Friday a.m. Rangers stuff

T.R. Sullivan has a lengthy piece up, in which he talks to Tom Hicks about his tenure as owner of the Rangers.  Hicks acknowledges some mistakes with free agent signings, and also talks about the problems John Hart had with the media once he came to Texas, among other things.

Randy Galloway has his Tom HIcks column up this morning, and doesn't have anything good to say.

Evan Grant writes about BA having the Ranger farm system checking in at #2 in baseball, behind Tampa Bay.

On Matt Purke

I don’t have any problem with what MLB did. Back in July, they are looking at a team the other 29 teams are having to fund, with an owner who has gotten the team into the financial mess it was in, and who, at that time, hasn’t shown he was overly serious about selling the team. I think it’s pretty reasonable to them to say “we aren’t going to give you more money to sign a guy for a lot more than most team would pay him, given that you are already broke and don’t have a plan to fix your problem”. Forget the whole thing about slotting, from a pure business perspective it didn’t make sense for them allow it.

That said, I’m glad they didn’t let us spend $6 million on a high school pitcher. (And before you say, but it would have been Hicks’ money, no it wouldn’t have been. The team was apparently running on a line of credit, so that $6 million would have just added to the amount the team owed MLB — or prevented the team from paying back — and I suspect become Chuck Greenberg’s problem to deal with).

From Mr. Hicks:

“These are entities that run as a business, and Jerry Jones has always made money with the Cowboys. I didn’t always make money with the Rangers.”

Anything decent that Hicks says is immediately forgotten when he whines about this kind of stuff. He has taken so much criticism for these sorts of comments that you would expect him to keep these thoughts to himself. He just can’t resist…it’s almost sad.

It makes EG’s “he doesn’t deserve scorn” column look pretty silly.

No freakin joke man.

He has got to have more pride than just about anyone around the DFW area. I know is a wealthy, financially, and with thing inherently brings “pride” but dang man, this is just crap. You know Jerry and Cuban have the same pride but they know how to go about it. You dong hear them coming out talking like this. Just shut the hell up and go away already. You were a terrible owner and you screwed this team so many times over!! I so hope we dont see this goof face at opening day this year and Chuck and Nolan better throw out the first pitch!!!

The old question:

If you ask how much something costs, you can’t afford it. If he’s complaining how he lost all this money, you shouldn’t have bought the fucking franchise, you douche!

At any rate, wasn’t it Forbes that said that the Rangers were making in the order of $10 million a year since he slashed payroll under $70 million?

I believe it was a 10 million in "operating income" they made

No telling how much actual profit they made especially considering the financial situation HSG got the Rangers into

Supposedly the team

OK so he made money that year

He probably made money a few years. How much money did he lose during his time as owner? The years when he had the 100+ million dollar payrolls how much money did he “make”?

You think Chuck Greenberg and the group of investors that own the team now aren’t going to care if we are operating in the red or black?

As much as we as fans want our owners to only care about winning it is a business venture for them. Mark Cuban is the exception not the norm. And given that we are now owned by a group of people and not one individual I would imagine the books are going to be a much greater importance than had one real wealthy “fan” bought us

Whats wrong with that statement?

Do you think pro sports owners don’t care about making money? Thats the ultimate goal for probably 99% of owners. Sure winning a title is great and I imagine most want to win but money is the ultimate goal. Whether its in the year to year operations or in the value of the franchise rising for when you sell it off. If you think Chuck Greenberg and the group that bought the Rangers now doesn’t care about making money you are crazy. Its how they go about doing so that will determine how most fans view them.

If Hicks really leveraged the Rangers to buy Liverpool, then Hicks crossed a line.

It’s one thing to ask a team be profitable. It’s another thing to siphon so much money out of the team and leverage any remaining value in the team so that you can pay for other failed business interests.

