CJ Wilson Signs for $3.1 Million
The Rangers have agreed to terms with pitcher C.J. Wilson on a one-year deal. That knocks out another potential arbitration hearing. Still left are Josh Hamilton, Frank Francisco, Scott Feldman and Chris Ray.
Wilson agreed to a salary of $3.1 million.
Wilson was 5-6 with a 2.81 ERA and 14 saves for the Rangers in 2009.

flipping the ball to the manager after totally blowing a game, complaining how he wants to be closer but isn’t getting a shot, hiding an injury from the team just cause he wants to play (apparently), he thinks he’s better than the fans just cause he’s a baseball player (strongly implied by him), can’t get properly motivated for games without outside sources involved, like Ozzie Guillen… showing he doesn’t really care for the team and winning, but still wants an active role. yada yada..

You're basing your character judgment on:
a) flipped the ball once to his manager— this is clearly an emotional reaction to a poor on-field performance… I’m hardly going to judge a player for that
b) his statement that baseball players are generally d-bags. I can’t judge him for this bc I played ball up to and including college and %-wise, baseball players (and athletes in general) are douche-bags
c) you think he can’t pitch in pressure situations EVER, but if you’ll take a moment to realize how narrow-minded you are being and look at his game log last year, you’ll see that he pitched in several high-stress situations and dominated the game for us.

If Michael Young...
had flipped the ball to the manager, it’d be called “gritty” and showing “leadership.”
You honestly have a problem with CJ vocalizing that he wants to have an important role with the team?
When has he said he thinks he’s better than the fans? Dude throws a Guitar Hero show for charity and fans a couple of times a year and talks to any fan that wants to know anything from him online. That’s a horseshit accusation.
When has he ever shown that he “doesn’t care for the team and winning”?
You can’t just makes up shit and pretend it is real to make it easier for you to believe it.
P.S. Flipping the ball to the manager was showing that he cared about winning, if you asked me. He was upset that he hadn’t done a good job. Should he have done it? No. Does it make him this mythical douche that you guys seem to think he is because he doesn’t just shut up and play ball? No, it doesn’t.

He also seemed to get himself in a ton of trouble by allowing the first batter to reach alot and walking to many batters.

If the front office doesn’t want CJ starting, he isn’t going to start. He hasn’t started in years and was arguably the team’s best reliever last year. Not starting last year didn’t make him put himself above the team.

of CJ as a douche. It’s mildly infuriating to me.
So he has a personality. So what? Do you want him to Michael Young it up and be the most vanilla person on the planet just because he is paid a lot of money to play baseball?
If he blogs and uses Twitter to allow a level of access to him by fans, which he doesn’t have to do, as evidence by 99% of the other players in the league, what’s the problem? That should be a good thing.
Though honestly, I don’t even think it’s a fan attention thing. If anything, he’s just like you or I, he happens to like to use the Internet to talk about about of crap.

Agreed
It pisses me off. Because people get upset at players like C.J. (who express their legitimate opinion), interviews and player statements have become pointless, insincere statements by the player’s agent through the player’s mouth
I don't know quite what it is
But he’s just not very easy for most people to like. I started off as a big fan of his blog and everything, but it grew old rather fast, especially when he flew his true colors in the douchebag-gate incedent.
Whether it’s intentional or not he’s just got this “look at me bro, I’m cool!” air about him, and it’s damned annoying, especially on days when he’s not pitching well enough to make you ignore it.

by kevinkinsler on Jan 18, 2010 10:16 PM CST up reply actions
I agree....He used to be our Nuke LaLoush
but he has improved each of the last couple of years and admittedly has great stuff…..I’m not really all that upset about the ‘starter’ stuff, seems he has more ‘pitches’ than the usual reliever and that (more options) gets him in trouble. He very well might be a better than average starter…. a lefty who throws 95-96 with movement on a lot of pitch options…..The Rangers have damn sure started out working with less!
Flew his true colors?
Do you even disagree with what he said? Because if you say you do, practically every post you make on here would make your disagreement hypocritical.
by ghostofErikThompson on Jan 18, 2010 10:10 PM CST up reply actions
I don't disagree with the idea that baseball players are idiots
But you can’t throw your teammates under the bus like that for one thing, and for another, he can’t exclude himself from that group. Which, I think, is part of what makes his persona so annoying. He basically said he regards himself as a smarter/better person than his teammates, which is an incredibly douchy and stupid thing to say.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
If baseball players...
didn’t have their gigantic egos, that we feed into, mind you, maybe they could realize that having interests outside of baseball isn’t a bad thing.

