Early Cowboy Eagles thread

Well I hope this doesn't violate protocol or something. I'd like to throw some thoughts out there.

I can easily see Dallas winning this game. We are at home. That's so huge right there alone. Romo should just be deadly by this point, in his prime and tons of experience in Garrett's offense. McNabb OTOH, I still feel can be forced into mistakes.

If we lose this game, the defeatist attitude sported by Cowboys fans is going to come rushing back all week, though, despite all the good thing accomplished this year. The last two weeks will mean NOTHING.

TBH, if Garrett doesn't get better in the red zone, even though I feel like he's a good OC, I wont cry if he was to leave for a HC job after this year. We have got to start capitalizing more on opportunities. When was the last time this team scored 30 let alone 40 points? Unacceptable.

Now if JG leaves and we get some suckball, which of course is the risk you take, I will be crying lol.

Dallas is good because of Wade on one side of the ball and JG on the other, both are quality. But the fact is if one side's been slacking lately, it's JG's.

That's another reason I think we can beat the Eagles though, one of these days it seems like everything is going to go right, in that case we are going to put a LOT of points up. And the defense has been super stout.

As for playoffs, I want GB as our first round matchup about 10X more than any other. Ariz is the team I DONT want to face. If we beat Philly Sunday, having to beat them AGAIN wont be fun either. Ugh. So basically, dream scenario for me is beat Philly, win the division, be home against GB...(assuming no first round bye which is likely).

Texans, imma tell you lackluster Texans fans a lil secret, fire that d-coord you're going to be 11-5 plus easy next year. Meaning, I sure hope you dont fire him lulz. He's the Texans very own Brian Stewart.

Cowboys – 3?

yes

I’ve seen -2.5 in a couple places but -3 in most

by Panorama on Jan 3, 2010 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

Go Eagles!

Best scenario for the Cowboys is for them to win and Minn to lose. They would then be the 2nd seed. If they lose they go to either Minn or AZ.

So you want the Cowboys to lose

so they can go on the road and play Minn or AZ?
Because, if so that makes absolutely no sense.
Why would you ever want to pass on a home game.

You don't understand Garrett's game-planning, either.

If the Cowboys were to score or average 30 to 40 points a game this year, they wouldn’t have success in the playoffs.

As it stands, they are showing that they have improved their ideology to tailor their philosophies to playoff success.

This little thing they’ve got going right now, with the high-percentage short passing and a decent running game, with a deep threat in Miles Austin, yeah that’s a productive offense.

An offense like that keeps an offense like WHO DAT?! off of the field, entirely.

Then you let your defense win you the championship. That is the strength of the team this year and the only way they can win.

by inactive lsb user on Jan 3, 2010 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

Well I can't score the points

but I hope that the Cowboys could. I also understand your point that defense is more important during the playoffs.

by Triple Play on Jan 3, 2010 11:17 AM CST up reply actions

I think most people's beef with Garrett

is the fact we’ve been stuffed on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 all year, especially the past few weeks. When you get inside the five you have to score touchdowns. The line is too big and too physical to not be able to consistently convert on short yardage plays. He needs to do less with the misdirection or delay plays, sometimes I feel like Garrett trys to do too much. There is really no excuse for Jason Witten having one touchdown, considering how lousy they’ve been in the redzone lately.

by bmize16 on Jan 3, 2010 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

Davis and Gurode are the only ones that can be trusted to road grade and man block somebody.

So I think other teams just stick their Ted Washingtons in the A gap and force Garrett to get creative.

It sucks when you have to be creative on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1.

I would use 2-back in those situations, having Choice and Jones running patterns in either flat, with Witten on a curl in the center of the field.

"Nothing we do here has a point" - Czar Morris

by inactive lsb user on Jan 3, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

I think that is the point.

Creative does not necessarily have to be complex, but instead something that is not so predictable. Especially when the predictable plays are being stopped in a particular game (like they were in the last game)

They were talking about the cowboys v eagles rivalry and discussed the bounty bowls. Chris Carter then said of course there was a bounty and him and Jackson started laughing when he talked about getting extra money if you made a guy stumble and hobble after.

by octoberty on Jan 3, 2010 12:06 PM CST reply actions

Could be a nice pickup

Probably best suited for a Tashard Choice-type 3rd RB role that gets several touches a game, particularly given that Slaton isn’t really a workhorse back. They still need someone to split time with Slaton.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 3, 2010 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

Beats me

There’s some thought that 3 straight 8-8 seasons will doom him, and thus a loss today means he’s gone.

There’s also some thought that even if he wins today, this is two years in a row where the Texans have come into the season expecting to be a playoff contender, and instead started the season poorly and needed a strong late run just to get back to .500, so he could be gone regardless.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 3, 2010 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

I had the same thought.

