AJM Pontificates for an Oriole Blogger
An Oriole blogger had some questions for me about the Rangers, since Texas is in town this weekend, and I of course was happy to oblige.

At this point, I’d say the Rangers have a better chance of catching the Rangers than the BoSox, for a couple of reasons. First
Me confused.

Now I go back to finish.

AJM...
do you really think the BoSox are that much better than the Halos?
Right now I’d say it’s the otehr way around.

to me...
…it would seem to make sense that Boston is better because they can hit a ton and have very good starting pitching. However the Angels have some kind of voodoo magic going on and until recently seem to win even the most unlikely of games. Winning games for such a prolonged period means a team is good, however, no matter how they got there.
In the end I’d say they’re about even.

I have a real problem...
with this statement :
Boston is better because they can hit a ton
I’m not impressed with Boston’s offense at all. The top of their lineup is pretty good. Ellsbury, Pedroia, Martinez and Youk. However after that I’m not a big believer in Lowell, Varitek, Ortiz, Drew, Gonzalez, and even Bay has really struggled lately. I think he Halos offense is much better than Boston’s.

Angels offense is undoubtedly better.
…but they’re not a patient offense. Boston takes a smart approach that wears out opposing pitchers. They also score more than their share of runs when all is said and done. That and their starting rotation makes them a tough team to beat in a long series.
It’s those two factors together that probably make them a better team than the Angels, but it’s pretty close.

Boston's starters.
Lester
+
A (temporarily?) broken Beckett, Buchholz, old man Wakefield with his bad back, Dice-K and his sore shoulder, and Paul Byrd.
Aside from Lester, I’m trying to find the “very good” part.
Well they're better than the LaLaLa's
Which is what we were discussing. You disagree with that?

Boston is better because they can hit a ton and have very good starting pitching.
This is a fairly definitive statement.
And their rotation, as currently constructed, is not better than the Angels’. Especially if Kazmir’s velocity is back and Saunders is actually fixed. Their bullpen, however, is lightyears better than Anaheim’s.
I don't know.
I’d rather face the LAAAAAAAAA rotation than the Sox because who knows about their “ifs”. If Kazmir can’t get deep into a game, for instance, you get to feast off that shitty bullpen they’ll throw at you. I haven’t looked at the numbers so, yeah, I could be wrong, but it seems like the Red Sox starters give them innings, and when they don’t they have a very good bullpen to go to.
Long story short. The Angels really don’t concern me with their pitching. Their relentless offense is what scares the shit out of me. With Boston you have a patient offense who is methodical in their approach and effective, and pitching that is pretty good, too. And Boston has won in the playoffs before. The LaLaLa’s have not. I’m not sure how much that means but it may mean something.

Lackey's won something before.

The pitching mound in Arlington is forever cursed with the evil vibe of Vicente Padilla.
Hey la, hey, Halo...
OT: Elvis Andrus quiz
Without looking (or checking the morning thread where I posted it), guess Andrus OPS since the ASB?

good quiz
Here’s a link if you wanna siliently check your guess.
The thing I’ve noticed recently with Elvis is how much better he’s driving the ball. His slug reflects what my eyes are seeing.
just numbs my mind how good he could end up being
With all the buzz surrounding Feliz, I think what Elvis is doing is flying a little under the radar and that’s a shame because we are watching something that doesn’t happen often. A 20/21 year old SS come up from AA and play incredible defense and make his adjustments at the plate the way he is doing – it’s pretty amazing.

He's pretty damn good.
Hopefully borbon is for real because they could make for a very disruptive 1/2 punch at the top of the order. Opposing pitchers would shit their pants with them on the bases.

Nelson Cruz has been even more impressive
since the all-star break. SSS but still….

300/400/600. That is impressive.

Now, if he could just run into an RBI or two along the way, he'd be a complete player!!

well i looked, but wow
my guess would have been a good 70 points lower. nice work elvis.
the preceding post was a great success.
Boston's Rotation?
I only see two consistent quality starters:
Lester and Beckett. Buchholz is inconsistent, and the other two Byrd and Tazawa suck, and Wakefield is pretty iffy with his bad back.
They should have hung on to Penny. So, I see this rotation as being Boston’s achilles heel.
I think the Angel’s Rotation is better: Lackey, Weaver, Santana, and now Kazmir, with the lone weakness Saunders who is still better then Byrd or Tazawa or even Wakefield.
So, think Angels are better.
