Rangers trade Tim Smith, Manny Pina for Daniel Gutierrez
The Rangers have reportedly traded minor league outfielder Tim Smith and minor league catcher Manny Pina to the Kansas City Royals for 22 year old RHP Daniel Gutierrez.
Our man z has a rundown on the prospects involved over at the DMN blog...basically, the Rangers traded a couple of interesting positional players with limited ceilings for an enigmatic higher-upside pitcher. I think it is fair to say that the Royals are more likely to get a major leaguer out of the deal, albeit probably a backup or role player, while the Rangers are more likely to get an impact player out of the deal.

Cool
But man, we ain’t gonna have any positional prospects outside shortstop pretty soon.

all the SS prospects we can get, a good SS prospect can usually play 3rd and 2nd also, plus move to any of the OF positions when they have a frame like Jurickson

Yeah
They gotta hit though. Of course, we’ve got plenty of talent at the major league level when it comes to offense, it’s just not producing (or producing as well as it could be) this year.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining.
I love this deal, it’s a rather typical JD snag of a high-ceiling arm. I’m just observing, this system is rather weak in the OF right now…

the organization overall is strong in the OF though
it’s just concentrated mostly at the top levels. We have ~3 more years of control for Nellie and Hamilton, ~4 years of Murphy, and Borbon is still a rookie. Boggs and Golson could be in the mix as bench players in the coming years.
You’re right about a dearth of good OF prospects. It’s not an ideal situation, but Im not too concerned for the moment. I feel like we have a few more years during which to draft some guys, or acquire some OF prospects in trades, if we have to trade some guys due to a 40 crunch. For the next 3 or so years, we should be in decent shape.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Sep 3, 2009 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Still a decent crop
Outside of the semi-established low-service ML guys (Davis, Teagarden, Salty, Borbon, Cruz, Murphy, Elvis), we still have:
1B – Smoak, Tracy?, C.Murphy
2B – Lemon
SS – L.Garcia, Profar, Sardinas
3B – Whittleman?, Mendonca
C – Telis, De los Santos, Felix
OF – Moreland, Boggs, Golson?, Gentry, Beltre, Paisano, Velasquez, Bianucci
Not as good as a year ago, but that’s because the ML club is so strong now. Still better than most (headlined by Smoak, Moreland, Profar?). I don’t think Pina and Smith hurt that much, they’re relatively replaceable. Give me the upside starting prospect.

after Smoak there isn't a top 100 prospect on that list
though Beltre may find a list somewhere and there are some younger high ceiling guys atleast

Plus, Smith is a low strikeout guy, makes contact, and yet has power potential. The Rangers don’t like contact hitters. They only want guys on the roster that strikeout often and don’t play good fundamental baseball. Smith is too smart of a hitter to play for the Rangers.
Fuck the heck?

Hey, i dont like the fact that we are gonna have to play Steve Murphy and Dustin Majewski in OKC
But, this is still a great deal IMO. Pina is barely of any value to us if we have to put him on the 40, his value gets largely negated b/c he’d take away a 40 spot from another guy, while Smith is a solid player, and a guy i liked, i have hard time seeing him contributing to us in the future with Borbon and Cruz already ahead of him

BSU fans are not used to beating real teams
Other than their win against OU, they never really play anyone that is worth a damn. They certainly appear they do not know how to win with class (and I usually hate it when people whine about the class of fans, but trying to pick a fight with the opposing teams is classless).
The BSU player is just as much to blame as the Oregon player. When you try and pick a fight with a player you know has a bad temper, it is best not to start to turn your back on him because you just might get knocked the f@#$ out.

What Blount did
was pretty awful, but the Boise State lineman can’t be let off the hook. He was dumb for talking trash and initiating contact after an emotional game, and he got what was coming to him. Hopefully Blount gets a 2-3 game suspension, but the pussy that got knocked down deserves at least a game himself.

Nope...
Blount should be gone. he was talking trash all week leading up to that game saying shit like Boise had an ass whippin’ comin’ their way. Who cares if the other guy touches your shoulder pad and talks shit. You don’t take a shot at him like that and then try to go up and fight fans in the stands. The guy is a fuckin’ idiot and should be kicked off the team.

I have a difficult time understanding this pov
It seems you’re saying:
Guy A talks shit during the week. He’s fair game, Guy B can touch him and get in his face. Anything Guy B does is excused by comments made by Guy A. Guy B essentially has a blank check. Or is there a line somewhere?

Yeah he's crazy and should be kicked off the team
But the other guy isn’t some blameless victim.

neither are the idiotic fans
who decided to further the situation. This is sports, it gets emotional. This match up was extra emotional because last season Boise delivered a chicken shit hit on the quarterback that knocked him out for much of the year (and which was the basis of Blount’s earlier comments). I think Blount should be suspended indefinitely, but that it should ultimately land at around 3-4 games, and that the Boise player should be suspended at least one game himself. This is a situations without villians or victims, just a bunch of assholes.

Stupid Question Of The Night:
The Cal League is notorious for being a hitter-friendly league, correct?
Would Gutierrez start off there? Doesn’t seem like Bakersfield is too nice to pitchers.

It has some ridiculous parks
and is pretty hitter-friendly.

I think I have to start calling him Lenny
Davis permanently, in light of this gif. Lenny, of course, is the retard played by John Malcovich in Of Mice and Men.

Ranger's Fans
This is exactly what you’re getting in Daniel. I hope you enjoy his older brother because he’s just like him. Good luck. He’s got a great arm and as you can tell (/light up the sarc) an even better attitude.
