i was kinda sorta
starting to fall for tim smith’s prospectyness, his greer-like stats, etc. but smith and pina are probably a small price to pay for danny gutierrez. it does make me wonder if JD plans on simply farming out our pitchers to other staffs next year, because we may not even have enough position players to field complete teams.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Oh, won't somebody please think of the overall symmetry of the prospect depth in our system!!!!

pffffft. im not concerned in the slightest what our Position prospects look like.
as far as i see, LF is a position to strengthen over time. Catcher unless we see improvement with both our TT/Salty combo, a DH? not with Smoak and Crush having to fight for playing time. All the rest of our club, 6 of 9 places are guys signed 4 years or more. 1/3 of those are all stars. i just dont see the need at the top, and hence the thin area. but this year saw us go after a lot of toolsy raw OFers with high upside that are 4 years away or so, so it all comes together.
I can't help it. I’m an asshole.

dirk was being facetious
and so was I. A GM should never make a meaningful trade or draft pick while thinking about minor league position depth. I do, however, think we will be extra active in the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft filling out our ranks with org guys.

Maybe someone with a 3B wants Gutierrez.
It’s really odd timing just to trade for him.

I doubt you would be able to get a significant upgrade over German/Vizquel
for the cost of Smith and Pina.
My guess is that anybody you could get for those 2 would be basically equivalent to what we’ve already got.

BP profiles him as mid rotation starter
though I dont think those evaluations get updated during the season. His main issue has been staying healthy apparently and he throws across his body.
And this will upset finnerty, he’s small at 6ft1 180lb

he's a great arm.
Has a really bad attitude as you can tell from his older brother posting in another area. If he fixes that, he’ll be golden.

Rany Jazawhatever said:
On August 12 (www.ranyontheroyals.com) he rated Gutierrez 7th in the Royals organization:
7) Danny Gutierrez, RHP, 22. If I had written this piece a few weeks ago, my evaluation of Gutierrez would be very different. Gutierrez broke out last season as one of the most intriguing arms in the organization; the former 33rd-round draft-and-follow showed an improved fastball and dynamite curveball on his way to striking out 104 batters in 90 innings for Burlington last season. But his debut this season was delayed by an arm injury – continuing a trend, as he missed a month last season with a fracture in his pitching elbow – and then had a fight with the organization over his rehab process.
I confess to not having a handle on all the details; if I understand things correctly, he also took on Scott Boras as his agent during this time frame, and Boras has already picked a fight with the Royals over their rehab process (the Carlos Beltran affair of 2000). One way to look at this is that Gutierrez has some growing up to do. Then again, given my opinion of the Royals’ training staff, it’s hard to be too upset with the kid.
In any case, Gutierrez finally regained his health and was assigned to Wilmington two weeks ago. Working out of the bullpen, he allowed just three hits and one walk in eight innings, striking out 10…and then earlier today he made his first start for the Blue Rocks and threw four hitless innings, with a walk and 3 Ks. We’re only talking about 12 innings, but those are 12 damn impressive innings. He seems healthy again if nothing else, and his upside rivals anyone in the organization. I’ll give him a Grade B- for now, though I’m tempted to just give him an incomplete.

hmm, very encouraging
Seems like a guy the Rangers scouts must have really seen something. The times he’s pitched he’s been really impressive. I trust our dudes here, although i did like Timmy Smith, i liked Mitch Moreland better. Manny Pina is not much better than a back up catcher and we have a mini-Pina in De Los Santos who might be better… We could have a steal. I also have zero problem with him having a problem with his rehab, the Royal’s trainers are famously bad.

Baseball America’s pre-season report here
He pitched at 88-92 mph early in the 2008 season, but was at 90-95 mph with good life at the end of the year. He has power and 12-to-6 break on a curveball that buries itself just as it reaches the plate. He also shows some feel for the changeup."
I’m liking it more and more as I found out the details.

