Monday morning Rangers things

After the flurry of activity this weekend, largely a quiet morning out there today.

Richard Durrett has a Q&A up with Tommy Hunter.

T.R. Sullivan has some thoughts and questions up this morning.

And that's about it.

This is the team we're going to war

with next year and I think the status quo is still in place.

Vlad is a very unique hitter but he’s not patient or disciplined. Maybe he finds it this year but the combo platter of a 35 year old seeing his health break down, his slugging %/ OBP sliding in consecutive years along with never being a disciplined hitter is a very lethal combo.

The OBP problem still exists and any hopes for improvement (The Black Hole sits there like a boil on the ass of This Thing) are going to need to be internal.

Make no mistake, JD was allowed to be a real GM this off-season and these were all his moves.

As long as Chris Davis is the starting 1b on opening day, you will deem the offseason to be a failure. Is that correct?

by cstorm15 on Jan 11, 2010 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

The War is over and your side lost, cstorm. The healing began when last season ended.

I’m rooting for Chris Davis and hoping that 2009 was just a lost year.

Ranger fans should not be fooled by what they saw from the second version of Davis last year because that player wasn’t very good either.

There doesn’t seem to be any kind of contingency plan in place if Davis shits the bed fantastic once again and he was one of our biggest problems in 2009.

I think that we do

need to add a bench guy who can play some 1B. It has been suggested that Greene can play some 1B but I’d like to not have to call up Smoak if Davis gets hurt/sucks.

seems like a really good guy from the outside looking in.

He’s very personable with fans and he was great at spring training.

No, I think he had a HORRIBLE year.

But I just think it would be awesome if you met him in person….and told him that the adjustments that he made after he was sent down to AAA did nothing. Then he told you that he performed better when he came back up, and you told him he was wrong…then he HIT YOU RIGHT IN THE MOUTH. I just think that would awesome. As long as you just cowered down and didn’t say anything about it because I don’t really want him to get in trouble.

by Drew062682 on Jan 11, 2010 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

The "adjustments"

made by Davis consisted of him swinging early in counts so he wouldn’t get two strikes on him.

He got, what 7-8 infield hits and very few walks.

Davis, after the call-up was better but he still wasn’t very good.

Simple question

Do you think this team is an improvement over last year’s squad?

Simple answer.

No.

Any improvement is going to need be internal requiring some players to do things they didn’t do last year.

by Drew062682 on Jan 11, 2010 10:16 AM CST up reply actions

The biggest problem on the team

last year was it’s offense.

The biggest problem with the offense was the ghastly .320 OBP. If you’re going to make the playoffs, you need to plan on having an OBP of around .340 or you need to have a very special pitching staff. There have been teams who have made the playoffs (and actually won the World Series, see 2005 White Sox) with a spare OBP but generally, a .340ish OBP is the minimum standard.

The biggest individual problem with the offense and the OBP was the production we received from 1B in 2009. Our 1B OPS in 2009 was .684 and the AL average at 1B was .830.

What’s the contingency plan if Chris Davis shits the bed fantastic next season?

"Make no mistake, JD was allowed to be a real GM this off-season and these were all his moves."

Fair enough. So everything that was done this off-season gets attributed to JD correct? Lets say Vlad posts a .900 OPS this yr, the credit HAS to be given to JD right? Lets say Vlad gets injured and falls on his face then JD has to get the blame right?

No need for any discussion, a simple yes or no will suffice.

Even if this theory

had some legitimacy to it, how in the hell does this suddenly go back to being JD’s team after Nolan graciously reached down from heaven and put it on the right path?

If Nolan see’s JD as a dunce, why in the hell would he hand him back the keys as you suggest? Surely the baseball genius that is Nolan Ryan would never be so careless after rescuing This Thing.

So, if your latest theory is correct (that Nolan is giving an incompetent JD control again), than Nolan is just as foolish as you claim Daniels to be.

That is the type of question that would be foolish to answer.

Easy non-conference

schedule should spell 4 wins.

Texas, Oklahoma, Okie State have been hit hard by graduation.

We get Texas at home on a Saturday night and I wasn’t impressed with Gilbert Grape.

The toughest road games are at A&M and Oklahoma.

We bring back all our skill players other than Britton (who wasn’t very good last year) and this recruiting class is one of their best ever.

The defense will be improved and Sheffield was really good (against the toughest opponents in the most adverse conditions).

I’m passionate but very realistic with Tech.

He clearly freaked out at the beginning and forgot all his mechanics. He was visibly throwing off his back foot and airmailing. I thought, however, that he turned it around completely and began stepping into his throws in the 2nd quarter and putting some accurate zip on his passes. Shipley was his only help. Granted, he could have read the blitz a little bit better, but who the hell expects the star senior to get whacked on the 2nd series?