If you want to find a real reason why Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban are better owners, here’s one: they’ve never let another business venture take priority over the team. Or, more accurately, they’ve never put themselves in a position where they had to make such a decision.

by cstorm15 on Jan 29, 2010 10:04 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

yes, this is the defining the very essense of Hicks

He used the Rangers as collateral to obtain other assets. I hope MLB makes this illegal for anyone ever to do this again. In fact, I think doing this was criminal.

Yeah

Hicks isn’t the only American to use his stateside sports assets to buy an EPL club:

George Gillett- owned the Montreal Canadiens when he bought into Liverpool
Lerner family- owns the Browns & Aston Villa
Glazer family- owns the Buccaneers & Manchester United
Stan Kroenke- owns the Nuggets, Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, and is part owner of the Rams & Arsenal

So Hicks wasn’t doing anything that a number of his counterparts weren’t already doing.

However

I’m not aware of another major sports team that practically went into receivership, and whose owner had to be forced to sell (fighting the whole way), because of this economy.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 29, 2010 7:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What Hicks did isn't the problem. It's when he did it.

If the economy hadn’t capsized on him, it likely wouldn’t have become a problem. Businesses typically leverage their assets and/or refinance their debt, but if you do it and then the economy tanks, things get ugly. So, it’s not so much what Hicks did, but when he did it.

I doubt money is the ultimate goal for 99% of owners

Owning a sports franchise is a horrible way of investing your hundreds of millions unless you have a team like the Yankees, Red Sox, Lakers, Cowboys, and a few others. Not losing money is important, but you usually don’t see owners investing 500 million dollars like other businessmen and making the same kind of return on that investment.

How exactly do you get from...

“Anything decent that Hicks says is immediately forgotten when he whines about this kind of stuff.”

to

“Chuck Greenberg doesn’t care about making money”

Yeah, we get it. Greenberg wants to make money just like Hicks wants to make money. All owners want profitable franchises. One of the ways to do that is to improve the public perception of your franchise. One of the ways to NOT improve the public perception of your franchise is to complain about how fans support other teams in the area more. Cuban, though he complains about scheduling conflicts all the time, and Jerry Jones speak to the press and public in a similar manner to how Greenberg is now and it makes a difference in how their teams are perceived.

This is what I find interesting

TR’s Take:

Whatever success or disappointments the Rangers have had over 12 years, Hicks insists it was not for lack of trying….Hicks is forthright in admitting that he made mistakes as owner. He does not shy away from that.

Galloway’s Take:

Under Tom’s watch, with his business failures outside baseball leaving the team in a leverage hellhole, all that fandom goodwill ended….His 12-year legacy as the owner of the local baseball club is currently the most soiled of any in any sport ever within the confines of North Texas.

I don’t want to make any rash generalizations, but doesn’t it seem like these two writers just picked a side and decided to make an argument? I don’t know… maybe it’s just the state of journalism today, but why does it always have to be slanted with opinion from the writer?

Dave Cameron via Rob Neyer on a possibly new market inefficiency
What will the next big inefficiency be? It’s impossible to predict, of course, but I have a guess – old players.

-snip-

Teams have become cautious with the contracts they give to aging players, not wanting to get burned paying too much to a guy who may end up not having anything left in the tank, but I feel like we’re passing the point of caution and shifting towards a market failure. If a guy is a good player at 35, you should not expect him to be useless at 36. Yes, you regress his projection for aging, but players who go from good-to-terrible in a single season are the exception, not the rule.

Given the contracts that quality older players have been settling for over the last few years, I think we may see teams in the market for value increasingly going for the graybeards.

by tyd3311 on Jan 29, 2010 9:11 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Kind of a , well duh, moment

That article would have been with the curve about the time Abreu was signed last offseason. Right now everyone assumes the older guys are not going to get the kind of contracts they did a couple years ago. The pendulum has swung.

I think that the cycles of market inefficiencies are getting shorter. We may already be at a point where you can’t say that this year the market inefficiency is “x”. Too many teams are more savvy about value, and they will find specific players that may be undervalued for whatever reason as opposed to a “type” of player that is being undervalued. The shopping by most teams this winter seemed smarter to me than years past.

