for getting people to tell you to go play in the street and turn up their latest Kelly Clarkson CD

Music can be good even if it comes from big corporations with fancy production teams. It can be bad, too. Same can be said for indie rock bands.