It’s not that he’s bad, it’s just that he doesn’t seem to have the upside as most of the good starters in the NFL.

Marion Barber

KC. Todd Haley. Charles and him would complement each other really well. I could see it. 2nd round pick?

by octoberty on Jan 3, 2010 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

Which would then mean...

…the Cowboys would be in the market for an every down back, wouldn’t they?

I mean, you aren’t going to just roll with Felix Jones as your starter and Tashard Choice as your backup, I can’t imagine.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 3, 2010 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I guess it depends on your evaluation of Choice

If we trade Barber, we think Choice can be an every down back.

by octoberty on Jan 3, 2010 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

Choice is not an every down back.

But he does everything really well.

Marion Barber has averaged 14 carries a game this year...

One would assume Felix would be in line for a few more carries next year no matter what. So, if you trade Barber, you need to replace 10-12 carries a game.

by octoberty on Jan 3, 2010 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

He can block and catch, too, though.

Let’s not sell the guy short just because he got paid and made business decisions afterwards.

"Nothing we do here has a point" - Czar Morris

by inactive lsb user on Jan 3, 2010 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

Don't get me wrong, I like Barber

I just think if we can get something of value for him, it should be explored.

by octoberty on Jan 3, 2010 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

Texans might give up a #2 for him

He’d be a great match for Slaton. And Houston desperately needs a between the tackles/goal line back to share time with him.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 3, 2010 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

That would make some sense.

But you have to wonder if they couldn’t get 80-90% of Barber with that No. 2 draft pick…someone who would have higher upside in the future instead of a likely decline.

They could address their secondary with the first round pick though.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

Choice as the starter

Felix as the change of pace.
I think Choice could be an every down back in this league. He’s got the skillset and has never shown an aversion to carrying the load in college.

by Conjunction on Jan 3, 2010 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

He's listed at 5'10, but seems like 5'9 or 5'8.

Jones is 6’0 and Barber is 6’0, for reference.

You’re putting him on par with like Emmitt or LT, talent wise.

"Nothing we do here has a point" - Czar Morris

by inactive lsb user on Jan 3, 2010 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

No, I'm not

I never insinuated he’d be a game-changing player who consistently showed up as one of the best runners in the league. But Choice could be a more than servicable starter; certainly as good as Marion at this point, I think. Barber’s a mere shadow of what he used to be. He barely breaks any tackles anymore, and his breakaway speed is less than pedestrian.

by Conjunction on Jan 3, 2010 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

He lacks hunger

Those failed short down conversions may have been a good thing, though, as far as bringing that hunger back.

by octoberty on Jan 3, 2010 2:28 PM CST up reply actions

This kind of talk

always reminds me of Darren Hambrick talk. Dallas has been lucky as a franchise with its RB’s but when in the position is in doubt, we as fans love us some backup RB’s.

Also

Why would a bad team that is supposedly trying to rebuild give up a 2nd rounder for a RB with a lot of miles on him, who probably only has 2-3 good years left?

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 3, 2010 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I don’t think they would.

They would, however, take DeAngelo or Stewart, I think.

by brettgardner on Jan 3, 2010 12:37 PM CST up reply actions

Right, but...

…why does a bad team want to give up a high 2nd rounder to get a guy for 2 years?

I mean, I know the Raiders did that with Richard Seymour, but they’re the worst run franchise in sports.

by Adam J. Morris on Jan 3, 2010 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe not Clevelands

But 2-15 to 3-15 would be what I want for Barber, in terms of a draft pick.

by octoberty on Jan 3, 2010 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

Wow, Cowboys beat writer

Doug Free may be our starting LT next year.

No one is exactly sure how this uncapped year is going help teams dump bad contracts, but it could be the chance to lose Flozell’s

Roy Williams has a guaranteed 9 million dollar roster bonus, so he’s staying.. I was really hoping we could rid ourselves of that.

by octoberty on Jan 3, 2010 2:35 PM CST reply actions

Free

After a shaky start, he’s really looked very good. I wouldn’t mind rolling with him next year, though I still want to draft a few linemen. Even though he’ll probably be a guard, I’m looking forward to seeing if Brewster has anything.

by brettgardner on Jan 3, 2010 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

While Brewster is intriguing...

…this team needs quality OL depth behind Free something fierce…even moreso if they replace Flozell with him.

The thing about Flozell is that a few years ago, he was a legit top 5 LT, doing a really good job at protecting the QB’s blind side. But he’s getting slower each year and is now more in that above average range rather than elite. So the question is, do you stick with him realizing that he’s going to need help against elite pass rushers but is a known quantity for most games (1 penalty/game included) or do you roll the dice with Free? That seems like a really really tough call to make, especially because Flozell is going to be worse next year.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

But I think sitting Vick has more to do with the fact if McNabb went down early Kolb would give them a better chance to still win than Vick does and they must have had 45 man roster issues and had to keep an extra guy and not have all 3 QBs active

Why

Has Tennessee gone through “hell” to make it work with VY, when there’s tons of teams that have nothing but bad QB play for years?