That's why JD is so smart: he doesn't try to steal too much from the Royals too fast

Eeh, I don't think so...
One of the great things about Holland was how quickly he moved through the system. Gutierrez could be in Double A next year if he’s healthy, but even then he would be the same age as Holland this year.
Plus Gutierrez is a righty…

Health concern
I hope he’s over it, but the downside is obviously the health issue. I agree with your point on the whole, fingers crossed he can keep his newfound health. Elbow issues = not fun
I think a broken elbow sounds not as bad to me
i guess because its bones and not ligaments being messed up and bones seem to be better off in a pitching motion than Ligaments… although i know nothing about this.

Yep
seems like a bone could heal on its own and not require surgery, assuming it was not a complex fracture. Seems like ligament or cartilage damage would be worse.

Great buy low deal!
He is only 22, has good stats and could be a breakout candidate for us. I would certainly send him to fall ball to get some extra work and send him right to Frisco for 2010 and LET HIM STAY THERE ALL SEASON!
It may give us an option of putting him or Feliz in rotation someday and the other in the bullpen. Gutierrez is a nice addition to the “next wave” of pitchers. Main, Beavan, Poveda, Font, etc.
I like this deal. I like dealing position players for young pitchers anytime! I don’t believe this is a deal to then flip him for a 3B. We have plenty of two week options at 3B… Davis, Vizquel and then German.
Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!
He was headed to the AFL for KC
I suppose this guy will fill that last AFL slot the Rangers left open. [note the article calls it a sore shoulder and not a sore arm – hmmmm]
Ah you just beat me to that AFL note…

Yea, Carolina LG = High A
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Then if there's room and he
pitches well in the AFL, spring training he should be in AA the whole season. Making him repeat High-A when spots are already going to be tough to come by seems counter productive.
If the Car League is HiA then he would have to bump either Reed or Hogan off
to get on with Texas. Only two A balls guys per team. So, maybe he isn’t going to the AFL for us.
Gutierrez
Prior to the season, Gutierrez was ranked as a B- prospect by Sickels and the No. 7 prospect in the organization by Baseball America.
BA says that last year he worked 88-92 early in the year and 90-95 with sink by the end of the season. Said he has a power 12-6 curve and shows feel for a changeup. He missed all of May 2008 with a hairline fracture in his elbow, so I wonder if that has acted up again this year. His 2008 numbers are great with over 10 Ks per nine innings and a good walk rate. This year appears to have been a lost year for him, but if he is healthy, he definitely has talent.
The Rangers have rolled up the welcome mat and bludgeoned the Angels with it. - Josh Lewin
Kind of sounds like a Juan Dominguez to me.
Highly talented arm, not so much talent in the head.
I’m really surprised the Rangers were able to trade or him with minor leaguers. I was amazed by his sudden emergence last year, and I thought he’d be knocking on KC’s door late this season. At the very least, he seems like the type of guy a GM can use to round out a trade package for a bigger piece.
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power? Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck now. -- Tenacious D
Wow, very interesting talent for talent deal
Gutierrez is regarded as having a lot of upside. I think I like the deal. I makes some sense for KC, who can really use decent position players, and in about a year or two, all Texas will likely be able to do with these two guys is this. If you can get an arm like that, might as well do it now.
How does Gutierrez compare to Moscoso?
What did people think of Moscoso when the Rangers acquired him?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Gutierrez is a higher profile prospect who is considered to have substantially higher upside than Moscoso at the time. He actually reminds me of Armando Galarraga a bit. He was a similar level prospect, similarly ranked in a midlevel system, and he was a good stuff guy about whom there were questions on whether he was strong enough physically to start. Galarraga had battled injuries and had broken out in High A with his fastball/slider combination. He was neither able to stay healthy nor develop a reliable changeup while with the Rangers. Gutierrerz has a fastball/curveball combo that has the potential to be legitimate major league caliber, but he has to show more durability and develop his changeup (at least as of last winter, don’t know how the change has come along in his short amount of time on the mound this year) to be a starter. He seems like an interesting relief prospect, though, even if he can’t do those things, like Galarraga did.
