Redsox lost.. Hunter vs a scrub... Neftali, cj and frankie all rested...
No excuses.

yep
but as much as I want to see the Angels lose, the playoffs are between us and the Red Sox. We have a shot against the Angels, but we would probably have to sweep our remainder games against them or at least only lose one.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

I just want them both to keep losing.

well, no not a scrub
I know he was one of the bigger prospects in the lee deal.
but he had a 4.64 ERA era in AAA (at 22, so yeah young) with a little better but not that much better peripherals, and has given up 12 baserunners in 3 innings so far in the mlb.
We should beat him.
the preceding post was a great success.

eh, he's a scrub in terms of who he is at the ML level
right now, you cant expect him to be any good right now

Doesn't matter how good Hunter pitches if we don't score a run.

Working while going to school...
certainly makes it harder to do the regular 4 year deal.
I was working full time while going to school. I didn’t want to have any student loan debt after I graduated. However, not only did it take me 5 years rather than 4, but my grades suffered a little because of it too. There were times that I just didn’t have the time to do all the readings assigned, et al.
The other thing that really screwed me up, and I wonder if any of you guys had this happen to you, was after 2 years the University switched from a quarter system to semesters. That screwed with my credits as they did some credit conversion shit that put me behind a semester as well.
Still, as Ben says, undergraduate degrees have lost a lot of their luster. With all the tech schools, internet degrees and classes, and just plain more people getting degrees, they certainly don’t take you as far as a degree used to. Oh well, still a great experience.

1. Will be a win or
2. Will be a loss
So yes I guess you are right they could lose this game.

Raining
Official word has yet to come from the fine folks here, but the Rangers-Indians game is certain to be delayed by rain. First pitch is 30 minutes away, and it has been raining from more than 20 minutes. The tarp is on the field, and more rain is in the area. Great.

I don't understand the unbridled contempt for football by many on this site.
It’s a nationally-popular and entertaining sport. I understand it may not be popular with some hardcore baseball fans, but damn there’s alot of “I fucking hate football; it fucking sucks; etc” by many. It’s not figure skating or curling, for Chrissakes.

I didn't say football sucks
just that I don’t like it. I especially don’t like that during Rangers postgame shows in a season when the team is actually contending – we’re getting breathless Cowboys training camp updates where someone stubbed a pinky toe.

I think it's because the Cowboys overshadow the Rangers.
Even when they haven’t won a playoff game since the Rangers have. I personally love both.

This Is Primarily A Baseball Site
I think it’s because we’re all big Ranger fans here. I imagine if I popped up in the comments over at Blogging The Boys and started writing about the Rangers I would get a lot of flak for it.
For me, LSB is where I come to read about Rangers stuff when the rest of the Metroplex is so hot in the pants for the Cowboys that they can’t think straight. I love me some football, but I also love me some baseball.
I agree with lisa w that it irritates the hell out of me to have micro-coverage of everything Cowboys when the Rangers are still clawing for a playoff spot with their best record in years and a team that has a lot to be excited about going forward. I don’t give a shit that one or both of our starting CBs is dinged up. Take time away from Rangers coverage when they’re not dinged up. That would be newsworthy.

Agree, of course it's a baseball site, and accordingly baseball is and should be #1,
and most folks primarily talk baseball, which is cool with me. However, during a rain delay, post game thread, etc… should someone discuss football with other people on this site that they’re familiar discussing sports with, the backlash can be irritating from some people on here.
Rather than staying out of the convo and STFU, they chime in with their fuck football comments/football sucks comments. I just don’t get why people who hate football don’t leave those folks alone to have their own convo.

I don't go into the football fanposts
to talk about baseball – why should I just put up with the football talk in a baseball thread (on a baseball site)? One or two football posts is one thing – coming into a thread and seeing huge involved subthreads of football talk is annoying.

Just leave them alone and let them be. People are going to talk about whatever, so let them.
I spend alot of time on this site…. much more than BTB. If I want to talk college football with somebody, I’m inclined to talk with someone on here I talk to… i.e., boomer1 about college football.

Seriously
do you not see where it might get on people’s nerves? Football (especially Cowboys football) is pushed so relentlessly in Dallas – can’t I have just one place where there’s no football? Why shouldn’t I expect that from a Rangers blog, in a Rangers game-thread? I mean – I have literally watched an entire sports report from a local newscast where they spent five minutes on training camp but didn’t even mention the Rangers (who were at that time in first place, and had just completed a sweep).

