I think that scoring 3 runs in the first, and then the offense rolling over and playing dead the rest of the game, is even more frustrating than the offense just sucking the whole 9 innings.

I was at the Frisco/Midland game

Gutierrez was decent. FB around 88, I don’t think it ever hit 90. His offspeed was fair in the upper 70’s. First ER in the first he gave up was small ball stuff with a base hit, sac, SB, and then another hit. Steven Murphy bombed a 2 run homer for Frisco into the wind at least 390ft. It was all tied up going into the 9th. Midland’s DH Sulentic hit a 1-2 pitch with 2 outs into the right field bullpen for the walk off. Hamilton just left a fastball over the plate. Really a great game. Oh, Midland’s pitcher Storey has just nasty stuff. Not much velocity on the fastball, but Frisco couldn’t touch his stuff

Philips wasn't really sharp.

Lots of fly balls that were hit really well, just at the defense. His twitchyness bothers me when he pitches. I thought he was going to snap his neck watching all those fly balls go over his head as if they were HR’s.

The offense was a bag of suck except for Greene. He Whittleman looked lost at the plate and Murphy was all or nothing with his swing. Looked off balance also.

It rained for a good 45 minutes before the game so the ground was pretty muddy making it slow. Lemon or anyone for that matter couldn’t get much speed on the basepaths. Was caught stealing 2nd in the 1st inning.

It's weird

Wash will bat Cruz cleanup against lefties, particularly finesse lefties. But not against RH power pitchers or the rare power lefty. And as regularly documented, Cruz’ splits against LHP are not good at all – but he kills RH power pitching. It’s almost like Wash is intentionally making hurdles for him.

He looked good for the first couple of months but he just can’t seem to do it over the course of a full season. I wouldn’t mind seeing us put him on the DL for an “injury” before the option vests. If we’re going to pay $12 million a year for a pitcher I think there are probably better options out there. Probably not going to happen though, he only has a couple more innings to go before it kicks in, plus we’re still in the race.

So Sheets is coming back next year.

Any chance a team like the Orioles throws more cash at him for similar years and he goes elsewhere?

by oc on Sep 5, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Possibly, I doubt it though.

But even after Sheets there’s still going to be some other guys out there.

From MLBTR:

Ben Sheets (30)
Erik Bedard (31)
Rich Harden (28)
Tim Hudson (34) – $12MM mutual option with a $1MM buyout
John Lackey (31)
Cliff Lee (31) – $8MM club option with a $1MM buyout
Jason Marquis (31)
Jarrod Washburn (35)
Brandon Webb (31) – $8.5MM club option with a $500K+ buyout

Of course a few of those guys might not end up being available, but who knows. Plus there might end up being better options on the trade market. I’d at least like to take Millwood’s money off the books so we would have some options, even if the worst case scenario is that we just end up resigning him for a lesser contract.

Feldman is the only guy im really confident in right now. And yeah I naysayed him in the presseason, hes amazed me lately and every player/manager loves his cutter.. hes in there and in a 5 game series would probably get two starts.

Then you’ve got Hunter, Holland, Nippert, McCarthy, Millwood…

Its not exactly 4 cy youngs and millwood. Control issues, health issues, young inconsistency.. they’ve all got their problems. Is there one of those guys you start twice?

On the whole Hunter has probably pitched the best of them the past couple months, but if it does come down to it I would probably just go with the hot hand next. It could conceivably be Millwood, though its not looking like it.

Everything after Feldman in Game 1 a complete toss-up.

I think you may be right about going with the hot hand. Do you chance your arm by starting Feldman in a Game 4 at home, or roll with Hunter, who probably gets one of those starts (don’t know where). I’m thinking Holland gets an opportunity, unless he finishes poorly.

My guess right now, in spite of Millwood’s struggles recently:

My list is go with the hot hand

did you hear the stat they had during the game that Millwood’s era for his last 8 starts was over 5.5? I don’t remember the exact number I just remember it was fucking embarrassing.

Right this moment it would be,

Feldman
Hunter
Holland
McCarthy
Nippert
Millwood

by Hull Fan on Sep 5, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe it's a dumb thought...

But I was having the discussion today about possibly trying to go game 1 of a series with the bullpen? Give feliz, cj, oday and ff one time through the batting order and that should get it done. Then I would do a tandem start style thing with feldman going 6ish and then holland finishing it off. Then Hunter in for game 3 with the bullpen possibly ready to finish out the game, or bmac/nippert ready to jump in.

my better is better than your better.

Kevin Millwood you suck!!!!

I see you’re back to your sweaty fat old man laboring ways, circa 2007-2008

You should be embarassed to call that 88 mph cheese spread cheese, I swear you’re one burrito shy of being Eddie Guardado.

Anyways enjoy your chicken fried steak with fried mushrooms, Don’t choke on that like you have been the second half of this year.

I hope you don’t get to 180 innings so you can go out and get what you’re really worth which is not 12 million.

HH is that a sock in your puppet or are you happy to see me?

by BigGuns on Sep 5, 2009 6:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

millwood realistically is a 4th or 5th starter at best right now!

man i was sure hoping to get within 1 game of those redsox, granted the offense was anemic after they scored those early runs, but millwood been blowing the chrome off trailer hitches for the longest time..we’re not going to make playoff unless millwood starts giving this ballclub some quality starts, has anyone seen the last time he had a quality start?

Hopefully we won't be hearing any more comparisons of Millwood to Feldman this year.

Also, the Black Hole is a failed bit yet these Mensas keep thinking it will work.

CD now 12 for 42 (with 3 bs infield hits among those 12 hits) since coming back up.

Heh @ the infield hits comment

how many warning track fly balls, a couple chased down just in time rather than high flyouts, are in there?

CD has just looked ok. He hasn’t been great, but he doesn’t look overmatched. A step in the right direction.

So apparently you degrade Crush's performance as "luck"

when Hack F. was “unlucky” to be hitting flyballs to right-field the entire time?

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

CD has 11 RBI’s in 11 games since getting called back…..Hank has 11 RBI’s in his last 29 games started, but I’m sure all of them were huge.

by selppuc on Sep 5, 2009 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Give it up

when a team “outperforms” its pythag every year, by unheard of margins, for several straight years, it’s time to stop copping-out and calling it lucky and acknowledge that there’s a clear blind spot.

When it happens 3, 4, or 5 times in as many years, it’s just not “luck” anymore. It’s a lazy excuse to avoid addressing what shortcomings the metric clearly has.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 5, 2009 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's true.

When you flip a coin 50 times and it comes up heads 5 times in a row, it’s time to stop calling it chance and start looking for leprechauns and fairies.

by benmor78 on Sep 5, 2009 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that's a fair analogy

Because clearly no other factors could possibly play into a game, just like a coin flip.

And clearly a sample size of 810 games is the same as a sample size of 5 coin flips.

first off

This is Sept., nobody goes on the DL unless it is the 60 because the team wants to call someone up. Secondly, I think he is just fatigued and not necessarily hurt. I wouldn’t mind them skipping his next turn in the rotation but they won’t cut or DL him. Remember, he is thier “ace”.