The MLBPA might try to say collusion, but I think teams are just getting smarter on average about value.

Speaking of Moneyball

There is an (unintentionally) funny column in the Boston Herald today, which rips the BoSox for caring more about these newfangled stats like OBP and UZR, rather than RBIs and fielding percentage that dumb teams like the Phillies and Yankees use and get to the World Series by using.

There is, of course, the requisite carping about Moneyball, and refers to Billy Beane as “the godfather of this con job.”

I think Adam, Jamey (when he puts away the pom poms and the subject is not related to anything regarding JD / Tom Hicks) and mjh (when he’s not trying to convince the world this really is a mid-range baseball market) all know their stuff.

Adam will try to muddy up the water or put words in your mouth you never said (typical attorney bullshit) to distract the witness during a discussion and is prone to taking his ball and going home when he’s getting his ass handed to him but all in all, I know I better bring my A Game with him.

Yep

For a while, about every couple of weeks, I’d have a dream where I was a third year and didn’t know what time my final exam was, or it turned out I was a credit or two short and wasn’t going to be allowed to sit for the bar, or something like that.

Every once in a while it would be high school, or college, and I’d have too many absences to graduate or I’d have missed a test or didn’t know when a test was because I never went to class, but usually it is law school.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 29, 2010 9:49 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Mine is one of two varieties:

1) I have not been to the class one single time all semester and I panic that I know nothing,

2) I have forgotten that the test is that day and I’m not at all prepared.

I literally have to wake up and reassure myself that I am no longer in school, I no longer have homework, and I don’t have to ever take a test again.

by FuturePants on Jan 29, 2010 9:55 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

See

My dreams aren’t about being prepared…apparently, I’m so inherently arrogant, even subconsciously I think I can b.s. my way through any test.

My dreams are about not knowing when the exam is (and I missed multiple exams in college, resulting in "F"s in those classes, because I got the exam date wrong) or getting dropped for too many absences.

That's funny...

….mine are always of the “I don’t know what the fuck is going on in this class” variety. I think it’s because I railed against studying so, so much in college and law school. College I could get away with doing no studying….not so much in law school.

My first year of law school...

…I made the decision that I was really, truly going to study, for pretty much the first time in my life.

My undergrad GPA at UT was barely above 2.0 because I put no effort in, and I felt like this was a chance to sort of prove, if only to myself, I could get good grades if I wanted.

So I buckled down, worked my ass off first year, and ended up ranked in the top 10 of my entire entering class.

Then I was like, okay, I proved my point, and put it in cruise control the rest of the way, with my GPA dropping accordingly.

Nice

I CALI’d (highest grade) one class at Tech and it was last spring, my last semester. It was a seminar class and I never once opened the book nor did I try to compete with the obnoxious environmentalist gunners to talk in class. But 70% of the grade was a paper and I decided to CALI it just to prove I could.

The paper was 10,000 words minimum. I cranked out 15,000 on a unique topic that was far more entertaining than the dead horse topics everyone else chose. I know the gunners were pissed when they saw I beat them.

My first year I figured I was just smarter than everyone and didn't do that much

Got horrible grades. Next semester I studied my ass off to the point classmates said I studied more than anyone else. Same grades. To this day I don’t think there’s anonymous grading. A guy that was top ten told me later that in one class he had to get 104% on the final to get an A in the class. He got an A

So I went back to a medium level of effort.

"You promised me, Eckstein, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life, there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, when I have needed you most, have you not been there for me?" David Eckstein replied, "Because my little legs had gotten tired, and you were carrying me." And I looked down and saw that I was still carrying David Eckstein.

Then he grounded out weakly to second.

Agree.

I pissed off the Dean of my Law School by telling him that grading was too subjective and inconsistent. One prof wants to see that you can issue spot and apply the rule of law. Another just wants to see if you can regurgitate the rules of law they taught you during the semester. He took exception to my assessment. But hey, if he didn’t want my opinion, he shouldn’t have asked.

