he throws probably the hardest curveball in the system
it’s been compared to Verlanders. BBTiA does a nice writeup here on Scheppers
Daniel Gutierrez was rated as having the best Royals’ system curveball last year. BBTiA compares him to Carpenter among others.
Martin Perez had the best curveball in the system last year before Schepps and Gutz

Not that it means a damn thing
but Gutz CB is tops in the system in my book, but good to know he gots competition.

Goldstein disagrees
8. Michael Main, RHP
Year in Review: The high-ceiling righty had a nightmarish 2009, as an undiagnosed viral infection sapped him of his strength and turned the year into a lost season.
The Good: While Main was often in the mid-80s during the year with flat secondary stuff, he was healthy in instructional league, and showing again the stuff that the Rangers were so excited about coming into the year: a 91-93 mph fastball, and hammer curve ball that rates as a plus pitch. He’s among the best athletes in the game among pitchers, as he has first-round talent as a power/speed center fielder out of his school.
The Bad: Main’s overall game needs refinement, so the lost year of development hurts him. His changeup remains a below-average pitch. He needs to incorporate more of his body into his delivery, which employs a bit of a rock-and-fire motion.
Ephemera: In four appearances at the very end of the year once he got his strength back, Main whiffed nine over seven scoreless frames.
Perfect World Projection: Mid-rotation starter.
by Brett Perryman on Jan 25, 2010 11:10 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah.
I would put him in the 9-11 range. My point at the time was just that while most signs point to the ‘viral infection’ not being a concern for the future, it is an added risk that needs to be taken into account when trying to project the player.

Given BA's "rules"
for doing the projected lineup (which is basically to assume that anyone who is in the organization will stay in the organization), they really should have Rich Harden in there instead of Feldman or Hunter, but I guess it’s more telling/interesting to have them.
by Brett Perryman on Jan 25, 2010 10:48 AM CST up reply actions
Is that their rule
or a basic guideline they try to follow?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

-The Outlaw
I would use the two
interchangeably. It’s their own rule/guideline, so they can obviously stray from it in certain situations (this one either being an oversight or a good example of that). But it’s the easiest way to avoid the dilemma of trying to predict what FAs would go where.
by Brett Perryman on Jan 25, 2010 1:26 PM CST up reply actions
With Harden though
He was a recent offseason pickup on a 1 year guaranteed deal. I’d think that a player like Harden would be ignored in the future rankings simply because of how unlikely it is for any pitcher on a 1 year deal with a new team to still be there a few years down the road
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
This is the main reason
I would be ok with not signing Sheets. This team seems right in the thick of things for the AL West and a Sheets signing would certainly help (assuming some health) with the division. But I don’t see this team as being better than those beasts over in the AL East. Contending is obviously the main goal, but developing Holland and Feliz to the point that they can comfortably be slotted into the starting rotation next year would be goal 1A for me.
Just think, post All Star break next year, you could be looking at a Feliz-Perez-Holland top 3. That can compete with anybody.

Man
if things went well and you went into a division series with a Boston or NY with Harden, Sheets and Feliz, I think that combination would be the first time in franchise history that you wouldn’t feel overmatched. With the three kids you have a lot of talent, but you’re not going to have that same confidence. It’s a long shot for either group of three to be healthy and pitching their very best in October, but those first three would make me pretty cocky.
by Brett Perryman on Jan 25, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions
Agreed.
That is why I would be excited about a Sheets signing. I just wanted to point out that there is a cost besides whatever a potential contract would cost: less development time at the major-league level for somebody that I’d like to count on next year, be it Holland and/or Feliz.
Incidentally, do you think Feliz is a starter for the Rangers by July or August? And if so, what do you think would be a realist expectation for him for 2-3 months of starts in the majors?

what pitch makes guys like Hamels and Santana so good?
that is the same pitch Kiker is so good at. Sure, he needs to be more efficient with his pitches (saying it nicely), but having a changeup as a plus pitch always bodes well for a pitcher and makes their fastball play that much faster. It’s about control with Kiker. That is all. Granted that is a struggle for many pitchers. Some figure it out while some don’t. I’ll put him in the latter for fun.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Like I say

His age is a good point. It feels like he’s been around for a long time, but as Lucas showed from his research, he was one of the youngest pitchers in the league. 21 is young for AA; it’s on the front edge of standard age for a top prospect at that level.
I agree with t ball’s thought on starting/relieving, though, and I’m going to be ready this season for them to get him ready to contribute in the pen if they appear to need help at some point.

