Hey

Did you respond to Thomas about the dinner tickets? I’m wondering if anyone got that email – he copied me and I got it, but he says NO ONE has responded about whether they want their tickets mailed so they can attend the autograph session (we won’t be) or whether they want to get their tickets from us at the dinner.

The Tom Hicks era

wasn’t very successful, but I’m not sure that getting rid of him is the silver bullet.

I’m not sure the franchise he is leaving top to bottom isn’t in some ways better than the franchise he bought. The franchise he bought had lots of stars from a previous regime, but it had a GM who didn’t know much about drafting or developing talent, and was absolutely useless at identifying pitching. Had we stayed on the trajectory we were on pre-Hicks, I doubt we would have been any better off.

Hicks gets a C+/B- as an owner from me. He had the money to draft the Teixeiras and other players, and I think he finally got us a GM that has a chance to be successful. Even with a wealthier owner, I don’t see DFW competing with pure FA talent, because I dont see the Rangers having a $150-$200 payroll, so finally getting a GM who can do something with a farm after 15-20 years of crap from our farms is worth something.

I entireely agree with Cahill

and if anything thing the grade is actually a tad low.

Hicks hasn’t been a great owner. We all know why. But the organization, from top to bottom, is richer and deeper than it ever has been in its almost 50 year history. It seems nonsensical to me for everyone to be relishing in the optimism of this farm system, young talent, and promising major league club, yet demonize the owner as if he is among the worst in not only baseball but all professional sports. That is, simply put, idiotic.

Hicks is squarely in the middle of the pack of major league owners. He had a few terrible moves; namely the ARod debacle and his Liverpool leveraging. And his “grade” gets knocked for those. But on balance, he’s been far better than anyone gives him credit for. And when you take a refurbished, stronger organization from top to bottom and throw out the owner at the last minute, you are taking a risk.

I am hopeful for Greenberg, but I will miss Tom Hicks.

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Jan 24, 2010 11:22 AM CST up reply actions

I certainly don't mean that everything that went wrong the last decade is Hicks' fault.

But if the organization is in a better place right now than it has been I’d almost have to say it’s by accident on Hicks’ part. Kudos to him for recognizing the talent he had in Daniels and for buying into the rebuilding from within plan a couple years ago. But, honestly, at that point he didn’t have much choice. They had tried everything else and failed.

So, I guess I might agree if you’re saying, nice job by Hicks in finally getting around to semi-competence after trying everything else first.

by t ball on Jan 24, 2010 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

I'd give him about a C or C-

but Id have to agree with alot of DJ’s reasoning… However, he did pretty much single-handedly set this orginization into a nose dive this decade with several bad moves. And I’d also say we could be a lot worse off owner wise, but the whole money squeeze is making this deal so much sweeter… if we had to continue to deal with his broke wallet we would be very much handicapped even with him allowing JD to continue with his plan. And this deal comes at a critical juncture as we are going to need to start spending near the upper half of the rest of baseball over the next few years to supplement this team as it makes playoff runs.

Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.

by blalock84 on Jan 24, 2010 2:39 PM CST up reply actions

Personally, I always thought

what set this club up for a nosedive in the ‘00s was Doug Melvin’s absolutely shitty drafting and development, especially of pitchers. Melvin got a lot of credit for what he did with Grieve’s kids (Pudge, Juan, Rusty, etc.), but really he was the one who extended the rot on the farm, and had an unbelievable dry spell with pitching.

I know Hicks gets killed by some in the local media because he fired the popular Melvin, but Its a stretch to believe this franchise would be in good shape if they let Melvin rebuild. Its not like the Milwaukee Farm System is any great shakes after 7 years there. Letting Melvin run the show would have been a recipe for indefinite mediocrity.

by DJCahill on Jan 24, 2010 7:19 PM CST up reply actions

Agree completely

I don’t like Hicks, but that has nothing to do with him getting rid of Melvin. Melvin also inherited some nice prospects in Milwaukee. And even Melvin gave credit for the Brewers’ minor leaguers to Seattle’s new GM:

Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin praised Zduriencik’s efforts when he was quoted as saying: “No doubt about it, he deserves almost all the credit for the young players we have. The players he has drafted are making an impact at the big league level.”

by t ball on Jan 25, 2010 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

I'm ambivalent on the topic of Melvin

but while he was a failure in developing pitching, you’re painting with WAY too broad of a brush when you say he didn’t leave anything. Melvin left: Michael Young, Mark Teixeira, Hank Blalock, Travis Hafner, Carlos Pena, along with lessers like Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix, and he had basically a horrible tragedy in Ruben Mateo, who would have fit with that group. That is a hell of a core of guys that Hart & co. inherited, along with ARod. The pitching, yes, disaster. But you should stop there.

From what I understand Greenberg is just a face and a facilitator. The “new ownership group” is going to be just as concerned about making a profit as anyone else. Groups of anonymous limited partners tend be less accountable. I bet Dubya is a partner; he’s now Hicks’ neighbor.

I see nothing changing; which is probably good since Hicks has the team headed in the right direction. Remember he hired JD, Nolan, Sunny. I’m really indifferent.

The real reason I voted yes was of personal greed. I have a close friend who works for Hicks and gets us free tickets sometimes.

In the interest of quicker games Ron should just tell the ump he's pulling the Feliz card and the ump should rule the inning over.--Sherman McCoy on Sept. 4, 2009

I was thinking about it,

I bet Hicks has somewhere near a 1-2% approval rating

Even a dog wipping his ass across the floor would have a higher approval rating than Hicks right now.

So 4% says yes and 95% says no

What the hell happened to the other 1%?

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.
