Doesn't this have to be a pretty strong signal

that a deal is close, or are they just chewing into their preset 2010 budget?

by Brett Perryman on Jan 18, 2010 4:01 PM CST reply actions

That's what I was thinking

Actually, I was already thinking that after they signed Lewis. Signing Vlad, Lewis, and this kid in such a short span of time makes me think they’re pretty confident a deal is going through soon.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Jan 18, 2010 4:06 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe

But how is this signing any different than Vlad or Lewis? Both of those were done during the exclusive negotiating period. Compared to the reported purchase price of the team, this only changes things by 2 thousandths of a percentage point. The scounting of this kid was a sunk cost and as long as the $1.3MM is pretty much market value, I’m sure Greenberg or MLB said “what the hell.”

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

by WyoRanger on Jan 18, 2010 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

No way MLB would say that

1.3 for an international guy who isn’t a big impact reputation would not slide by.

But as far as it being different from the other two, no, I don’t think it’s that different, aside from the fact that it’s a step further. Those moves impact the immediate future of the club in a pretty serious way, while this is more of a luxury. But it’s the same sort of general thing, spending money where Hicks might not have had the cash to do it if he were making the call, and MLB might not be willing to do if they were.

Love it....

I hope we are even more agressive in signing foreign players once the new ownership is in place. It is a way of sustaining your talent on the farm once your big club starts drafting so high that it is hard to grab those bluechip prospects.

If gives you a chance to be a winner while also refilling your bucket full of talent.

I'm very curious as to the logistics of L.A. scouting/signing

How do bidding wars occur?

How does a team claim a prospect?

Do all 30 teams become aware of a prospect through his agent or only the ones who’ve watched him pitch?

Anyone have a good link explaining this process?

But the kid’s manager/coach is often one of the biggest drivers of these deals. There was a big stink about those guys taking money under the table to get a kid to sign. Think a Nats LA guy was implicated in that type of thing.

is it weighted at all between

projectability vs. ceiling?

In other words, does a can’t-miss prospect or a could-be-great-but-nobody-can-tell guy get rated higher?

by kevinkinsler on Jan 18, 2010 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

Well, two things

First, when he asks where would he be ranked, I’m thinking more externally than internally. And externally, just about everyone is a little hesitant to go hog wild over guys who haven’t played yet. You see an elite player in the international market like Vinicio being ranked in the teens or twenties in the Sox system (and no, it’s not appreciablly if any deeper than Texas in the 20s and 30s). Cuthbert is another elite guy in the class, and he’s in the teens in a not very deep KC system. Given that Texas is a deep system, with this guy likely figuring a bit lower than those guys (Vinicio was a two million bonus), I’d think it would follow that we’d be talking late 20’s to 30’s. We are to 25 in the community rankings, and Sardinas isn’t getting major support, and he has to figure ahead of this guy as well.

Second, I have no idea how the Rangers would view a rankings situation, and I doubt that they engage in that formally. But if we’re actually judging based on value to the organization, yes, I would think that this kid is probably higher than the thirties, even though it has not invested the time that it has in its more veteran prospects, and he’s so far away.

by Brett Perryman on Jan 18, 2010 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

I'm guessing we paid a premium for the position, eh?

Or is this guy on the same level prospectily (yeah, made up a word) as Profar and the other more expensive LA prospects?

by Aqua on Jan 18, 2010 5:50 PM CST reply actions

This is interesting...

A Reds prospects blogger has put together a ranking of all 30 teams prospect values based on John Sickels grades.

Of course it only counts the players Sickels evaluated, so it’s not a complete picture, of every farm systems, but it’s an interesting comparison of what you could probably call each teams top tier of prospects.

Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.

by LSJ on Jan 18, 2010 7:52 PM CST reply actions

Flawed

Lower rated prospects must be over-valued in Wang’s dollar amounts

               >

Legit major league potential with hit tool and raw power to go along with a plus arm. People are very high on this kid. Greats signing. I love it. I can’t wait to see how he develops with professional instruction.

by jparks77 on Jan 18, 2010 8:45 PM CST reply actions

We shall see

I love 16 year-olds with power potential and defensive chops. I guess we will see if his hit tool develops with proper instruction. So many young kids flash plus tools in the cages only to struggle in live action. I haven’t seen Alfaro in person, so I can’t really agree or disagree with the available assessments. I’ve been calling around to get a better scouting report and so far the consensus seems to be that he has legit power potential, a great arm, feel for the position, and a swing that shows promise, but is quite raw. In other words, his price tag is the first line of the scouting report.

Some concern

Mexico City is a dangerous place, but I love it. I’ll be bouncing around the country, spending most of my time in Mexico City, Xalapa, and Puebla. The drug violence is a legit concern, but I’m not a high-value target, so unless I get caught in the middle of something unfortunate, I should be fine.

The dangerous aspects of Mexico intrigue me. When I first moved to NYC, I lived above a deli in beautiful Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. It was a total war-zone. I loved it. Now I live in Williamsburg with a bunch of hipster kids with skinny jeans and Vampire Weekend t-shirts. The city is too safe. I need another war-zone in order to thrive.

First Payano and now Alfaro. I love this. We just keep adding talent. I’m a bit surprised at the dollar amount, but I’ll take it.

Alfaro was pretty much the second ranked catcher in this year’s class behind Sanchez (NYY for like 3+ Million), right?

And assuming DePaula’s is still radioactive cause of document fraud and Wag Mateo’s old man eyes are as bad as rumored, might Alfaro have been the best remaining signable j2 guy out there?

I think there is some sort of caveat

on just about anyone still out there, but I’d probably consider Carlixte in that class as well, until his signing with KC is confirmed. And Mateo is obviously a unique case, but I have to suspect that he would be the top talent available still, in reality.

But yeah, it’s pretty nice to see them just pick off top rated guys in the down season.
