Tuesday a.m. Rangers stuff

Reports are that Seattle has signed Felix Hernandez to a multi-year deal.  How many years and for how much is still unknown, though, it appears.

Jeff Wilson has a story this morning touching on the C.J. Wilson signing, the Rangers scouting Ben Sheets, and an addition to the team's Far East scouting team.

T.R. Sullivan says that Wilson will come into camp as the Rangers' setup man, but will have a chance to make the rotation.

Richard Durrett has an ownership update, although it appears to be the status quo.

Giving Bud more power with this one...

but, frankly, if it means less blown calls, I’m for it..

2009 season was ugly… 2009 postseason was unacceptable.

Felix looks like

5+1 for 78, not sure if 78 includes option year or not.

Agreed

Basically, he will be getting paid LESS than Lackey?!

Well

Lackey was a free agent.

Felix was probably looking at $8 and $12 million the next two years, or thereabouts, via arbitration.

So if it is 5 years, $80 million — which is what Buster Olney says it will be — then that is $20 million per year to buy out his three free agent years.

Good pt

Still seems like an excellent deal for the Mariners

better than me might be able to tell us more clearly what the tweet says…

but either way, it’s an incredible deal for the M’s.

@FranciscoBlavia @d_a_cameron Buy the beers & play the music because is a 5 years deal around 78 millions $. No option for a six season.

From the CJ thread, Churchill on Felix's extention
The money given to Hernandez in now (sic) way affects what’s available for Zduriencik to offer Lee. Having said that, I think there is very little chance Lee stay in Seattle, and I all but guarantee he doesn’t sign an extension prior to free agency.

[I actually have a feeling Lee ends up signing with the Texas Rangers next winter, but we’ll talk about that when the time comes.]

What do you think he will want?

Im thinking something at least similar to what Lackey got. So 5 yrs at around 80-85 mil? I wouldnt want him at that price (assuming he would come here).

Probably and I agree

he’ll be 32 next year. I don’t want to spend that much on his 32-37 years.

I'd travel forward in time and quasi-voluntarily spooge all over my own grave if we could get Cliff Lee for 5/80 next off season.

But we, um, won’t.

Assuming he continues to be the kind of pitcher he’s been since his reinvention (which is to say a ~7 k/9, ~1.5 bb/9 ~3 FIP innings eating horse-monster), there’s no way he signs for that little.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go forward in time and spooge on your own grave. You’ll wind up fathering a race of zombies or something equally horrific.

It’ll be like that time when rats made sex to birds in someone’s birdbath, and created a whole new type of AIDS. Just don’t do it.

Well they have Greenberg money now

And chances are that the new ownership group will want to make some kind of splash next offseason.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Lee supposedly wants... …$23 million per year.

He might get $ 20 per year on a 3 year deal, but he ain’t going to get it on a 5 year deal, much less $23 per year. But a good way to get a 5 year deal at $17-18 per is to launch a demand for $23.

That Mets deal looks worse and worse

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

OT - Effn Inlaws...

I’ve been woke up every morning by at least 5am…this morn it was 345 am. Right now my father in law is walking around with his shirt off holding a blow torch…..

I had to go with him to Home Depot this morning to get a “plum bob”

Only good thing about their visit is they pay for everything and give me free labor….and he likes to hit the bars around 6pm which is nice.

Is your father-in-law a sitcom character?

Sounds like it.

Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.

Evan has an update too
The bet: A very perturbed Bud Selig warned both sides to negotiate in earnest with each other and to not say anything to anybody until the deal was done. The general feeling is Selig and baseball want this finished and feel there is a deal to be made. They want the sides to concentrate on getting the deal done and nothing else. And as part of that bet, you can rest assured Selig probably threatened Tom Hicks that MLB would do whatever it could to seize control of the club if Hicks Sports Group tried to wriggle out of the sale process to go with a suddenly more attractive deal from Houston’s Jim Crane.