I just don’t like the way he tries to distance himself from his peers by acting like he’s the super-enlightened Luke Skywalker of ballplayers. Yes he is a good pitcher. But would you feel good with him in the 8th inning of game 7 in the ALCS. I woudn’t! He put up some nice numbers but he melts under real pressure.
I’ll say it again he has better stuff than his numbers say (which I realize are good).

I'd take him in the 8th inning of a game 7.
The 17th best FIP and xFIP among all RP’s in baseball in 2009, coupled with a 10.26 K/9 and the 17th best HR/9 is dominant any way you slice it. He’s one of the top two pitchers in our bullpen.
You can not like him as a person (I don’t particularly, as I’ve stated in this thread) but trying use that deny that he’s one of the best relievers on this team, and was among the better RP’s in baseball last year is fucking ignorant.

Because Fx2 "won" the "closer" role at the end of 2008.
But “closer” is an outmoded idea in the first place. Whether or not a guy is officially a “closer” shouldn’t have anything to do with evaluating how good he is.

And as far CJ not being "clutch" goes
His LOB%‘s around 75 3 out of the last 4 seasons, the exception being 2008 when he was hurt, which I think you can safely call an outlier. The average LOB% is around 70-1, so he’s been above-average at stranding runners most of the last few years.
He also held batters to a 643 OPS with RISP last year, and 623 with men on. In 2007 those numbers where 731 and 461. 2006 and 2008 weren’t as shiny, but one was an outlier season and the other was before things really clicked for him in ’07.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
Well, not intangibles like "good face" "gritty performance" or "veteranness", no.
I think talent and ability to produce runs is what wins you baseball games. Good instincts, good batting eye, stuff like that, that gets filed under talent, IMO.
But “intangibles” as they’re presented in the media, not really.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.

Talent
Talent
Overrated.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
I disagree, but fair enough
And would you consider these “mental talents”?
Leadership can be overrated. But, in baseball I think it’s important.
For instance, if your team is down by 6 runs, it is easy to not hustle every play, dive for ground balls, etc. However, a good leader on the team can inspire others to focus and try harder. Just my opinion.
There are tons of talented-as-hell athletes who can either be drive to greatness by leadership or fall to the way-side
Talent to me includes the ability, fortitude and focus to use it
If you can’t figure out how to use your tools, or you need someone on your ass constantly to get you to play up to your highest level, well, you’re just not that good.
Leadership and presence have a certain importance and a role, true, but they shouldn’t be valued to the point where they outweigh actual ability to produce on the field. That’s why you have coaches there, to lead and inspire the players. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice a lineup spot just so you can get your team rah-rah’ed up.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
Fair enough
I guess I just consider “mental talents” as intangible ones, bc you can’t put a number on them

Prospect Insider's Jason Churchhill on Felix's extention...
http://prospectinsider.com/view/felix,-m%27s-ace/
Now, after the initial feelings of jealousy and rage, I noticed this:
The money given to Hernandez in now (sic) way affects what’s available for Zduriencik to offer Lee. Having said that, I think there is very little chance Lee stay in Seattle, and I all but guarantee he doesn’t sign an extension prior to free agency.
[I actually have a feeling Lee ends up signing with the Texas Rangers next winter, but we’ll talk about that when the time comes.]
I wonder what his reasoning on this possibility is?
by ghostofErikThompson on Jan 19, 2010 7:00 AM CST reply actions
More likely than Newberg's Josh Beckett dreams.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
I'd much rather have Beckett
and if Lee has a great season, I imagine they’ll get comparable contracts (- a few years)
Yeah, I'd rather have Beckett too
He’s younger and he’s had a better career than Lee. Right now he looks like he’s gonna be the top dog on the FA pitching market, which likely puts him outta our price range even with new ownership and a division title under our belt.
Of course, if C-Lee puts up batshit crazy #’s in the cavernous Safeco this year, that could change.
Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.
Ever since Lee burned me a few years in fantasy
I’ve been weary bc he has been inconsistent over the course of his career
That being said, it does kind of look like he figured something out in 2008
I'm guessing the reasoning has a lot to do with us being an up and coming team without a lot of long term big money contracts and (probably) a new owner in town looking to make a splash of some sort.