Same here, but with med school

I also had a gap between undergrad and med school, so I had time to grow up a bit. Unfortunately, the class I entered with has ended up being the best class A&M has had possibly ever, so it didn’t ever show up in class rank…which was a bummer.

It did, however, show up on Step1 scores, where our class’s average was 10 points higher (on a 160-280 scale) than previous classes. My score ended up being good, but I have had a few dreams about taking it again…they are not pleasant. I imagine this will happen once I get into the clinics and start getting pimped also.

Oh and to stay on topic, I did really well on my MCAT but even now I’ll still have the occasional nightmare about it. Maybe it was because I literally had no clue what the first three questions were on the test and I was on pins and needles the rest of the exam, but there was something about that test that just really stayed with me.

That sounds similar to my experience on the second day of the bar exam

That day, for non-lawyers/law students, is a six-hour, 200 question multiple-choice exam over general topics like contract, constitutional, property, and tort law. When you first look at a question, none of the four answer choices can be eliminated. This thing is nightmarish and the average person misses about 75 questions.

I got through the first 20 questions and started wondering what I was going to do for a living after I failed this thing. I was confident on none of them.

Things got a little better, but I would say that, out of 200, I was confident in probably 25 of my answers.

And yet, I made a score right about the median.

Here's by multi-state story

I’m cruising along and on question 155. I go to put down my answer and saw I was filling in the bubble for question 156. So I had to go back through every question from #1 on to check and make sure I put in the right answer (I didn’t circle them in the book, just in filled in the bubble on the form). Turns out I had worked on 148, filled in the bubble, changed my mind and filled in the bubble for 149 instead of erasing 148. Took about 15 minutes to do that, ran out of time and randomly filled in the last 10 answers.

My lawyer nightmares

I’m going to trial and notice that I hadn’t taken a deposition or done any discovery and barely understand what the case is even about and have no witnesses lined out. Horrible nightmare.

DON'T DO IT, DON'T DO IT!

Okay, that’s not totally accurate advice, but I felt obligated to say it anyway.

But in all seriousness, think about why it is you want to go to law school. If you think it’s a quick ticket to wealth or you think the added degree will make you more marketable, I’d caution you against it.

There are a variety of "right" reasons, I just wanted to point out some terrible reasons

Some people go to law school because they have dreamed of being a lawyer their whole life, can’t get enough Law & Order, etc. I knew quite a few people in law school who fit that mold, and that’s a good reason, but that wasn’t me.

I went to law school because I had some particular circumstances and opportunity that would make lawyering worthwhile. That and the fact that a legal background jives with some other entrepreneurial interests and ambitions that I have.

Pretty much my reasoning as well.

Whatever you decide, don’t do it because you want to “change the world.” I know a ton of people that came with that in mind and had their souls crushed.

I don't think anyone is trying to discourage you...

But there are just so many bright-eyed incoming law students who think they will definitely be the next Denny Crane and will definitely get that big firm job paying $200k out of the gate, or that every firm operates like the one from the Practice, or that every case is ultra-sexy with incredible drama, or that they will change the world.

There is a reason that law students and lawyers have such ridiculously high alcoholism/depression rates.

Don't forget the philosophy majors spouting off about natural law.

My experience has actually been with the “save the world through environmental law” people, and the “America can’t afford to tell the rest of the world to F off” people with international law aspirations.

I actually know a guy who came in wanting to be an environmental crusader … it lasted until he got his offer from Patton Boggs.

The wrong one is for a paycheck

You have to be interested in the law and what you do or you’ll burn out. People that think it’s easy money and/or they didn’t know what else to do after undergrad don’t make it.

Well

The simplest answer to that question is that you want to go into a profession which requires a law degree.

For most people, that’s being a lawyer.

The question then is, why do you want to be a lawyer?

I did it because I worked in a law office while I was in undergrad, decided it was interesting work I’d be well suited for, and I there wasn’t anything else out there I had a burning desire to do.

