TCU prediction tonight
TCU 34 Boise State 20
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
I predict
a cute little game with THE lowest television ratings in the history of the Fiesta Bowl.

We take eighteen ounces of sizzling ground beef, and soak it in rich, creamery butter, then we top it off with bacon, ham, and a fried egg.
We call it the Good Morning Burger.
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

What were the ratings
when Tech played in a BCS game?

The 2008 Texas / Texas Tech
game was the highest rated regular season game in the decade.
The game with Texas was moved up this year and next year because ABC thought it was THE best game to kick of their regular season schedule.
Thanks for asking about television ratings!

You are too dense
to realize I was making fun of the fact that Tech has never been in a BCS game mostly because, in your words, they sh*t the bed against OU last year.

What the Texas/Texas Tech television ratings prove
is that ABC has no qualms and in fact loves to put Texas Tech on in prime time.

I didn't ask you what they proved
Tech has never been in a BCS game, and since they are a second rate program with a gimmick offense, it will be a long time before they get into one.

by Arlington Stadium Legend on Jan 4, 2010 10:45 AM CST up reply actions
If you knew Tech has never been to a BCS game
why did you ask the question about television ratings?
Texas Tech is usually one of the top 15-25 teams in the country while playing in one of the best conferences. There’s nothing second rate about that.

the difference between TCU and Tech
is that Tech shitting the bed last year kept them out of the National Championship Game. If TCU shit the bed against Utah, they would be in the Fort Worth Bowl and since they won, they get rewarded for beating every “no one” on their schedule by getting to continue playing a “no one”.
So, Congrats.
No
The UT game was moved up because Mack Brown and the Big XII agreed to let them move it. Mack correctly assumed that had he lost to TTU first, then beat OU, UT would have had a higher final BCS ranking than OU.
That game was moved solely for television
and Texas Tech (who had an equal say in the game being moved) was not going to do Texas any favors.

My cable system has
just about everything on it. 10 HBOs or so plus Cinemax as well.
I have the MLB Network, NFL Network, Versus and the NHL network as well.
I have the YES network, CBS College, tennis and golf channels, spanish channels, great educational and history channels.
There’s simply waaaaaay too many options on my cable system but I don’t have the (LOL!) “Mountain Network.”
I don’t know how I got thru that one weekend without seeing Wyoming take on Colorado State!

TV ratings prove
that Last year when Tech was having an abnormally good year for them and UT is still a juggernaut in national ratings that it was a huge game.
Now that Tech is most likely back to being in the pack with Baylor its probably going to be a regional game now.
What do voluntary mean?
And
watching Iowa St. play Baylor is appointment TV. Bringing up the bottom feeder teams in any conference is laughable…
"calmer than you are dude" Walter (Big Lebowski)
by Arlington Stadium Legend on Jan 4, 2010 11:16 AM CST up reply actions
But...
Iowa State and Baylor play in a conference with Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Okie State, Nebraska and Texas A&M.
The best game the Mountain West had to offer this year was on the CBS College Network.
ABC loves the Texas / Texas Tech ratings so much they’ve had the schools change the schedule so they could put the game up early in the season.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"

That was a huge game in 2008.
In 2009 it was a pretty much irrelevant game. In 2010 its likely to be an even less important game.
I’d bet that UT asked to have it moved because if Tech, with Leach, ever had another year like 2008 it gives them a much better chance to come back and win the conference.
ABC if they want to move it for ratings its because they want UT having an important game early for them to show, and Tech just happened to the best option for a game that looked like it would have some import.
What do voluntary mean?
My impression is that the TT night games have been popular with UT fans for a long time
but that may have been because of where it came in the schedule.
Upon further review, TCU is much better off playing Boise State
instead of some behemoth like Florida.

Why?
I don’t understand. Except for Hawaii Non BCS schools have done very well in BCS games. With this game we will never know how good these teams actually are compared to a larger school.
TCU's best win
came against a middle-tier Clemson team (that also lost to Maryland!) in a game where they were trailing in the 4th quarter.
They make for a nice story but they’re simply good enough to put up 11 wins in a conference that requires them to play several quality opponents.

Jon Garland is a proven MLB mid rotation pitcher
Colby Lewis flamed out in the MLB and then proceeded to have a couple of good years in Japan, which IIRC is considered closer in difficulty to AA or AAA then MLB.
Just don’t see that there is much comp to be made there. One is likely a midrotation pitcher while the other is a NRI somewhere.

Lewis didn't really flame out
He had an injury similar to Eric Hurley’s IIRC.
What a drag it is being broke.
MIght be. Don't remember.
He didn’t have good results in the MLB, mostly because he walked everyone. If he has control that he seems to show in the Japan leagues he might become Garland.
I’m really thinking the idea of a split deal for him is nice, anything more than that would have to be a total pass for me.

Also, Eric Hurley, recovering from Tommy John surgery, will be behind other pitchers, “by design,” according to Daniels. Daniels said that although Hurley is eager to get started, the club is targeting the May 1 vicinity for him to start his season. That most assuredly knocks him out of the competition for a spot in the opening day rotation. And it probably means he wouldn’t be a factor for the major league team before June 1.

Starting on May 1
and being ready for June 1 for the MLB. That seems rather unlikely. Anyone else think that Hurley is likely down in the minors most if not all of the season, unless we can’t option him for some reason?
What do voluntary mean?
I think 3 months, 1/2 season minimum
He needs to get used to pitching again, even moreso if any tweaks to his pitching motion are/were advised.