And…

Then you must also say…

3. If 2010 is a very succesful year with a division title and a playoff trip, JD gets the credit full on, and thus did a good job… Thus, he is worth a damn….

Im not saying that I agree or not with you, I am saying that if you make an argument, you need to be willing to stand up like a man and stand behind it… I dont care if you hate JD, if you think 2010 is his baby, and 2010 is a big success, then you must say, right now, that you will give him that credit as he, according to you, would be due… Also, if he fails, you can say it was all his fault. Thats how this argument you make works.

How?

A GM’s season (like anyone else’s in the front office and coaching staff) is judged on wins. That’s it. well, wins and expectation. The expectation however, has already been set. In this case its pretty simple:

1) Division title or wild card, World Series win: Best possible.
2) Division title or wild card, Win Pennant: Monkey off back, excellent season.
3) Division title or wildcard: Great, outstanding season.
4) Contention: good season (at least maintained from last year)
5) anything else: bad season.

I hate to be crass, but this is a team that NEEDs to be in contention this year. one year deals to Vlad and Harden mean that this has to work out because they might not be back. Of course, the young core needs to continue to develop and there is huge upward pressure on the pitching side, but with a new owner, and the general atmosphere in the metroplex, (including the Cowboy playoff win), the Rangers need to make a statement.

You are the genius

I posted to start that getting field goals in those situations will come back to get you beat. Your got your short horn panties in a wad and said you would take the 6 points. When I said the 14 points were better, you said 6 was better than 0. Your point was so obvious that a 2nd grader could have made it. Now look back at the game. Instead of 6-0, it is 14-0. Bama has to throw the ball now, which they did with little success. Instead, they run rough shod over the UT defense just pouding away at the run game. Next think you know, its 24-6. It could have been 24-14 at that point if the game goes exactly to form after the first 2 drives. Now when Gilbert settles in and UT starts finding their groove, it is 24-21 and than 28-24 Texas. You get that stop late and you have the ball up 4 instead of down 3. Even than, the Gilbert fumble leading to a TD makes it 31-28 and you still have the ball down 3 late instead of 10. So, my original point of that entire conversation was getting 6 instead of 14 would come back to get you beat, and not only am I correct, I was prophetic…

The only reason they don't

is threat of a lawsuit. 18 years olds can hang in the NBA as long as they can be protected from the overly physical parts of the game. The NFL is still so physical that almost everyone outside of Mo Clarrett understands they can jump into the league as an 18 year old and do anything worth a crap. Plus, in the NBA you still have guaranteed contracts. If an 18 year old goes into the NBA, no matter how bad he sucks, you get paid for 3 years. NFL guys have no guarantee in their contracts. It’s too risky for an 18 or 19 year old to jump into the NFL, get cut right away and now you have nowhere to play…

The

right to work lawsuit. You can’t legally tell a kid he can’t play in the NBA because of his age. As long as they are of working age, it’s a fine line to walk. Clarett tried to sue the NFL for their 21 year old rule when he wanted to come out as a 20 year old sophomore.

It didn’t have to do with age, it had to do with the time elapsed—in other words, it was antitrust rather than discrimination.

by brettgardner on Jan 11, 2010 10:47 AM CST up reply actions

Well

There is an age limit that football guys won’t challenge legally because they understand the huge risk to their careers of doing so. The NBA had to pull teeth to get the 19 year old eligibility rule in place. It does have to do with age. That is why Brandon Jennings played in Italy for a year until he turned 19. He said if I can’t play in the NBA until I’m 19, I might as well get paid somewhere when I’m 18…

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Jan 11, 2010 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

As I understand it

I seem to remember that de-frenching the whole deal, but I’m talking out my corn-port here.

by Keynes on Jan 11, 2010 11:07 AM CST up reply actions

No

It has to do with experience. It has nothing at all to do with age from the player’s standpoint. Clarrett did not sue because of age discrimination; he sued because he claimed the eligibility rules were an unreasonable restraint on competition. He lost on appeal.

The NBA could easily make the same 3 year rule in the next CBA (or amend the current one) if it chose to.

Some guy in a forum posted it, but it seems to make sense.

Carolina and Duke jumped in late because of Walls relationship with advisor Brian Clifton. It seems that Wall is finally starting to make his own decisions. Neither K or Roy will deal with a players advisor, they deal with the players, parents, and H.S. Coach. I know that Roy didn’t recruit him at the start because Clifton and Roy have had problems in the past. Clifton got in the way of Roy’s recruitment of Eric Wallace and Roy told him that he doesn’t deal with people like him, and he would only discuss Eric’s recruitment with Eric and his parents. And Clifton was quoted saying,“I would not support him if his decision was to go to UNC”.

