EPL 01/31 - Arsenal vs. United/January Transfer Deadline

Huge game tomorrow with massive title implications. Whoever loses will be 4-5 points behind Chelsea with an extra game played. Ferdinand suspended for United, Eduardo/Diaby out for Arsenal. Vermaelen goes from a possible broken leg to probably playing this game. Prediction: 2-1 Arsenal. Oh, and the January transfer window closes tomorrow. Usually something materializes out of the blue, so we'll see what happens. Rec this up.

Nani

I know that wound up as an own goal, but I was shocked to see Man U’s answer to Ryan Babel doing something positive…

Nani's played extremely well the last 3 games. There's a reason why he has basically displaced Valencia now.

The difference between Nani and Babel is that, when Nani has a good run of games, SAF isn’t afraid to keep playing him even though the other guy hasn’t done anything to warrant a benching.

Oh, and Nani’s shown significantly more promise than Babel.

by LiamP on Jan 31, 2010 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

Babel

Hasn’t had a run of games to justify keeping him in the lineup since his first season.

If he’d spend half as much time working on his game as his rap career or his Twitter account, he might make Rafa rethink sitting his ass on the bench every week.

Didn't think you played that poorly.

Almunia was godawful and so was Denilson (see his marking on the Rooney goal), but apart from that none of your guys were that bad.

Unless Bendtner wasn’t fit, he should’ve been in there from the start. Arshavin out on the left against the Rafael/Brown/Nani side of the defense would’ve been a frightening prospect for United, and Bendtner at least would’ve given you some sort of target for crosses.

by LiamP on Jan 31, 2010 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

I was hoping that last goal would go in

after that insane Almunia pass to Nani. Hopefully Wenger finally realizes what a big cluserfuck Almunia is and gets a new keeper this summer. With you on Bendtner, his length would’ve helped early.

Wenger said he has 30mil to play with so we’ll see if anything comes of that.

We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.

by sprite on Jan 31, 2010 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

Tell you what, if he does actually have 30mm to play with, he'd be best served blowing most of it on Dzeko in the summer.

He’s skilled, extremely good in the air, links up well and allows you to move RVP to the right where he can cut in…it would be a very Barcelonaish system.

But it’s Arsene, so it’s not very likely.

by LiamP on Jan 31, 2010 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmm.

That’s a really interesting thought. Running a 4-3-3 with Cesc as the centerpiece and Arshavin, Dzeko and RVP up front with all those young, quick guys as backups would be like bringing a mini-Barca to the EPL. They would still need better play from the keeper spot though…

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Feb 1, 2010 11:10 AM CST up reply actions

Yuck

I just hope they can hang on for that third spot and that not really challenging for any trophies doesn’t sway Cesc to go in the summer. Almunia has to go. Oh and Rooney is so awesome.

by Brett Perryman on Jan 31, 2010 2:07 PM CST reply actions

Rooney

The scary thing is that he’d be even better if they bought a proper striker for him to play off of.

by LiamP on Jan 31, 2010 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, but...

…as long as you’re dreaming, it can’t just be a big, tall oaf. Sure that could fit into the ManU style that’s more physical than a lot of the Euro teams, but Rooney brings such good pace that it seems like someone like Zlatan would be ideal.

Barry

Word has it he’s playing injured – as in, summer surgery injured. Groin problem I believe. It would explain his lack of explosion and range – see the Fellaini dissection for reference. So, if we do bring on Gaga it would allow Barry to rest his problem more and perhaps play better when he does make an appearance. Mariga would’ve allowed Barry rest, too – that’s why I was bummed about him not coming.

Johnson’s a left winger – which might be a nod toward how ineffective we are going up the left side any time Bellamy is rested. Lord knows Barry couldn’t get behind anybody up the left.

In praise of Adebayour ...

Being fair to the guy, he played very solid Sunday vs Portsmouth. His first touch was excellent, his concentration 100%. He ran sideline to sideline with purpose. Even after he scored he just grabbed the ball and jogged back to the center circle with a happy smile on his face. His usual face-pulling and gesticulating was nearly non-existent – saw him whine briefly to the ref just once. If he brought that attitude, concentration and consistent output of energy to every game I’d take it in a heart beat.

Don’t know if he’s REALLY turned a corner personalitly-wise after the shooting incident, but I’ll give the guy credit for looking like a new man in his first game back. We’ll see – it would be huge if his purpose matched his potential. Fingers crossed – but not really that tight considering his past. Something to watch for at least.

At the deadline

There’s word on some of the Liverpool forums that they reached a last-minute loan deal (with an option to buy) with Olympiakos for Vasilis Torosidis.