He has all three options left
I think the earliest hes a legit candidate to help the ML club is the ASB. Most likely he stays in the minors until September.
This does help open up a spot in OKC for a NRI with a May 1 opt out date, ie Colby Lewis.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I wouldn't be surprised by it
The rotation has a starting 5 that looks to be pretty good and then you have a few others behind them that will get the first shot before Hurley. The only way Hurley gets a shot to start is if there are a lot of injuries or he forces the issue, likely in the second half at the earliest.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Rangers GM Jon Daniels said Jarrod Saltalamacchia will come to Texas next week to have his surgically-repaired right shoulder re-examined. If there is no new trouble and no soreness, he will be cleared to start a throwing program immediately. It is worth noting that when Saltalamacchia felt soreness in his shoulder in the Dominican Republic a month ago, the club felt that even with the month off, he could be ready for opening day with no further setbacks.

I'd put the M's in there too

Boston or Oakland would seem like a no-brainer
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I think Boston
Both with Lowell’s thumb and the possibility of that opening up a trade for Adrian Gonzales. Trade Elsbury for Adrian and move Youk to L and Cameron to center.

It's a testament to the badassedness of LSBers
that every morning thread with no news still generates over a couple hundred comments.
Go Rangers, Go Cowboys, Go LSB.
Either that or massive boredom and Josey baiting.
What do voluntary mean?
All you gotta do is throw out some chum
to insecure fans from teams of the MWC and they’ll come out of the woodwork.
I can’t figure out Texas/Bama. Colt sucked v. Tech, Oklahoma and Nebraska and they have no running game.
If Bama can keep Shipley under control, I’m thinking there’s a chance they dominate.

Not really.
I’m trying to figure out a reason to bet on Texas (getting 4.5 points) and logic tells me that right now that Bama is clearly the better team.
Now, if the Longhorns get to bring in some Big 12 officials, everything changes.

I'm not an MWC fan but I think your arguments above are about
as well reasoned as your normal arguments. Of course you will take that as a compliment.
What do voluntary mean?
You do realize that BYU, the supposed 2nd best team in the MWC
got their ass worked (wasn’t it 49-20?) in Provo by a mediocre Florida State team?
That game alone defines the quality of football played in the MWC.

Missouri got worked over by a mediocre Navy team.
That game alone defines the quality of football played in the Big XII.
And I’m a Missouri fan.
What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?
Mizzou was beaten by Baylor.
You’re talking about the 6th-7th best team in the Big 12.
BYU was the second best team in the MWC and got their asses handed to them by a mediocre ACC team at home.

Do you mean
the same BYU team that beat OU on a neutral field to start the season???

yeah
and they just destroyed the 3rd best team in the Pac-10. So what?
Texas Tech and Oklahoma State both lost to Houston…the same team that lost to UTEP, Central Florida, and then got publicly sodomized by the 4th place Mountain West team in their bowl game.

I'm recing that

to take that game as the definition would be as unfair as to take the Utah-Alabama game
at least be even-handed with your nonsense, josey
I was talking about your idea that Tech is the reason that
the Tech/UT game had huge ratings in 2008. It was a regular season two top school game, that had one of the 2 or 3 biggest draw teams in NCAA football as one of the two competitors. Tech isn’t a ratings team, unless they are having an abnormal year for them. UT is a ratings team. OU is a ratings team.
That’s your bad logic there.
Also picking one game to define a season isn’t a good idea. BYU had several good wins and that one really bad loss. OU, Utah and Oregon State are all solid teams.Yes the FSU loss was bad. Claiming that a top 15 team is a weak opponent isn’t very reasonable.
What do voluntary mean?
I never said Tech was THE reason the 2008 game had such high ratings

To be fair, half of them are about bacon or chorizos
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Is anyone else disturbed that Jack-In-The-Box
only has two salads on the menu? They used to have four choices.
I alternate those two salads every day.
Sonic has a pretty good salad
Santa Fe with grilled chicken and honey mustard.

that sounds pretty good Big Dog

LOL yeh no kidding I was trying to be kind..you're right..
who knows what they put in that pre-fab so called chicken. Hey Greg I was gonna ask you …how was New Years in NYC?

Awesome, man.
The girlfriend and I had a blast. We’d never been before, and I guess I was just taken aback by how enormous the city is. We ran around and did a ton — lots in Midtown, an entire day in Lower Manhattan, spent New Years in Greenwich Village, went to Central Park — and I still feel like I say maybe 20-percent of the city.
It was so much fun, though. I haven’t been on a really touristy vacation in a while. You’re an NYC guy, right? What’d you do for New Years?
What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?
oh wow you got to see a LOT..
Good for you! Yeh New York is the best,, I was there when you were but stayed away from the whole Times Square mishmash and just went to a small gathering on the upper west side. That bar that you went to in the village is known for being a FUN place and having some hottie bartenders from what I’ve heard. Yep I lived most of my adult life in Manhattan mostly in the west village and I try and go back as often as I can.

well I liked the sonic chicken salad concept with the honey mustard..
cuz honey mustard is low in fat usually. You might as well have a double cheeseburger with fries if you’re gonna eat that Black Eyed Pea cobb salad. That’s an astronomical amount of fat with the bleu cheese, bacon, AND high fat dressing.
