Thursday a.m. Rangers things

So, after that ugly Monday game, the Rangers take the next three from Toronto, losing just Michael Young and Josh Hamilton in the process.

Anthony Andro writes that yesterday's game is an example of the resiliency of this Ranger team.

Evan Grant has praise for C.J. Wilson and Frankie Francisco for coming in and shutting down the Jays in the last couple of innings.

Josh Hamilton left yesterday's game with a bad back, which has been bothering him since the series in Minnesota last week, but thinks he shouldn't miss the Rangers' next game on Friday because of it.

Jean-Jacques Taylor says that Hamilton needs to step up and carry the Rangers now.

Hamilton is particularly key because Michael Young is out with a hamstring injury, although Young, who thought his season was over on Tuesday when he pulled up, now is shooting to return for the Rangers' series with the Angels in mid-September.

Jeff (the writer) Miller has a story up about Julio Borbon and Elvis Andrus hitting 1-2 in the lineup, and if you saw yesterday's game, one of the more memorable moments was Borbon rounding the bases ahead of Andrus when Elvis homered, looking as thrilled as if he'd been the one to hit it.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been activated, but he's going to be limited to pinch hitting and emergency catching duties, and will likely undergo surgery to deal with his Thoracic Outlet Syndrome in the offseason.

And there are six groups interested in buying the Rangers, although it sounds like Tom Hicks' (and Bud Selig's) desire to get $600 million for the Rangers is a tad optimistic.

Agreed, and probably batting clean-up.

Byrd w/OBA is 7'th on the team of the everyday players right behind Murphy.

Whom he was platooning with when the season started. His lifetime w/OBA is .330 and has a .337 this year. Murphy’s are .345 and .339. My point is Byrd & Murphy have proven to be exactly what they are platoon OF’s. Byrd has not show anything to warrant batting clean-up or taking playing time away from Nellie.

The future of Hamilton

Hopefully any talk of long term contracts for Hamilton is done. It was never a good idea and seems even less so.

The Rangers obviously need another bat next year. Hamilton and Davis are about the two most unpredictable players you could have in your lineup right now. If both play more to expectations next year and you’ve added a bat as well, all the better.

That's dumb

There’s plenty of youth throughout the team. Keeping Smoak in the minors to begin the season and going with a FA or some combination of other players on the roster for the DH spot isn’t ruining everything.

they are players here that we built around

cmon man thats not the same as going and getting a guy ….geez lets atleast be realistic in our arguments. we have plenty of players and youth and such in this organization to fill the dh spot……..hell right now we have way to many outfielders and 1st baseman……we have enough players to do this within just like how we got here this year if you havent forgotten.

by dubious on Sep 3, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

We have 2 options for the DH spot

Smoak and Max. We can roll with other guys in the DH spot, but outside of Young, none of them should really be DHing much. And Smoak is in his first full pro season this year and Max has basically wasted his entire season with injuries. None of those 2 guys are anywhere close to being guaranteed to go from ST next year. That’s why you look at a good 1 year option to try out and bring those guys up when/if they’ve shown they’re ready.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

i would go with smoak based on only one thing

and I may be wrong on this. He gets on base via walks. Now with me saying that I just think he is more advanced hitting wise than Davis at this juncture in his career. The guy doesn’t strike out alot and he hits for avg and not the homer or nothing like some others. Its a 50-50 chance but I have more belief in our people in the organization now and they say he is alot like tex. I guess I would love to see his spring next year to make that decision when he is actually in a tense situation for a spot on the roster.

by dubious on Sep 3, 2009 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

The only realistic positions for improvement

are DH and maybe catcher. Unless we can spend on a DH, we need to hope for any improvement in the offense to come from the guys we have here.

Bradley had pretty close to a career year in '08.

And it was also the first (and only) year that he’s played for a black manager (Felipe Alou, Charlie Manuel, Joel Skinner, Eric Wedge, Jim Tracy, Ken Macha, Bud Black, now Lou Piniella).

Now obviously, correlation doesn’t equal causation, but I wonder if there’s something there.