People are retarded. So many things judged on blatant double standards.

If the Titans when through “hell” trying to make VY work, what the hell was “trying to make Kerry Collin work”??

That’s why these highly drafted QVB’s have such a low sucess rate. Not because they cant play, but because people hate them and they get such short leashes. Whereas if theyre just undrafted FA’s or something, they dont get hated or judged on the double standard, and they get 10X longer leashes.

"Every Indian feels that where the ball is, there he should be, and though they do not altogether abandon an instinctive disposition, the glory of Lacrosse to them is in the exciting chases after the ball. The Indian village game was not intellectual enough for the whites, and needed systematizing; but never let this improvement be carried to such extreme as to spoil its extemporaneous peculiarities of fielding, and the general free character, which distinguishes it above all other field games."

I was thinking about Welker the other day

Besides playcalling (which has slipped a lot with the loss of McDaniels) what makes NE dangerous is Brady and Moss. That’s pretty much it.

Welker can catch 5,000 balls imo, he’s still a slow white slot receiver. They’d probably be better off replacing him with somebody who can run.

by Sharky on Jan 3, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

Welker opens up the deep area for Moss

Teams start out giving up the short stuff but as the day goes on they start creeping up and that opens up Moss deep. Without Welker an opposing team is going to keep a safety over the top all day long

Well

You can force feed a receiver the ball and he’ll put up numbers. Does that mean he’s any good? Imo you have to look at his physical qualities often imo to determine that, at times.

The same thing came up in my mind with Roy Williams, I kinda expected Dallas to force him the ball and him put up big numbers at times this year (even though it never happened). Would that have made him a good receiver, or just a ex 1st round pick who had to get the ball because of his high price? I dont know. Physically he’s big, but not really fast.

The difference, though,

Is that Dirk is a Hall of Famer, and changed the conception of PF, while McNabb was a good-but-not-great QB who played a key part in a lot of playoff wins. He’s not a HOF.

Why isn't he a HOF?

"Nothing we do here has a point" - Czar Morris

by inactive lsb user on Jan 3, 2010 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

He's never been considered the best at his position

Or even close, really. I think it’s harder to quantify what makes a NFL HOF than it is a MLB, but even looking at the basic numbers, his completion % is meh, nothing special in TDs/YDs. I will say, though, that his INT numbers are very good.

I guess he’s had 3-4 years of really, really good play, and if his entire career were like that, he might have a chance, but he’s not an elite-level QB to me.

No. But that fact alone absolutely does not preclude him from the HOF.

As I said, his basic numbers just aren’t that impressive. Only two seasons of 25 or more TDs, not a lot of yardage, completion % is OK, low Y/A, and for whatever stock you put in it, he’s hovered around the “above-average” level in PFR’s rating system.

by brettgardner on Jan 3, 2010 5:45 PM CST up reply actions

Favre's '96 team

had the #1 defense, in terms of team defense.

I don’t think McNabb was ever afforded that, but I do recall some pretty stout units under Jim Johnson.

They also had a good line, I presume, because Edgar Bennett was the lead back, at 4.0 YPC, but they also carried Dorsey Levens and his 4.7 YPC on the roster.

Favre had a lot of help, but because of all the crap afterwards, probably receives more credit than he deserves for the ’96 squad.

Yes...

absolutely. As a Rangers fan, who I know no one outside of a very small community cares a half a shit about, it’s nice to be a fan of a team that has high expectations always.

It’s nice to see how the other side lives every now and again.

The bar/pool hall where I caught the game today

80% Pokes fans. Just awesome.

I have no idea why it is, but Northern Virginia/ Maryland has the biggest concentration of America’s team’s fans outside of DFW that I’ve ever seen.

Only thing better would have been a few Philly schlubs to give the gas-face to…

Being a Cowboys and Rangers fan is truly an interesting life.

These teams are from the same market, but one is irrelevant to the nation at large, seriously lacks passionate fans and has no history to speak of.

The other might arguably be the most successful team in the game since the modern league was formed, if not since they were first born, has a national following rivaled by few others in sports and appears on ESPN if a player sneezes.

Strangely, most of my life, the idea of the Rangers winning a World Series was something I couldn’t imagine ever happening, even in the late 90s, and the Cowboys winning another Super Bowl just seemed like destiny. That’s starting to change lately. . .

The only question remaining now...

is if the Jets or Texans secure the final spot in the AFC. The Ravens At. Patriots, Eagles At. Cowboys, and Packers At. Cardinals are all set.