But the people that go “well it’s footballs season now”? Fuck them. It’s not football season until there ain’t no baseball left.

Replies here are good...
but I’m just tired of the Dallas media going all ga-ga over the Cowboys. Half of it’s because I’m jealous of their success when my team hasn’t had any, and the other half is because this season has been historic—as far as the Rangers go—and I want my team to have its due. Being forced to share parking with Jerryland is just icing on the cake. That annoyance spills over into any talk of football where I’m expecting baseball because it’s a reminder.

From Bill Simmon's latest column
He and his buddies were having their fantasy football draft in Vegas.
12:54: In a brilliant move to rattle the other married guys, Stoner starts playing online porn on his laptop. High comedy. He just took out half the room. We have guys breaking down the first scene Mark Schlereth style and wondering whether the loud actress involved has a safe word. Camp decides it’s “apple sauce” and starts screaming “APPLE SAUCE! APPLE SAUCE!” This brings down the house. Porn jokes, beer, fantasy football, pizza … have we hit every cliché of a fantasy draft with married guys yet? Are we close?
1:04: Just had a three-minute group debate about whether there’s any way to write on ESPN.com about what just happened during my Chris Cooley pick. Here’s what we settle on: “Right as I made the pick, let’s just say it was met by immediate approval by the actress on Stoner’s laptop.” There you go.

There's a lot of money coming off the books after this season.
Possibly somewhere around $30 million.
Padilla ($12 million)
Blalock ($6 million)
Byrd ($3.06 million)
Catalanotto ($4 million)
Benoit ($3.5 million)
Vizquel ($1 million)
Guardado ($1 million)
Benson ($750 k)
Jennings ($800 k)
Jones ($500 k)
Rupe ($416,310)
It will be interesting to see what happens with Byrd and Omar. After the buyouts of Padilla’s and Cat’s contracts, and depending on the ownership situation, this offseason could be very interesting. A lot of options with that kind of salary relief, assuming of course payroll stays somewhere around what it is now, and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it went down.
I couldn’t even begin to speculate on what’s going to happen, but I can’t wait to find out.

Sicko had some good points.
Bowling for Columbine wasn’t really even a “liberal” movie, though. There was no conclusion. Just raised a lot of questions which were pretty valid. The right wing went nuts on it but in the end gun control wasn’t the answer. He pointed at Canada, where they have as many guns as we do and don’t have anywhere near the homicide rate. He didn’t think too much of Heston leading an NRA meeting in Denver so quickly after the shooting, but is that a liberal stance? And he questioned why places like Target were selling handgun ammunition and I think he got them to stop. That’s not something I have a problem with as a gun owner.
Anyway I thought that one was a really good movie.
by Black Francis on Sep 7, 2009 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Again, he may bring up good points, but needing to splice together two separate speeches by Heston
that give the appearance that he rushed to Denver to make a pro gun speech days after Columbine is lazy and misleading film making, much less documentary style film making.
Case in point:

Lisa, if the Bible has taught us nothing else - and it hasn't - it's that girls should stick to girls' sports, such as hot-oil wrestling, foxy boxing, and such-and-such.

But instead of blaming one of the 2 major political parties, and believing that the other side will magically save us from corporate greed and “The Man”, I just blame both, and use it to fuel my libertarian views that the Government fucks up anything it gets its hands on.

It’s the only realistic libertarian alternative at this point. Hope to limit the damage through gridlock.

That show could get pretty offbeat and surprise you every now and then. I’ll watch it occasionally but more often than not find it a little on the boring side. I’m still in a state of shock about how a pretty good concept like “idocracy” was butchered so badly.

like nowadays they have ralph just pop out of nowhere to say stupid shit rather than keep it in the context of the show. he’s just given lines b/c they know he’s a popular.