Have you looked at Milton’s line this year? If not here you go:

.266/.395/.421

That’s with only 12 dingers too. He’s walking at a nice clip, but factor in the injury and attitude risks there’s no way they can expect to get the blue chip prospects you listed. Hopefully with some new money coming in, they’ll pick up the bulk of his contract and flip him for a few B- prospects

Lots of options for cheap-ish, short contracts

Abreu as a DH/backup OF. His .366 wOBA would be 3rd on this team (Young, Cruz) this year. His power is down this year (.426 vs a career .455), but he’s made up for it with an improved OBP (.392 vs a career .378).

Thome as a DH. His .373 wOBA would also be 3rd on this team. He would have to have his option not picked up and not be offered arbitration (I think he’s a type A), but I think I read that was part of his terms to be traded to the Dodgers.

Seeing as how he's making $5 million + bonuses,

there should be room to bargain. =)

You wouldn’t do 2 years, option 3rd for $9 million/year for Abreu? I suppose he is 35 now, which is certainly getting up there. I think a bigger problem is that he’s a lefty and ideally you would add a righty bat for the DH. Same with Thome, plus he’s 39.

In the OF you would have to dump one of Cruz, Borbon, or Hamilton. In the IF you’d have to dump one of Young, Andrus, Kinsler, or Davis.

Honestly, with Smoak coming up, Catcher is the only position I see that you can easily upgrade. Maybe you cut Davis lose and upgrade 1B/DH.

trade Chris Davis in a package for Greinke. Obviously now that can’t be done. Same thing we should have done with our catchers. Now we’re left with 3 unsures.

Catchers

Looking back on how that played out, it looks more like what JD did wasn’t stockpile catchers to trade but stockpile catchers to try and get one serviceable guy out of the group.

None of the catchers have met my expectations yet, but thanks to the number of options we have, things aren’t over yet.

I would love to get Greinke here.
But the idea I proposed – which has drawn 80% disapproval – sending KC a package of Saltalamacchia, Hurley, JMJ, and Madrigal, doesn’t kill us in any area developmentally. Feliz, for me, is all but untouchable.

That’s a trade proposal, not an actual trade proposal. We’re not talking about what we were or were not willing to do. We’re talking about if Greinke could ever be had in the first place. Realistically, Moore was not looking to trade his franchise player. To get him at the time, you would have to do a whole lot more than Davis.

Personally, I think this team has shown a real knack for filling in the 1-2 missing pieces in the pen. If they would just start showing a knack for proerly using the middle guys, we’d be in much better shape.\

I’m all for signing a DH/OF type; we have to add some consistent production to this offense.

On a related note: did I see correctly that 23 of Cruz’s 30 HRs were solo shots. Why oh why couldn’t he have been batting higher in the order???

Adding bullpen arms

is incredibly risky. You can go after premier closers, but they are expensive. Middle relievers are just a way to waste money. You’re far better off going to the scrap heap (e.g,. Darren O’Day) and hoping to get lucky than committing millions of dollars to them.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Sep 3, 2009 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Agree 150%

You can build a good bullpen with scrap heap guys, failed starters, and youngsters who throw real hard and are learning how to pitch in the bigs. A group of those guys is no less reliable than a group of high dollar middle relievers and they’re a lot cheaper.

Remember when the O’s signed like four relievers to multi-million dollar deals a couple of years ago? How well did that work out for them?

Obviously Feliz deserves credit for Andrus' HR.

Recently, Feliz has been working on a secret weapon that is the main reason for the significant improvement of his curveball. Telekinesis. Feliz wanted the Rangers to win, so using his newly developed skill, he ‘willed’ Andrus’ ball over the left field wall.

Well.....

The Great Hank Blalock War of June 2009 has certainly taken another turn now hasn’t it?

A little surprised Hank F was summoned from Siberia to get the start but he was a real pro. He wasn’t very good the last week (definitely exhausted) before the benching but there were signs he was coming out of it (the walks started coming, narrowly missed HR’s, line drives that were caught) but every time he stepped on the diamond, a black cloud followed or an anvil dropped on his head.

Probably need to let it all play out because, well, sometimes The Fog of War can be quite blinding. The next two weeks without MY should be quite telling.

This wouldn’t be a good time for CD to throw down another 3 for 44 (and he looked like hell last night) and while he has been better, he’s had a lot of luck in that 11 for 36 he’s had since coming up.

What answer? The one you’ve made up about 1000 times, with no proof other than your fevered imagination to back it up?