I don't know

I haven’t seen him perform in the playoffs, but I just think winning a title is a very hard thing to do.

Both

If you give any great player a great supporting cast he can win a title and if you give him nothing then it doesn’t matter….having said that, he’s got talent around him, but I don’t think ti will matter. He’s not enough of a complete player to lead his team to that level.

by Drew062682 on Jan 11, 2010 11:22 AM CST up reply actions

Meh

Most people consider Kobe a great defender, but in reality he’s just a solid one-on-one guy most of the game who plays good team defense, but when a guy’s hot, he can lock-down like crazy. As a result, his O doesn’t suffer much.

by brettgardner on Jan 11, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

Different builds

I think Durant’s game will definitely suffer if he tries to become a lock down defender.

Defense

is not something that comes around late. We have been waiting for Dirk to become a great defender for years now. At much as he has worked on it, he is still below average.

Durant is that type of athlete.

Not lateral quickness or the off the ground quickness. He’s much closer to Dirk than he is Marion in that regard.

Answer me this

Are you a big UT fan? B/c it sounds to me like my opinion is a little more objective than yours. The guy has been in the league for what, 3 years now and hasn’t taken his team to the playoffs yet. Now don’t get me wrong, he doesn’t have a ton of talent to work with, but neither did LeBron his first couple of years.

If that's true, fair enough

But he also had a GODAWFUL supporting cast. But then again he was in the East….and the West has been a beast. Time will tell, but I just don’t see him turning into a championship caliber player.

yes, i am a UT fan.

But what has that to do with anything?

I’m a fan of a lot of other bullshit, too.

Anyone who dominates like he does at age 21 has a great chance to significantly improve their game. Kevin Durant has incredible make-up: I recommend that you read up on how he grew up and what he used to sacrifice in order to practice basketball competitively and properly, without resorting to street ball.

starting to gain steam around here as a PR guy. I think if he has one more solid season he will start to become an almost John Daly type figure with the Rangers. I really liked Humphries but as the writer states, there was really a log jam there and he never saw the court. I do like what Najera brings to the team. He is just one of those hustle, intensity guys who you like watching play. Doesnt seem to really make the team much better but it might give them a little boost.

He seems to be a guy who likes to be noticed as the scrapper and someone who, if you ask him, just does his job.

Hey Eddie, go guard so and so… And he goes out there and busts his chops.
Hey Eddie, we need to hit the boards… 5 Offensive rebounds later he’s back on the bench.
Hey Eddie, take out their shooting forward, he’s killing us… Boom, down he goes.

He does get injured alot though. Not sure if his foot is 100%

The ratio of

Go here for a Seattle perspective of the division. They basically have it as essentially a 3 way toss-up right now.

http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2010/1/9/1241651/the-al-west-updated#comments

I, of course, think that they have overrated some Seattle players and underrated some Rangers, but I’d say that of course. None the less, it captures the feel of this division pretty well. Anaheim’s roster is low ceiling, low risk; Seattle’s is top heavy with a lot of filler; and ours is high risk with potentially very high reward.

Good stuff there

Makes me think it’s about time for us start in on some projections. Offseason’s probably done except for maybe a backup catcher. I’ll go first – 89 wins.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

Per the Millwood/Harden thing....that's a we'll see.

The problem with This Thing last year was the offense, more specifically the OBP.

This off-season we needed to acquire a patient and disciplined hitter that could command the strike zone. Ideally this hitter would relatively inexpensive and could also play some 1B to give us a fall back in case Davis shat the bed once more.

The major problem of this team last year hasn’t been fixed.

True,

it’s gonna take little increments from everyone. No more free swinging Byrd w/ 500 PAs. Even though AJones actually drew a fair amount of walks, his hitting was so atrocious to counterbalance that.(300 more PAs)

Kinsler and Hamilton have room for improvement. We’ll see what Hurdle can get thru to these guys.

Just b/c someone would be a good fit(NJohnson), doesn’t mean there isn’t 29 other teams vying for people’s services. Gotta work with what you got sometimes.

Our DH’s hit .242/.312/.491 with an OPS of .802 in 660 PA’s

one third of those Plate appearances (actually 229) were by Andruw Jones, who hit .216/.332/.479 15HR, 31 RBI

one third of those Plate appearances (actually 211) were by Hank Blalock, who hit .226/.280/.523 13 HR, 29 RBI

The rest of them were split between Cruz, Davis, Murphy, Pudge, Borbon, Hamilton, Salty!, and MY and hit .282,.318,.471with 10 HR and 37 RBI

This makes some sense. actually very few reserves, mostly position players as DH’s.