The Bengals are almost in a position of picking whom they want. Play to win and get the Texans. Rest the starters and go with game plan B to lose to the Jets and get them again next week.

One downside to getting the #3 seed...

is there’s no way to avoid the Vikings in the second round with a win.

A Wild Card game versus the Eagles again, Divisional Round versus the Vikings, and then the Saints in the title game would be a tough road to the Super Bowl. However, if the Packers or Cardinals beat the Saints in the Divisional round, and the Cowboys can beat the Eagles and Vikings, having a home NFC title game would be pretty sweet.

Usually...

there’s a team like the Texans or Jets that sneaks into the playoffs in each league, but the NFC this year is stout. The Eagles went from the #2 seed to start the day to the #6 seed at the end of the day. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see any of the six teams from the NFC in the Super Bowl. There’s no real Cinderella.

Getting past the Eagles...

next week seems to be the biggest roadblock, to me. The toughest opponent after the Eagles in my eyes is the Packers and the Cowboys could only face them at home in the NFC Championship game.

If the Cowboys can get by the Eagles again, which will be no small feat, I think they could make a long run of it.

Strong finish for Texans too

I like how up there AJM says the Texans need to fire Kubiak. Wait, I thought drafting and talen evaluation decided winners in the NFL? Dont the Texans have that great GM structure in place?

LOL, AJM knows it’s coaching that determines winning. When you fire your HC you almost always get new OC’s/DC’s too. It a complete reroll of the dice, and that’s why coaching changes pay off so frequently and so fast in the NFL.

What the Texans need to do is give their DC the Ron Washington lifetime contract to be the DC forever. Then fire Kyle Shanahan and Gary Kubiak and replace them with minorities in the interest of affirmative action. That’s what I think would be best.

that 3 of the exact games played this week are going to be rematches next week to start the playoffs

Packers @ Cardinals
Jets @ Bengals

Baltimore @ New England

The Texans fucked it up. Ahahaha. Poor Texans.

Kubiak is gonna be back next season I guess. Yay.

Fuck, if the Texans drop Frank Bush and get somebody decent, they’re going to be so scary next season. We cant let that happen guys.

AJM knows I’m right, he knows really hard in his heart Bush has to go and that the talent has nothing to do with it.

Hopefully, the Texans will fire Kyle Shanahan and replace him with a minority, and keep Bush.

That obviously shouldn’t matter since it’s just the players, so if there’s no objections can we do that guys?

All the people crying about Wade not pulling Romo

Why is Belichick catching little flak for Welker actually getting injured in a meaningless game?

Why did Reid not pull his starters?

by Sharky on Jan 4, 2010 12:25 PM CST reply actions

Also, lines

According to Cowlishaws blog, well, I’ll just copy it

The only teams playing this week that didn’t meet Sunday are New England and Baltimore. Maybe for that reason (or maybe because people have just seen Joe Flacco throw too many passes this season), the Patriots are the heaviest favorite this weekend.

At four points!

Dallas is a 3 1/2-point favorite over a team it just beat by 24. Cincinnati is a 3-point favorite over a team it just lost to by 37. And Arizona is a 2 1/2-point favorite over a Green Bay team that just beat it on its home field by 26.

Cowboys only 3.5 over Eagles is odd, and a bit scary. I guess Vegas looks at things like that DeShaun Jackson miss, things could have been different. Still, it’s weird, we thoroughly dominated them. I’d expect the line to move the Cowboys direction.

Reid clearly held back a bit, I watched his postgame, they asked about Vick, he said they had a couple plays for Vick but didn’t use them as they “pulled back a little towards the end”.

Nobody who didn’t have much to play for showed their schemes Sunday. That’s why they lost.

But Vick was the 3rd QB yesterday, so they weren’t going to use him unless it was an emergency.

See

if I were the Eagles, I don’t know why you held back. If they would have won yesterday, they could have gotten a bye and the number 2 seed. I don’t really believe that they held back. That is the bullshit Reid will be telling everyone but I don’t believe it.

I think

the Eagles blitzed more in the 2nd half and McNabb and Jackson (who looked like he was injured) were in the whole game.

The one thing I noticed is that we didn’t see McCoy so they might have been trying to preserve/hide him for next week.

Ummm

What I’m referring to is Reid talking about holding back only late in the game when it was pretty obvious the game was out of reach. That’s all.

He was basically saying yeah, we had a couple plays for Vick, but once the game got out of reach, we weren’t going to show them.

by Sharky on Jan 5, 2010 5:59 AM CST up reply actions

Of course they weren't going to show those Vick plays

because he was the 3rd string QB. If Vick plays, then the other 2 QB’s are ineligible for the remainder of the game.