I tell anyone interested in going to law school that they should, if they can, try to work while in college for a law firm, so they can get a better idea about what the work is from day to day.

That's very good advice

I did not do it myself, but I spend enough time talking to attorneys who shot me straight that I had a good idea what I was getting into.

As one of them told me (and you learn this working in a law office), lawyering is not just “arguing” like lay people tend to think. It tends to be lots of reading and writing and if you don’t like those things you don’t need to be a lawyer.

Arguing is not a beneficial skill

Public speaking, persuasive writing, researching and some people skills are what’s required.

This is what I look for in a lawyer

Bill: At my cousin Ruthie’s wedding, the groom’s brother was that guy Alakazam. You know who I’m talking about?
Stan: The magician with the ponytail?
Bill: Right. Well, he did his act, and every time he made something disappear, Vinny jumped on him. I mean, he nailed him! It was like, it’s in his pocket, or he’s palming it, you know? Or, there’s a mirror under the table. I mean, he was like, he was like, wait a second, wait a second, it’s joined in the middle, and there’s a spring around it, it pops it open when it’s inside the tube. It was like Alakazam’s worst nightmare. Vinny was just being Vinny. He was just being the quintessential Gambini.

To chase tail?

I went to law school because I graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering and knew I didn’t want to spend the rest of my career in a cube. Plus, engineering wasn’t a good match for my skill set. I was an adequate engineer, but I was an even better writer. Also, to echo meno’s point, I worked in a law office during college as a legal courier.

That said, given the number of unemployed lawyers right now, I’d say you need five things to go to law school: (1) the desire to study 24/7 your first year of law school to make sure you’re in the top 10%; (2) a post-graduation employment plan where you make enough money to offset the expense of law school and the loss of income for those three years; (3) a backup plan incase #2 doesn’t work out; (4) another backup plan, just in case; and (5) an acceptance letter to a Tier 1/2 university.

Before going to law school, I read Planet Law School. It’s a little over the top, but it will put you in the right mindset to do well your first year.

A lot of it depends on where you're trying to land

If you’re trying to land at biglaw/big metropolitan area, yeah you need really good grades.

But it’s not true to say you will be unemployed unless you’ve got really good grades. Specific skill set, interest in a unique practice area, or geographical connections will treat you just fine.

That's where the math comes in

You don’t have to be top 10% to find a job, but you have to ask whether the job you find makes sense economically considering you lose three years of salary to go to law school and you have to pay for tuition and expenses. If you do that calculation and realize that going to law school may be a losing proposition (whether in the short term or in the law school), you then have to decide on a personal level whether you truly have a passion for the law.

Actually, in my limited experience, if you’re putting any legitimate analysis into post-law school life that rises above the level of daydreaming, then you’re probably doing more than a large percentage of law students, and you’ll be just fine. Going to law school is a big decision, and it’s important to have all the information you need.

by cstorm15 on Jan 29, 2010 1:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree totally

Problem is, too many go to law school with their eye on the 160K biglaw job. But there are only a limited number of those jobs to go around and lots and lots of smart, talented people who want them. Seems like a lot of people never consider supply & demand until it’s too late and they didn’t get a single OCI interview.

Then they blame their law school’s career services.

Tale of two people

My friend was top 10 with a great resume as an aid in DC before going to law school, got a big salary in a big firm in a big city. Carried a briefcase for someone else for two years, hated it, decided to transfer to one of their smaller sattelite offices. Still didn’t like it. Now he does compliance for some company.

I was bottom third but did very well in competitions. Got a job for an insurance defense firm. Got a lot of experience in a few years and moved to another, larger firm that paid better and does lots of corporate work but needed someone to do litigation and admin contested case hearings. I’m still actively practicing law and am happy with it while my friend is more on the fringe of the law.

Honestly, the reason i want to do it is that have a law degree would be quite advantageous for what i ultimately plan on doing. Most ppl who do what i want to have a background in accounting and law (usually a CPA and a lawyer).

Kept up with it with my phone but wasn’t about to try and leave comments given where I was and my time constraints.

