Wednesday a.m. Rangers things
And Texas just keeps hanging on in the playoff race...
Jeff Wilson says rookies came up big yesterday, with Julio Borbon's two home run game being one of the big surprises.
Evan Grant notes that Marlon Byrd set a team record for most hits in one day, with 7 over the course of the doubleheader.
Wilson says the defense has been a strength of the team this year.
Elvis Andrus has a new hairstyle.
And Kevin Sherrington says that the Rangers' failure to make the playoffs is the Curse of Juan Gonzalez, since they haven't done anything since trading Juan after the 1999 season.

the Curse of Juan?
how about 37 years of no playoff series wins and only 1 playoff victory. we aren’t the Red Sox, so let’s not try to act like them and invent stupid curses.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Agreed.
The better story line is the education and reinventing of Tom Hicks that brought the franchise from its high point to a low point in less than 3 years but now has it poised for five years of dominance.

Of course it's not a curse, how crazy is that, we all know, and science will back

maybe ts the curse of Tom Hicks?!?!

LOL
Considering that Nellie Cruz is the baseball grandson of Gonzalez
Juan begat Coco who begat Nellie (actually, I guess Coco also led to Lee who led to Borbon! – a great grandkid) It’ll be fitting that Cruz is the most Gonzalez like player on the team and is going to lead us into the promised land.

more on Elvis' offense
I don’t know where you can sort split statistics since the ASB, but over the last month, Elvis has been the 4th most offensive production from SS. He’s behind only HanRam, Jeter, and Tulowitzski.

well Kevin
is a man of science. I wouldn’t expect simpletons like us to understand.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
It keeps improving, so I'll keep pointing it out
Elvis Andrus since the ASB: .303 / .370 / .465; .834 OPS.
Also, why have an article about his haircut, without including a picture of the haircut?

I only followed the link to see the picture. Then, I had to read the article, which made me unhappy.

batting 2nd
Is Ron planning to bat Elvis 2nd next year?
“He can hit the ball to the right side, he can bunt, he can hit-and-run, and he can steal bags,” manager Ron Washington said. “I’ve got him there sooner than I want him there without Michael, but he’s showing that it doesn’t matter where you put him in the lineup.”
I would prefer Andrus and Borbon share leading off depending on the pitcher. But is Ron planning to with Borbon, Andrus, MY, Hamilton at the top of the order next year?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
Would you be opposed to that lineup?
I like it personally. HOWEVER, the odds that MY has this type of yr again is slim and i could definitely see Washington keeping him there for far too long if he does struggle. Guess the lineup would shape up like this:
Borbon
Andrus
MY
Hamilton
Kinsler
Cruz
Davis
DH (smoak, FA, or Murphy i guess)

Yep, the odds are slim..
Just about as slim as this year, according to many in here. Quite frankly, I think his skills aren’t close to diminishing yet, and his approach seems solid.

Ed Coffin has many times compared Young to Molitor
If that is the case, we can expect solid production for quite a while.

So, do you move Young to DH next year or the year after?
Davis to 3B? Smoak to 1B?
If the infield configuration is CD at 3B and Smoak at 1B, probably have to wait until 2011 to move Young to DH, which means the Rangers will need to find a DH during the offseason, if they don’t resign Byrd (in which case Hamilton or Murphy could DH).

Why move MY to DH when
he is a better fielder than Davis?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
I simply do not know how Davis' and MY's defense compare.
I guessed MY’s defense would be in decline, and it turns out there are no 3B FA to target after 2009 or 2010. So, I went with the only internal option the Rangers have.

I'd hate to lose Davis' picking skills at first
By the scouting accounts, Davis is a better major league first baseman right now than Smoak. Break Smoak in at DH, maybe let him play first a couple of days a week while Davis DHs. Roll with that for 2010 and then figure out what you’re going to do fielding wise in 2011.

--Finnerty.Fan on Aug 13, 2009 5:13 PM PDT
I like that idea a lot
break Smoak in at DH. Let him have a few games at first to get his feet wet. Also, keep working on CD at third. I love CD’s picking skills but his UZR over at first right now is slightly below 0.0. Does Smoak have more range?

Molitor got better as he got older
But then, Molitor wasn’t all that great offensively in his 20s, largely because of injuries.

well Young is having the best season of his career so far
at age 32, so…

Something to do with a goat I think? Or a cat?
Who the hell knows. One thing I DON’T like about baseball (out of almost millions of things I do like) is how superstitious everyone is. But I guess it’s to be expected when every play simultaneously hinges on the skills of the players involved and random chance.
Me too!
I’m definitely buying some. What a perfect way to spend my paid vacation time this year…

yeah, it's silly
Having two young catchers on your roster (both of whom started the season with more value than they have now, thanks to you and Ron Washington) just accelerates the service clock and impedes development. I’d go with Teagarden (if no other reason than defense), but apparently you disagree: you’re playing an awful lot of Pudge recently.
Umm… yeah. JD and Washington aren’t trying to make the playoffs or anything with playing Pudge.
Go Rice Owls!
JD should really hire this guy to be the GM and manager.
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power? Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck now. -- Tenacious D
Yeah, I'm disappointed in that.
The team is 2 games back in the wild card and he’s grousing about Pudge over an ineffective bat like Teagarden? And the catcher situation might have been handled differently, but I’d say it’s the uninspired hitting that is the chief cause of their values being lower. Neither Salty nor Tea has given the team a reason to say, ok this is definitely the guy.
And what is with half of an open letter to Daniels/Hart being about a player(s) not even on the team? Even if they signed Mark Prior he wouldn’t factor in even a tiny way until next season. A post with potential frustratingly unmet, much like Saltalamacchia’s bat.

This just in...
Seriously though, Byrd has been good at the plate (even though he refuses to take a walk) and in the field. However, Marlon Byrd is not a gold glove CFer and he certainly isn’t as good as Andrus is defensively. Wash’s love for Byrd is just insane.
I’m starting to think Wash will quit if JD doesn’t bring Byrd back next season.

I’d imagine it boils down to how many apps and mp3s you want to carry on it… I’m close to getting one, too.

The 8 gig is 50.

depends
it totally depends on the amount of music you need. The apps for the most part aren’t huge (but they will probably get bigger as they become more advanced). I have the 16 gig but I only use about 10 GB — but then I don’t have my entire music library on here mainly b/c I’m lazy.

Sounds like it would be nice if they offered a 12-gig model for another $25 instead of having to spend $50 for 16 gigs when you need just a little more than 8
It would be nicer...
if they just embraced standards JUST A LITTLE and included room for a memory card upgrade.
