Joe Inglett designated for assignment
Per Evan Grant, Joe Inglett has been DFA'd to make room on the 40 man roster for Colby Lewis.
Inglett was an obvious candidate, but I expected that Joaquin Arias and Luis Mendoza would be the two guys on the chopping block to make room for Lewis and Khalil Greene, and both guys survived.
I suspect Inglett will clear waivers and be outrighted to AAA.

i have this growing dislike with Arias having a spot on the 40
when will it end already??

I'm confused - what's this have to do with Ben Sheets?
"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.
Then he grounded out weakly to second.

I guess it boils down to the fact that
Inglet is a hell fo a lot more likely to clear waivers than Arias..
No need to get rid of even a minor trade chip if you don’t have to. He might still have some value to a team that looks to have real struggles up the middle like the Astros in ST.

I wouldn't mind them taking him

I actually read somewhere he is doing fairly decent in the Venezuelan League this winter.

Uh...
He doesn’t play in the Venezuelan League. He plays in the Domincan. I just watched him play against Nellie’s team. Cruz’s team won 2-0.
Correct. I had him confused with Elvis, who is in the Venezuelan League.
Thanks for correcting that for me.

It was the 7th game of a best-of-9
They both went hitless, though.
Cruz was sporting a very unbecoming moustache but is the most popular player on his team (Gigantes). There were a lot of fans wearing Cruz jerseys.
I guess he can't technically be missed

Inglett v Mendoza
Much rather have Mendoza in the system.
And they’re willing to gamble losing Inglett on seeing if maaaaybe Arias’s arm comes back.
Arias’s arm is what keeps him hanging around. If there’s a bad pun there, I’m sorry.
Go Strangers.
Yeah
I would keep Mendoza before the other two. Inglett vs Arias may be kind of close, and I think I’d opt for Inglett’s reasonable usefulness myself.

I have no problem...
with the Rangers potentially losing Golson or Inglett.
But I can’t for the life of me figure out why Arias or Mendoza are still on this teams 40 man roster.

40-man roster
24 of the 40 players on the roster are now pitchers.
There aren’t going to be many guys in AAA on the 40-man roster to call up once the season begins if a position player goes down.
But
Who’s going to go down such that they would be short? They brought in another catcher for cover in Hall, and then Ramirez still. Smoak is probably the guy who covers for Davis and Vlad if he’s doing well, and Murphy can move into the order as a regular bat if that’s what they need. They signed Greene for first level defensive cover across the IF, and Arias presumably provides second layer cover if Inglett doesn’t get to OKC. They have 5th and 6th OFs in Boggs and Gentry and then there’s Moreland.
Not to discount the possibility that they could see a series of injuries, but it would take quite a few for them to have problems, because of the nonroster options that they have. And, as always, ST re-sorts things, so the pitching situation will look different than it does now.

Yes, but
All of those guys you mention who aren’t on the 40-man roster would require dropping someone.
Now, it’s likely that Synder, Mendoza and Arias are off the 40-man roster by opening day due to options/Rule 5 considerations, but one of those spots will need to go to the 25th man on the roster.
My basic point is that carrying 24 pitchers on the 40-man roster will likely prove difficult once you get into the regular season.

I tend to agree with you
but as I think we both alluded to, things will change by then as far as numbers issues. Even if you have to have to add all of Hall, Smoak and Moreland by the middle of the season, those are the only three nonroster guys I mentioned. You had three 40 cuts handy already, and the 25 takes care of itself because you’re DLing the injured players. And if you have to keep Arias as well, it wouldn’t be the end of the world to have to designate Mathis, for example.
I think they’re just trying to have as many pitching contingencies in place as possible going into ST, since they can work around things positionally, and since there can be so much attrition in the spring, especially with kids.
by Brett Perryman on Jan 25, 2010 7:05 PM CST up reply actions
I agree with having as many pitching contingencies in place.
Not knowing what USA Lewis will look like and having, Harden, McCarthy, and Fx2 around will require some shuffling if things go south.

Mathis
I wouldn’t want to DFA a guy who put up a 147 ERA+ last seaon and has 2 options remaining.