Glad the deal with Greenbergs group has gone through. Much like Hicks did when he first bought the team, hopefully this group will inject some much needed money and energy into the organization and fanbase. Hopefully however this front office won’t make the same mistakes the other front office made by giving out horrendous contracts to bad players.

Overall I give Hicks as an owner a C-. He gets good marks from me for the last few years signing off on a plan to rebuild this franchise from the bottom up and investing in the draft and our minor leagues to the point now where we have a top 3 farm system the last couple of years and if you had to guess right now even with some graduations we will be a top 5 next year as well. That is the ultimate recipe for success is to have such a stocked pipeline to give you the financial flexibility to sign others. Obviously he had his faults but I agree with Evans piece from a couple days ago that he shouldn’t be scolded so much. Do people have the right to be pissed with him…yeah no question. But if you can’t see some of the positive things he did then you have blinders on. We could have had a much worse owner these past 10+ years than Tom Hicks.

Which Rangers are slated for FanFest tomorrow?

I heard CJ won’t be there because he was notified too late (for the 2nd year in a row). And I think I heard Lewin will be there. But other than that, I’m struggling to find a semi-official list.

A friend is taking her son out there and she asked me if I had heard who was going to be there. I got nothin’.

It's interesting you say that, because people were concerned when he arrived that recruiting would be his Achilles heel

I’m a big Sherman believer because I like the guy a lot (whereas I despised Fran), but I agree the jury’s still out. This year will be critical. I like the kind of kids he’s recruiting and I like his offense, but we’ve absolutely got to improve on the penalties and special teams stupidity and we need to take a step forward on defense (at least be consistent on that side).

Yup.

Though those other schools I’ve mentioned actually put talent through to the NFL, which A&M has gotten progressively worse at through the Fran era. I feel like that’s the biggest indictment on his coaching tenure, that he could take such highly rated high school players and they would mainly get drafted on their athletic potential as opposed to their college resume.

How can A&M think of itself as on the level with UT and OU for high school players when you compare those 2 schools ability to develop their players for the NFL (Draft) is beyond me…

Fran's return-on-talent was abhorrent

Three five-star super-stud recruits while he was there. One gets kicked off the team, one is a pro-style QB with mobility that he ruins by turning into an option QB, and another gets underutilized his whole career before jetting for the NFL.

Less than a full season with Sherman and McGee’s draft stock soars. What Sherman could have done with Fran’s offensive talent sickens me.

Don’t get me started.

I won't say that Mack coasts to 10 win seasons

But it seems like he’s figured out that he’s such a great recruiter (and Texas is such a good school to recruit for) that he doesn’t have to be a great X’s and O’s guy, nor does he even have to hire great X’s and O’s guys. His talent level is so good that he’s going to win at least 10 games without getting the most out of his talent.

A coach who got the most out of his talent, combined with Mack’s recruiting ability, would probably lose about one game every three years.

I agree that Mack isn't a great X's and O's guy.

But Muschamp seems to be pretty good at his job and is not the first big-name D-Coordinator they’ve pursued and gone to great lengths to keep.

Still, recruiting is part of the game and it’s not like top 3 recruiting classes just fall in their laps. Sure, they’re always going to have an easier go of it than Tech or Baylor, and even have advantages against OU or A&M, but it’s taken time and talent to get to their perennial February success.

Admittedly I'm not a fan of Musch because I think he's a d-bag

But I think he’s overrated as a DC. He made his name working under two head coaches who were defensive geniuses themselves (Saban and Tuberville) and at schools with first-tier talent. He parlayed that into a job at a school with even better talent. He’s had good defenses at Texas, but if you’re a Texas DC, with that talent, if your defenses aren’t good you’re underachieving.

In that way, I think he’s a better version of Chizik. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Musch sucks as a DC but I don’t think he’s God’s gift to defense either. I don’t know that he gets the best out of his talent, but he doesn’t really have to.

