Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

79-60

79 wins, with 23 to go.

Only twice in the aughts have the Rangers won more than 79 games in a season -- in 2004, when they won 89, and in 2006, with 80.

A great offensive day, particularly if you ignore those pesky middle 7 innings.

Going with C.J. with a 5 run lead in the 8th inning, for his third appearance in 24 hours, was pushing things, I think.  But it tells you how much faith Ron Washington has in the rest of the Wolfpack.

Go M's.  Go O's.

I'm glad we were able to light up a crappy relief pitcher in the ninth inning.

I was afraid we’d not score again. That would have sucked. Another “operation shutdown” from the offense.

So being shut down for the middle seven innings sucked, but not as bad as getting shut down for the last eight would have.

This is the kind of series we should have seen in Baltimore.

Big fan of all those guys

Steve Earle has written a lot of great stuff, I just wish he remained more of a storyteller and didn’t go off the deep end into all the protest songs.

Guy Clark is an awesome songwriter, but I don’t like him as a singer as much, for whatever reason, though I am a big fan of him singing Texas Cookin’ and Texas 1947.

Jerry Jeff is one of my favorites and a true pioneer in the genre. He deserves as much credit as Willie and Waylon for opening up the Texas music scene and Great Gonzos is a phenomenal greatest hits album.

Live Dinner is a phenomenal, legendary album. It’s got the classic renditions of Gringo, Five Pound Bass, Merry Christmas, Sonora’s Death Row, and The Road, and then phenomenal interludes with story telling. The Road Intro is good, the Mariano Intro is outstanding, and Mariano the song is absolutely chilling.

God mlb.tv ramped up the advertising even more

Im looking for a highlight on it… so im fastforwarding a few mintues to get past the first out or two of an inning and if I when I hit play I happen to be in a commercial spot it instantly launches a commercial that must be a full minute in length with no way to skip it. i must have gotten stuck in this thing 4 times already having watched a total of a minute or two. may as well have just sat through the entire inning to find one play.

at first it had no commercials, then it would occasionally show one, but now its full on every chance it gets.

I hate how they advertise during games to the home fans to get mlb.tv so you can watch your favorite team when you're on the road

mlb.tv first checks your IP, and if you pass that test, you can still be blacked out if your billing address is in a blacked-out region.

What do the masses feel comfortable with over this stretch? 5-1 would be ideal…

Hunter and McCarthy have both been really good as well of late

So unless you pitch Hunter on 3 days rest then someone gets pushed back a day. Doing it this way puts a stronger threesome against Anaheim and Feldman would still pitch against them.

I guess you could flip flop BMac and Feldman both times on my schedule and it would work. Depends on matchups as to if I would do it or not

The Rangers have a .648 winning rate against AL West so far. If that holds,

that gives them a 13-7 record in the AL West portion of their remaining schedule. That’s 92 wins without considering the wins they might pick up in the Rays series.

I like the Rangers’ odds quite a bit more than any of the projection systems. Does anyone know the current Vegas odds on the Rangers winning the division or making the playoffs?

Of those 13 W's...

You’d think probably about 5 of those need to come against the Angels in order for them to win the division…

Using 13-7 as the target, 5-2 against the Angels would leave them 8-5 against Seattle and Oakland the rest of the way… I’d certainly hope they’re better than that against those two…

Wow

Feldman now has a 3.10 ERA as a starter, which would put him 4th in the league. His overall ERA is 9th in the league, he leads the AL in wins, he is 11th in WHIP, 7th in opponents OPS.

Since the August 1, he is 7-0 with a 2.29 ERA and 7.23 K/9. I know there has been some discussion about how we should consider trading Feldman at the end of the year. I got to say, I think that would be ludicrous. His curve and change have improved substantially over the season. His K/9 rate has improved significantly. His cutter is one of the single most dominant pitches in baseball, according to Fan Graphs. He has already shown that his ceiling is much higher than this organization realized.

I cannot imagine anyone would give fair value for Feldman this off-season; he has developed into one of the best pitchers in the AL and if he can continue to improve his curve and change, he has the chance to be even better.

winning series

If LAA did the same except vs Texas, they end up with 96 wins.

BOS the same except vs LAA they get 96 wins

LAA wins each series except TEX and BOS = 95 wins

Just winning series will not be enough.

Does anyone else accidently let a giggle out

when you contemplate the fact that the Rangers could have home-field throughout the playoffs?

If by 'giggle' you mean

accidentally wetting my pants, then yes…yes I do.

Not sure if anyone mentioned the possibility...

but would you have considered not sending Feldman out there after we jumped to a 5-0 lead before he took the mound? Not sure how confident I would have been in having the bullpen pitch the whole game, but it would have been nice to save Feldman for Friday’s game and give everyone else in the rotation an extra days rest. I’ll take the W though.

my better is better than your better.

I thought about

having him only going 5, then sending him back out on 3 days rest.

I like that idea, but that's a bit too edgy for the Gutfather

doing it for Hunter this weekend. Then skipping a Holland start.

by MikeEl on Sep 9, 2009 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Feldman is money on the road and Friday is a home game

Not that he’s bad at home but he’s better on the road. Plus, as we saw, the offense went into shutdown mode for the next seven innings. No telling if the bullpen would have held the five-run lead for all nine innings.

Scooter was all warmed up

Warming up a starter’s kind of a big deal. There’s some work involved so it’s not as if he wouldn’t have done anything and been fresh as a daisy at the end of the day.

Talk about a fatal flaw in the projection systems

BP needs to figure out how to account for defensive upgrades in the PECOTA system. That’s killing them.

D is somewhat predictable from year to year with the same players at the same positions

Problem is the Rangers were making big changes; i.e. putting a guy at 3rd that hadn’t played there and a SS that’s never seen the majors.

Yeah, it was certainly a dramatic shift but didn't they vastly underestimate Tampa last year for the same reason?

I think they underestimated them

But they were by far the friendliest towards the Rays chances last year as well

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

No.

PECOTA had the Rays winning 90 at final update. I would not call that a vast underestimate.

Over

I put a small amount on the Rangers over 74 wins but really kicking myself for not going larger. The oddsmakers will over compensate the other way next season. I’ve made plenty betting on the Rangers this year as well (in th eright spots obviously).

Did anyone see Tony Blair on Letterman last night?

Blair said that a guy came up to him during one of his press conferences and asked him what he was going to name his soon to be born son. Blair told him.

A month later Blair sees the same guy at another conference with a really nice tan. He asks him, “You live in Ireland sir, how did you get a tan like that?” The man replied: “I owe it all to the 3 week vacation I was able to take thanks to a London sportsbook”

The guy put 10000 pounds on the name of Blair’s kid. Nice.

Give me team chemistry and emotion over stats any day. Do you think 34,000 Ranger fans were screaming their asses off over Pudge and his .275 OBP?

Here's a random question for everyone

What team do you think will sign Hank Blalock next year? You know someone’s gonna do it, who will it be? My guess is he’s off to KC to be next year’s Mike Jacobs…

Mets

Neither Delgado nor Daniel Murphy are solutions at 1B, and who knows when Delgado won’t be on the DL. Hank would surely prefer West Coast, but the 1B/DH slot just isn’t there.
