Crisp, clean game
We need more of those against teams like that.
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

White Sox with 17 hits
through 5 innings….wow, massive BoSox pitching fail
If you want some slack, bring your own rope.
I don't think so.
His stuff looked very good today until the 6th.
Contact against him wasn’t hard and he got a ton of grounders.
My question was obviously leading, but I agree
He was dominant, despite the low strikeout total.
by Brett Perryman on Sep 4, 2009 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions
The data indicates otherwise
Last year, people were using Galarraga as an example of how a pitcher has influence on BABIP, and he came crashing back down to earth.
by Adam J. Morris on Sep 4, 2009 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions
so batters should have the same babip against a 65 mph batting practice machine
as johan santana?
the preceding post was a great success.
Hmmm...
I was going to scuff, but a quick review of the pitchers with the highest percentage of cutters thrown this year shows that they have lower than average BABIPs.
That’s something that I should get more data on and see if it holds true for a larger group.
by Adam J. Morris on Sep 4, 2009 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions
any significant correlation between pitch mix
and FIP, across all pitchers, would be strong evidence in favor of pitchers being able to influence BABIP.
Wouldn’t it?
It just stands to reason
that someone like Feldman who has an uncanny ability to make guys hit the ball on the skinny part of their bat won’t fit the normal model. I suppose that the question is whether it really has become an inherent ability of his or if he’s just on a roll with that. But contact against Feldman is just not similar to contact against the average pitcher on the whole. And he is probably a bigger outlier in that regard than anyone going right now, so he would seem to have wider possible independence from FIP and similar stats than anyone else.
by Brett Perryman on Sep 4, 2009 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think that Galarraga and Feldman
are very similar, people griping about Galarraga aside. To me, the problem with FIP is that it is not a 100% case, but it is treated as such. If we take all of the people who are outliers with FIP, the trend will undoubtedly be to regress to the middle. But that does not mean that every player will snap back, and in Feldman’s case it especially doesn’t consider his almost constant improvement, over the course of both last season and this season.
I think that it is very likely that Feldman’s ERA, BA against, stuff like that will fall back next season. But I also think that if he falls back to a 4.6 ERA or something like that, it will have more to do with his regression in stuff than the law of averages. His stuff is nasty.
by Brett Perryman on Sep 4, 2009 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions
His stuff is nasty AND
you just have to love the way that his stuff has trended. Ever since he switched to over the top, he just keeps getting better and better and better…

But it was a damn good idea to change him back. The rest of the credit goes to Feldman and I guess some to Maddux.

The tieing run in that situation would be 4 batters deep.. don't think so

ie: assuming the pitcher does not face any extra (gives up a hit/walk/error) batters, he only has to face the 4th batter in a 5-1 game

So...
I have tickets to the game on 9/15.
I thought I was going to have to give them to my dad to give away because I am preferentially set for a trial to start that day.
But that case settled this afternoon.
So now I’ll be going up there to see the game, and hopefully, it will be a game that has some serious meaning to it.
its against oakland....
i traded in some primo seats on a raincheck for some decent seats(lower level-3rd base side) at that same game on the 15th. what was really cool was that the seats were a gift from a friend to a yankee game that was actually played and finished, just started really late due to a badass rain storm. so i get to see the rangers beat the yanks on what i remeber seeming like staying up late on a school nite; as well as seeing a game on the last leg of what has seemed like a magical season from the start. if u see ryan #37 strolling, say hello.

true story here…One day I was in Irving near the Irving Art Center and Airport Fwy and I saw this outrageous blond driving like a sports car and I pulled in behind her at the corner of Airport Fwy. Very crowded there then that Sunday. I was second out and out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement. I thought she was rolling so I released the breaks. BOOM hit the Jag. Shit…Turns out she is Kevin Kennedy’s girlfriend and they were moving a couple of cars to a garage. Kevin was still the manager of the Rangers at that time. Anyway, we pull off and wait for Kevin to show up. He does and he gets out of the car he was driving and man o man, large guy. He introduced himself as Kevin Kennedy manager of the Texas Rangers. Had a big cowboy trophy buckle that said Texas Rangers. We looked at the bumper of the Jag and he rubbed on it for a minute and said he thought it could be fixed with compounding it. No damage. Big sigh of relief on my part. I get in the car after thanking him and off I went. Seemed like a pretty nice guy. On a baseball note, he was fired about 7 days later.

Wait. There is more...
There will come a day when we have a player make the final out at second base (on a bad base-running play) with the tying run in the on-deck circle — and we’ll tell the player to go home. Just goodbye. We’re not there yet."

the single season record for adjusted ERA+ according to baseball reference is 294 in 1880 by Tim Keefe (23 yrs old at the time)… he pitched 105 innings
Neftali Feliz is only at 19.2 IP, but his ERA+ is at 987…. I wonder what it will be after tonight’s 2.1 innings
20 innings

Great game tonight...
Is Feldman really going to become a TORP? The guy has been great lately. The idea of Feldman being a TORP with Feliz, Holland, and Perez having a chance to get there as well is very exciting. Throw Hunter in the mix and damn, this team could have some serious pitching for years to come.
Feliz is just amazing. That guy has to be a starter next year. Please don’t waste all that talent in the ’pen. Please.
Big hit from CD. That inning was huge. Murphy beats out a DP ball. Cruz comes back from 0-2 and gets a walk. Pudge finds a hole for a single, and CD lines a opposite field double. That was the game. The way Feldman was throwing I was very confident the Rangers would get a W after that inning.
Nice to pick up a game on the BoSox too. Just to bad the Royals had to fuck up and lose to the Halos. At least they get Zack tomorrow.