I don’t understand the coach-in-waiting thing. I don’t think he’s got the maturity or management abilities to be boss at what is one of the top 3-5 jobs in the nation.

I can see that, but disagree.

I think he’s better than you’re letting on, though he does seem to be a bit overrated. It seems he has turned UT’s defense from one of those “great against bad offenses, crappy against good offenses” to one that’s legitimately one of the top defenses year-in, year-out. Also, he’s part of the reason they’re able to consistently recruit such highly-ranked defensive prospects.

While I don’t think he would have been a good hire for HC after his first year or two, I could see him learning enough from Mack over the past and next few years to master the necessary skills. Mainly, I think he’ll need to learn to reign in his emotions some. Fiery coaches are great and all, but HC’s have to deal with angry alumni without blowing up.

I agree with your assessment of his learning how to be a HC, right now he doesn't seem to have it

Admittedly, I look through a prism of negativity at his on-field results. However, the one truly great offense he faced this year smoked him and had him befuddled on Thanksgiving night..

Meh.

So he had one bad game against a team that surprised him, not a huge indictment. I think Jerrod surprised them at how well he could pass against the UT secondary and it subsequently wreaked havoc on what they were trying to do. It’s tough to tell for sure how good they were this past year though, with the Big12 being down, their weak non-conference schedule, and Alabama going so conservative in a big chunk of the NC game.

A&M should be interesting next year. Looks like they’ve got QB, RB, WR, and pass rusher figured out, which is more than you can say for many Aggie teams of the past decade. I’m curious to see how their offensive and defensive lines work out next year, but I think it’s the first time in a while that they will be a lot closer to UT and OU than Baylor in the Big 12 South.

JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Jan 29, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Texas didn't play a lot of explosive offenses so it's tough to get a good read

I hope you’re right about next year. That’s my thought too but I’m perennially optimistic. OL should be a lot better because of the talent level coming in. Joeckel enrolled mid-term and I’ll be surprised if he’s not a reliable starter by Big 12 play. Matthews and Ogbuehi are good enough to probably contribute too, not to mention that last year’s freshman (Barrera/Scales) should be an improvement on what we had to work with this year. That’s not a knock against the 2009 OL, but most of those guys were just beat-up journeymen who were giving all they had.

DL is a question mark. We’re still light on depth there, with some helpful commits in this year’s class. Hopefully the new DC and new DL coach will help in that regard, too.

Well, I hope not.

=)

I was impressed with Baylor’s class for cracking the top 50 as I had been hoping for the past 3-4 years now, but I was concerned about it being light at a place of huge need: D-line. They always seem to be able to get decent prospects at the speedy positions and had added the ability to get quality O-linemen under Guy Morris. In the past couple days, they’ve added/stolen a few D-linemen and have moved into much closer to 40 accord to Rivals. So maybe we can keep this BU-A&M thing competitive…though hopefully with better games every year instead of just blowing each other out.

Focus this season has been almost exclusively on defense.

The achilles heel of Baylor’s defense since the departure of Daryl Gardener has always been defensive tackles. We haven’t recruited a quality defensive tackle since I was in middle school. That’s why teams have absolutely abused us on the ground for years.

This year we have the top-ranked DB class in the conference, quite a few quality DE recruits and at least two or three DT recruits coming in for visits this weekend (in addition to two we already have) that could probably compete for playing time next year.

Offense won’t be the problem with a Briles-coached team, so we need to get better on defense.

Just as an aside.

In case anybody accuses me of doing so, I’m not saying that Baylor would have been world-beaters had Griffin not been injured or anything like that.

But 6-6 and a bowl game would have been perfectly reasonable to expect, particularly considering how close the Iowa State, Nebraska, and Tech games ended up being with our third string QB.

I agree with you on RB, which is a huge point of contention on Baylor's rivals board.

Some people say we don’t need to recruit a big-time RB because there are so many from Texas next year (possibly 4 5* RBs in Texas alone next season, along with a metric shitton of 4*s), but I’m worried about what we have behind Finley this coming season. Neither Gannaway nor Salubi inspired a lot of confidence in me.

