79-60
79 wins, with 23 to go.
Only twice in the aughts have the Rangers won more than 79 games in a season -- in 2004, when they won 89, and in 2006, with 80.
A great offensive day, particularly if you ignore those pesky middle 7 innings.
Going with C.J. with a 5 run lead in the 8th inning, for his third appearance in 24 hours, was pushing things, I think. But it tells you how much faith Ron Washington has in the rest of the Wolfpack.
Go M's. Go O's.

I'm glad we were able to light up a crappy relief pitcher in the ninth inning.
I was afraid we’d not score again. That would have sucked. Another “operation shutdown” from the offense.
So being shut down for the middle seven innings sucked, but not as bad as getting shut down for the last eight would have.
This is the kind of series we should have seen in Baltimore.
You know what, Rangers?
I’m ok with a 10-game winning streak. Let’s do that.

Remaining Schedule
3 vs SEA (2-1)
3 vs OAK (2-1)
3 vs LAA (2-1)
4 @ OAK (2-2)
3 vs TAM (2-1)
4 @ LAA (2-2)
3 @ SEA (2-1)
11 road divisional games left, 12 home games
1) Is 14-9 and 93 wins feasible with the remaining schedule
2) Will 93 wins be enough to make it to the promised land

Great win
and as Norm referenced this morning ….both LAAA & Bosox must be thinking to themselves “Who ARE those guys?” (reference from Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid).
They righted a shitty road trip, started knocking the tar out of the baseball and are once again playing very good baseball right before the most important home stretch of the year. All very important.

I’d like to sit down and do a serious comparison of the two just for grins. I personally like REK’s style and singing voice better, but that’s just personal taste. Townes is awesome.

I’m a fan, no doubt. Feelin’ good again is one of my all time favorite songs. He and Steve Ealre are probably 1a and 1b for me if I had to make a list.
I just grew up on Townes and Guy Clark and JJW and a bunch of other old farts, so I’m a little more inclined to them.

Big fan of all those guys
Steve Earle has written a lot of great stuff, I just wish he remained more of a storyteller and didn’t go off the deep end into all the protest songs.
Guy Clark is an awesome songwriter, but I don’t like him as a singer as much, for whatever reason, though I am a big fan of him singing Texas Cookin’ and Texas 1947.
Jerry Jeff is one of my favorites and a true pioneer in the genre. He deserves as much credit as Willie and Waylon for opening up the Texas music scene and Great Gonzos is a phenomenal greatest hits album.

No. 2 Live Dinner > Live at the Ryman
Live Dinner is a phenomenal, legendary album. It’s got the classic renditions of Gringo, Five Pound Bass, Merry Christmas, Sonora’s Death Row, and The Road, and then phenomenal interludes with story telling. The Road Intro is good, the Mariano Intro is outstanding, and Mariano the song is absolutely chilling.

God mlb.tv ramped up the advertising even more
Im looking for a highlight on it… so im fastforwarding a few mintues to get past the first out or two of an inning and if I when I hit play I happen to be in a commercial spot it instantly launches a commercial that must be a full minute in length with no way to skip it. i must have gotten stuck in this thing 4 times already having watched a total of a minute or two. may as well have just sat through the entire inning to find one play.
at first it had no commercials, then it would occasionally show one, but now its full on every chance it gets.
the preceding post was a great success.

No way am I signing up next year.

i have a big beef is with the gay ass
mlb blackout restrictions. i purchase mlb.tv and I can’t watch Ranger games unless i’m at a TV. it’s great if i’m out of TX, but this the blackouts are abso-fucking-lutely ridiculous
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
if you want to shell out
a little extra cash, ($10/month), you can use a private proxy service that let’s your IP address show up in another part of the country and stream otherwise blacked out games live on MLB.tv.
thanks for the tip
i should have looked this up earlier in the season.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I hate how they advertise during games to the home fans to get mlb.tv so you can watch your favorite team when you're on the road
mlb.tv first checks your IP, and if you pass that test, you can still be blacked out if your billing address is in a blacked-out region.
Really?
That goes against their advertising pitch which is that you can use MLB.tv to follow your home team when you are away from home.

no way Feldman gets pushed back a day.

Hunter and McCarthy have both been really good as well of late
So unless you pitch Hunter on 3 days rest then someone gets pushed back a day. Doing it this way puts a stronger threesome against Anaheim and Feldman would still pitch against them.

Holland
It is a tough call as to whether Holland should pitch vs LAA. He had that gen vs them in Anahiem. I definitely go with BMac and Scooter but Hunter or Holland is a toss up.