That sucks. Not because he’s a bad player, but because we’ve all been calling Kyrgiakos “The Greek,” and now that there’s two of them, we’re actually gonna have to learn how to pronounce his name.

Shapes up to be a fun weekend for watching EPL

Early game Sat – Liverpool hosts Landycakes – Big games in the ‘4th place race’ tier of the table today. City would love for Everton to win or draw here.

9:00 games – City @ Hull might be the best matchup – the rest are pretty bleh. If ManU lost to Portsmouth and Arsenal won it would liven up the top 3 race a tad. Doubtful tho’ – a boy can dream, can’t he?

11:30 – Tottenham vs Villa – rooting for a draw. Big game for those two teams. Why isn’t Lennon playing? He puts Tot over the top when he plays. Dude scares the daylights outta me. BTW, if you click on the Tottenham roster at the official EPL website you get a list of Arsenal players. Interesting. heh

Sunday – Arsenal @ Chelsea – Chelsea-in-turmoil could be ripe for the picking here if Arse can bring lotsa heart.

A draw wouldn't be the end of the world for you.

Chelsea still have to go to Anfield, WHL, Old Trafford, and Goodison. They also host City and Villa, who’ll be battling for 4th still. Their schedule isn’t easy.

United have to go to Villa Park, Goodison, City Stadium and Sunderland. They host Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs.

Arsenal’s most difficult remaining road games are @ WHL and Birmingham. They host Liverpool and City. They have by far the easiest schedule left of the 3…a draw on Sunday would be acceptable.

Yeah – Johnson looks fine – great first touch, quick decisive vision, weights a good ball, excellent crosser and set-piece taker. Vieira looked great for a while but soon realized he couldn’t hover behind the strikers due to NIGEL DE JONG’S UTTER OFFENSIVE INCOMPETENCE. I’ve had it with that guy. De Jong.

To be fair, you didn’t buy him for his offensive capabilities. It’s like Liverpool and Mascherano…he’s awful at distribution and he has little to no attacking ability, but in terms of purely defensive mids he’s one of the best.

I think Barry’s the bigger problem in your midfield. He’s fine in a team like Villa, but for a club like City with bigger aspirations, he doesn’t cut it. Especially not alongside someone like De Jong. City desperately need someone more creative there.

But it does seem like he’s one of those players who’s talented enough to win the support of the manager and coaching staff, but not quite talented enough for to take the team to the next level. Anyways, the always dangerous Cesc was a concern, but as the match went on Chelsea’s defence seemed more and more stout. They did have a couple of blips, but it sure is nice to see Carvalho back there in good form. It’s weird to think that most (Chelsea fans) thought he was done and on his way to Inter last year.

pre-Bolton Mancini presser

Several interesting things I took from it -

— He considers his A-team defensive four to be … Richards-RB, Kolo, Kompany, Bridge-LB. He likes Zab available to play CDM to rest NDJ and Barry. Boyota should be depth due to his inexperience and he danced like Fred Astaire around Joleon Lescott questions. He obviously likes what he’s seen from Kompany and is dubious of Lescott’s abilities – but he can’t say it in so many words. Heh – Lescott better play his socks off when he gets minutes. I think he needs to change Mancini’s impression of him, probably garnered thru film study. Goals-allowed stats do Joleon no favors.

— The point I brought up at Hughes’ firing was targeted by Mancini, too. Hull, Bolton, Stoke – these teams put out 200% effort against City and challenge every ball like mad. Mancini said City can’t beat these guys unless they match the effort, aggression and physicality these lesser teams put out – something Hughes never addressed successfully.

— He definitely acknowledges the weakness in NDJ and Barry, but shrugs that there’s been nothing he can do about it because he’s had only one semi-injured midfield replacement available in Ireland, not to mention being forced to use Zab at RB all the time. He considers NDJ and Barry to be overworked and thus inconsistent in their performances. You can tell he really hopes Vieira is now a healthy option every game so he can keep a midfield roto going.

— Definitely think Mancini favors tall players who can hold up to physical play and air battles better than fragile, slight guys like Ireland and SWP. Ireland better get his act together quick – he’s talented for sure but he’s gonna wind up in Mancini’s doghouse if he doesn’t start putting some people on their azz. Vieira and Johnson are gonna get mucho play if they stay healthy. SWP seems like the odd man out due to his size and weak ankle.

I’ve always been impressed with Kompany. In the 2nd leg against United, he was so good he basically carried Boyata. I think you’ll see Lescott step it up, if only because the WC is coming up and he’s scrapping for a spot.