I don't think he ever said Heston rushed to make a pro-gun speech.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the film but I believe it was a very large even obviously planned well in advance and Moore’s complaint was that it wasn’t postponed. The whole nation was horrified by what happened there. I don’t know if it’s feasible to ask the NRA to postpone such an event but it’s a fair question to ask.
Anyway, I never cared for much for the rest of his work. TV Nation or whatever it was could be pretty good at times. I did like Bowling for Columbine. It explored a lot of topics but in the end didn’t really point a finger at any particular group. Didn’t like Fahrenheit 9/11 very much at all and while I thought Sicko brought up some good points it had a ton of bias in there. If anyone on the left has any self respect they’d admit that. But, again, it brought up some salient points.
Is he as bad as Ann Coulter? I honestly don’t know. Could be. It’s not like I follow Micheal Moore in lockstep like I do you guys with our singular baseball opinions.
by Black Francis on Sep 7, 2009 10:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The reason I lump him with AC
is because more often than not, I get this vibe that his stances are more to illicit a reaction from the extremely emotional opponents, which he then uses to illustrate his point about all conservatives being crazies. Coulter does the exact same thing to paint all liberals as bleeding heart pussies or “loony leftists”.
And I got this about the NRA event from here.
At Denver, the NRA cancelled all events (normally several days of committee meetings, sporting events, dinners, and rallies) save the annual members’ voting meeting — that could not be cancelled because the state law governing nonprofits required that it be held. [No way to change location, since under NY law you have to give 10 days’ advance notice of that to the members, there were upwards of 4,000,000 members — and Columbine happened 11 days before the scheduled meeting.]

But I consider ‘faith’ different from organized religion, which I personally cannot stand, and think Religulous took more of an issue with.

is somewhat interesting, however. I mean, he had over 3000 comments here. But it was only relatively recently that he stepped over the line into gross provocation. Why would he do that? Usually, after 3000 comments, a person feels invested enough in the community that they aren’t going to try to get banned.
He was mimicking Josey’s speech patterns and positions, maybe he thought since Josey doesn’t get banned he wouldn’t either.

He was always an asshole, it just didn't start sticking out until he'd been here awhile
His claims of having Miles-like sources inside the Hicks administration where always wierd, and the hate Davis was there from the very start. His thing against CD just didn’t stick out as irrational until later because of how aggrivated everybody was with CD in the first half. He’d flip out whenever anyone criticized Ron Washington, but early on he only went after me because I’m one of the biggest Ron-bashers on here, and I’m also kind of a sucker for arguing with impossible people.
After I figured out how to put the trollblocker in Opera and put an end to my own personal frustration he started going after other people, and finally ruined his reputation with the rest of the community one night in one big postgame meltdown not long afterward. From there it was all downhill.

I sure wish could have somebody dog it to the tune of a .423 wOBA and a 4.5 WAR again.
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

I kind of disagree
I think (hope) Hanks second half this year is really an aberration. I think if you look at his whole body of work you have to figure he won’t be this bad the rest of his career. I also think bored games brings the room down more than Padzilla

Board Game never put his teammates in the predicaments Padilla did.
And even in a down year, Board Game would still lead our team in OBP.

The fascination is he has a .389 OBP and a 15.3 BB% despite the fact that he's in a down year
He transformed our lineup when he was in it last year. I do think there’s better options out there that could do the same thing for us (like Bobby Abreu has with the Angels) but I certainly wouldn’t object to seeing Bradley return if we could afford him.

I just don't think it
would be worth the risk of “poisoning” all the young kids that will be here next year. not to mention I also think there are better options, I think Nick Johnson would be a similar option with a much better disposition. I would rather have
-Branyan
-Johnson
-Delgado
-P. Polanco
-Figgins
-Ankiel
-Abreu
-Dye
-Matsui
-Thome
These are a few with a variety of different talents, that are free agents after this year, and that I would MUCH rather see here than bored game and most can probably be had for less than him

ok
first off last year, he wasnt even fully healthy. He came back from ACL surgery in September and was read y to play by April and still put up those numbers. Plus, for everyone’s bitching about RW – which is justified at sometimes- his strength is as a player’s manager. He was the one guy who Milton has actually listened to throughout his career and if the Cubs eat up most of that salary, like they have been rumored willing to do, I see no idea at why you don’t go ahead and replace Hank F., Jones and whoever else is playing the majority of time at DH with him.

Ugh...
I really could have used a Rangers game today with a win.
I really hate Miami.

Anybody know exactly what channels tomorrow?
DMN Rangers Blog says 1st game is FSSW, 2nd game is My27. TexasRangers.com says the reverse (1st My27, 2nd FSSW). The team site is probably more authoritative, but I would think the reports would have heard it from the producers at the stadium. Either way, I set a 8.5 hour recording starting at 4PM on both 27-1 and FSSW on my TiVo, just to make sure.

Ah...
As I was reading I was thinking “Why does it matter? Just flip back and forth until you find it.” Man, I really need DVR.
