Friday a.m. Rangers things
Boston won yesterday, so the Rangers are three back in the Wild Card, 3 1/2 back in the A.L. West.
With Michael Young out, Anthony Andro looks at the three guys who will be filling in at the hot corner until Young gets back.
Josh Hamilton is day-to-day with a pinched nerve in his back, although he hopes to be in the lineup today.
Jeff Wilson has a story about the Rangers' minor league system, and how, even with all the promotions to the majors, there is still talent on the farm.
Randy Galloway has a column up on the Rangers exceeding expectations despite their financial house being in complete disorder.
Jim Reeves has a column up about a hidden, largely unknown dwelling that is tucked away in TBIA.

Classic Galloway
He’s at the point where he has to say something positive, so he does, and then he proceeds to joke around about how awful the Rangers’ finances are and make some baseless assertions. I guess that’s as good as we can ask for.
I will give him credit, though, for this line: “Elvis Andrus is Rookie of the Year, Neftali Feliz, who is not of this planet, is Extraterrestrial of the Year…”

There was this little thing from 2006-2008
commonly referred to in LSB as “JD’s Learning Curve” that nearly killed major league baseball in DFW (until Nolan came to town) so one can certainly understand why Galloway didn’t throw bouquets towards JD.
I’m still not sure exactly what JD has done since last off-season. No trades or signings of significance were made until the Pudge deal (and that kinda fell in his lap) and we didn’t sign either of our first two draft picks.
I think Galloway is being more than a little kind with JD.

Well, no
but even if you want to go one year at a time, this year seems a smashing success. And, in response to your post about defense below, Daniels has consistenly acquired strong defensive players since the day he was hired. Calling up Andrus last year would have been pushing things quite a bit. Ryan has learned a bit of patience since he took the job, one of the few areas he probably needed growth in as an exec.

If you're fishing for compliments from me for JD
I will applaud what he did for the bully and the Pudge deal (which fell into his lap).
He didn’t adequately replace Bradley, he left Davis in The Show waaaaaaay too long and not making trades over the winter or at the deadline was inexcusable and the biggest difference b/w Texas and Boston.

less of a bad idea at the time, before the market collapsed, but I didn’t think Blalock would hit that poorly and I don’t think anyone else did, either. He just collapsed. It was a somewhat reasonable risk that turned out very badly.

Nobody could have known that at the time
We only had 10 days after the WS to make a decision on keeping Blalock. For 6 million it looked like a pretty fair price and others looked like they would be getting multi year deals at or above that price. We didn’t want to tie ourselves into a multi year deal with a DH

What about it
They had to make the decision on Blalock in early November well before the market on FAs was set. For one thing no one could have envisioned the suckitude hank would put up this year. Given a choice between Hank F and CDavis, I wanted
Hank F because CDavis was costing us games and drowning like no player I’ve ever seen before in my life.
The moment Hank F started playing every day, the June Swoon ended and we went 28-19 so I was overwhelmingly correct in that assertion.
I’m questioning the Lewinskys in here because they have a hard time admitting JD does anything wrong but they also have a hard time admitting Hank F has had any value to the Rangers.

How the hell can you argue with it?
That issue was discussed many, many times throughout June, especially the early part of that month when CD was hitting .189 and navigating thru a 3 for 44 (with 24Ks) when it was decided to heavily platoon Hank F.
CD is one of JD’s boys and we know they get more rope (see Salty) than anybody else regardless of performance and putting him in the line-up every day wasn’t going over well in the room or in the standings.
Call it an assertion that was pompous, arrogant or jackassery if you want but it was also correct.
28-19 doesn’t lie.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
You have still failed to address correlation/causation issue
How was Hank solely responsible for the 28-19 record? When you draw wrongheaded conclusions out of statistics, then they can, and do, lie.
And then to trumpet your own brilliance based on that incorrect conclusion, that’s where the pomposity and arrogance comes in.

One could make the argument
that Davis drowning and struggling had become a demoralizing distraction to the locker room, and JD addressing it by sending him down was a message to the rest of the team that the goal was to win this year, not simply “play the kids, who cares about our record”.
So in other words, I think it is reasonable to hypothesize that the “28-19” that JW keeps mentioning was in part because Davis was sent down (even if Blalock replacing him didn’t yield any real improvement).
Go Rice Owls!
I don't have time to do it
But look up the runs scored per game prior to the demotion and during the 28-19 run. If there’s not a statistically significant difference, that sort of kills the argument and suggests (OH NO!) that other factors might have been responsible for that record.
"You dont know much do you, Big Steve?"
--Finnerty.Fan on Aug 13, 2009 5:13 PM PDT
well
statistically the Rangers played far, far, far better in July than June. Both offense and pitching. It isn’t even close (less than 4rs/game in June to almost 5rs/game in July; about 4.5RA/game in June to less than 4RA/game in July).
But I don’t think the fact the Rangers turned things around then is in question. I’m just throwing kindling on the fire by siding a teeny bit with Josey by saying that it may not be coincidental that the turnaround was roughly timed with Davis’s demotion (I don’t know why Blalock ever gets mentioned). But then again, I never drank the Davis koolaid and am just a hater.
Go Rice Owls!
Actually
I’ve heard many critiques of JD in here from everybody. Being an apologist for anyone is stupid. Facts speak for themselves. Blalock wasn’t the answer at first. The team won despite Davis or Blalock. It’s what good teams do. Teams well constructed or flexible like the Rangers. Who is responsible for that atmosphere? Who has spent the past 3 years working towards that end? Yeppers, it’s John Daniels.