Considering the talent they've been able to get at the position (based on recruiting rankings)

I can see where you’re coming from.

BTW, absolute travesty that Oregon managed to get the top two RBs from Texas this season, Seastrunk and Williams.

Yeah, Texas has gotten by without a stud RB for sure

As for the state as a whole, I’m looking at the Rivals 100 lists from the last five years right now and there have been some underwhelming RBs on that list.

Texas A&M has fared better than anyone recruiting Texas backs. Goodson was productive albeit slightly disappointing (I blame that on Fran), while Cyrus and C-Mike are a game-changing duo.

Other than that you’ve got Emmanuel Moody, Vondrell McGee, Desean Hales, Lennon Creer, and Jermie Calhoun. That’s an underwhelming set of NCAA backs. I guess the jury is still out on Calhoun because he’s just now a rising sophomore, but man, not a star-studded bunch.

Lennon Creer was good as a true fish, not sure what happened to him after that.

You can probably throw Sam McGuffie into that list along with the kid who transferred to SMU this past season from out of state.

How could we both forget about LaMichael James?

He’s a stud up at Oregon.

by Aquaman56 on Jan 29, 2010 3:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Creer actually left the Tennessee program last year, I think he saw the handwriting with Bryce Brown on his way in

I assume he transferred somewhere but I’m not sure where.

Didn’t think about McGuffie and James as neither of them made the Rivals 100. Texas actually took 2 RBs rated higher than James (Hales and Jeremy Hills). James’s offer list is fairly pedestrian, yet he ended up Pac 10 Offensive Freshman of the Year. Cyrus is the only RB ranked ahead of him who could remotely be called a college success thus far.

Just goes to show recruiting rankings are, oftentimes, a crampshoot.

Definitely

But I think the majority of times, the recruiting services are correct. People like to point out the big misses, like Jason Smith (OT from Baylor picked number 2 overall last year), but they are the vast minority of cases.

Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. by Aquaman56 on Jan 29, 2010 4:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, I agree

I don’t think it’s fair to say recruiting rankings are irrelevant, like some do. Specific kids get missed, good and bad, but as a whole, five stars have a pretty decent shot of success, four stars, a little less, and so on.

Recruiting and MLB prospects have a lot of similarities. Measurables are important, higher touted kids have a higher chance of success. But major busts happen and its impossible to predict how some kids will react at the next level of competition and with the other extracurriculars surrounding them. And diamonds in the rough get overlooked and become great stories down the road.

This whole stink with Galloway makes me respect Evan Grant that much more

As somebody stated above, if you can’t admit there’s a middle ground, then you’re overreacting. I personally would not have given Hicks as much wiggle room as Grant did, but the fact that he gives him any at all shows that he’s look at the situation objectively.

I almost feel like RG is fishing for praise from overreactionary fans because he “spoke truth to power” or some other bullsh. The truth is almost never that black and white, but it seems like there are no shades of gray in Galloway’s world.

I started Galloway's article

thinking I was going to enjoy his points about why Hicks was a bad owner. Then, I finished the article and remembered that Galloway never actually gives any evidence of why he feels the way he does. It felt rambling and poorly organized to me. Unfortunate because after the first couple of sentences I really thought it was going to be one of his better ones recently.

Interesting Tidbit

the 85 Rangers were the last time in franchise history that the team failed to win as many as 70 games (excluding strike years). They had done it 11 times prior to that year.

Also, this will be the 50th year of the franchise (dating back to the ’61 Senators)

The Yanks farm system

They haven’t really dealt that many pieces of it the past few years.

In the Granderson trade, they dealt Austin Jackson, who is well regared, and Ian Kennedy. But Kennedy they sold low on, refusing to deal him the previous couple of years (he was supposedly “untouchable” when the Rangers were talking to them about Teixeira).

They held on to Hughes and Chamberlain, and still have Jesus Montero.

Particularly over the last few years, Cashman has put an emphasis on trying to develop more guys from within.