I still haven’t seen one quote from an active Ranger player, one shred of evidence that you have any more idea what goes on in “the room” than any of us do. All you’ve offered is your own take on the situation and a few comments last winter from Kevin Mench, who’s hardly an unbiased source on the subject.

Let’s hear who your sources are, and what they have to say. Specifics, not generalities, or projections of your own feelings onto the players. Because that’s all you’ve offered so far.

So let me get this straight ..

After nearly 200 comments, albeit after a huge victory, not a peep about Wash last night?

I imagine there was a GDT meltdown or two about it, but good fucking grief.

The game was well in hand since about the fifth inning, everything is riding perfectly smoothly, CJ dominates the 8th with a short 9 pitch inning. I plead with my buddy that Wash will let him finish the 9th, on such a short pitch count already — with Fx2 having pitched BOTH games of the doubleheader.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?

You pull him after striking out Overbay, only 15 pitches in, to put Frankie in for 2 outs?

Is this April redux? CJ looked PISSED — ball flip was in order.

I mean, every manager in a playoff race is going to have to stretch their bullpen

You form your arguments with an extreme bias against RW

He could have:
(1) Put in Franky, and here we are
(2) Left C.J. in, you would have blasted him for leaving in C.J. for 2 innings when it was his 4th appearance in 5 days.
(3) Put in a less reliable pitcher, and you would have blasted him for not putting in a dominant bullpen arm in a game of that much importance

Tired arguments from the Wash-haters. The man led the rebuilding Texas Rangers into playoff contention….

Wash is frustrating at times, but so is every freaking manager.

They never do everything the way we want.

Yes, yes. We'd all love a manager who made all of his in-game moves in a manner that made perfect sense to us stathead fans on the series of tubes.

But the plain old fact of the matter is that that guy doesn’t exist.

There is no perfect manager who does everything just the way we’d like him to.

If you can get a guy who the players really seem to like and play hard for and can get out of his own way even just most of the time, then that’s a guy to keep.

He’s not anywhere close to being on shaky ground.

by NorCalRangersFan on Sep 3, 2009 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions

We're not in the dugout

I have to believe that for some of Wash’s decision, we don’t know all the facts. Maybe a reliever couldn’t get warmed up correctly. Maybe a bench player is on the bench because he’s a little dinged up that day. We just don’t have all the information. All we see are the stats. Wash said that FF said he felt great and wanted the ball. Does that not count for something? Do you think that Wash would have put him in if he said he was tired and sore from the workload the previous day?

All I’m saying is its hard to second guess every decision without knowing all the facts.

"What ... 92 miles per hour?" Feldman scoffed. "That's not gas. Feliz throws gas."

Yes and no

Frankie may have learned his lesson earlier in the season when he went on the DL after overuse. Same with CJ after last year. Again, we’re not there, so we’re not privy to those conversations. Is Wash a good enought judge of character to know when one of his guys is just being competitive, but really isn’t feeling his best. I don’t know. But neither do you.

and Wash has overused Frankie multiple times this year.

Hank is the elephant in the room. When will he disappear?

by inactive lsb user on Sep 3, 2009 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

What is your definition of overuse?

FF2: 42 appearances, 40 innings, 2 occasions pitching 3 times in a row
Fuetes: 51, 44, 3 (one 4 in a row)
Rivera: 55, 55, 2 (one 5 of 6)

FF did have a lot of pitches in August, but that month he only had 2 back-to-back starts.

One of the side effects of winning a lot of games is that your closer gets more work.

He didn’t try to push Hunter even though he was at 86 pitches after the 7th. He let CJ get Overbay, a LHB, in the 9th before bringing up Frankie. He only threw 23 pitches total on Tuesday, 10 last night and they are off today. He also subbed Omar for Blalockin the 9th, moving CD over to 1B.

Bad logic.

Because he did this move, and nothing bad happened (that we know of), does not justify it.

That was CJ’s game to finish and nobody else’s. But, I understand the situation .. Frankie is Ron’s “closer.”

Frankie walks a guy, then you have a lefty up. Then what? Bring CJ in? Oh, wait ..

I’m just saying that if you have a power relief pitcher who is dominating, why pull a guy from dealing to see if another guy may or may not have his stuff that night?

It is simply not worth the risk. Period. Good defensive changes, sure, but aren’t they moot if Snider goes deep there? I think you’re off base.