As Hout passed Blount in the post-game celebration he pointed at Blount, clearly said something insulting, and then slapped him on the shoulder. The reason he didn’t see the punch coming was because his own coach was pulling him aside to politely point out that he was being a jackass. Not to sound like a third-grader, but he started it and if anyone wants to cry about the need to eliminate this scourge from the game then that does matter.
Does that excuse Blount at all? No way. You’ve got be to bigger than that, especially later on when it was the fans who were doing the taunting. (Fans who should probably have kept their mouth shut too. Blount would have ripped them in half if they didn’t have security to protect them.) He should be suspended for multiple games, but if Hout gets off with nothing but a sore jaw that’ll be too bad.

Please
guys talk shit all the time. I don’t care if the kid called the other guy’s mom a whore. You don’t punch someone. You damn sure don’t do it on a football field in front of a dozen witness and where national television cameras may catch you. Hout is a loud mouth asshole, which for the uninitiated means he’s like a lot of college jocks. That doesn’t mean he deserved to hit hit. Blout should have knocked him on his ass during a play on the field calling it a block or something. Sucker punching just makes him a pussy.
However,
If Hout’s coach hadn’t pulled him away right as Blout was winding up, it would have been a hit straight on. Hout’s coach just said on ESPN that both matters are internal to their own teams. He will discipline Hout who was also, even according to his own coach, clearly in the wrong. Blout’s retalliation went overboard, but this is how fights escalate.

Wilson article
Justin Smoak and Martin Perez headline the next wave, and the belief is those two will be in a Rangers uniform next year.
Is this a throwaway line, or do the Rangers really expect that Perez could reach the majors next year?
"You can probably stick a fork in the Rangers' playoff chances for 2009." - AJM on 7/26 with the team 4.5 games out
That caught my attention too. It would seem to me to be the type of situation that Perez would have to
force himself into the picture. So, I’m not sure what Wilson’s getting at.
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power? Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck now. -- Tenacious D
It's probably not a bad assumption that Perez will get a look next year, I've been assuming the same thing
The club likes to challenge its top prospects, that’s no secret. Perez is in Double A at age 18. If he pitches well in Frisco (and maybe OKC next season), I could see the club bringing him up as a reliever in July or August.
"You dont know much do you, Big Steve?"
--Finnerty.Fan on Aug 13, 2009 5:13 PM PDT
I think it depends how Perez starts the year
He will be in AA at the start of the year. If he’s hot and promotes to AAA around the all-star break, I can see a late summer call up.
If he’s average, I see him spending most of the year in AA and a late summer promotion to AAA just to see how he handles it.
Perez doesn't have to be added to the 40
till 2011 right? If that’s the case then there’s no way he pitches in Arlington next season unless there are an ungodly rash of injuries. The 40 crunch is going to be tight and I can’t imagine they want him pitching in the big leagues before he turns 20. There’s really no need to rush him. He can pitch all year in Frisco then start in AAA the following year. If he blows them out of the water then you can call him up when the next injury occurs. I have to think they’re going to want their six years of team control 21-27 rather than 19-25.
TINSTAAPP
If a player is good enough to pitch in the big leagues, especially a stud prospect, you put him in the big leagues instead of keeping him in the minors and risking injury.
The 40 didn’t trump all for the Giants when Tim Lincecum was clearly ready, and it shouldn’t trump Venezuelan Lightning’s readiness either.