Ireland is far too lightweight to play in a 2 man mid with DeJong or Barry. He’s a good player at the top of a midfield 3 though.

That is quite a blow

obviously for Chelsea, but especially for England if he can’t get healthy and in form by June. I know some think he’s overrated, but you can do things with him that you can’t with any of their other left backs.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 11, 2010 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

The thinking is that he'll be ready for WC matches...

…and WC training probably as well. Now, end of season EPL/CL matches are still up for grabs.

Bah…no ACole…no Essien…at least we don’t play one of the Spanish teams in the next round of CL.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

DAMNIT!!!

We’re getting killed by freaking Saha! 2 goals now, should have been 3 on a PK right before half. On a day where Nani gets sent off, ManU is probably going to gain a point on Chelsea.

Wish people wouldn't underestimate Saha so much.

He’s the soccer equivalent of Chris Carpenter.

Yup

He’s very underrated. Yeah, he’ll make some horrible decisions, but overall, he’s a very solid player

and Arsenal wins

Pretty boring match

We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.

Yeah

I whined over the weekend results, but today’s scoreboard is very nice for City.

Today

was probably the best day of the year for Arsenal, yesterday’s Man City win notwithstanding. They’re still barely in the area code of the top two, but they had to have a day where they quickly picked up multiple points on both to have any chance. I guess they could be disappointed that Aston Villa couldn’t take advantage of an hour of a man advantage, but Aston Villa are still a factor for that fourth spot as well, so that’s not a complete loss. And beating Liverpool and having Spurs lose puts them in much stronger position to keep the third spot.

2/21 Liverpool-City, I’m circling my calendar for that one.

Here's a question

Why do people refer to Wolverhampton Wanderers as Wolves?

by Brett Perryman on Feb 10, 2010 4:37 PM CST reply actions

Because of the Wolve in Wolverhampton

We need to not always make hard work out of sex- Rick Carlisle.

by sprite on Feb 10, 2010 4:40 PM CST up reply actions

I mean yeah

but isn’t that pretty stupid? I don’t think that the city was even named Wolverhampton because of wolves, but some king’s name. Even with West Ham, I can see someone from that part of town being called a Hammer. It would be pretty dumb to colloquially call some team from San Antonio the Ants or Manhattan the Hats, especially if they had a different nickname wouldn’t it? The Angels do it (which, when you think about it is stupid enough), but at least it’s their official nickname.

Ran across this video link ...

Leicester City 3 v 3 Arsenal - 1997 Premier League Classic Game

Bergkamp’s hattrick placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd as league goals of the month, supposedly.
The 2nd goal, while a bit zany, ain’t all that great, but the 3rd one is fantastic. Note how young Heskey and Vieira are here.

Bergkamp was magic.

One of the few players on those Arsenal sides that I actually liked. The turn and finish against Newcastle (search YouTube for “Bergkamp turn”) is still one of the 3 best goals I’ve ever seen.

The Guardian podcast guys talked today about Portsmouth's woes

Should Portsmouth collapse and suddenly withdraw from the league, they mused, the points earned by teams beating them would be subtracted from their totals. This would be excellent news for Liverpool who are the only top team to lose to them. City, for instance would lose 6 points from their total and plummet down the table. Liverpool would not lose one single point. Imagine how much Liverpool’s fortunes could change by beating City on the 21st and seeing Portsmouth fold during the same week.

The podcast also talked about why Southampton fans call Portsmouth fans skates.

I think Rangers fans should start referring to Angels fans as skates seeing how LA is a coastal city and all. heh

Any truth to the...

..“Vidic for sale, likely going to Real Madrid over the summer” rumors? Seems surprising…

by GhettoBear04 on Feb 13, 2010 1:06 PM CST reply actions

Meh, who knows.

The media are basing this off four things: 1. His wife hates England. 2. SAF made a fairly innocuous comment a few weeks ago regarding the confusing nature of Vidic’s injury. 3. He hasn’t played much recently. 4. United are poor and need to sell everyone.

His agent has said repeatedly that he’s happy at United and wants to stay, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he was sold. Evans has been pretty good the last couple of years and Smalling will arrive this summer. The 20mm price is fucking ludicrous though, that’s about how much Lescott went for and Vidic is infinitely better than Lescott.

by LiamP on Feb 13, 2010 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

Ha, no shit.

about Vidic being better than Lescott. I’m always rooting against your team, but I hope you pull every freaking penny out of them you can if it does go through. Vidic, when healthy, is a great player.