I can't picture them needing that much bullpen help
If they still think Kiker can start, there are guys like Scheppers, Gutierrez, and Perez who you could call up for some bullpen help if that’s the route you want to take.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
I guess my unstated assumption
is that, though he is young, I don’t think that he will have the command to start, so you’re talking about a potential legitimate relief shot in the arm versus nothing. And I don’t think we should overstate how strong the bullpen is. It’s pretty good, but they had serious issues at times last year, even after Feliz came in and saved the 6th-7th inning situation, and they didn’t change the dynamics of the pen by adding Oliver, Ray and Snyder. Oliver will be decent to solid in a middle role, and the other two are big question marks. So guys like Kiker, maybe Moscoso, and maybe Scheppers by the summer or so, could be big factors if they let them. Gutierrez has thrown like 30 innings in his life above Low A, so I don’t think he’ll be as equipped as soon as Kiker. And Perez may be too good and too young for them to want to go that route with him.

I would have Smoak ahead of Kiker but that could come down to circumstances. The most intriguing aspect of this to me is Perez and Scheppers. Either of them could have an immediate impact on a staff once they’re ready, but at the same time, either of them would be absolutely buzzing through the system to play in the majors this year.

Perez? Really?
I didn’t see any of his AA performances, but I have to think, just due to his age, he would need another year to figure out how to order his pitches and maybe even sharpen command of them before he could stand confidently on a ML hill.
Scheppers has two pitches he could might be able to do well with by mid-season, I’m thinking, based on what I’ve read of evaluators who watched his AFL performance.

Perez is right there in future impact players, but it doesn’t seem like he would have that huge of an impact this season if brought up. The best case scenario would be what Feliz gave the team last season, but I think that’s pretty optimistic.

Have you looked at Scheppers' AFL numbers?
He only pitched in seven games, but if we were using the same standard for him as Perez, rather than picturing what scouts said and how good he looked when he was on TV the one time, I don’t know that there is a ton of difference. Scouts RAVED about Perez after he pitched in AA, despite the fact that he struggled a little to get hitters out (less so after the beginning). Same goes for Scheppers.
I point that out as more of a devil’s advocate point, because I don’t see Perez as someone who should be in the majors this summer (or fall) either. I’d like to think that Scheppers can handle it, but I’m not sure that we have much evidence of that, aside from just how good his stuff is. He was never regarded as one of the more advanced college/indy guys in the draft, even by those who regarded him as one of the best. Being a reliever would lower the bar, but still…
by Brett Perryman on Jan 25, 2010 3:38 PM CST up reply actions
I guess I can see it,
thought it would seem to have to mean one of two things had happened. Either they’d have a lot of injuries that would sort of force their hand, or he would just be so lights out that he pushed his way up, or some combo of the two. I’d see Perez as a possibility sometime in 2010 — especially as just a late season cup of coffee get to know the majors kind of thing — but Smoak seems a near certainty to at least get a late season look-see, and Scheppers would seem a distinct possibility for bullpen reinforcements much sooner than Perez.

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that I’m not sure whether Scheppers will get moved that fast or whether he’ll be more on the Perez schedule.

I know there’s some leeway with that if you make him a PTBNL, but even with that it’s tough since he signed so ridiculously late.

What about the 40?
I’ve been reading this waiting to see you post a smackdown about the obvious elephant in the room. Scheppers, Perez and Smoak. It’s getting pretty lean on space. Not much filler left.

The season hasn't even started
so this is a little silly to say, but while the three A and AA clubs are going to be almost completely bereft of quality position prospects, the short season leagues are going to be very interesting again this year, particularly if they don’t stretch Profar to Hickory. All six affiliates should have several good pitching prospects, and you may have a Richard Alvarez make Hickory, but those two should have good ones again, like Victor Payano, David Perez, Jose Monegro, Carlos Melo, Edwin Escobar, Richard Alvarez, Shawn Blackwell, Nick McBride, Paul Strong and Randol Rojas.
But unlike some of the other levels, they may have a cluster of serious position prospects. While the Rangers will likely have four of the first 50 picks, we don’t know how many will be hitters or whether they will sign in time, but there could be one or two premier draft picks added to the three high profile international signees, Jorge Alfaro, Jurickson Profar and Luis Sardinas. And the rest of the draft will be supplemented by the outfielders already in place: Chris Garcia, Esdras Abreu, Hector Martinez, Teodoro Martinez, Ruben Sierra, Braxton Lane and Guillermo Pimentel.
That all has a good chance of adding up to more positional talent on each of those clubs than any of Hickory, Bakersfield and Frisco have. And OKC should start the season with a nice group, but that could change quickly, since Ramirez, Smoak, Arias, Gentry/Boggs and Moreland could each be in play for promotions.
