Labor Day Rangers stuff
Jeff Wilson writes that the Rangers were hurt by falling behind early once again, although given the offense's performance, it wouldn't have mattered if it were a big early deficit or a small early deficit.
Evan Grant's game story focuses on the lifelessness of the offense right now.
Josh Hamilton probably won't play during this three game set in Cleveland, after having gotten another shot in his back yesterday. There's also some discussion in that piece about Julio Borbon playing in the outfield, and the Rangers' plan for him.

Not that it would have mattered much but...
could Borbon have run down that ball in CF that allowed the first two runs when Byrd dived and missed?
This offense without Josh and MY for the next week could be very painful to watch. On the positive side, Ian does seen to be hitting the ball much better lately and Nellie is still doing pretty well.
Anyone think Holland ends up back in the ‘pen? I really don’t want to see it, but wonder if the Rangers may be considering it right now.

You have to think he's about one more of these starts away
from going to the bullpen. He just hasn’t really had anything his last several starts and these games are more and more important.
BMac, Nippert, Millwood, Hunter and Feldman is probably a sufficient enough rotation. Of course, Milly looks a little overexposed out there as well, and do we really trust Nippert more than Holland?
Go Rice Owls!
this is the time of the year to knee jerk
Anything less than a big hot streak is gonna fall short. It looks to me like 93 wins is a good number to shoot for, likely to make postseason with that. We’d need to go 17-9 to finish the season. Possible, but they got start playing well RIGHT FREAKING NOW.
Less than a sweep against Cle and I think playoff hopes are on life support.
Must. win. today.

I think that's right.
93 wins seems to be the target. Regardless, I think we’re going to be rooting for an LAA sweep of Boston by the time that series comes around.
93 is the target?
The target is one more win than the Red Sox. Nothing else matters

Knee jerk
that time begins Jan. 1 and runs through Dec. 31.
Agree, though, the team is in a weakened state without Young and Hamilton, and Millwood and Holland ineffective lately. Really need Tommy to make CLE feel deaf, dumb, and blind.

93 wins will make it interesting.
I got the magic number at 94.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

94 wins
would require finishing out 18-8. Either way, the point is that this team can’t lose very many more games.
I look at it sorta like a reverse magic number. There’s 28 games left, and we can’t afford to lose more than 8, possibly 9 of those.

Using boundary numbers
(boundary like insurance actuaries do, so that the result is practically assured)
To win the AL West, go 21-5 with head to head vs. LAA of 5-2
To win the AL Wild Card, go 19-7
Tall order to assure either outcome.

Fewest possible assumptions
Coupled with position as a result of head to head versus LAA, and the assumption that Boston could possibly win 2/3 of their remaining games.

Boston is going to need to help us out a bit
because they’ve gone 17-9 in their last 26 games.
They have 15 left at home / 11 on the road.
They also have a championship pedigree (lots of experience in winning) so it’s going to be a tall order.
The best thing that could happen to the Rangers (other than getting hot) is for Beckett to continue to struggle (which makes today’s start uber important).

Doesn't help that Girardi is going to be resting a lot of guys for that series @NYY at the end of the month.
It behooves the MF Yankees to knock the Red Sox outta da playoffs if they can.
so I expect maximum effort from them.

I like having options between LAAA and Boston
but I think the Red Sox are more vulnerable.
The Red Sox have been very mediocre since the AS Break and their pitching (other than Lester) hasn’t been very good. Beckett (who goes today) hasn’t been good and Wakefield can’t move. The rest of their rotation ain’t that good, buddy.
LAAA just looks too good and they constantly find a way to win. I think some of them know they left a lotta money on the table last year and there’s now a sense of urgency to get it done this year.
You are correct in saying that we need to start our hot streak today in Cle.

Understood, but
There is no such thing as a cheap shot at Blalock. As much as I like him and want him to do well (image Simon Cowell saying this) he’s a disappointment to himself and everyone else. And please, it doesn’t take any comparisons to other players. The point stands in isolation.

It was an unnecessary cheapshot, Ed. Blalock went 2 for 4 on Wednesday and didn't play for three nights in a row.
The player that should have sat was Borbon (who is coming back to earth quickly) because Murphy plays far more LF than he DH’s.
Say what you want about Blalock (who has been disappointing)but he’s had a better season than Chris Davis.
This latest little streak by Davis leaves me unconvinced because he has 2 walks in nearly 50 plate appearances and is only 12 for 45 (with three little dink infield hits).
Maybe I’m wrong…the Rangers just need to go 17-9 the rest of the way to prove it.

Carpenter’s to lose at the moment. To me he gets the nod over teammate Wainwright, and the Cards have been playing the best baseball in the league.
it's close between the 2
lincecum though has a 10.47 k/9 vs Carpenter’s 6.79. That equates to 233 Ks vs 119. they have virtually the same numbers other than that across the board. Those numbers don’t account for Carpenter’s 10 K day today. Either way, it will be decided this month and both deserve it. I think Lincecum gets the nod because he has pitched all year/