Come on let's be realistic here
Perez is having struggles at AA. I can reasonably expect more next year. He’s not going to tear through there like Holland did last year. That said,
Millwood
Feldman
Holland
Hunter
McCarthy
Feliz
Harrison
Moscoso
Poveda
Kiker
are all ahead of him. Guys like Gomez, Guiterrez, Kirkman, Swanson, and Ballard who all have to be added before him are probably in the pecking order in front of him too. Oh, add Scheppers in there as well. Waiting till 2011 is hardly significantly holding him back.
Swanson and Ballard should not be on that list

call him up no matter what, I’m saying if his performance and stuff indicate he’s ready don’t wait just to wait. The depth you indicate gives them flexibility so at least they won’t be tempted to do something stupid with him just because they have no other options.
You’re assuming things that I’m not saying. If the club thinks he is ready I can see a September looksee.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I understand your point
t ball, and it’s not unreasonable but for me I just don’t see the point of a Sept. call up. If he’s just getting a few innings and not even going to play in the playoffs then why start his clock early. Waiting till mid-may of the next season is good sense.
Besides he’s going to be pretty good next year but not spectacular. He still needs time to mature and build up innings. He’s not ready to throw a lot even next year.
This sounds like a large steve comment

What if Perez is a key piece
to this team making the playoffs next year? If the team feels he’s a better option in the rotation or the bullpen then someone else, they shouldn’t be risking games (assuming they are in the playoff hunt) just to try and avoid a 40 roster crunch. I think for now, the 40 crunch is a bit overstated anyways. There’s a lot of deadspace on the roster that will be cleared out or can be cleared out by next November.

People worry about the 40 way too much
Way, way too much.
Bringing a kid up fast isn’t going to screw us over in a year because of the 40.
Giving a high school kid a major league deal isn’t going to screw us over because of the 40.
The 40 matters when you are desperately bringing up AAAA middle infielders forcing you to drop decent prospects, because you were dumb and signed a utility infielder who can’t play 2b.
Go Rice Owls!
Would Perez getting the Feliz treatment late next year surprise anyone?

Don't know if the Rangers expect him to
But since they’ve been putting him on the same basic path as Feliz, my guess is that they think its a possibility. I think the needs of the Major League team will dictate whether Perez sees the Majors next year regardless of how well he does.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Abreu article
on his impact on the Angels.
I find it interesting that the Rangers led the league in runs/gm in 2008 and were 2nd in OBP with Bradley. This year Abreu is having the same effect on the Angels. Just what does a hitting coach do?
Some quotes…
“Swing at more pitches in the strike zone, and you have a better chance of getting hits,” Hunter said. “I’ve been doing that.”
“They see how I handle situations, how I prepare, how I stay focused on the game, and I think the young guys have picked it up by watching, following the example,” said Abreu, who ranks eighth in the AL with an average of 4.15 pitches per plate appearance.
“He helps with my preparation for the game — when I go to the plate, I have a plan,” Izturis said of Abreu. “I try to prepare for situations in the game and have good at-bats.”
“He’s always talking about pitchers and what they do in certain situations, when to take more pitches to try to get the pitcher into a long inning,” Aybar said. “That helps.”
“I don’t think we were slashing because Vlad was here,” Manager Mike Scioscia said, when asked if one player can affect the personality of a lineup. “Maybe that was the perception because Vlad was such a free swinger that he set a tone, but I don’t know.”

Ownership situation
Galloway is an idiot, but he does make some valid points about the ownership situation.
At this point, I would be very surprised if we keep any of our free agents except maybe Vizquel and Pudge (if Teagarden is dealt). Also, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the instruction comes down (from either Hicks or MLB) to trade Millwood, since I suspect his contract is moveable to a team that needs a solid mid-rotation starter without a long-term commitment.
I could easily see us with a $45 million payroll next season. I could also see us contending in the west with a $45 million payroll, provided that a rotation of Feldman, Holland, Hunter, McCarthy and Feliz would hold up for a full season.
Millwood?
The Rangers are not going to trade Millwood next year…
1. His contract is not that attractive
2. He will be the veteran presence in the rotation next year.
I just don’t see it happening
Millwood
1. I didn’t say his contract was attractive. I said it was tradeable.
2. If it’s based solely on on-the-field considerations, he won’t be traded. I’m not convinced any moves this offseason will be based solely on-the-field considerations. If a $12-15 million obligation can be moved off the books without hurting this team’s long-term value, it may be a situation where JD is told to do it.
by Darrell McKown on Sep 4, 2009 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions
Millwood wil not be traded...
But why do you say his contract is not attractive? I would say, for the way he played this year, a one year, 12-15 million contract for Millwood is absolutely an attractive contract. Any team that plans on contending would have to consider such a contract if Millwood was a free agent instead of under Rangers control.
by Mark from OC on Sep 4, 2009 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

A year of Millwood plus two draft picks when his contract runs out is a pretty decent deal for $12M.

Free agents
I think they would like to keep Byrd if they could. I personally don’t care if he leaves, but I’m pretty sure that I think more highly of Brandon Boggs than the organization does.
Although I didn’t articulate it well, I also include not getting Ben Sheets in that same “no free agent” concept, as I think there’s a general belief that he would be very interested in signing here if we had the money.
Frankly, I have no issue with having a roster of Young and all pre-free agency guys, taking the payroll down next year, and then getting the ownership situation resolved so we have the capacity to take it back up when these guys hit arbitration and free agency.