The point is that Vlad doesn’t need to replace 660 PA’s of 38/97 .242/.312/.491 All he has to replace is the 440 PA’s of 28/60 .221/.307/.501 that was Andruw Hank Jones-Blalock.

That’s not out of the possibility for him. Hopefully he’ll post numbers closer to his career average of .321/.386/.568 or even last years .295/.334/.460, The second one is debatedly better than Andruw Blalock at DH was. but at least its as good.

by iblum on Jan 12, 2010 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

Offensive improvement

breaking down by position, we had:

Pos OPS
C .665 (expect improvement)
1B .684 (expect incredible improvement)
2B .802 (could be better but is pretty good anyway)
3B .869 (expect a fall off, .800 is more likely)
SS .701 (expect some improvment, As long as Elvis’ new ability to purchase alcohol doesn’t mean he starts drinking during games)
LF .806 (expect a bit of improvement. probably see more Cruz there next year)
CF .771 (might see improvement, depends on Borbon, shape will change though, as the .323 OBP goes up and the .448 SLG goes down and the 14 steals goes to about 40)
RF .803 (expect a bounceback for Hamilton playing right field all year, so an improvement here too)
DH .802 (not sure what to expect. I’m guessing we’ll get about the same overall this year, Vlad will be ok, get hurt, we’ll bring up Smoak, who will struggle a bit, be called a bust, and Josey will clamor for them to trade for Blalock at the deadline).
PH .372 (expect some improvement here, this is pretty excreble, and since many of those at bats are high leverage, ouch!) Once again here, the main culprates are gone, with Jones, Blalock, German, Vizquel, and Byrd, getting 24 of 48 PA’s and going .043/.083/.086 (1 hit, 1 double, 1 walk and 6 k’s) our returning guys (Borbon, Davis, Murphy, Hamilton, Boggs, Tea, Cruz, and Andrus) hit .211/.375/.211 Which is bad, but not pitcher bad.

Idiot.

We did not need to acquire a patient and disciplined hitter (I assume you were talking about somone like Thome or Nick Johnson).

What we needed was for ALL of our players to improve on commanding the strike zone.

Setting the bar at 200 PA’s, the following players appeared for the rangers in both 2008 and 2009:

Name, BB% 2008, BB% 2009, difference
Chris Davis, 6.3, 5.7, -0.6
Ian Kinsler, 7.7, 9.2, 1.5
Michael Young, 7.8, 7.9, 0.1
Josh Hamilton, 9.1, 6.6, -2.5
David Murphy, 6.8, 9.9, 3.1
Marlon Byrd, 10.0, 5.3, -4.7
Salty, 13.5, 7.1, -6.4

Well, Byrd’s fell off the map, but he’s gone anyway, Kinsler and Murphy’s walk rates improved, Young’s stayed the same, and Hamilton and Davis and especially Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s rates declined (salty’s the worst. and with Salty, his K rate stayed the same. Even for those which did improve, they need to improve again. The league average walk rate is 8.7%, 3 Rangers who will be here next year were above that (Murphy, Kinsler, and Cruz.)

your final sentence is the one which is the real problem. Because that major problem of the 2009 team HAS been fixed. it was fixed by the replacement of Rudy J with Clint Hurdle. Especially when you want to help young guys like Elvis Andrus, Julio Borbon, Chris Davis, and Salty and Tea become more selective, better hitters.

You z'd through this thread too fast.

We already talked about that. As well as posted some sweet posts from other who think Hicks Jr. should “die in a fire” I believe is what was said.

Also there was something about deficating on his burnt corpse.

In all fairness

I believe the part about deficating on his burnt corpse was in reference to Sr not Jr.

Or maybe "defecating"?

You know, if we’re going around correcting people’s spelling.

Damn, you've been waiting 4 days for that eh?

Touche’

Being a horrible speller, I usually ignore them. I’m more the grammar police. The improper usage of “your” and “you’re” astound me to no end. As do their, there, and they’re. Those are the easier ones to decipher.

yep.

"Every Indian feels that where the ball is, there he should be, and though they do not altogether abandon an instinctive disposition, the glory of Lacrosse to them is in the exciting chases after the ball. The Indian village game was not intellectual enough for the whites, and needed systematizing; but never let this improvement be carried to such extreme as to spoil its extemporaneous peculiarities of fielding, and the general free character, which distinguishes it above all other field games."
