I like the Reed Johnson idea better, myself

Baldelli’s knees restrict him bigtime as an OF. Not sure he’s much of an insurance policy.

I wish

The team said Hamilton wll back up CF. Given JD’s statement about how we could have had both Vlad and Lowell, I think we sign a 1b like Garko.

by cstorm15 on Jan 26, 2010 11:22 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I'd just as soon use Matt Brown as the backup 1B/3B at this point

Garko can only really play one position (unless you want to see him clowning it up in the COF), and seems like a rather redundant allocation of resources.

Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.

by LSJ on Jan 26, 2010 11:49 PM CST up reply actions

Matt Brown isn't very good.

You don’t have room for both a backup CF and a backup 1b/3b. If you’re going to bring in a RH to platoon with Davis at 1b (which would substantially improve offense from that position), then you should find a better option than Brown.

Yes, Brown was good against RHP in AAA last year in a limited sample size, but that was with a BABIP over .350. He’s not good enough to rely on for regular at bats in 2010.

by cstorm15 on Jan 27, 2010 12:57 AM CST up reply actions

Brown

Has killed lefties in the minors his entire career. He’s not a guy you want facing RHP’s in the majors, but all he needs to be is a backup 1B/3B who can mash lefties a bit and I think he can do that.

Going out and paying Ryan Garko a few million to be the 25th man would be nice, but it seems rather redundant and unnecessary when you consider our budget and the fact that he’s useless outside of first base.

If you’re convinced Matt Brown isn’t good enough to be your 25th man, Fernando Tatis seems like a better target than Garko because of his versatility, though he isn’t that great of a hitter.

Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.

by LSJ on Jan 27, 2010 1:29 AM CST up reply actions

If we have the funds

I’d much rather hang my hat on a lineup that includes Gomes, Tatis, Garko or Sheffield than count on an unknown like Brown.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

by NothinG on Jan 27, 2010 6:51 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Normally yeah, but this is the freaking 25th man.

Although I suppose you could argue that there’s enough injury/bust potential on this team to make strong reserves a necessity.

Morality you can fake. Fun you either have or you don't.

by LSJ on Jan 27, 2010 8:05 AM CST up reply actions

I doubt Garko costs "a few million"

He is arb-eligible I guess but I don’t know his status (non-tendered or whatever). But he made less than 500k last year and he was only a part-time player.

"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan

by Dirk Diggler on Jan 27, 2010 8:23 AM CST up reply actions

Completely disagree. The 25th man is very important on our roster.

Davis is starting to look like a platoon 1b who can only hit RHP, and the backup 1b is going to get a substantial number of plate appearances against LHP. Something on the order of 150-200 PAs. I’m not sure why anyone would be willing to trust those plate appearances to Matt Brown. Not when there are better options available, and we can still keep Brown at AAA as a contingency plan.

Plus, there is also the possibility that Davis completely fails next year. If Davis is hitting .200 by the end of May and Smoak isn’t ready, what do you do? I certainly wouldn’t want to be starting Matt Brown everyday (even if Murphy gets a few of those AB against RHP).

87 wins gets the division? Color me skeptical.

I guess it is better than the guy on BP who was saying 3 teams in the AL East was going to win over 90 games. Do we really think TB can win 90 games in that division?

Speaking of that, I really believe the AL West could have two 90 game winners. Oakland would seriously have to be a whipping boy, but I think it could happen. And the funny part is, I don’t know if the AL West is where the WC would come from. This is going to be a crazy stressful year.

To me

all the projections are just information that goes into my own blender before I spit out an opinion. I don’t hold one of the projections over another but I do pay particular attention to what Vegas says.

I was a little surprised they have the Rangers falling 10 games from last year but I do think our runs allowed and runs scored are both going to rise in 2010.

The over/unders for MLB teams don't come

out until mid March but Bodog currently has the Rangers at 20/1 to win the World Series.

I don’t know how or if it relates but there are currently 11 teams with better odds to win the World Series (Mariners are at 18-1) than the Rangers. The 12th best record in MLB last year was 86-76 (Atlanta Braves) which seems more in line with this current Ranger mix.

It's going to be a wild year

That much I know. All 4 teams depend on high-risk/high-reward type players (have you seen the Angels roto? Saunders, Kazmir, Pineiro). I think the healthiest team will win the division. Vegas can’t predict health.

Ryan - Daniels
Ryan will oversee the baseball operations with general manager Jon Daniels reporting to him, a chain of command that has been in place for a few months.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/baseball/rangers/stories/012710dnsporangersdeal.b7fd510c.html

Daniels and his staff orchestrated the Rangers offseason plan with Ryan’s approval and confidence. Ryan, entering his third season as club president, continues to signal strong support for Daniels and his work as general manager, and it appears their relationship has grown stronger in the past two years. “I think Jon has done a good job,” Ryan said. “I don’t anticipate me recommending any changes as far as the baseball operations are concerned. The baseball staff has done a good job in the offseason improving the club, and the development side has done a good job.”

And don’t be fooled by anything you read, these are exactly the type of moves that JD made before Nolan became his boss – that OBP is big fat boil on the ass of This Thing.

You hang on Nolan’s every word (which is fine, I am a huge Nolan fan myself), but suddenly when Nolan says something with which you clearly don’t agree, you don’t accept that he’s telling the truth.

It's been 5 years since JD took the reins and John Hart left

a cupboard full of talent in the pipeline knocking on the door that was about to join a talented core of young players in an organization that had a ton of financial flexibility.

AG, Kinsler, Danks, CJ, Feldman, Eddy V were all on their way to The Show in October 2005.

It’s time for JD to put together a team that wins the AL West or step away.

Shocking it’s not so black and white like we hear around here so much.

This off-season, because there were no promises that Nolan was going to be with the organization going forward, JD had his castration reversed and is now being allowed to assess/improve the team’s glaring weaknesses within a budget but without having to get Nolan’s approval.

They missed badly on the Rangers runs allowed (everybody did)

but did a pretty good job in projecting how many runs they’d score (projected 776 / actual 784).

They missed badly on Cleveland but still had Detroit and Minnesota finishing 2nd & 3rd. They did well in projecting the AL East standings order (hit on Boston’s win total) and were correct in projecting a quantum leap forward by Seattle.

It’s just information for the personal blender but it’s definitely not useless.