The Rangers have a .648 winning rate against AL West so far. If that holds,
that gives them a 13-7 record in the AL West portion of their remaining schedule. That’s 92 wins without considering the wins they might pick up in the Rays series.
I like the Rangers’ odds quite a bit more than any of the projection systems. Does anyone know the current Vegas odds on the Rangers winning the division or making the playoffs?
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power? Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck now. -- Tenacious D

Of those 13 W's...
You’d think probably about 5 of those need to come against the Angels in order for them to win the division…
Using 13-7 as the target, 5-2 against the Angels would leave them 8-5 against Seattle and Oakland the rest of the way… I’d certainly hope they’re better than that against those two…
I like all the above analysis
The schedule sets up nicely for us the rest of the way out. We can do this.

That red sox/angels
series sure is nice this weekend. Hopefully, the Rangers can sweep this weekend so they will pick up at least a game a day on one team
08/03/2009 A day that will live in infamy for the rest of the AL West.
I think the Rays are going to roll over
for Boston this weekend. However, the Whitesox cna give the Angels some trouble in LAofA.

Definitely comfortable with where we stand right now...
Nothing but AL West games remain aside from 3 with a Tampa team that you’ve gotta think is close to mailing it in if they haven’t already…
Meanwhile the Angels catch Danks and Buehrle against the White Sox plus 7 games against Boston and New York…
Take care of our own business and we’re in very good shape coming down the stretch…
That would be an amazing win for you

Feldman
such a stud.
if we can improve his command just a scoth, he can get even better. seems like sometime he gets in pitch count trouble trying to strike out guys with the curve in the dirt or high fastball instead of just getting them to make weak contact with the sinker or cutter.
In Feldman's 26 starts this year
the Rangers are 20-6. In Tommy Hunter’s starts, 9-5. Everyone else, 60-59.
by comparison
the Royals are 13-15 when Zack Greinke starts. How much does it suck having to play for them?

yep, but i think he's always been a second half performer
i know last year in AA he had a serious boost in his offensive production in the second half
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'
it's hard to call him a second half performer since he hasn't repeated a level
i think it shows that he makes adjustments being new to each level and applies those to more successful at-bats as the year goes on.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
this is what I think as well

"Feldman and Feliz and and pray for…infectious disease?"--TheJeezus on Sep 9, 2009 1:01 PM PDT
I dredged up a thread a while ago where I talked about what we would do with Young when (IF) Elvis was ever as awesome as we hoped.
This was before last season. I pointed out, and most agreed, that it was a long way off, though.
Heh.
Wow
Feldman now has a 3.10 ERA as a starter, which would put him 4th in the league. His overall ERA is 9th in the league, he leads the AL in wins, he is 11th in WHIP, 7th in opponents OPS.
Since the August 1, he is 7-0 with a 2.29 ERA and 7.23 K/9. I know there has been some discussion about how we should consider trading Feldman at the end of the year. I got to say, I think that would be ludicrous. His curve and change have improved substantially over the season. His K/9 rate has improved significantly. His cutter is one of the single most dominant pitches in baseball, according to Fan Graphs. He has already shown that his ceiling is much higher than this organization realized.
I cannot imagine anyone would give fair value for Feldman this off-season; he has developed into one of the best pitchers in the AL and if he can continue to improve his curve and change, he has the chance to be even better.
I'd trade him
for Pujols, but aside from that, I don’t know.
It clearly hinges on whether or not we'd get fair return
if someone offers a boat-ton, accept it. I don’t see it happening, but I also don’t see his value getting much higher.
I’m in favor of staying put, nonetheless
Yeah, fair value would be astronomical and no GM but Dayton Moore would give it up

In fairness to Scooter, though, I’d hate to ship him off to work for Trey “Dusty Baker Jr.” Hillman after what he’s done for this organization.

Not sure if anyone mentioned the possibility...
but would you have considered not sending Feldman out there after we jumped to a 5-0 lead before he took the mound? Not sure how confident I would have been in having the bullpen pitch the whole game, but it would have been nice to save Feldman for Friday’s game and give everyone else in the rotation an extra days rest. I’ll take the W though.

I'd still consider
doing it for Hunter this weekend. Then skipping a Holland start.
Feldman is money on the road and Friday is a home game
Not that he’s bad at home but he’s better on the road. Plus, as we saw, the offense went into shutdown mode for the next seven innings. No telling if the bullpen would have held the five-run lead for all nine innings.
Scooter was all warmed up
Warming up a starter’s kind of a big deal. There’s some work involved so it’s not as if he wouldn’t have done anything and been fresh as a daisy at the end of the day.
