Rangers sign Khalil Greene

Khalil Greene, starting shortstop on the Reggie Cleveland All Star Team, has been signed to a one year, $750,000 deal by the Rangers to, presumably, be the team's utility infielder this year.

He gives the team a solid defender who can back up Elvis Andrus at shortstop, an issue that has been hanging out there all offseason.

I'll say it before Andy Seiler does

Greene isn’t exactly a “solid defender”.

But he’s probably not gonna kill you as your UTL guy either.

He's been pretty solid career wise. Kinda like Marlon Byrd solid.

So, a tiny bit below average

is what, then? If you’re talking about a tiny bit below average at a position where defense is at a premium, that’s not bad at all.

Eh

looking at the data from year to year, it’s pretty obvious he’s solid, minus last season when he decided to see spots whenever anything too exciting happened.

Which would worry me if we where signing him to be a regular player, but we ain’t.

As a UTL guy I don’t think it’ll matter.

Everything up to 2007 was fine

The question is whether anything fundamentally changed in 2008, which nobody knows for sure. Given the UZR system, any averagy defender has a chance of being given a really bad UZR score in a given year (example: Coco Crisp). His feats last year didn’t help either. So best case is that he is average, and worse case is that 2008 is now norm. I’d go somewhere in between and call him somewhat below-average.

So...

How will the West shake out this year as of right now?

1. Texas/Seattle
2. Seattle/Texas
3. Halos of Jersey by way of Cali
4. Oakland

I think it comes down to head to head match ups between Texas and Seattle.

that only leaves one spot left to fill on the bench. Most lilke an OF, but, Vlad can serve as the 5th OF. That leaves some flexibility for that last spot.

my feelings exactly

Greene barely makes over league minimum and besides the utility job, he can provide some pop as a possible pinch hitter late in the game. Great day for the Rangers and the Dallas area in general.

by MagicMike23 on Jan 10, 2010 1:08 AM CST reply actions

so with these two moves our lineup looks like this

LF – Hamilton
CF – Borbon
RF – Cruz
1B – Davis
2B – Kinsler
SS – Andrus
3B – Young
C – Salty
DH – Vlad

bench
C – TT
UIF – Greene
OF – Murphy

I don’t think we have another necessary position to fill on the roster unless there is a need to sign a catcher. There is the possibility of signing Lewis to bolster our pitching depth which would be fine. We added 3 possible bullpen pieces in Oliver (guaranteed), Ray, and Snyder. Trade away Millwood — add Harden to the rotation.

With all the talk of difficult finances, this offseason has been incredible. I remember the frustration of every story being the fact that we had ZERO cash to spend. When the Rangers start to move, it happens fast.

Well done, JD. Let’s hope this is the winning formula.

Pretty good signing

Greene is a great fastball hitter (horrible at offspeed stuff though, if I remember correctly) and a decent defensive option. I certainly won’t mind having him at SS and 3b for 20-25 games a year.

I’m definitely more a fan of Khalil Greene the backup as opposed to Khalil Greene the starter. I never liked him much while in San Diego – I got kind of the same vibe as we did Hank the last few years. He should be a better hitter than he has been lately, though we know how that can go.

I’m sure gonna miss watching Omar play once a week for the Rangers. He was a joy to watch. Especially those few occasions when he was paired up with Elvis on a Double Play.

But if Omar wants to go play for his bat-shit crazy fellow countryman, then what can you do.

As for Khalil, I was hoping for a better glove for the utility role. I’d prefer an airtight defensive option over an iffy bat that might give you a bit of pop. But maybe that’s just me
